Woman's body discovered at park

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. (WSVN) -- Police are investigating the discovery of a female body at a South Florida park.

According to police, two hikers were walking through a trail at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek Thursday afternoon, when they discovered the decomposing body.

The hikers then called police. Coconut Creek Police, along with Coral Springs Police, responded to the scene and identified what they have called a badly decomposed body of a female. "We got a call from two hikers that were in the woods. They found a badly decomposed body of a person, and we responded back there, and that's what we have," said Coconut Creek Police Chief Michael Mann.

COCONUT CREEK (CBS4) – The Broward County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Friday afternoon that a decomposing body discovered by hikers at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek is that of Maria Claudia Murphy, A Coral Springs woman who disappeared in March.

The body was found by hikers at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek. The body was decomposing when it was discovered and was discovered in a heavily wooded area full of mangroves and nature trails. Investigators said the body has likely been in the woods for several months.

Authorities on Friday identified skeletal parts found this week at a remote Coconut Creek nature trail as those of a Coral Springs woman who vanished nearly four months ago.

Maria Claudia Murphy, 45, disappeared on March 16. Her last known location that afternoon was a Coconut Creek street corner less than two miles southwest of where the skeletal parts were found Thursday.

The Broward Medical Examiner's Office used dental records to confirm Murphy's identity, according to Coral Springs police spokesman Lt. Joe McHugh. Murphy's relatives were notified of her death, he said.

"We're disappointed that she was found deceased," McHugh said. "Ultimately, we always held out hope that she would be found in good health."

CORAL SPRINGS, Florida (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) -- Maria Claudia Murphy, 45, went missing shortly after visiting a bank on University Drive in Coral Springs around 1 p.m. Friday; police and her husband, Frank Murphy, are asking the public for help in finding her.

Coral Springs Police spokesman Sgt. David Kirkland said police consider Maria an “endangered person” because “there’s nothing that would explain why she would be missing.”

Frank Murphy said on Friday morning he kissed his wife of nine years goodbye and when he returned home from work that afternoon, she was gone.

Margate, FL (WCVN/CNN) - Police have found a critical clue in the disappearance of a south Florida woman.

Her family hopes it helps crack the case.

The woman's car was found in a parking lot at a restaurant, and now, there's surveillance video that shows her on the day she vanished.

"It doesn't make sense is all I can say, just disappears, it doesn't make sense. So we're not sure. We know that she walked away, we now know she has a pocket book. It's the same style as this but it's black," said Ed Murphy, Maria Claudia Murphy's brother-in law.

CBS Miami reports that Maria Murphy's black BMW was found in a parking lot Tuesday night and towed to police headquarters for processing. Police told CBS Miami that this is the first major break in the disappearance of the 45-year-old woman. They also said they believe Murphy may be in danger.

CORAL SPRINGS — She vanished just as her plan of moving from South Florida to Tennessee was taking shape.

Maria Claudia Murphy, 45, told friends she was excited about relocating next month to Nashville, where her husband, a project manager for a commercial kitchen contractor, accepted an opening from his employer

Murphy's husband, Frank Murphy, on Wednesday called the vehicle's recovery "a great lead."

"That's what we were asking for," her husband said. "It's moving forward to try and find her. Somebody knows where she is. Somebody must have seen her walking in that area."

Authorities call Maria Murphy's disappearance unusual: There's no apparent explanation for it, and clues suggest something is amiss.

Although she took a wallet or purse with her Friday, her credit cards haven't been used, police spokesman Lt. Joe McHugh said. "In order for [missing] people to survive, they have to fend for themselves," McHugh said.

Her passport, cellphone and two dogs were found at her home, he said. Friends told police that Murphy, an animal lover, "went everywhere" with at least one of the pets, McHugh said.

CORAL SPRINGS (CBSMiami) – Coral Springs Police say missing woman, Maria Claudia Murphy, left her identification and credit cards inside her car before she vanished Friday afternoon.

The revelation comes as police released new surveillance video of Murphy. She is seen parking her car — a 2005 black BMW 330 CI — behind a Colombian restaurant in the 7900 block of Sample Road Tuesday night in Margate.

The video shows Murphy calmly exiting the car and walking east. Surveillance cameras capture her walking through a gas station. A camera on a Broward County bus shows her walking eastbound along Sample Road, wearing blue jeans and carrying a bag on a hot day.

Coral Springs Police have been using cadaver dogs to search for a woman who went missing last month, officials said Friday.

The dogs searched Wednesday and Thursday in the area of Lyons and Copans Road, as authorities continue their search for 45-year-old Maria Claudia Murphy, Coral Springs Police spokesman Lt. Joe McHugh said.

McHugh said the dogs searched in a large open field and didn't detect anything.

