SAN ANTONIO — The family of a woman who went missing from Garden Ridge on Friday is adamant she did not disappear voluntarily, despite what the community's police chief suggested this weekend.

Friends and family have not heard from Leanne Hecht Bearden, 33, since she told her husband, Josh Bearden, that she was going for a walk.

“What we're all thinking is that she just went on a walk to clear her head, to think about things, but it does seem out of character for her to run off because she just doesn't want to disappoint anybody,” Rebekah Sculley, the missing woman's sister-in-law, said Monday. “She's just a family pleaser. She wouldn't want to cause anybody trouble.”

Sculley said her brother and sister-in-law lived in Colorado before taking a two-year trip around the world. The pair recently returned and have been staying in Garden Ridge since Dec. 23, she said. That's where Josh Bearden's parents reside.

Missing: Leanne Hecht Bearden went for a walk in Texas and never returned

Police and family members are desperately searching for a 33-year-old woman recently returned from a two-year, around-the-world trip who disappeared during a visit to relatives in Texas.

Leanne Hecht Bearden and her husband Joshua Bearden, 39, traveled the world for 22 months without a mishap but after returning to the U.S. Leanne Bearden has gone missing.

The couple was staying with Joshua Bearden's parents near San Antonio last week after returning from their trip abroad when she went out for a walk and never returned.

Bearden, a marketing graduate, left the house in Garden Ridge on January 17 wearing jeans and hiking boots and carrying about $60 in cash and some credit cards.

GARDEN RIDGE — At the end of an “exhaustive search” Saturday, officials came up empty handed, announcing they found no evidence a crime had been committed in the area surrounding the home of a missing local woman.

A massive search and rescue effort was launched here Saturday morning, as local law enforcement officials enlisted help from agencies across the state to find Leanne Hecht Bearden, who went for a walk eight days ago and never returned.

More than 100 volunteers from Texas Search and Rescue and the Texas State Guard Maritime Regiment joined the massive search, as have roughly four dozen law enforcement officials from Comal County, the Department of Public Safety, the Texas Rangers and the FBI, among other agencies.

Woman travels world without mishap, goes missing after walk in Texas

(CNN) -- She traveled the world with her husband for 22 months without major mishap, but a month after returning to the United States, Leanne Hecht Bearden is missing after she went for a walk.

A search is under way in Texas, northeast of San Antonio, for the Denver woman who took a stroll almost a week ago and has not returned to her in-laws' residence where she and husband, Josh, were staying.

"While we are very concerned for Ms. Bearden's welfare, there is no indication at this time that this is criminal in nature," the Garden Ridge Police Department said in a statement.

Bearden, 33, went missing Friday in the early afternoon, and police are encouraging the public to provide any information.

While family and friends and say "police are engaged" in this case and are being "diligent in their efforts," they have decided to take the search into their own hands and have hired private helicopters to help look for Bearden.

SAN ANTONIO — Following a massive but unsuccessful search Saturday for Leanne Hecht Bearden, who went missing in Garden Ridge on Jan. 17, Bearden's family said they were left disappointed but remain hopeful that Bearden is alive.

“We have not given up hope of finding Leanne,” the family said in a statement late Saturday night. “Today's search only shows us that we must continue our efforts and expand our possibilities of where she may be found.”

Their efforts will now be a private endeavor. After more than 100 volunteers and about 50 law enforcement officials scoured a 23-square-mile area Saturday, officials said they had found no evidence of a crime and were ending their search efforts.

Private investigator now on missing woman case

The family of a Colorado woman who went missing from a Garden Ridge home Jan. 17 has hired a private investigator to supplement police efforts to find her.

“He's going to start taking a closer look, and perhaps look into different areas,” Will Bearden, the missing woman's father-in-law, said Monday of investigator Charlie Parker.

Several searches have failed to raise any trace of Leanne Hecht Bearden, 33, who reportedly vanished after leaving for a walk from her in-laws' Sumac Lane home, where she and husband Josh Bearden were staying.

Parker said his first step is to learn everything he can about Leanne Bearden, who'd recently completed an around-the-world trip with her husband and was preparing to return home to Denver.

SAN ANTONIO — A private investigator working with police to locate a Colorado woman missing from Garden Ridge said reports that the woman was seen in Houston are false.

“We know it's not her,” said Charlie Parker, a private investigator who's working with Garden Ridge police to locate Leanne Hecht Bearden, who vanished from her in-law's home Jan. 17 after leaving for an afternoon walk.

