Sherry, Gavin & Garett Coleman -- Found Deceased 5/5/09 Empty Sherry, Gavin & Garett Coleman -- Found Deceased 5/5/09

Post by Guest Fri Mar 05, 2010 5:29 pm

I was surprised that there wasn't a topic about this already - but I did search for it... so i'll do a quick recap of the events...

Chris Coleman stands accused of murdering his beautiful wife, Sherry (31), and 2 adorable sons, Gavin(9) and Garett(11).

The crime scene was horribly decorated with spray paint - obscenities worded to appear that Coleman was being stalked by some crazy religious lunatic because of Coleman's profession as a security guard for Joyce Meyer Ministries. One of the boys lay strangled in his bed, even as his father spray painted over his dead body as he lied there tucked in. Coleman staged an intrusion, while he left early that morning before 6:00 to set up his alibi - he was working out... ahem...
Later it was discovered that Sherry and her boys had been murdered around 3:00 am anyway - so Coleman didn't have an alibi for that time, he was home...

Coleman was carrying on an adulterous relationship (frowned upon by his employer, but they weren't aware of it at the time...) and had the relationship been discovered it would have resulted in his immediate termination. SO... he set up a separate email account and began emailing threats to himself - setting up the "incident" at the house, and also making it very easy for the prosecution to prove premeditation. But, I digress - let's go back to the "mistress" - she just so happens to be a former school mate of Sherry's - and Coleman romanced Tara Lintz utilizing his employers' private jets, taking her on vacations to Hawaii and just living it up... To Lintz's credit, she has cooperated fully with LE - and IMO will be a prize state witness.

After a long dry period of NO news in this case - we finally heard from the media today. There were some new revelations:

* Sheri Coleman, who attended high school with Lintz, went to televangelist Joyce Meyer and told Meyer that her husband wanted a divorce. Meyer then informed Christopher Coleman, then the head of security for Joyce Meyer Ministries, that he could no longer work there as he planned a divorce.

* Sheri Coleman said her husband "beat her up" several months before the murders.

* That Christopher Coleman, when left alone briefly during interrogation at Columbia police headquarters after the bodies were discovered May 5, retrieved an officer's interview notes from a chair and read them.

* A forensic scientist, Richard Johnson, has issued a report concerning vulgar and threatening spray-painted messages in the house on Robert Drive, stating they were "probably" written by Christopher Coleman.

* The previous searching of the house, where photographs and measurements were taken, was done to give details for a model reconstruction of the house for use by the prosecution during trial.

Hopefully we're nearing a trial...

Coleman and his girlfriend talked about reversing vasectomy, having kids
Lintz was looking for rings, registering at wedding sites

BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK
Thursday, Mar. 04, 2010

WATERLOO -- Christopher Coleman and his girlfriend talked about getting his vasectomy reversed or drawing sperm from his body so they could have children, according to a copy of a police search warrant filed Wednesday.

The revelation was contained in an updated police narrative of the triple murder case that was filed with search warrants that allowed Illinois State Police and FBI experts to again search the premises of the house on Robert Drive in Columbia, where Coleman's wife and two sons were found dead in May.

Coleman, 32, is in the Monroe County Jail without bail charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the strangulation deaths of his wife, Sheri Coleman, 31, and sons, Garett, 11, and Gavin, 9.
Chris Coleman
Chris Coleman - BND

The narrative stated that the Florida girlfriend, Tara Lintz, had been looking for "rings and registering at wedding registration Web sites." It also stated that Lintz used an online service to look for a home in the St. Louis area for sale for her and Christopher Coleman.

"They were constantly contacting each other by phone, text or instant messages," the search warrant document stated. "They would often send photos and videos of a graphic and sexually explicit nature back and forth to each other."

The updated police narrative also listed other previously unreported developments in the case including:

Christopher Coleman's attorney, John O'Gara of Belleville, filed a motion Monday in Monroe County Circuit Court seeking a change of venue for his client because of widespread local and national publicity about the case.

The search warrant application also stated that when questioned by Columbia police detectives after the deaths, Coleman talked about having three security cameras at the house on Robert Drive, including one trained on the interior basement area that should have but did not film an intruder. Police responding to the murder scene found a basement window open.

"At first, Christopher denied having an affair with Tara Lintz," the search warrant stated. "After being told that investigators were talking to Lintz he admitted to the affair, but minimized their involvement."

The narrative also included summaries of what expert witnesses hired by the Columbia Police Department and the prosecution said they needed to reconstruct the murder scene. This included a reference to Mark E. Safarik, a former FBI profiler for 23 years, who requested more exact measurements of the house including the interior.

