Re: Defense Depositions
You are welcome! They have all already been deposed. Now their depositions need to be transcribed and that's what the judge was authorizing JAC to pay for.

They sure are squeezing them in there, aren't they? I don't know how on earth they expect to do this many depos in such a short time!
Talk about waiting until the last minute. All depositions of law enforcement have to be completed by September 30, 2010.
Oh, and on top of that... September 3 is the Friday before Labor Day.....

Casey's defense questions dozens of officers
Last Updated: Friday, September 03, 2010 5:34 PM
ORLANDO -- It was one law enforcement after another in the Case Against Casey.
Anthony's defense lawyers spent all day Friday questioning law enforcement officers from the state and county. But her attorneys said it was a waste.
The lawyers got through a lot of deputies Friday. Thirty-five had originally been subpoenaed.
Anthony's defense said they shouldn't have had to question all of these law enforcement officers.
"It's the policy of this office to list every single person who drove by and waived," said Cheney Mason, one of Anthony's lawyers. "We're going to wind up taking well in excess of 100 depositions that should never have been taken."
The defense by law has to question under oath every witness the state has labeled category "A", meaning they may have material evidence likely used in trial. Anthony's attorneys said these officers aren't important and won't likely be called at trial.

They are not happy unless they are whining about something . . . so it seems. I think what they are trying to say is it is a waste of time to depo these officers. They feel they won't be called as witnesses although the State has them listed.

Re: Defense Depositions
You know when my daughter was murdered, the DA came and questioned me, and my two daughters, but the defense atty never depo'd us.
Then the DA only put one of my daughter's, Kelli, on the stand, Karen and I did not have to testify. He told me in the beginning of the trial I was not going to testify, so I was able to sit in the courtroom during the entire trial. After Kelli testified, she was able to stay in the courtroom. Since Karen was never called to testify, she had to stay in one of the jury rooms until the state rested it's case and the defense started their bullshit.
However, we were told to sit directly behind the accused, so he could not look at us without turning around, and his atty was instructed not to let him turn around.
I don't know if the defense just doesn't question the victims family or if it was just in our case.

Casey's Attorneys Question Dozens Of Officers
Posted: 6:59 am EDT September 3, 2010
Updated: 6:09 pm EDT September 3, 2010
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's defense team lined up 35 witnesses to question Friday. They were all law enforcement officers.
JUDGE'S ORDERS: Status Hearing | Set Schedules
VIDEO REPORT: Officers Questioned By Lawyers
That means dozens of cops were off the street Friday, sitting in an office away from their duties. Some of the officers spent hours just sitting and waiting.
The 35 law enforcement officers had no choice; they were subpoenaed. Some sat here for hours, not knowing when they'd be called for their depositions. Most were on duty and had other work they needed to be doing Friday.
There were homicide detectives, sex crimes detectives, a U.S. Secret Service officer and a crime scene tech, among others, all of whom had minimal roles in the first-degree murder case against Casey Anthony.
One detective told WFTV he was frustrated that he couldn't work his cases while he was waiting and said he'd never been to this kind of deposition before, where he did not have a specific appointment time. Homicide Detective Chris Dillon was one of the 17 officers who were scheduled for 1:00pm depositions.

Friday was a big day for Casey Anthony's defense. They were questioning detective Yuri Melich, the lead detective on the case. The defense says they talked about newly released evidence concerning Melich.
"Discovery that was given to us last week has substantially important things in it from Melich that they've held back from us since August 2008," said Cheney Mason, with Casey Anthony's defense.
Mason said the discovery concerns cell phone pings and new witnesses they want to talk with but he stopped short of calling them suspects.
This new evidence makes Anthony's defense team ask "what else is there to know?"

Dr. G To Be Deposed By Casey's Attorneys
Posted: 11:51 am EDT September 17, 2010
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Attorneys plan to depose several key medical witnesses in the case against Casey Anthony.
Attorneys will depose three people from the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office, including medical examiner Jan "Dr. G" Garavalia, on September 28.
Dr. G's testimony is key because she said Caylee's death was a homicide, but couldn't determine a cause of death.
Casey's lawyers have also recently picked up another 700 pages of discovery documents, which will eventually be made public.

Casey Anthony team to interview 'Body Farm' scientists
Last Updated: Sunday, September 19, 2010 1:01 PM
ORLANDO -- The Case Against Casey heads to Tennessee this week.
Casey Anthony's team of lawyers is set to interview four scientists who work at the Body Farm.
Anthony’s lawyers want to know more about tests done at the body farm for the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
Local investigators sent samples from the trunk of Anthony’s car to Tennessee to see if the scientists could detect indications of human decomposition.
The results were included in a 41-page report handed over to Orange County investigators last April.
Starting at 6 p.m. Monday, News 13’s Adam Longo takes us inside the secret facility and shows us more of the work that goes on there.

