STORY HIGHLIGHTS
NEW YORK (CNN) -- After a nearly year-long investigation, police say they now believe 10 sets of human remains uncovered along a desolate stretch of Long Island, New York, beach are linked to a single killer.
"The theory is now that we're dealing with one serial killer," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer told CNN affiliate WABC on Tuesday.
He noted the killer did not "necessarily do the same thing all the time."
"What's common here is the dumping ground," he added.

Latest theory in NY mystery bodies: 1 killer of 10
By FRANK ELTMAN, The Associated Press
Posted Nov. 30, 2011, at 10:17 p.m.
YAPHANK, N.Y. — When four bodies were found last December strewn along a remote barrier beach south of New York’s Long Island, police figured they were dealing with a serial killer. When the remains of six others were uncovered later, they widened the possibility to multiple killers using the same dumping ground.
On Wednesday, the Suffolk County police commissioner told The Associated Press in an interview that detectives now think one person is probably responsible for all 10 deaths dating back to 1996.
But the veteran police official, who retires at the end of the year, isn’t betting the ranch that he’s right.
“Looking at the common denominators involved with the dumping ground, the type of victims, the dismemberments, all on Long Island. Our theory is that it’s probably one serial killer,” Richard Dormer said in an interview in his office.

THE DOCUMENTARY "Long Island Serial Killer"
WHEN | WHERE Monday night at 9 on A&E
Marking the anniversary of the discovery of human remains at Oak Beach, A&E and British production company Blast! Films have pieced together a portrait of one of the most shocking serial murder cases in Long Island history. Viewed partly from the perspective of the victims' families, it's searing and often difficult to watch, but also the most complete television account to date. Many of the details of the case have already appeared in this paper, but the power of the program lies in its scope and perspective -- of the lives lost and of a sex industry hidden from public view that aided and ultimately abetted a killer, or killers.

Re: Long Island Killings: 10 Sets of Human Remains Linked To One Serial Killer
The following is information that I have gathered through several news articles and condensed in my own words.
A search that began with the disappearance of 24 year old Shannan Gilbert, led to the gruesome discovery of 10 bodies that had been dumped along Ocean Parkway. None of the bodies found belonged to Shannan, who was last seen running from a home in the Oak Beach community. She had placed an escort ad on Craigslist and allegedly met the home owner who has stated that he had no intimate contact with her.
Four bodies were found in the initial search. They have been identified as follows:
Amber Lynn Costello, age 27
Megan Waterman, age 22
Maureen Brainard-Barnes, age 28
Melissa Barthelemy, age 24
Each of the four above were last seen planning to meet clients through Craigslist.
Jessica Taylor, age 20
Three unidentified women
A Young Asian man, between the ages of 17 - 23, believed to have died wearing women's clothing and believed to have been involved in the sex trade
A Toddler, DNA tests shows to be a daughter of one of the female victims

Long Island serial killer has covered his tracks and evaded capture by 'watching CSI shows'
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 6:21 PM on 2nd December 2011
The Long Island serial killer, wanted for the murders of 10 people, may have learnt how to cover his tracks by watching television crime dramas like CSI.
The investigation's leading officer said that a familiarity with such shows, which have popularised the techniques of crime scene investigation, could explain how the killer has avoided capture and delayed the identification of his victims.
The theory comes after the police said that they are now looking for a single killer for the deaths of eight women, a man and a baby whose remains have been found over the past year.
snipped~
The killer has attempted to remove an identifying tattoo from one of the victims and has dismembered the bodies before dumping the remains in different locations on the island in efforts apparently to thwart the identification of his victims.
Only five of the 10 victims have been identified, all of those identified were women working as escorts who advertised on Craigslist.
snipped~
The killer is believed to have been operating for 15 years.
'It’s a long period of time. The theory is he’s familiar with and comfortable with the Long Island area,' said Mr Dormer in The Times report.
'He covered the distances between where the body parts were dumped – this person would be driving with remains in the vehicle. He had to be very comfortable with where he was.'

Long Island serial killer body count going up
10:13 AM, Dec 5, 2011
UNDATED (CNN) -- It's been almost a year now since police in New York first discovered four bodies near a Long Island beach. Since then, they've found another six sets of remains in the area. Now, they believe the killings are the work of a single serial killer.
snipped~
Maureen Brainard-Barnes left her home in Norwich, Connecticut in 2007. She told her sister she had a weekend modeling job in New York City, and then vanished.
Three years later, in December 2010, police found her sister's body wrapped in burlap. Her sister was told Maureen was strangled.
snipped~
The family of Melissa Barthelemy in Buffalo, New York is also grieving and, like Cann, is not surprised that a single killer is now suspected. He used Barthelemy's own cell phone seven times to taunt her little sister after she vanished. In one call, the family attorney says, the killer even confessed. Steve Cohen, the Barthelemy's family attorney says, "He is cold. He is very precise. He is very disciplined. And he is the quintessential monster."

NY remains are identified as those of Shannan Gilbert
By the CNN Wire Staff
updated 5:30 PM EST, Sat December 17, 2011
New York (CNN) -- A New York medical examiner's office said Saturday that a body discovered this week along a remote stretch of Long Island beach was that of Shannan Gilbert, the missing New Jersey woman whose disappearance led investigators to 10 sets of human remains and the hunt for a possible serial killer.
Gilbert, 24, vanished in May 2010 after visiting a client. Police say the Jersey City resident advertised for prostitution services on websites such as Craigslist.
Her body was uncovered Tuesday in the wooded marshes of Suffolk County's Oak Beach. The cause of her death has not yet been determined, Suffolk County police said in a statement.

But unlike other victims found scattered across Suffolk and Nassau counties, Gilbert is not thought to have been murdered by a suspected serial killer, police have said.

He is most likely a white male in his mid-20s to mid-40s. He is married or has a girlfriend. He is well educated and well spoken. He is financially secure, has a job and owns an expensive car or truck. He may have sought treatment at a hospital for poison ivy infection. As part of his job or interests, he has access to, or a stockpile of, burlap sacks.
Jim Clemente, a retired F.B.I. criminal profiler, said of the Long Island mystery killer, “He likes the suffering of others.” And he lives or used to live on or near Ocean Parkway on the South Shore of Long Island, where the police have found as many as 10 sets of human remains.
