Border Cuts A 'Direct Attack' On National Security, Union Warns

OTTAWA — Canadians can expect more child pornography, weapons, drugs and terrorists to enter the country, not to mention longer waits at border crossings, thanks to job cuts totalling more than 1,350, union officials warned Thursday.

Customs and Immigration Union president Jean-Pierre Fortin arrived on Parliament Hill with stark news: 1,026 Canada Border Services Agency jobs would be slashed across the country over the next three years, including about 100 intelligence officer positions.

"These proposed budget cuts will have a direct and real impact on Canadians in our communities across the country," he said noting the $7.6 million cut to the CBSA's intelligence service is particularly concerning given that represents about half the unit.
