GREAT BEND — It was silent, and tension showed on the faces of Alicia DeBolt’s family as they waited for jurors to walk back into the courtroom and give their verdict in Adam Longoria’s capital murder trial.

She was a 14-year-old girl who never got to start her freshman year of high school. In August 2010, she disappeared after getting into an SUV outside her Great Bend home, apparently thinking she was going to a party. Workers found her badly burned body, her face covered in duct tape, at a secluded asphalt plant where Longoria had worked. Day after day since last week, her family filled three rows reserved for them in the courtroom so they could hear the testimony.

They wanted justice. Friday afternoon, they got it.

After deliberating about 3 and a half hours, the jury found Longoria guilty of everything he had been charged with in Alicia’s death: capital murder and all three underlying sex crimes alleged: two forms of sodomy and attempted rape. They also found him guilty of breaking into and stealing his employer’s truck in what prosecutors said was his attempt to flee when investigators focused on him.

With the capital murder conviction, Longoria, 38, faces life in prison without parole. His sentencing will be June 8.

(GREAT BEND, Kan.)—

The man convicted of killing a Great Bend teenager won't be sentenced in June as planned. An order signed by Judge Hannelore Kitts continued the sentencing to a date that has yet to be determined.

I cannot find a reason for the delay I tried searching his name and all it came up with was the source you posted. Do you have any other links or info as to why the judge is delaying the sentence? TIA

WICHITA, Kan. — Nearly two years after the burned remains of a missing 14-year-old cheerleader were found at an asphalt plant, her killer will return to a Great Bend courtroom Tuesday to be sentenced in the murder case that rattled the western Kansas community.

The mother and sister of a 14-year-old cheerleader whose burned body was found at the Great Bend asphalt plant are expected to make victim impact statements Tuesday at the sentencing for the man convicted of killing her, prosecutors said.

The state did not seek the death penalty against 38-year-old Adam Longoria, but Barton County District Judge Hannelore Kitts has little leeway in deciding his punishment because jurors convicted him of capital murder for the August 2010 death of Alicia DeBolt. In Kansas, a capital murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of at least life without parole — even when the death penalty is already off the table.

ETA: I'm following along their blog. Adam is not yet in the courtroom. Judge has not turned on audio/video as yet.

Judge and attorneys are discussing legal motions prior to sentencing.

Adam Longoria has waived his right to appear at sentencing.

Alicia's mother is now giving her Victim Impact statement. Says Adam is still a coward for not showing up today and face her.

She gave a very moving talk. Sister Dawn prepared a written statement provided to the Court as evidence, but will not read it out loud.

Prosecutors are speaking now. Saying they objected to Adam not appearing today. He is a coward, and he manipulated and killed a little girl. Moving, as well. Asking for LWOP.

Adam received LWOP.

Done. Judge sentenced him to LWOP, as well as 2 other consecutive sentences related to the burglary and stolen vehicle (?). He has filed an appeal.

Now will be remanded to Kansas State Prison asap.

If you will recall, during the trial, no TV station archived the trial.

TOPEKA, Kansas – The Kansas Supreme Court affirmed Adam Longoria’s Barton County convictions of capital murder, vehicle burglary, and theft. The decision was written by Justice Marla Lucket.

In 2012, a Barton County jury convicted Longoria of the murder of Alicia Debolt.

On Aug. 21, 2010, Debolt went missing and was found dead days later. Investigators discovered the burnt remains of her body at an asphalt plant where Longoria worked. Alicia was last seen leaving her home in Great Bend for a party just before midnight on Aug. 21. Text messages prosecutors showed jurors showed that the then 38-year-old Longoria picked Alicia up that night.

Longoria was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

He argued his convictions should be reversed for a number of reasons, each of which the court found without merit. Read more in the 61-page ruling.
