OTTAWA—With lightning speed, MPs have passed a bill that would prevent schoolgirl killer Karla Homolka from seeking a pardon.
The four federal parties quickly agreed today to pass the pardon reform just hours before the Commons was expected to rise for its summer break.
Under the legislation, anyone convicted of a serious personal injury crime would have to wait 10 years after release from prison before applying for a pardon.
Currently, they have to wait three to five years.
The bill must still clear the Senate, but the upper chamber isn’t adjourning right away.
A separate bill to completely change the pardon system by barring serious, violent criminals from even applying, will be debated once the Commons returns in September.
Homolka left prison in 2005, after serving 12 years for her role in the gruesome sex slayings of two Ontario schoolgirls in the early 1990s.
Without the proposed reforms, she would have been eligible to apply for a pardon in about two weeks.

What does this mean? Once she serves her time, she could ask for a pardon and if she gets it, she is no longer guilty of any crime? I don't understand eva, please explain to your old dumb mama.

It's hard to imagine she would even be considered a pardon giving one of her victims was her baby sister.........and her family supports her, don't they? Crazy. She lived it up in prison, it was more like a sorority house than punishment. She shouldn't be walking around in society today after what she did.
Mama, she's already out of prison and from what I've read she's moved out of Canada. I assume this would clear her record, right Eva?

Possibility of Pardon
On April 19, 2010 The Vancouver Sun reported that Homolka will be eligible to seek pardon for her crimes in the summer of 2010. Offenders convicted of first or second degree murder or with indeterminate sentences cannot apply for a pardon, but due to her plea bargain Homolka was convicted of manslaughter, making her eligible. If she is successful her criminal record will not be erased but will be covered up in background checks, except those required for working with children or other vulnerable persons. The Canadian government plans to introduce legislation this year to make pardons more difficult to get.

Just unreal.........another reason murderers shouldn't be offered pleas to lighten their sentences.
