A reasonable person would know the abuse NS and SS heaped on little Ethan would cause his death. When they saw the damage to the child, they failed to seek medical assistance; in fact, they left a terribly injured child to suffer alone as they "ran out to get married and to party"... To make sure the child was NOT discovered injured, the doorknob was removed creating a tomb for the child to die in.

This is so grievous. My heart is heavy for this little boy unable to find help, comfort as he lay dieing in excruciating pain. For creatures as these, I hope God has no mercy.

FARMINGTON — A judge ruled Thursday that he had heard sufficient evidence to order Nathan Sloop to stand trial for capital murder in the death of his 4-year-old stepson, Ethan Stacy.

Second District Judge Glen Dawson's decision came almost four months after he heard the evidence against Sloop, 34, who faces aggravated murder and other charges in Ethan's death.

Dawson, however, declined to rule on the constitutionality of pursuing the death penalty at this point in the case.

Stephanie Sloop faces identical charges. A preliminary hearing in her case has not yet occurred, but she is scheduled for a status conference next week.

FARMINGTON — A woman charged with murder in connection with the death of her 4-year-old son will have a hearing on the evidence against her in December.

Second District Judge Glen Dawson said Tuesday that he wanted to see the case against Stephanie Sloop, 30, go to a preliminary hearing. State prosecutors agreed and defense attorney Mary Corporon requested that it take place in November or December to allow her time to prepare.

The judge set the hearing, spanning four days, to begin Dec. 10.

Prosecutors have said the child was scalded, beaten, overmedicated and not given the medical care that he needed. But Nathan Sloop's defense attorneys have countered that Ethan didn't die of severe abuse, but of dehydration from overmedication.

Stephanie Sloop has been charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony; inflicting a serious injury on a child and obstructing justice, second-degree felonies; and abuse or desecration of a human body, third-degree felony.

FARMINGTON — A 2014 trial date was set Tuesday for a man accused of murdering his young stepson.

Nathanael Warren Sloop, 34, also pleaded not guilty Tuesday to capital murder; as well as charges of obstructing justice and intentionally inflicting serious injury on a child, second-degree felonies; and desecration of a dead body, a third-degree felony, in the death of 4-year-old Ethan Stacy.

A two-week trial is now scheduled to begin March 17, 2014. Judge Glen Dawson also asked that attorneys keep April 2-4 available should Sloop be convicted and the case require a penalty phase to determine whether he will be sentenced to death.

Farmington •After more than three years of delays, Nathan Sloop, the man accused of contributing to his stepson’s death and disfiguring the boy’s body after filing a false missing child report, will have his day in court.

Sloop, 34, will be tried on March 17 of next year for the 2010 death of his 4-year-old stepson Ethan Stacy.

Stephanie Sloop's attorney files motion to delay another hearing

FARMINGTON -- The defense attorney for Stephanie Sloop filed a motion asking to continue a four-day preliminary hearing.

Mary Corporon filed the motion Nov. 7 in 2nd District Court.

A four-day preliminary hearing was set to run from Dec. 10 to Dec. 13.

She has requested the judge to set a status conference for Jan. 28.

Stephanie Sloop, 28, and her husband, Nathanael Warren Sloop, 32, are each charged with aggravated murder, second-degree felony child abuse, second-degree felony obstruction of justice and third-degree felony abuse or desecration of a body. The charges stem from the death of 4-year-old Ethan Stacy, Stephanie Sloop's son, on May 8, 2010. The murder charge carries a possible death sentence, for either Sloop convicted. Prosecutors have 60 days following a felony arraignment hearing to file their intent to seek the death penalty.

Nathan Sloop in court for allegedly trying to bite off jail officer’s thumb

According to a probable cause statement, Sloop assaulted the deputy on Nov. 21 just after 1 p.m. after refusing an order to return to his cell. Sloop is accused of punching the deputy in the face twice, then attempted to gouge out the deputy’s left eye with his thumb. A second deputy went to Sloop’s cell to assist, according to the probable cause, and tried to restrain Sloop. But Sloop continued to strike the first deputy in the head, and then lunged up and bit into the deputy’s thumb, according to the probable cause statement. "As the inmate was being restrained, [Sloop] said, ‘You f---er, I gouged your eyes,’ and ‘Davis, you fat f---, you are next, your turn is coming,’" according to the probable cause statement. Sloop "attempted to bite through the deputy’s thumb, causing a deep wound that required multi-layer sutures," according to charging documents. wrote:

Davis County prosecutors have filed their intent to seek the death penalty against Sloop, citing "Shelby’s Law," a 2007 amendment to Utah’s homicide statute that allows prosecutors to seek the death penalty without having to prove a killing was intentional when a child dies during an act of abuse, sexual assault or kidnapping. But Mauro has argued Shelby’s Law is unconstitutional. "He shouldn’t get the death penalty because he didn’t commit an intentional killing," Mauro told reporters after an August hearing. Sloop’s wife and Ethan’s mother, Stephanie Sloop, 30, faces essentially the same charges in her son’s death. A status hearing in her case is set for Jan. 28. wrote:

Farmington • Nearly four years after the body of Ethan Stacy was found buried on a mountainside in Weber County, the child’s stepfather — Nathan Sloop — admitted Tuesday that he played a role in the 4-year-old’s death.

Sloop, 35, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to aggravated murder for the 2010 death of Ethan Stacy.

"Guilty, your honor," Sloop told 2nd District Judge Glen Dawson.

Nathan Sloop pleads guilty to killing stepson

Nathan Sloop should get the death penalty for the horrendous abuse, murder and burial of little Ethan Stacy.

Too bad a plea deal was worked out.

Personally, I feel it is not justice for Ethan.

Also, I feel Ethan's mother should be tried and get the death penalty.

Just my opinion!

Stephanie Sloop case on hold while attorneys seek 'exculpatory' material

FARMINGTON — The case against a Layton woman accused of killing her 4-year-old son is on hold while attorneys determine how to handle "exculpatory" information in the case.

Stephanie Sloop, 31, is charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and other charges in the 2010 death of Ethan Stacy. On Tuesday, defense attorney Mary Corporon told a judge that prosecutors have information that could potentially exonerate her client.

Attorneys did not specify what kind of information they were talking about.

I agree with you. She and Nathan should both have gotten the death penalty in the horrific death of precious little Ethan.

To add their final touch of sprinkling dog food over the grave in hopes a wild animal might dig up the remains and scatter them? Yeah... That alone deserves some alternating current....

This case really bothers me.
This is so terribly wrong and sad for such a sweet little boy.
To die with torture and alone and afraid at the hands of adults pretending to love and care for you....

Nathan, Stephanie Sloop won't be eligible for parole until 2055

".....The couple connected to the death of a little boy from Southwest Virginia will be in their 70s before they are eligible for a parole hearing.

The Utah Department of Corrections confirms both Nathan and Stephanie Sloop will not see a parole judge until May 2055.

According to the department of corrections, the Sloops appeared before the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole earlier this week.

Many in the Tri-Cities community remember the little boy, 4-year-old Ethan Stacy, who went on a court-ordered visit to his mother, Stephanie, in Utah 5 years ago.

According to investigators, the boy endured severe abuse, before he was buried in a shallow grave....."
