By the CNN Wire Staff
December 7, 2010 8:10 a.m. EST
(CNN) -- Police issued an Amber Alert for a 12-year-old girl who they suspect has been kidnapped after finding her mother dead inside a Salem, Virginia, home.
Brittany Mae Smith was last seen "several days ago," according to a Roanoke County statement issued Monday. Police launched a search for Jeffrey Scott Easley, 32, whom authorities describe as a friend of the dead mother.
"Police have said that the young lady is in extreme danger," said Teresa Hamilton Hall, public information director for Roanoke County.
Roanoke County police went to the Salem residence around 9:30 a.m. Monday after concerned co-workers of Tina Smith, the girl's mother, contacted them. Police found the 41-year-old woman's body inside, and authorities said they were investigating the death as a possible homicide.

Are they a couple? That's sick.
It looks like Easley's Myspace profile picture is a picture of the two of them together.

UPDATED: Survelliance video shows Easley and missing girl in Salem Walmart
Roanoke County police release an image of Brittany Mae Smith and Jeff Easley taken Friday night
December 7, 2010
In a news conference Tuesday afternoon Roanoke County police said Brittany Mae Smith and Jeff Easley were seen in Walmart in Salem Friday night. Police have surveillance video of the pair shopping at the store between 8:00pm and 8:30pm.
Authorities say 32-year-old Jeff Easley used Tina Smith's credit card to purchase items in Walmart. Salem Police have issued warrants for Easley for credit card fraud and credit card larceny. Tina Smith, Brittany's mother, was found murdered in her home Monday. Police also believe Jeff Easley is using Smith's car, a silver 2005 Dodge Neon.
Jeff Easley's mother, Sallie Martin, made a plea directly to her son to contact her or police. She urged Jeff to take Brittany to a safe place and return her or call 911. She told her son that she loved him and that they would work this out.
Police say the first phase of the autopsy on Tina Smith has been completed and they are now treating the case as a homicide investigation. Police would not reveal of cause of death.

Re: Brittany Smith -- Missing 12/2/10 BREAKING NEWS!! BRITTANY FOUND SAFE!
My first reaction is that Brittany doesnt know her mom is dead.. this looks like it happpened on a school day.. if he had come into the household and fooled her, he cud have made her happy to be a " step daughter" that cud explain her name change on myspace.. the way they are walking in the walmart doesnt look like she is free and happpy to be with him..
I dont believe at this point that she has anything to do with this monsters plans.. and feel she is in grave danger .. i hope they are found before it is too late..

Smith is believed to be with 32-year-old Jeffrey Scott Easley, a friend of her mothers who she met online this summer. Easley moved into Tina Smith's home in October. Tina Smith was found dead Monday in her home on Fort Lewis Circle.
I have a feeling Brittany doesn't know her mother is dead, either. He just moved into their home in October. The last name issue could be the step-dad thing. One thing is probably for sure, he moved in on Tina to get to her 12 year old daughter. Thank goodness for the concerned co-worker, same goes for the Maynard case.

Loved ones plead for Brittany Smith's safe return home
Missing 12-year-old Brittany Smith had told a friend that she didn't feel comfortable being around Jeffrey Easley, 32. Police have issued an arrest warrant for Easley, who they said abducted Brittany.
Wednesday, December 08, 2010
Brittany Smith called her friend a few weeks ago, scared.
The 12-year-old was afraid her mother's live-in boyfriend "would come over and take her away and hurt her mom," the friend, Rebecca Kilian, said Tuesday. Brittany asked Rebecca, 13, to stay on the phone with her until her mom got home.
"She told me not to call the police," the friend said.
Brittany's mother, Tina Smith, was worried, too. On Thursday, the 41-year-old Roanoke County nurse posted this on her Facebook profile:
"If I should die before I wake God bless my friends. May I be remembered for my good heart and hopeless romantic ways."
And on Friday, the last day she was seen alive, Tina Smith posted this: "God please protect us from the evils of this world."