New video of Claudia Murphy of Coral Springs, who has been missing since Friday, shows her parking her car in a shopping center and then walking away. A nearby gas station caught her walking eastbound on Sample Road, and a Broward bus camera also caught her heading that direction. Police spokesman Lt. One mystery was solved Friday when a fully clothed skeleton recovered from a thickly wooded area was identified as a Coral Springs woman who vanished nearly four months ago under strange circumstances.

But questions remain in the story of Maria Claudia Murphy, 45, who disappeared just as she planned to move to Tennessee with her husband.

On a Friday afternoon in March, she parked her car outside a restaurant near Coral Springs and inexplicably began walking east across Broward County in the midday sun. Nearly two hours later and about four miles away in Coconut Creek, she was spotted standing on a street corner. That was the last time she was seen.

Why did she leave her car behind? Was she meeting someone?.......

"Murphy has no significant medical history, officials said. She had been sick with a stomach virus for weeks in March, but was recovering after taking antibiotics, her husband said.

The mystery began March 16, when Murphy traveled from her home to a Coral Springs bank to deposit money. She left her dogs at home, even though she usually went everywhere with them, relatives said."

“Dental records,” said Coral Springs Police Lt. Joe McHugh. “That’s how we confirmed that it was her. There were also items found on or near her body that lead us to believe originally that this was Maria Claudia Murphy.”

“It’s not known how she died,” McHugh told CBS4′s Peter D’Oench. “As of now we don’t know. An autopsy should determine that.”

The Broward Medical Examiner’s Office said results of most autopsies are not released for three to four weeks. McHugh said Coconut Creek Police were taking over the investigation since Murphy’s body was discovered in their city.

“That’s why I can’t say what items were found on or near her as it is their case now,” said McHugh.

Thursday, two hikers found the skeleton along a remote nature trail deep inside Tradewinds Park South in Coconut Creek.

Murphy's remains were deep in the woods, out of sight from the disc golfers, bicyclists and picnickers who frequent the sprawling park, Murphy's sister said. The hikers reached the area only because they were involved in athletic training, she said.

"Nobody would have found her there," Valderrama said. "They found her personal belongings around her. Indubitably, she was there this whole time."

" As police investigated her vanished, they collected several surveillance videos. One shows Murray leaving her black 2005 BMW two-door convertible in a parking lot the same afternoon.

The BMW was parked outside El Balcon De Las Americas, a Colombian restaurant she frequented in the 7900 block of West Sample Road, near Coral Springs. Instead of going into El Balcon De Las Americas, Murphy got out and walked across the parking lot.

Another video shows Murphy walking past pumps at a Mobil gas station and out onto Sample Road.

A third video was recorded by a passing Broward County Transit bus. It shows Murray walking eastbound on Sample Road with a black bag slung over her left shoulder.

Murphy was possibly seen that afternoon by a friend walking across U.S. 441 at Copans Road in Margate approximately three miles away. She appeared red-faced and sweaty in the midday sun, police said.

Another video, also taken by a passing bus, showed Murphy standing on the northeast corner of Copans Road and Lyons Road in Coconut Creek."

"As I look at the route and watch the video I became curious as to where she was going. So, I watched the video and then traced the steps on Google map.

First, it seems to me that Maria knows exactly where she is going. In fact, I believe she has parked her car there before and has walked this route before. But, where is she headed? It doesn't seem to be a random route."

I remember this case from THM discussions. I had an awful sense then that there would be no happy ending. I'm glad they found her. The whole situation was so odd and "hinky". I'll wait to hear what they found with her.

I notice that there has been an avoidance of either of the words "homicide" or "suicide" in the emerging reports.

I agree, I think this case is very "hinky". I also think that wasn't the first time that Maria Claudia parked her car behind the Colombian restaurant and left it there while she (possibly) went to Treadwinds Park by bus.

Her family said Claudia who was born in Colombia was looking forward to the move because the couple has a cabin nearby in Blue Ridge, Georgia and she loved the outdoors. What they fear is that Claudia may be wandering and disoriented because she had been suffering the lingering effects of food poisoning and was taking medication.

Freckles, I read comments that were made on some Coral Springs, FL, online papers by people who allegedly knew her, someone wrote that she was an animal lover, that her and her husband were hobby breeders of exotics pets, Lizards, among them, and that it was not unusual for her to park her car behind the Colombian restaurant while she went by bus to Butterfly World, which is inside Tradewinds Park South; near the area where her skeletal remains were found.

I read on an article that her husband told the police that a man had called them to buy some Lizards but he never showed up, I don't know how this could be related to her disappearance. I only know that this case is very puzzling.

— Before the tragedy that befell Maria Claudia Murphy, she prepared to move with her husband by boxing their belongings.

Those cardboard boxes remained stacked high in a garage Monday and slowly are being unpacked by her husband. The boxes never were taken to Tennessee, where the Coral Springs couple had planned to relocate.

Frank Murphy, who says he won't move now that his wife has died, was mourning her Monday.

"I'm finally having closure to grieve for her," he said. "We know she's gone and that she's with God. We're just looking forward to putting her finally to rest, to remember all the good times that we had with Claudia."