Ron Locke and Tom Gambo, who work as forensic scientists for the Illinois State Police, wanted a basement window seized that was found open and presumed initially to be the killer's entry point. The application stated they want to determine if the window was operating properly.

Mark Rogers, a professor at Purdue University in Indiana who specializes in computer technology and forensic computer examinations, wanted police to search for a "wireless access point" inside the Robert Drive home.

According to earlier search warrant applications, police were able to determine that threatening messages sent to Christopher Coleman's work e-mail at Joyce Meyer Ministries actually were sent from a laptop computer supplied to him by his employer. Investigators located the e-mail address destroychris@gmail.com on the laptop, according to the search documents. On the same laptop, investigators reported earlier that they found a peculiar misspelling of the word opportunities that was found in threatening e-mails and in a letter sent to Robert Drive. The word was spelled "opprutunites," according to a search application.

Judge hears arguments for change of venue in Coleman murder case

Next status hearing planned for May 7

BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK - News-Democrat
Saturday, Mar. 27, 2010

WATERLOO -- Circuit Judge Milton Wharton on Friday reserved a decision on whether to order a change of venue in the first-degree murder trial of Christopher Coleman, who is accused of strangling his wife and two sons at their home in Columbia.

Belleville attorney John O'Gara asked for the change of venue because of an "overwhelming" amount of pretrial publicity, including some local and national reports he said were inflammatory and inaccurate. O'Gara presented Wharton with a foot-tall stack of copies of news reports, both from print and broadcast media.

Wharton set May 7 for the next status hearing in the case, when he might announce his decision on whether to grant the change of venue.

Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz argued that the residents of Monroe County "ought to be the ones to decide this case."

Coleman, who appeared in court in an orange Monroe County jumpsuit, was handcuffed and shacked. He was accompanied by two sheriff's deputies.

Coleman, 32, is accused of strangling his wife Sheri, 31, and sons Gavin, 9 and Garett, 11, while they slept in separate bedrooms of their family home on Robert Drive in Columbia. The bodies were found May 5.

Investigators for the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis were initially told by Coleman that he left early that morning for a workout in a nearby 24-hour gym in south St. Louis, but quickly returned home when he said Sheri failed to answer the telephone. Coleman had gone to the Columbia Police Department months earlier with claims that the family had received death threats tied with his former job as head of security for Joyce Meyer Ministries.

Before adjourning the hearing Friday, Wharton asked Coleman how he was being treated at the jail where he is being held without bail.

"Very well," Coleman answered.

I have a few things I would like to address to Chris personally.

Dear Chris,

It looks like you were planning on marrying your mistress and starting a family with her. How's that working out for you now that you've had to trade in your mistress for Bubba? If you wanted to start a new life with your mistress, there's a word that I'm trying to think of that would have been a better solution than murder. It's at the tip of my tongue, just give me a minute. Oh yeah, that would be DIVORCE you moron. But then again, you would have had to take responsibility for the family you left behind by paying alimony and child support, and you weren't man enough to take responsibility. So you decided to kill your beautiful wife and the precious children you created with her.

You once again proved yourself to be an idiot in the way you carried out your plan. The prosecution knows you setup an email account with the address destroychris@gmail.com and used your work laptop to send threatening emails to your work address. They also know that you are the one who spray-painted the crime scene with threatening messages. So much for your "elaborate" efforts to frame somebody else. The destroychris@gmail address is fitting because you have indeed managed to destroy Chris.

It gives me some peace of mind that there will be no more "opprutunites" for you to ever hurt anybody again. It doesn't matter if you get a change of venue, because the facts are still the same and your days are numbered. There will be justice for Sherri, Garret, Gavin, and the rest of their family.

Rot in hell Chris.

Sincerely,
Justice4all

Coleman murder trial: Jurors outside of Monroe County will hear case

Coleman change of venue order

BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK - Wednesday, Apr. 14, 2010

WATERLOO -- The trial of Christopher Coleman will take place in Monroe County, but the jurors will be brought to the courthouse in Waterloo from another county.

That was the crux of a court order issued Tuesday by 20th Judicial Circuit Judge Milton Wharton in response to a request by defense attorney John O'Gara for a change of venue because of massive pretrial publicity. The order did not specify which county would be used to supply jurors.

Coleman, 33, is accused of the strangulations of his wife Sheri Coleman, 31, and their sons Garett, 11 and Gavin, 9, in their Columbia home in May. Police reports state that Christopher Coleman killed his family so he could marry a Florida waitress who was a high school friend of his wife.

