Members of a bereaved American family are on their way to the tropical island paradise of the Seychelles to try and solve the mystery of what killed two sisters in their shared resort room, and to bring their bodies home.

CBS Denver reports Annie Korkki, 37, and Robin Korkki, 42, were found dead in their villa at the posh Maia Luxury Resort on the Seychelles, a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean about 900 miles from the coast of East Africa.

Local media have reported the sisters were found without any clear signs of physical attack or obvious trauma to their bodies.

The Seychelles Nation newspaper said the women had to be helped to their room by resort staff after drinking the night before they were found, according to CBS Denver. Resort staff found the women in their room and reported it to the police on Sept. 22.

Facebook pictures showed the sisters enjoying their time in the Seychelles for at least a week before they were found dead. According to the Seychelles News Agency’s website, they had been due to depart the island and fly home on Sept. 24.

Autopsies revealed in mysterious death of sisters at tropical resort

New York Post
Fri, Sep 30 8:44 AM PDT

By Jamie Schram

Autopsies on two American sisters at a tropical island resort in Africa show that the women died from a buildup of fluid in their lungs and brains, authorities said Friday.

The medical reports on Robin Korkki, 42, and Anne Korkki, 37, did not answer the key question of how they died, but toxicology tests were still being performed, officials said.

Police spokesman Jean Toussaint told NBC News that the sisters’ official cause of death was “acute pulmonary edema” and “acute pulmonary and cerebral edema.”

Pulmonary edema is typically caused by heart problems brought on by pneumonia, exposure to certain toxins and medications, trauma to the chest wall and exercising or living at high elevations, according to the Mayo Clinic’s website. It can affect any part of the body, including the brain.

Their bodies were discovered on Sept. 22 inside their $1,800 per night villa at the Maia Luxury Resort and Spa on the East African island of Seychelles, officials said.

Police: Autopsies done for sisters found dead in Seychelles

San Francisco Chronicle Fri, Sep 30 2:45 AM PDT

VICTORIA, Seychelles (AP) — Two American sisters found dead in their tropical island villa while vacationing in Seychelles died of excess fluid in their lungs, according to police in the African archipelago nation.

Annie Marie Korkki, 37, and Robin Marie Korkki, 42, were found motionless in the bed of their villa last week by hotel staff at the Maia resort on Mahe, Seychelles' main island. Police spokesperson Jean Toussaint told local media that the women were seen drinking and were helped to their room by hotel personnel the night before they were found dead.

Autopsies conducted Wednesday determined the Minnesota natives died from acute pulmonary edema, or having fluid in their lungs, according to a police report obtained by Minnesota television station KARE. Cerebral edema, or fluid in the brain, was also cited in Annie Korkki's death.

The report also said no visible signs of injuries were found.

Police said the autopsies were conducted by a forensic pathologist in the neighboring Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. The investigation is ongoing and toxicology tests are pending, police said.

The mystery of what led to the deaths of two vacationing American sisters in their tropical island villa likely won’t be solved until investigators see the results of toxicology tests. The question that keeps arising for U.S. medical experts reading the news from afar is: Why did both sisters die?

Annie Marie Korkki, 37, of Denver, and Robin Marie Korkki, 42, of Chicago, were found motionless in the bed of their villa last week by hotel staff at a resort on Seychelles’ main island. Autopsies conducted Wednesday determined the Minnesota natives died from acute pulmonary edema, or fluid in their lungs, according to a police report obtained by Minnesota television station KARE.

Cerebral edema, or fluid in the brain, was also cited in Annie Korkki’s death. The report said no visible signs of injuries were found. Police said the women were seen drinking and were helped to their room by hotel personnel the night before they were found dead. The investigation is ongoing and toxicology tests are pending.
