Update 10:45 a.m. Monday
The search for Jorelys Rivera, the 7-year-old Canton girl who may have been abducted Friday evening, has expanded, Canton Police Lt. Jeff Hall said during a press conference this morning.

Joining the Canton Police and the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office are the Georgia State Patrol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other state resources.

"They're here for support," Hall said. "They'll give you ideas. Anybody that can give us ideas, we're listening to them. The feds and the GBI are great resources. They are trained in this type of investigation. The more minds we put in something, the better off we'll be."

Body of missing Canton girl found in dumpster

CANTON, Ga. -- The body of a 7-year-old girl who had been missing since Friday was found Monday afternoon in a dumpster from her apartment complex.

GBI Director Vernon Keenan said it appears Jorelys Rivera was severely beaten and sexually assaulted.

"This is going to be a very horrendous crime," Keenan said shortly after 2 p.m. Monday. "I'm convinced of that after observing the body."

Keenan said the dumpster where the girl's body was found was heavily compacted and had not been searched before. Early Monday afternoon, police moved the dumpster from the River Ridge Apartments to a field off Reinhardt College Parkway, so they could sift through its contents.

I totally agree with you Pi. The guy who killed my daughter only served 8 years for her death, but 2 years after getting out, he was sent back to prison for selling drugs and weapons and served 12-1/2 years.

The scene of the murder may have been an unlocked apartment at the River Ridge apartment complex where Jorelys lived.

Investigators believe Jorelys was abducted near the River Ridge playground, taken to a vacant apartment within the complex, assaulted and murdered, and then tossed in the dumpster.

"We have found evidence in [the vacant apartment] we believe is blood," said Keenan. "We are awaiting results of the investigation. The lab worked all night long."

CANTON, Ga. -- A 20-year-old Canton man has been charged with the murder of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera.

GBI Director Vernon Keenan said Ryan Brunn was a maintenance worker at the River Ridge Apartment complex, where Jorelys lived.

A day earlier, Keenan said investigators felt "very strongly" that Jorelys' killer either lives in her apartment complex or had ready access to it.

Neighbors told 11Alive's Duffie Dixon that Brunn had only recently been hired.

CANTON, Ga. -- The man charged with killing 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera appeared in court for the first time at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Ryan Brunn, who lived and worked at the apartment complex, made his first appearance in Cherokee County Superior Court in an orange jumpsuit and bulletproof vest. He answered the judge's questions quietly and appeared nervous as he surveyed the crowded courtroom.

The 20-year-old suspect kept turning around to look at the crowd behind him as the judge read him his rights and reviewed the charges against him, 11Alive's Blayne Alexander reported from the courtroom.

Brunn's family says he is innocent. His attorney, Daran Burns, said his client is "very shaken."

Jorelys Rivera murder suspect Ryan Brunn remains in isolation in the Cherokee County jail after his attorneys did not ask for bond during his first court appearance today.

Court-appointed lawyers Daran Burns and David Cannon told Superior Court Judge Frank Mills they did not have enough time to review the case and prepare a bond motion after getting Brunn as a client at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Canton, Georgia (CNN) -- New details emerged Thursday in the brutal slaying of a 7-year-old Georgia girl, hours after an attorney for the suspect said his client would plead not guilty.

Seven-year-old Jorelys Rivera's mouth was duct-taped, and her hands and feet were bound with plastic ties, a source close to the investigation said.

Authorities have charged 20-year-old maintenance worker Ryan Brunn with killing Jorelys, who was last seen alive Friday near a playground at the apartment complex where he worked in Canton, Georgia. They found her mangled body in a trash compactor there three days later, the source said.

A court date for an arraignment has not been set. David Cannon Sr., one of Brunn's court-appointed attorneys, said his client will enter a "not guilty plea" at the appropriate time.

He lacks conscience and receives great joy from inflicting pain and suffering upon others. Such great joy, in fact, that his most recent bloodlust was only satisfied after he had kidnapped, bludgeoned, raped, stabbed and murdered seven-year-old Jorelys Rivera. I just don't get what makes a 20 yr old, turn into a horrible monster? He's 20 yrs old for goodness sakes! Don't get me wrong, I don't feel sorry for him per say...I just wish we could get into his head and find out WHY? WHY a 7 yr old? Why kill her? It's just sickening and so horribly sad.

CANTON, Ga. -- Hundreds of people -- friends, family and strangers alike -- turned out Friday night to say farewell to 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera and to offer comfort to her family.

The family held a visitation for Jorelys Friday evening, even as the throngs of mourners gathered for the outdoor vigil. The assembled included many entire families, with children of their own. They held candles and quietly listened as prayers and songs were offered amid the grief-stricken tears of Jorelys' mother Joselin Rivera.

"Why, why," Joselin sobbed as she went to the funeral home. "She was so innocent. Why did he take her like this?"

