Family, friends seek help in finding missing Woodstock woman

May 30, 2010 9:57 AM

Beth Bentley -- Missing 5/23/10 Beth-b10

Friends and relatives of a 41-year-old Woodstock woman are asking for the public's help in locating her after she went missing on May 23.

Police in the northwest suburban city confirmed this morning that Beth Bentley was reported missing, but declined to provide additional information.

According to a friend, Bentley traveled by Amtrak train to Centralia on May 21 with a friend to visit other friends and was scheduled to return to Woodstock alone the following Sunday night.

"This is not like Beth at all" to be out of contact with family and friends for any extended period of time, Angela Montgomery said. "She's a serial caller, a serial texter."

The friend, who intended to stay an additional day, dropped her off at the Centralia train station to catch a 6:08 p.m. train to Union Station in Chicago, but that was the last time anyone saw her, said Montgomery, a family friend. It is unclear if Bentley got on the train at that station, which Montgomery said is not manned by security guards or equipped with cameras.

Bentley was scheduled to arrive at Union Station by about 10 p.m. and take a Metra train to Woodstock, but she never arrived home, Montgomery said.

Scott Bentley, her husband, reported her missing on May 24, she said. Bentley has three sons, ages 10, 18 and 21.

Montgomery hopes that by raising awareness of Bentley's disappearance -- via news media, word-of-mouth and a Facebook page -- that someone who may have seen Bentley at the train station or aboard the train will contact authorities.

Bentley is described as 5-foot-6 and 160 pounds with blond hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a black tank top, blue denim miniskirt and carrying a pink and orange overnight Vera Bradley bag.

"The thing is, Beth is very memorable," Montgomery said. "Somebody standing on that Centralia, Ill., platform would remember her."

Montgomery asked that anyone with information about Bentley's whereabouts contact Woodstock police at 815-338-2131.

Reward offered for information on location of missing woman

Thursday, June 10, 2010 5:30 a.m. CDT

WOODSTOCK – The Woodstock and McHenry County CrimeStoppers are offering $2,000 for information that leads to the whereabouts of Benedetta “Beth” Bentley.

Bentley, a 41-year-old Woodstock mother of three, has been missing since May 23.

She traveled with a female friend by car to the Centralia area May 20.

The friend told police that she dropped Bentley off near the Centralia Amtrak station about 5:30 p.m.

Police have been unable to verify whether Bentley ever boarded a train from that station. Bentley’s cell phone and credit cards have had no activity since May 23, police said.

Bentley last was seen wearing a black tank top, blue jean mini skirt and flip flops and carrying a large white purse and a pink and orange Vera Bradley overnight bag.

If anyone has any information, call the Woodstock Police Department at 815-338-2131 or CrimeStoppers at 800-762-7867.

This doesn't sound good at all.......it's surprising that they can't determine if she boarded the train or not.

9-month-old mystery

Police continue to investigate as rifts open among family members

By Dan Hinkel, Tribune reporter
11:04 p.m. CST, March 10, 2011

After taking her 10-year-old son to Dairy Queen to celebrate his baseball team's victory, Beth Bentley packed her shoulder bag, telling her husband she'd be back in three days from a weekend visit to Wisconsin with a friend.

She never returned. In the nine months since that weekend, she hasn't called home. The 42-year-old mother of three from Woodstock simply vanished.

Her family's confusion was compounded by an unsettling revelation delivered the night she was reported missing — she didn't go to Wisconsin. Instead, her traveling companion told police they went to southern Illinois to visit friends.

Thank you, Justice for this article. I have not heard of this case.

I think Bentley's friend and the friend's boyfriend should be looked at closely by Law Enforcement.

I find it strange that two middle age women would lie about where they were going for the week-end. They are not teeny boppers!

Her credit cards have not been used since she went missing. No activity. This does not sound good. Hope Beth Bentley is found soon.

Family, friends remember missing woman 1 year after disappearance

By CHELSEA McDOUGALL
May 22, 2011 5:30 a.m. CDT

WOODSTOCK – A friend of a missing Woodstock wife and mother says she is done protecting the people who she thinks know something about what happened to Beth Bentley the weekend she disappeared.

Monday marks one year since Bentley last was seen. Her family and friends will host a balloon release in her honor at 3 p.m. today at Emricson Park at the top of the sled hill in Woodstock.

Angela Montgomery thinks that Bentley’s friend Jenn Wyatt has the keys to the case that has stymied police and frustrated family members. Montgomery does not believe Wyatt’s account of her last moments with Bentley.

Wyatt repeatedly has said she dropped Bentley off at a Centralia train station after a weekend trip to Mount Vernon.

“Remember, nobody in Centralia ever saw Beth,” Montgomery said. “Nobody that got off at those trains, nobody that was at that open restaurant that sunny night. Nobody on the streets of Centralia. You notice Beth. You did.”

Attorney in Bentley case says there's no crime

By SARAH SUTSCHEK
Thursday, June 28, 2012 2:49 p.m. CDT

WOODSTOCK – An attorney for a woman accused of lying to police as they investigated her friend's disappearance is asking a judge to toss the case, saying prosecutors haven't actually stated a crime.

Jennifer Wyatt-Paplham, 38, of Woodstock was charged in March with two counts of obstructing justice related to Beth Bentley, who was last seen May 23, 2010.

Police have said that Wyatt lied to them when she said she did not have contact with Bentley on or after May 25, 2010. They also say that Wyatt lied when she said she dropped Bentley off at an Amtrak station in Centralia so that Bentley could take a train back to Chicago.