In March, O'Gara and Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz argued the merits of a change of venue during a hearing where Wharton presided. O'Gara said intense media coverage, including inflammatory and sometimes erroneous newspaper and broadcast reports, both locally and nationally, made it all but impossible to select jurors in Monroe County who had not already made up their minds about Coleman.

O'Gara had commissioned a survey showing that most residents of Monroe County believe Coleman is guilty.

Wharton wrote in his ruling: "This court must give strong consideration to the inherent difficulties in conducting a trial of this nature in a close-knife community where even if the jurors are sequestered, there remains an enhanced possibility of a breach of Illinois Supreme Court Rule 436(b), which even if inadvertent and/or unintentional, could result in a mistrial or compromise of a jury verdict resulting in a reversal during the appeals process."

Reitz had argued that while it might be difficult, impartial jurors could be found. He also stated that the people of Monroe County deserve to have the trial held in the jurisdiction where the murders occurred.

Wharton agreed the proceedings should be held in Monroe County. He wrote that county residents should "be given an opportunity to exhibit their capability of providing a peaceful and orderly trial forum and to have access to the proceedings."

When Coleman initially was charged, onlookers gathered outside the courthouse and shouted taunts at him such as "baby killer," "murderer" and "they finally got you."

Wharton wrote in his order: "My personal observations of the sparseness of spectators, inside and outside of the courthouse, on pretrial hearing dates indicates to me that the preliminary heated interest in this matter may have, to some degree, waned. I have not observed a repeat of previously reported individual public expressions of animus directed toward the defendant."

The judge's order continues: "It is the opinion of this court that there has been no showing, relative to locality of the trial, that there exists reasonable grounds to believe that a community passion or prejudice appears to exist in Monroe County, which would give rise to a reasonable apprehension that defendant's safety might be threatened, a jury's performance of its duties might be impeded, a 'circus-like atmosphere' might develop, or that the defendant cannot receive a fair trial. If subsequent events are to prove otherwise, there should be ample warning early in trial proceedings and opportunity for the court to chance course, before the attachment of jeopardy."

Wharton stated in his order that he'll decide later on the county from which the jurors will be chosen.

Coleman was linked to the crimes through evidence gathered by the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis. He did not confess to the killings, which he blames on an unknown assailant or assailants who sent threatening messages to him through the Internet and wrote vulgar and violent messages in red spray paint inside the house.

Police, however, according to the search-warrant documents, have linked the e-mailed threats to a computer at Joyce Meyer Ministries, where Coleman worked as head of security for the famed televangelist. He was asked to resign after evidence surfaced that he was having an affair with Tara Lintz, the waitress at a Florida dog-racing track. She has told reporters she will not comment.

Recent documents that surfaced in Monroe County Circuit Court include police reports that allege Coleman told Lintz that he would have surgery to reverse a vasectomy so he could have children with her.

A Year Ago Today: Christopher Coleman Introduced Us To A New Type Of Monster

Wednesday, May. 5 2010 @ 9:27AM

Sherry, Gavin & Garett Coleman -- Found Deceased 5/5/09 Colema10
Coleman Family

It was a bright sunny morning -- just like today -- when a year ago Christopher Coleman called the Columbia, Illinois, police.

The 32-year-old Coleman, an evangelical Christian and bodyguard for a televangelist, said he was at the gym for a pre-dawn workout and was concerned that his wife Sheri and their two young boys, Garett and Gavin, weren't answering the home phone.

Police arrived at Coleman's house at 6:52 a.m. on May 5, 2009, to find Sheri and the boys strangled to death and graffiti spray-painted on the walls of the home. Later police would discover that Coleman kept a mistress in Florida, and told the woman he would soon be leaving his wife to marry her.

Authorities would also discover that the email threats that Coleman said he had received from a mad-man bent on killing him and his family originated from Coleman's personal laptop computer.

Coleman has maintained his innocence. A trial is scheduled for later this year in Monroe County. Last month a judge agreed to bring in jurors from outside the St. Louis region on the belief that local residents may have already formed an opinion about Coleman.

Ya think?

Murder trial set for Coleman in strangulation deaths of wife, 2 sons

He remains in jail in Monroe County

BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK - News-Democrat
Saturday, May. 15, 2010

Sherry, Gavin & Garett Coleman -- Found Deceased 5/5/09 Chris-10

WATERLOO -- A judge on Friday set a firm date for the beginning of the capital murder trial of Christopher Coleman for Oct. 25.