There was a huge crowd that turned out for the vigil to honor Jorelys and support her family. It is heartbreaking to see Jorelys mother. My heart goes out to the family of Jorelys Rivera.

The reporter said he even cried.

There are other videos you can click on. One of them is about 20 minutes and is interesting considering that we now know the maintenance man is charged with Jorelys' murder.

It was only in the throes of this massive perversion that he was able to achieve the sexual release that was the goal of his attack...

So, it is the memory of little Jorelys that will sustain him for the next several decades. He will sit in his cell and relive his greatest triumph...

Chopping it off while he's waiting on death row would be a pretty good punishment. He wouldn't get any physical release then.

A vigil and lingering questions

In the 60 hours after they were called to search for Jorelys Rivera, Canton police did not find the blood-smeared apartment where she died, even though it was less than 100 yards from where she was last seen. At one point during that time, police suspended their search overnight, official investigative logs show.

The Canton police chief also declined to call in the state’s Child Abduction Response Team, which pulls from nine state law enforcement agencies with different specialties. Once the team was called — by the Cherokee County sheriff rather than the Canton police — it took just four hours to locate the crime scene and another two hours to find Jorelys’ body in a nearby trash compactor .

CANTON — A steady stream of roughly 100 people poured out of Darby Funeral Home Friday night following Jorelys Rivera’s viewing.

Local residents and many from outside Canton came to pay their respects for the 7-year-old who police say was killed last Friday and found in a metal trash bin on Monday. Ryan Brunn, 20, a maintenance worker at the apartment complex where Jorelys lived and was reportedly killed, was arrested and charged with murder Wednesday afternoon. His first appearance hearing was Thursday.

Outside of the funeral home around 5 p.m., friends of Jorelys and others touched by her story hugged and hung their heads.

Joseline Rivera lifted her face to the sun. Richardi Galarza shielded his eyes behind dark glasses. The two grieving parents each tossed a snow white dove into a cloudless Canton sky Saturday, an act symbolizing their 7-year-old daughter’s flight to heaven.
Jorelys Rivera, according to police, was raped, beaten and stabbed to death a week ago. Now she is in “the arms of Jesus,” Pastor Salvidor Gonzelaz said to the roughly 200 mourners who attended Jorelys' funeral. She was killed in a vacant apartment in the River Ridge Apartments in Canton where she lived with her mother and two sisters.

“Right now she’s happy. She’s in a better place,” Gonzelaz said at a bi-lingual service.

The heavens seemed to weep Monday as they continued searching for the little 7-year-old girl, who was missing for almost three days after leaving the playground at her apartment complex in Canton, where she routinely played.

The gray skies and drizzling rain mirrored the mood of the community, and it was as though everyone held their breaths collectively in hope she would be found safe and sound somewhere.

Faces in schools and businesses reflected the somber timbre of the circumstances, and heads were bowed in silent prayers that Jorelys Rivera would be found unharmed.

Her smiling, innocent face beamed out from newscasts and missing flyers posted around town; the reports told of a sweet, outgoing little girl full of life who seemed to love everyone.

CANTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - It was an emotional day at First Baptist Church Canton as family and friends said their final goodbyes to Joreyls Rivera.

"She was so playful and full of love," said Veronica Best, a family of the Rivera family. "It was really touching and beautiful everyone was just full of support and love for her."

My heart breaks for Jorelys' mother. I pray that God will give her the strength to stay strong and to help her through the loss of Jorelys.

A service was held Saturday in Canton, Georgia, for Jorelys Rivera, 7. She will be buried Tuesday in Puerto Rico.


San Juan, Puerto Rico (CNN) -- The father of a 7-year-old girl abducted and killed near her north Georgia home this month said Sunday he is "relieved" to have his daughter back in Puerto Rico, where she will be buried this week.

A funeral for Jorelys Rivera will be held Monday in Penuelas, her father, Ricardo Galarza, said. The burial will take place Tuesday, he said.

CANTON, Ga. -- Rumors were flying Tuesday at the apartment complex where 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera was murdered. There's talk now of a second suspect and some residents are so much on edge they're talking about moving out.

But GBI investigators say 'no'. They have their man. What they are not saying is much about the evidence found to put the current suspect, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn, behind bars.

Hundreds turned out for the Puerto Rico funeral of a 7-year-old Georgia girl who was killed earlier this month.

Jorelys Rivera was buried in a white dress and white flowers adorning her hair. Her casket was filled with some of her favorite toys.

A seven-year-old girl who was abducted and murdered in Georgia was buried on Tuesday in a white dress with flowers in her hair.

The body of Jorelys Galarza Rivera was surrounded by some of her favorite toys and what seemed like most of the population of the southern Puerto Rican town where she was born was present.

Hundreds of people filled Penuelas' streets walking behind a horse-drawn carriage adorned with pink and white balloons that carried Jorelys to the cemetery.
