Anthony GeorgeA North Side man who told police that his girlfriend's 2-year-old triplets fell down the stairs has been charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. One of the girls, Kaiyah Beck, died yesterday of her injuries, the medical examiner's office said.
Anthony George, 20, was charged yesterday after being taken into custody by the Allegheny County fugitive task force on an outstanding bench warrant in connection with a domestic abuse incident in March.
City police said Mr. George was babysitting his girlfriend's triplets -- Kaiyah, Taliea and Briyanna Beck -- at their home on Richardson Street in Brighton Heights Sunday evening while their mother, Jennifer Yali, 25, went to play bingo with a friend.
Detective Dale Canofari said the first call for medical assistance was made at 8:14 p.m. by Constance Johnson, a neighbor of Ms. Yali's. Ms. Johnson had received a call from Ms. Yali asking her to check on the children.
Paramedics arriving at the apartment found the three toddlers injured, one of them critically, and contacted police.
Mr. George told police that he had been going up a flight of stairs in the apartment when he turned to see the three children following him up the stairs. When he shouted at them to "Go downstairs!," he said, the startled children jumped, pushed each other, and tumbled down the stairs.
All three children were taken to Children's Hospital, where Kaiyah was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. The other girls were treated for minor bruises and cuts and were released.
Detective Canofari said a doctor at Children's Hospital told him Kaiyah suffered a traumatic brain injury, consistent with abusive head trauma. The injury was not consistent with a fall down the stairs, the doctor said.
There were no signs of major trauma to her head externally and the abrasions on her body were very minor.
Mr. George was in Allegheny County Jail on $250,000 bond last night. It was unknown whether he will face additional charges since the girl's death. Police spokeswoman Diane Richard could not be reached for comment.
While investigating the incident, police became aware of the bench warrant for Mr. George and arrested him at around 3 a.m. Tuesday in Beltzhoover. Detective Canofari said Mr. George had been free on $30,000 bond while awaiting trial on charges of simple assault, trespassing, robbery of a motor vehicle, unauthorized use of the vehicle and unlawful restraint causing serious bodily injury, but he had failed to appear for his court date.
Court records show Mr. George and an ex-girlfriend, Jessica Dodson, met to exchange personal belongings March 14 outside his Dickson Street apartment. Ms. Dodson was sitting in her car when the two began to argue. According to the affidavit, Mr. George opened the car door and dragged her by the hair from the vehicle. Ms. Dodson told police he punched her, threw her to the ground and kicked her before he dragged her back inside the car.
He drove to her home on Voskamp Street where he went inside and began beating on a man there, the affidavit said.

Re: ONE OF THREE TRIPLET GIRLS DIED 12/3 MOM'S BOYFRIEND CLAIMS FELL DOWN STAIRS
People really need to be careful who they leave their kids with. I suspect that the mother was aware of his temper. It seems all too often that a boyfriend injures or kills a child while watching them.