Also, St. Clair County Circuit Judge Milton Wharton set a June 4 hearing on motions by Coleman's lead attorney, John O'Gara, to switch the custody of certain court records from Monroe County to St. Clair County.

The records involve expense vouchers presented by the defense to the state capital litigation fund. O'Gara has said that because the Monroe County Circuit Clerk Aaron Reitz is the father of the county's state's attorney, Kris Reitz, a conflict could potentially occur.

Wharton turned over several large sealed envelopes of vouchers to St. Clair County Circuit Clerk Brendan Kelly after Coleman, who sat handcuffed and shackled, was allowed to examine them to make sure the court imposed seals had not been broken. Kelly will maintain custody of these records until the motion to switch jurisdiction has been decided.

Coleman, 33, is accused of killing his wife Sheri Coleman, 31, and sons Garett, 11, and Gavin, 9, in May of last year. All three victims were strangled. If Coleman is convicted, he faces the death penalty.

He remains in the Monroe County Jail without bail.

No one shows up to bid on Christopher Coleman's house in Columbia, Illinois

May 25, 2010
By Kathleen Berger

KSDK -- The Columbia, Illinois home where Christopher Coleman allegedly strangled his wife and two young sons to death has been sold back to the bank.

The home went for just over $256,419.96 at a foreclosure sale to the mortgage holder, Wells Fargo. No potential buyers showed up for the auction in Monroe County.

Sheri Coleman and her two young sons, Gavin and Garett were found strangled the morning of May 5, 2009 in the home.

Chris Coleman is set to go on trial October 25 for the killings. He has pleaded not guilty and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

When the Coleman's bought the home in 2005, they paid $212,000. The house was being sold "as is", and was not available for inspection. Court documents show that Chris Coleman owed the bank almost $245,000.

Jackie Ortiz with the Judicial Sales Corporation, based in Chicago, started the auction by announcing the bid by Wells Fargo Bank.

One of Coleman's neighbors, a trustee of the homeowner's association, said she had hoped a family would show, buy the house, and move in soon.

"To see it sitting vacant now is just a reminder. There's no activity. Nothing. So it's just a reminder of what has happened," said Susan Walla.

Walla said her 10-year-old daughter used to play with the Coleman boys and was traumatized by the murders.

"I'm hoping for healing for all of us," said Walla.

Another neighbor, George Heine, wants to see the house demolished because he feels it reminds the neighborhood kids of what happened which is something he says still gives them nightmares to this day.

And Walla said her daughter is just beginning to get over her fears, and is just now starting to get back out in the neighborhood playing with kids again.

A spokesperson for Wells Fargo Bank tells NewsChannel 5 that it does not have a timetable for putting the house on the market. Because of the extraordinary circumstances involving the home, Wells Fargo will take time to determine how to best move forward.

Bank buys Columbia home, site of Coleman family murders

Wednesday, May. 26, 2010
BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK - News-Democrat

WATERLOO -- The bank that had the mortgage to the Columbia home where the Coleman family was found strangled bought the home at an auction Tuesday.

Wells Fargo Bank bought it for $256,419.96 during a 30-second sale at an entrance to the Monroe County Courthouse.

Jackie Ortiz, of Judicial Sales Corp., conducted the sale. There were no other bidders.

Susan Walla, of the Columbia Lakes Homeowners Association, attended the sale. She found herself surrounded by reporters eager to interview someone at a sale that attracted few onlookers.

"I wanted to see what this was all about," she said, as microphones were held a few inches from her face.

"I'm a little surprised," she said about the sale's failure to attract more bidders.

"I thought someone might want to get a bargain." Walla told a television reporter that as for herself, she would never live in the former Coleman home because of the notoriety of what happened there.

Walla said her children once played with the Coleman chidren.

Sheri Coleman, 31, Garett Coleman, 11, and Gavin Coleman, 9, were found strangled in their Columbia home at 2854 Robert Drive on May 5, 2009.

Christopher Coleman, Sheri Coleman's husband and father of the children, is facing murder charges in the case.

Court records have shown that $247,026 was owed on the house.

An attorney for Sheri Coleman's family, Jack Carey of Belleville, has said there is no equity in the home because of a second mortgage taken by the Colemans just months before the slayings. The home was originally mortgaged March 2, 2005, for $202,269. Sheri Coleman signed a quit-claim deed on her house in October 2008, turning over complete ownership to her husband. She co-signed a new mortgage the same day for $230,850.