Casey Anthony team travels to Tennessee to question ‘body farm’ scientists
By Mark Jenkins, Reporter
Last Updated: Monday, September 20, 2010 8:03 AM
ORLANDO -- The case against Casey Anthony heads to Tennessee this week.
Casey’s team of defense lawyers were set to fly from Orlando International Airport to Knoxville, Tenn., Monday morning to take on some of the nation’s top scientists.
Four scientists at a so-called “Body Farm” in Knoxville claimed there could have been a decomposed body in Casey’s car in 2008, shortly after her daughter, Caylee, went missing.
The 2-year-old was found dead months later.
Anthony’s attorneys hope to find ways to prevent the Body Farm’s 41-page report from entering the court room.
The site has bodies being studied in various situations, and various stages of decomposition.
Investigators in Central Florida sent the team in Tennessee carpet and odor samples from the trunk of Casey Anthony’s car.
The scientists said they believe a portion of the total odor could be human decomposition.
The “Body Farm” science is fairly new, and air samples from a car trunk have never before been introduced as evidence in a murder case.

What’s at stake in Body Farm depositions? Central Florida News 13 explains
posted by halboedeker on September, 20 2010 6:41 PM
Casey Anthony’s attorneys arrived in Knoxville, Tenn., today for depositions with scientists at the Body Farm at the University of Tennessee.
In a report on Central Florida News 13, Anthony attorney Cheney Mason said, “These folks allegedly have some evidence to support some of the prosecution claims about the decomposition of the child.” And Mason added, “We are of the feeling that their evidence is not admissible when it’s referred to as junk science. So they can prove to us it’s not junk science. OK, but we call it junk science.”
The interview was a prelude to Central Florida News 13’s Adam Longo’s look at the Body Farm. Longo visited the Body Form four years ago and explained that then 155 bodies were spread across the farm for one-of-a-kind decomposition research.
The scientists there started testing in the Anthony case before Caylee’s remains were found, Longo explained. Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
The scientists assembled a 41-page report on the case and concluded that part of an odor in Anthony’s car trunk was consistent with decomposition that “could be of human origin,” Longo explained.
What is at stake for the defense? To make sure the report and the four scientists who wrote it aren’t part of the trial, Longo said. Air samples from a car trunk have never been introduced in a murder case, Longo added.
Anthony’s attorneys will depose the scientiests Tuesday and Wednesday.

Casey's Lawyers Question Scientists In TN

KNOXVILLE, TN. -- Casey Anthony's attorneys were in Tennessee Tuesday where they began questioning scientists from the Oak Ridge Laboratory.
RAW INTERVIEW:Attorneys Jose Baez, Cheney Mason In TN
The lab's experts said they tested air from Casey's car, which indicated there was a decomposing body in it. But Casey's lawyers are calling the findings "junk science" and don't want the evidence brought into court.
"The bottom line is their science has never been admitted in court before, anywhere. They're trying to experiment in a death penalty case in Florida. We're just not going to do that," Cheney Mason said Tuesday.
Anthony's attorneys deposed three scientists. They plan to question one more on Wednesday.

Orange County Medical Examiner To Answer Attorney's Questions

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Orange County's chief medical examiner, Dr. Jan Garavaglia, will be questioned under oath by Casey Anthony's defense team on Tuesday morning.
Dr. G, as she is known in Orlando and on her nationally-televised show, ruled Caylee Anthony's death a homicide.
Anthony's defense team is questioning Garavaglia's credibility because she never gave an exact cause of death. Garavaglia ruled, through tests and evidence, that Caylee's death was a homicide of "unknown origin."

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Orange County medical examiner, who performed an autopsy on Caylee Anthony, is answering questions under oath Tuesday. The defense was deposing three workers at the Orange County Medical Examiners' headquarters.
VIDEO REPORT:Dr. G Faces Casey's Attorneys

The autopsy report, released the next year, showed that investigators found three pieces of duct tape layered over Caylee's face, still stuck to her brown hair.
The medical examiner concluded that Caylee's remains were placed in the woods shortly after death, partly because plants had grown through her remains, indicating Caylee's body was put there months earlier.
The defense has questioned the placement of the duct tape in the past and now they want to do their own DNA tests on Caylee's shorts and the laundry bag found with her remains.
WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer says that probably indicates the defense is trying to find evidence of possible sexual abuse and evidence of another killer other than Caylee's mother, Casey.

I'm sorry, but I honestly do not think those two could be MORE rude to Kathi... they both are completely unprofessional IMO.
JB either completely ignores her, yet he will answer the Spanish-speaking reporter.... or he gives her some smart-mouthed response.
That last comment on the second video, when CM is leaving, "Kathi, you'll just have to wait for trial to find out the truth," or something to that effect is just so way beyond asinine. Most of us that have been reading all the discovery have a pretty good idea what the "truth" is..... let's see what "truth" they come up with at trial.
I should have known not to watch those stupid, stupid men!

Baez is almost always rude to people who ask him questions that shoot down his crazy theories of Casey being innocent. Maybe he is so defensive because deep down he knows he is wrong for representing an obviously guilty baby killer.