He said the family learned Tuesday afternoon that four potential sightings of Bearden, 33, were logged with police at the University of Texas medical school in Houston this week.

Parker said early Wednesday that he planned to travel there to interview those making the reports, but called back soon after to cancel those plans

SAN ANTONIO — After two weeks of fruitless searching for Leanne Hecht Bearden, her family says evidence suggests “a strong possibility” that she voluntarily vanished Jan. 17 from the Garden Ridge home of her in-laws. .

That conclusion is based on accounts that Bearden, 33, was troubled before leaving the residence and on two reported sightings of her walking along F.M. 3009 toward Interstate 35 soon afterward.

“While those two witnesses are very credible, we are still exploring other possibilities,” Will Bearden, her father-in-law, said Thursday. “It's a hopeful sign. It's also a fearful sign.”

Leanne lived in Denver prior to taking off on a round-the-world trip with her husband, Joshua. Their wide-ranging jaunt lasted two years -- and they were days away from returning to the Mile High City when she went for a walk and hasn't been seen since.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — As the search for a woman who disappeared in Comal County two weeks ago continues, her story is now gaining national attention.

Leanne Bearden, 33, went for a walk on Jan. 17 while visiting her in-laws in Garden Ridge, and never came back.

On Wednesday, the family brought their search 60 miles north to Austin, handing out flyers and looking for answers.

The family says they aren’t ruling out any possibilities and are unsure whether she was kidnapped, or left on her own. However, they say the received several tips from people saying they spotted Bearden in Austin.

SAN ANTONIO — Leanne Bearden's family didn't tell officials that the couple used a worldwide “couch surfing” network frequently before she disappeared in January because they didn't think it would yield results, they said. But investigators, who expanded their search to Austin on Thursday, said it might.

The missing 33-year-old woman and her husband, Josh, traveled the world for two years before she went missing from his parents' Garden Ridge home on Jan. 17. They were couch surfers, her husband said Thursday, and used a global web-based social network of people who offer their homes as free places to stay. There are more than 3,000 registered members in San Antonio.

The family of a 33-year-old woman who finished a trip around the world only to disappear while visiting relatives in Texas is offering reward money for information in the case.

Leanne Hecht Bearden's husband, Josh Bearden, told The Huffington Post that $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to his wife's exact location. An additional $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to her safe return.

"We feel that we are reliant on someone else who knows something to give us information," Bearden said. "We are hoping [the offer of] a financial reward will encourage that person or people to share that information."

In the days leading up to her disappearance, Leanne Hecht Bearden said she was tired of traveling after her trip around the world and was anxious to return home.

"She said, 'I want to come home to my family with lots of hugs and kisses,'" Bearden's sister, Joy Hecht Colombo, told The Huffington Post.

So when Leanne Bearden disappeared while walking near her in-laws house on Jan. 17, some people -- including at least one family member -- speculated she might have voluntarily vanished. Perhaps, they thought, the pressure of transitioning from a two-year trip back into a "normal" life had prompted her to take off.

Not so, say her brother and sister.

"She would never leave of her own free will. That is not her at all," Leanne Bearden's brother, Doug Hecht, told HuffPost.

"She's very responsible," Colombo added. "She loves her family and she would never put us through this."

Garden Ridge police Chief Donna O'Conner said a body found in the backyard of a Garden Ridge home Thursday afternoon is believed to be that of a woman missing since January.

Leanne Bearden, 33, was last seen on Jan. 17 in Garden Ridge when she went for a walk and never returned.

The home where her body was found is located in the 21000 block of Fairview Circle, about two blocks from where she was last seen.

A source in Comal County confirmed to KSAT's Steve Spriester late Thursday afternoon that her death was an apparent suicide.

(CNN) -- Authorities closed the case Friday on Leanne Hecht Bearden, the once intrepid world traveler who was found dead a day earlier, after having apparently killed herself, according to police.

According to Garden Ridge, Texas, Police Chief Donna O'Conner, "Preliminary autopsy results indicate asphyxiation by hanging."

GARDEN RIDGE — Preliminary results of an autopsy on Leanne Bearden's remains indicate the Colorado woman who went missing nearly a month ago committed suicide and her death was caused by asphyxiation, police said Friday.

Garden Ridge Police Chief Donna O'Conner released a statement saying the initial findings indicate Bearden hanged herself, and that the police investigation was now closed.

Ann, thank you so much for updating this thread. I'm terribly sorry about Leanne Hecht Bearden tragic ending. It was not the outcome that I was hoping for.

I'm still baffled about the rather puzzling circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