Vigil For Sherry Coleman And Her Sons

Theresa Woodard FOX2now.com
9:56 PM CDT, May 5, 2010

Columbia, IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Wednesday marked a painful anniversary in Columbia, Illinois: one year since the murders of Sheri Coleman and her sons Gavin and Garett, allegedly at the hands of the man who was supposed to love them most. While accused killer Christopher Coleman sat in jail awaiting his trial, Sheri's best friends tried to help a grieving community heal.

"You know, Sheri would've been strong," said Meegan Turnbeaugh, one of Sheri's best friends. So she and Kathy LaPlante were strong too.

"I believe that together, we can encourage and uplift each other," said Kathy. "It's a night to heal and help."

It's natural on an anniversary to look back, Meegan and Kathy want the 75 or so people who came to a vigil in a Columbia city park Wednesday night to look ahead too. They want them to live each day with a little bit of Sheri, Gavin, and Garett inside of them.

"I mean they were full of energy, full of life, full of hope," said Meegan.

In the last 12 months, Columbia has learned while there is comfort in candles and songs and tears, the most comfort is in just being together. So after a year where everything has felt so wrong, standing together just felt right. The hard part is missing the three people they wish to be with the most.

Police found the bodies of 31 year old Sheri, 11 year old Garett, and 9 year old Gavin Coleman on the morning of May 5, 2009, inside their home. Christopher Coleman was arrested 15 days later and charged with three counts of first degree murder. If he's convicted, he could face the death penalty.

At the vigil, no one mentioned Christopher's name. Instead, they told stories. They gave life to the memories of Sheri, Garett, and Gavin. They talked of the boys wrestling, stealing pillows off couches and then riding them down a flight of stairs. They talked about Sheri's love of tanning in the sun, wearing high heels, eating special popcorn from her hometown of Chicago, and spontaneously breaking into song and dance wherever she was. They talked about her deep faith, her love of children, her love of her children.

Members of Gavin and Garett's baseball teams were there, holding candles and holding back tears.

"When we look at the sun and how bright it is, and feel the beautiful wind that goes across your face, we just automatically think of Sheri and the boys, she was that ray of sunshine," said Kathy. "A pocketful of sunshine," said Meegan. "She was a pocketful of sunshine, it's a song and she used to sing it. We'd go rolling down the street and she'd be singing in the car," said Kathy.

Sheri's cousin, Joe Miglio, attended the vigil, representing the family. "We miss them," he said, "but having all these shoulders to lean on makes it better." Joe, Meegan, and Kathy swear they still feel Sheri's presence. Especially when Kathy and Meegan visit the cemetery. "I love deer, love to look at them watch them, and deer don't come out in middle of day," said Meegan. "But the last two times we've visited the cemetery, we're sitting by the graves and here comes this mama and baby doe, and very close to us, and it's like, 'Oh my gosh. Wow.' You feel the presence. She'll always be in our heart. Right now we have a gaping hole, but it's closing, it'll always be scarred, but knowing we're doing something helps us heal."

Keeping these trial dates straight on the calendar is getting to be a lot more work than I thought. What is with these defense attorneys always challenging the constitutionality of the death penalty? Casey Anthony's attorneys failed and Coleman's attorneys will also fail.

Coleman triple murder trial delayed until 2011; defense challenging death penalty

BY GEORGE PAWLACZYK - News-Democrat
Saturday, Jul. 10, 2010

Sherry, Gavin & Garett Coleman -- Found Deceased 5/5/09 Chris-10

WATERLOO -- After a flurry of defense motions was filed Friday, most of which concerned the state's death penalty, Circuit Judge Milton Wharton postponed until next year the first-degree murder trial of Christopher Coleman, accused of strangling his wife and two young sons.

The trial is now tentatively set for January or February. The delay from the previous Oct. 25 trial start date was needed because of the scheduling of expert witnesses and to allow the defense time to fully prepare.

Belleville attorney John O'Gara, who heads the defense team for the accused 33-year-old former head of security for Joyce Meyer Ministries in Missouri, presented Wharton with 26 motions, varying in length from two to 13 pages.

The pile of paperwork challenges the Illinois death penalty on several levels, from whether it is constitutional to whether it should be barred in the Coleman case because since 1977, when it was reinstituted in the state, 20 male prisoners in Illinois "have been exonerated and released from prison." During this same time, 12 men were executed.

The motions also seek Wharton's permission to allow the defense to specifically question potential trial jurors about their views toward the death penalty.