Husband: Discovery of Coral Springs woman's remains brings 'closure'

Excerpts:

Forensic experts in Fort Myers have been commissioned to help determine the cause of death, Frank Murphy said. Determining how she died may take weeks or months, according to the Coconut Creek Police Department, which also is investigating.

Several questions remain about Murphy's actions before she vanished, including why she left her car behind and whether she was meeting someone. Frank Murphy said: "We don't have an exact answer as to how she died."

" As police investigated her vanished, they collected several surveillance videos. One shows Murray leaving her black 2005 BMW two-door convertible in a parking lot the same afternoon.

The BMW was parked outside El Balcon De Las Americas, a Colombian restaurant she frequented in the 7900 block of West Sample Road, near Coral Springs. Instead of going into El Balcon De Las Americas, Murphy got out and walked across the parking lot.

Another video shows Murphy walking past pumps at a Mobil gas station and out onto Sample Road.

A third video was recorded by a passing Broward County Transit bus. It shows Murray walking eastbound on Sample Road with a black bag slung over her left shoulder.

Murphy was possibly seen that afternoon by a friend walking across U.S. 441 at Copans Road in Margate approximately three miles away. She appeared red-faced and sweaty in the midday sun, police said.

Another video, also taken by a passing bus, showed Murphy standing on the northeast corner of Copans Road and Lyons Road in Coconut Creek."

Murphy, Maria Claudia, went to the Lord on July 5, 2012. She was born on September 7, 1966 in Bogota, Colombia; daughter of Dr. Mario and Martha Bastian Valderrama, both deceased. She leaves behind her loving husband Francis (Frank) Murphy of 9 years and devoted son Diego Perez. She was predeceased by her brother Saul Valderrama and survived by Siblings; Mario Gomez (Martha), Mario Valderrama, Marta Valderrama and Miguel Valderrama (Maria Eugenia) and Saul's wife Sandra. Claudia majored in Engineering at Universidad de America, an enthusiasm that would continue throughout her life. She came to the United States; to her mother's native New Jersey when she was 18 years old with her husband Luis Alejandro Tellez, with whom she had her son Diego.........

Funeral scheduled for Coral Springs resident Maria Claudia Murphy

Funeral arrangements have been scheduled for Maria Claudia Murphy, the Coral Springs woman who this year mysteriously vanished and died.

Murphy's funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church at 200 N. University Drive in Plantation. Her ashes later will be scattered on Laguna de Guatavita, in her homeland of Colombia.

Autopsy Results Inconclusive In Coral Springs Woman’s Death

MIAMI (CBS4) – The family of a Coral Springs woman whose body was found at a Coconut Creek park in July may never know how Maria Claudia Murphy died.

The Broward County Medical Examiner released the autopsy report Friday in which it listed the official cause of death as “undetermined”.

“The severity of the decomposition process precludes definitive determination of cause of death to a reasonable degree of medical certainty,” Broward County Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Darin P. Trelka wrote in the report.

Murphy’s husband Frank told CBS 4 News he knew there was a good chance the results would be inconclusive.

Frank Murphy said he just recently returned from Colombia, where he spread his wife’s ashes over a lake where she spent time growing up.

I guess I am a natural skeptic, and would like to know if her stomach problems and disorientation were caused by some type of poisining over a many week period.
I don't know if any type of poison could be decteded after the body was discovered after a few month period.
I would check very thoroughly her and her husbands real relationship.
I mean really dig deep.
I am not accusing anyone but it really sounds hinky to me, especislly after the husband did not move to Tennesee.
Call me crazy but we all know from our crime blog reading that there is usually more to any missing person story than meets the eye.

There are lots of diseases that lizards and exotic reptiles carry that are able to be passed on to humans which could leave someone disorientated.
one of which is Salmonellosis an infection with bacteria called Salmonella. Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
I realize that she had been treated with Antibiotics but may not have been long enough.

All of that said I do find it very strange that she parked so far away if her intent was to go to the butterfly park. I do not find it odd that the husband did not take the transfer at this time as I would be pleading with my company to stay while my spouse was "missing" if indeed I loved them. I didn't like the comment attributed to the husband (quoted from posting by by Alessandra_Deux on Sat Aug 25, 2012 12:52 am) " Murphy’s husband Frank told CBS 4 News he knew there was a good chance the results would be inconclusive." Although, that could be that he is intelligent and a realist.

It would have be great if they had found a cause of death and that because they do not have enough evidence are waiting to see if there is movement by their POI.

Despite the discovery of a Coral Springs woman's skeleton nearly four months after she vanished, the cause of her death remains a mystery.

..."We have no answers," said Valderrama, 55. "We don't know anything, and we are not going to know anything."

Likewise, police investigators have no grounds on which to close their case.

"It will remain open. It will always remain open," Sgt. Kathryn Markland, a spokeswoman for the Coconut Creek Police Department, said.