Could Dr. G’s ruling help the defense?
posted by halboedeker on September, 28 2010 6:28 PM
The defense team for Casey Anthony seemed happy with its deposition today of medical examiner Dr. Jan Garavaglia — television’s highly regarded Dr. G.
“The defense left this afternoon saying they’d gotten what they needed and didn’t answer any of our questions,” WOFL-Ch. 35’s Holly Bristow said.
WESH-Ch. 2’s Bob Kealing said the defense told him afterward, “They’re satisfied that Garavaglia’s deposition confirmed what they’ve said all along, that she can’t help the state make the case for murder because they say she doesn’t know how Caylee died.”
Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. Garavaglia ruled that the toddler died of homicide by unknown origins.
“What does it mean? That means nothing, does it? She doesn’t know why the child died or how,” defense attorney Cheney Mason told WOFL-Ch. 35 before the deposition.

What the defense would have us believe is if there is no eyewitness to a murder and there isn't any DNA because the body isn't found until it's skeltonized, then nobody should ever be charged with the crime regardless of what the circumstantial evidence shows.

Big Name Depositions Scheduled In Anthony Case
POSTED: 4:41 pm EDT October 20, 2010
UPDATED: 5:20 pm EDT October 20, 2010
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A number of high profile depositions will take place next week in the case against Casey Anthony.
Those to be deposed include Anthony’s ex-fiance, Jesse Grund, and the son of the former meter reader who discovered Caylee Anthony’s remains.
Judge Belvin Perry has set a series of deadlines for depositions in the case to take place, which is why more are now being scheduled.
Court documents indicate three of the depositions are scheduled for Tuesday, including Anthony’s former fiancée, Grund, his father, Richard Grund, and Orange County Corrections Officer Sylvia Hernandez. Hernandez was fired after allowing Anthony to exchange secret letters with a jailhouse pen pal.
On Wednesday, defense attorneys will depose lead detective Yuri Melich. He previously testified in court that Anthony’s car had the strong odor of a decomposing body.

Corrections Officer To Give Sworn Testimony Today
POSTED: 7:11 am EDT October 26, 2010
UPDATED: 10:35 am EDT October 26, 2010

An Orange County corrections officer, Sylvia Hernandez, was expected to give sworn testimony in the Anthony case.
Hernandez was fired for allowing Anthony to exchange secret letters with another inmate.
The letters, which were sent between Anthony and fellow inmate Robyn Adams, were released as evidence by the state earlier this year.
In an investigative summary, investigators wrote that Adams discussed the topic of Zenaida Gonzalez with Anthony. Anthony has told authorities Gonzalez kidnapped Caylee.
In conversations with investigators, Adams claimed Anthony made two references to Gonzalez. The first indicated "there was no Zenaida" and "Zenaida didn't do this." The second reference claimed Gonzalez was a childhood friend.
Investigators said Adams also told them that Anthony would give Caylee "stuff" to make her sleep.
Anthony and Adams discussed chloroform, and Anthony told Adams she would give the toddler "antihistamines or something" because she had difficulties getting her to take naps.

Lead detective in Anthony case to be deposed by defense

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - One of the main figures in the case against Casey Anthony is set to be grilled by the defense Wednesday.
Casey Anthony stands accused of murdering her daughter in 2008. The lead detective from the Orange County Sheriffs office, Corporal Yuri Melich, will be deposed by the defense team. The defense contends that from the beginning Melich has pegged Casey Anthony as the sole suspect.
The defense says there is no evidence to back up the detectives claim.
Melich has been questioned by the defense before; the last time he was deposed he was questioned about a discovery related to cell phone records of a potential witness.
Thursday the subject of the questioning will be if Melich has considered anyone else but Casey Anthony as a suspect in the murder.

Even IF the story about her dropping her off at the apartment stairs was true, she never said Zanny was there to take Caylee inside...Come on now...we all can surmise that Casey did the deed, accident or not..I hope Melich tears Bozo a new one over this...and twists it while he's at it...Little Witchy Poo can fly away while we all stir the pot

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Casey Anthony's lawyers are deposing the lead FBI agent on the case Thursday, Special Agent Nick Savage. Savage and other federal agents were called in to investigate the out-of-state leads.
Former meter reader Roy Kronk's son was to be deposed Thursday as well, but court records show Brandon Sparks is not cooperating. Sparks claims Kronk, who found Caylee's remains, appeared to have inside information.
On Friday, Judge Belvin Perry will again hear arguments on whether to seal some of Casey Anthony's jail records. The new argument is based on a recent appeals court ruling.
However, prosecutors say the ruling isn't relevant in the case, because it applies to personal phone calls and not phone, visitation and jail account records.
Meanwhile, one of Casey's defense witnesses, who is under investigation for allegedly falsifying records, has a new lawyer. Texas EquuSearch volunteer Laura Buchanan has hired a Fort Lauderdale attorney.
Buchanan is accused of trying to help Casey by falsifying search records to make it appear that Caylee's body was not in the woods three months before she was found there.