Sheri Coleman, 32, and sons Gavin, 9, and Garett, 12, were found dead May 5, 2009, in separate upstairs bedrooms of the family's Columbia home on Robert Drive. They were killed in their beds and, in the case of the boys, obscene graffiti was spray-painted on their bed coverings. On the first floor of the house, which has been repossessed by a bank, the word "Punished" and obscene graffiti was sprayed in red paint.

On that morning, a surveillance camera set up at the home of a neighboring Columbia police officer caught Christopher Coleman leaving before 6 a.m. for a workout at a south St. Louis County gym. According to court documents, he called his home and, after claiming to get no answer, called police and rushed home. Investigators found a rear basement screen pushed out, but found no footprints or other evidence of an intruder inside.

Police documents state that Coleman, who is in the Monroe County Jail without bail, wanted to divorce Sheri Coleman and marry his girlfriend, Tara Lintz, a Florida dog track waitress. Lintz was a high school friend of Sheri Coleman's.

Christopher Coleman was the personal bodyguard for Meyer.

I agree, J4A.... if ANYONE ever deserved the DP... it is Coleman!!!! He murdered his wife and two innocent children for his greedy, selfish self...... people like him are who the DP was put into place for!!!!

Really, though, the reason they challenge it is not because they think they can change the law with that motion.... but they set it up so that if the DP is ever removed, they are covered.

Although I don't understand why they need to bother. If someone is on death row... and before they are executed, the DP is taken away, they are NOT going to be put to death anyway..... their sentence would automatically be commuted to LWOP....

I am pretty sure I have heard of an instance where a death row inmate was commuted to just Life..... and ended up getting paroled..... I can't remember a name... and I could even be mistaken....

Judge delays Coleman trial until next year

BY NICHOLAS J.C. PISTOR
Friday, July 9, 2010 4:04 pm

A judge on Friday delayed Chris Coleman's murder trial until next year to give his attorneys more time to prepare.

They told Circuit Judge Milton Wharton that the complex nature of the case made it impossible for them to be ready for the original October trial date.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, which mandates specialized legal hurdles and procedures.

Wharton said he would set a new trial date in either January or February.

Coleman, a 33 year-old former security chief for international televanglist Joyce Meyer, faces three counts of first-degree murder for the May 2009 strangulation deaths of his wife, Sheri, and their two young sons at their home in Columbia, Ill.

Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz disclosed Friday in court that he planned to use hearsay evidence in the case. He did specify what that might be, but it could include police statements from family friends describing the rocky state of the Coleman marriage.

Defense attorneys said they would seek to bar any such testimony. Civil attorneys for Sheri Coleman's family made public earlier this year a police statement from Kathy LaPlante, a former Joyce Meyer Ministry secretary. In the document, LaPlante told police Sheri Coleman was afraid of her husband, and that she often tearfully told her details of the couple's stormy marriage.

She wrote in one passage that in February 2009, "Sheri called me at 7 a.m. and she was again hysterically crying and said that if anything happened to her, Chris did it."

Police allege Coleman killed his family to escape his marriage without a divorce, to be with a girlfriend in Florida. He has pleaded not guilty.

The issue of hearsay evidence has come under fire in the highly publicized Drew Peterson murder case near Chicago. A judge in that case has barred considerable hearsay testimony, but proscuters have appealed the issue.

The Coleman case has received much media attention, which prompted Wharton to order that jurors from outside Monroe County will hear the evidence. The trial will be held in Waterloo, the county seat of Monroe County.

I think they can get a conviction without the hearsay evidence in this case, but I still think it should be allowed. Even if they don't normally allow hearsay evidence from the statements of a deceased person, they should allow it in cases where the deceased person was the victim of the crime. There are many cases where women told friends if anything happened to them, their husband did it. When a woman says that to a friend and then ends up murdered, I think the friend should be allowed to include the victim's statement in their testimony.

Sometimes that still doesn't save them. My daughter's husband beat her up, she took the kids, moved out and pressed charges on him, with an RO. 6 months later, they had to drive to another town to a lawyer's office for the checks from selling property. The lawyer's office divided the payout into checks for each one of them. When they got back to our town, he ran her off the road. When she got out of her car, he beat her again, and took her check away from her. I made her take him back to court and she told me he said he would kill her if she ever took him back to court. Two weeks after going back to court, where they didn't even mention the 5 year suspended sentence he was under from the first beating nor the RO, he broke her door down and beat and stabbed her 27 times, breaking the blades of 4 kitchen knives off in her. I was not allowed to testify what she told me when I made her take out warrants against him again. The magistrate also heard her say that, and they wouldn't let him testify to it either.

At his trial, the judge would not allow the DA to even mention his previous assaults against her. He was found guilty of Vol. Manslaughter, and only served a little over 8 years.

Police still tracking murder suspect Coleman's calls

BY NICHOLAS J.C. PISTOR
Thursday, October 28, 2010 12:05 am

COLUMBIA, Ill. • Police obtained fresh search warrants last week for cell phone data as they continue to build a murder case against Christopher Coleman, charged in the deaths of his wife and two sons.

Associate Judge Stephen Rice signed off on the warrants on Oct. 20, which enable investigators to access "PIN" messages — a form of text message specific to BlackBerry phones — from the mobile devices of Coleman, his wife, Sheri, and his alleged mistress, Tara Lintz.

The warrants apply to all PIN logs from May 4, 2009, the day before the bodies were found, to Oct. 13, 2010.

The court documents don't indicate whether any information was gleaned from the message logs. Police have declined to discuss the case.

New details released in Coleman case

BY NICHOLAS J.C. PISTOR
Wednesday, December 8, 2010 9:30 am

WATERLOO • Any right Christopher Coleman has to cross-examine his murdered wife about statements she had made about him to friends was forfeited when he killed her, prosecutors said in court documents filed Tuesday.

Prosecutors released new details concerning the case as part of a motion to use such statements as evidence in his upcoming first-degree murder trial.

Coleman, the former security chief for the Joyce Meyer Ministries, is charged with strangling his wife, Sheri, and two preteen sons, Garett and Gavin, in their home in Columbia, Ill.

Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz said Sheri Coleman told friends that her husband beat her up, and texted at least two of them, saying: "Chris wants a divorce. He said me and my kids are in the way of his job. He told me he's leaving me for his job! But if Joyce (Meyer) finds out she will fire him. It got so bad I told Joyce. He was [angry] to say the least but that was the breaking point. She forced him into counseling."

WATERLOO, IL (KTVI - FOX2now.com) — An Illinois Judge listened to stories from 11 people, about Sheri Coleman's reported family struggles before her murder. Police found Sheri and her sons Gavin and Garret strangled May 5th 2009. Destiny Church minister Vincent Hall shared several stories with the court. Hall said he knew Sheri for several years, while working with her at the church.

He said Sheri texted her about marriage problems and he said he even prayed over Sheri and Chris two days before the murders. He said he put his hand on suspect Chris Coleman's shoulder and said he had faith God would repair their marriage. Hall said he saw tears in Chris Coleman's eyes. Then two days later police would find his wife and kids strangled.

Will Coleman jury see sex videos?

BY BETH HUNDSDORFER - News-Democrat
Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011

WATERLOO -- A judge, defense lawyers and prosecutors on Friday afternoon viewed sexually explicit videos, photographs, texts and e-mails exchanged by Christopher Coleman and his mistress, Tara Lintz, to determine whether a jury will see them at Coleman's upcoming trial.

William Margulis, one of Coleman's defense attorneys, argued the sexually explicit material would be "highly prejudicial" to the Columbia man, who is accused of killing his wife and two young sons.

Monroe County State's Attorney Kris Reitz countered the correspondence, dated as early as September 2008, between Lintz, a Tampa, Fla., dog track waitress, and Coleman demonstrated the nature, intensity and audacity of the affair.

"They offer a glimpse of some pretty despicable behavior," Reitz said.

Expert witness: Coleman's writing style is consistent with graffiti found at murder scene

BY BETH HUNDSDORFER - News-Democrat
Friday, Mar. 18, 2011

A forensic linguist testified on Friday that e-mailed threats, threatening letters and spray-painted graffiti at the murder scene were "consistent" with documents written by murder suspect Christopher Coleman.

Circuit Judge Milton Wharton will decide whether Robert Leonard, a forensic linguist at Hofstra University in New York, will testify at Coleman's upcoming murder trial.

Leonard testified that people have certain patterns in their written words that allow a forensic linguist to determine whether documents may have the same author.

Joyce Meyer to testify at Coleman trial via recorded deposition

BY NICHOLAS J.C. PISTOR
Posted: Monday, April 4, 2011 1:30 pm

Joyce Meyer will testify at the murder trial of her former bodyguard via a recorded deposition, according to court documents filed today.

Prosecutors said Meyer, an internationally known Fenton-based televangelist, will be unavailable for Christopher Coleman's murder trial scheduled to start April 25. As a remedy, Meyer will submit to questioning from lawyers in the form of a recorded deposition, which will be shown to jurors at trial.

Christopher Coleman was pulling down a six-figure salary and traveling across the globe as the security chief for Meyer. Friends have testified that Sheri Coleman, his slain wife, had confided that Christopher felt she and their two sons were in the way of his career. They testified that Sheri had said Christopher didn't see divorce as an option because it would cost him his job.

KMOV) -- For the first time, televangelist Joyce Meyer is answering questions about the Christopher Coleman murder case. The accused murderer was Meyer’s former head of security.

On Wednesday afternoon, Meyer met at the Monroe County Courthouse where Coleman’s triple murder trial will take place in a few weeks. Meyer was there to testify about what she knows about Coleman and the case. She arrived at the courthouse with her son Dan, the CEO of her ministry. She did not speak to the media on her way into the courtroom and was inside answering questions for about an hour.

Circuit Judge James Campanella provided the jurors with little additional information other than the defendant's name, Christopher Coleman. He didn't tell them the sensational specifics of the alleged crime, or that Coleman is the former Marine accused of strangling his family and then staging the crime scene with threatening messages spray painted Charles Manson-style on the walls.

Jury Begins Decision In Coleman Case

Closing Arguments Have Ended And Jury Begins Deliberations

Chris Hayes Investigator
4:05 p.m. CDT, May 4, 2011

WATERLOO, IL - (KTVI-FOX2now.com)—
Closing arguments by the prosecution and defense have been given in the Christopher Coleman triple murder case on Wednesday afternoon. The jury has begun its deliberations to decide Christopher Coleman's fate. A verdict could come at any time.

Wednesday afternoon Tony Romanucci, a lawyer for Sheri Coleman's family, announced they filed a civil lawsuit against Chris Coleman Joyce Meyers Ministries. He says that if the Ministry had enforced its policies and followed up on Coleman's strange behavior then the murders could have been avoided. They did not specify an amount they were seeking in the lawsuit.

Coleman guilty of killing family, jury says

WATERLOO • Christopher Coleman was convicted Thursday night of strangling his wife and two sons as part of a plan to start a new life with his mistress without sacrificing his job as bodyguard to televangelist Joyce Meyer.

Coleman, 34, looked exasperated as verdicts were read by the jury foreman about 7:35 p.m. in court in Waterloo on the second anniversary of the murders, finding him guilty of three counts of first-degree murder.

The decision came from a jury of 10 women and two men, who had stretched their deliberations into about 15 hours over two days.

Jury: Coleman eligible for death penalty

BY NICHOLAS J.C. PISTOR
Posted: Friday, May 6, 2011 12:15 pm

WATERLOO • The jury in the Christopher Coleman murder trial will return Monday to begin deciding his fate after finding him guilty Thursday of killing his wife and children.

On Friday, jurors heard evidence that Coleman was eligible for the death penalty in the 2009 triple murder, and quickly agreed that he was.

On Monday, a longer hearing will begin during which prosecutors will ask jurors to sentence Coleman, 34, to death. If the jury does not decide to sentence him to death, Coleman would automatically be sentenced to life in prison.

The hearing could last several days, but it appears to be only a formality. Because Illinois abolished capital punishment effective July 1, Gov. Pat Quinn has pledged to commute any death sentences delivered before then to life in prison.

(KMOV) – Christopher Coleman’s former neighbor says seeing Coleman after the triple murder of Coleman’s wife and two sons was like “staring Satan right in the face.”

Neighbor Justin Barlow says there’s not a day that goes by that he doesn’t think about the murder scene of Sheri, Garrett and Gavin Coleman. He and another officer were the first to find the victims.

Judge thwarts exhuming of Coleman bodies

BY KEVIN BERSETT AND BETH HUNDSDORFER - News-Democrat
Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011

A Randolph County judge halted a move to have the remains of Christopher Coleman's murder victims -- his wife and two children -- transferred from a Chester cemetery to his wife's hometown of Chicago.

Circuit Judge Richard A. Brown granted a temporary restraining order Monday to Coleman and his parents, Ronald and Connie Coleman, that prohibits the removal of the bodies of Sheri, Garett and Gavin Coleman until court proceedings on the matter can be held. Monday was the same day her family planned to have the remains exhumed and transferred.

Belleville attorney Jack Carey, who represents relatives of the victims, said he was disappointed but said the developments Monday were "not unanticipated."

There is a new book out about this case by Michael W. Cuneo called "One Last Kiss: The True Story of a Minister's Bodyguard, His Beautiful Mistress, and a Brutal Triple Homicide."

I haven't read it yet, but most the reviews on Amazon have been positive.

There are a couple interviews with the author at the links below.