Re: Brittany Smith -- Missing 12/2/10 BREAKING NEWS!! BRITTANY FOUND SAFE!
"His MySpace page was updated on Saturday.
"Got a lot on my mind," it said"
"Brittany's MySpace page mentions she and Easley working out and watching movies together. He called her "Short Stack. " She called him "Handcuff Buddy."
"Something about him was very sketchy to me," said Nicki Mullins, 16, a family friend. She said she believes Brittany felt the same way.
"Brittany said she didn't feel comfortable around him," Nicki said."
Maybe he had her change her name last week? From the way her friends talk, she wasn't too fond of him. Also, they are not saying what was purchased at Walmart. That could be very telling of his plans, stocking up and finding a place to hide out. He should know they can track Tina's credit card. I hope she's found soon.

Cops warn anyone aiding Easley and Brittany on the run
Wednesday, December 08, 2010
Updated 10:58 a.m.
Someone may be secretly aiding on-the-run Jeffrey Easley and 12-year-old Brittany Smith, the Roanoke County police chief said today.
"For someone with very little money to drop off the face of the earth, I think someone would have to be providing them money for them to remain unlocated," Chief Ray Lavinder said today. He said authorities would prosecute anyone aiding Easley, who police believe abducted Brittany
He said it doesn't matter to police whether Brittany went on the run with Easley voluntarily.
"What we are dealing with is a 12-year-old girl," the chief said. "She can't make legal decisions. Consent is irrelevant."

"Handcuff Buddy"? OH CRAP! That really bothers me. Whether willing or not (and it is sounding a lot more like NOT) this little girl is in major trouble. He does not have any positive thoughts in his mind. Maybe that was her way of hinting at what was going on.
I never have understood how a woman can move in a complete stranger with their family like that. Stupid doesn't begin to cover it! I have worked with so many children over the years who have to deal with the trauma of their previously loving parent choosing stupidity over protection of their children. And the children suffer horribly from this behavior.
LISTEN PEOPLE! Your physical desire to have someone share your bed should not override your brain! If you have children, you have to put them first.

I knnow I am often critical of the media and LE.... so here goes...
That above article makes me puke!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone who reads that for the first time, can be polluted instantly (not that they shud, but it seems like it has become human nature to assume the worst in potentially innocent ppl)....
I hate that the article leaves it open that Brittany " May" have left with him volentarily....
I hate that the articles even insinuates she may be " willing' most of us here know that even if she was " willing" her willingness wud not be via ANY INVOLVEMENT to the crime, but just a victim of his possible lies... in terms of what he may have said to her (like we are going to get your mom or we are meeting your mom, or a threat against her mom if she doesnt comply) ..
whatever the case, he is a monster and I fear it is already too late....
I think the media and LE wud get alot more attention to the monster if they put out there, that this girl is a victim, and needs to be found..
We have to know that he is prolly reading the reports and Im not saying he will be believed but he cud easily try and turn this around her. Not that he will be successful but why give him anymore ideas ??? He is a monster/pig and I pray he is caught today..
God Bless Brittany...

Looking for Brittany Mae Smith: The role of Facebook
How Social Media websites play into this case
Jean Jadhon WDBJ-TV Anchor/Reporter

Police are looking everywhere for answers to find Brittany Mae Smith, including the Internet. Investigators believe Smith and Jeff Easley's Facebook and My Space accounts could provide clues to help the investigation.
"We have made a number of attempts to get into the site," said Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder. "We had some success late this morning."
Gaining access to the sites has not been easy, however, because according to Lavinder, Facebook and My Space have denied police full access. "They granted us limited information to those sites," Lavinder said at a 3:30pm Wednesday press conference. "We'll pursue whatever options are available to get that data."
Meanwhile a site has gone up on Facebook urging Facebook to give up that information. Another site has been created as well. It's called 'Help Find Brittany Mae Smith.' More than 4,000 people have joined that site already, however, according to Hollins University Media Professor Vladimir Bratic "a whole lot fewer people are actually contributing to it."

Since they have just released that he bought a blue tent at Walmart, my guess is he's heading somewhere familiar, and warm. I think I read earlier he had ties in Alabama........

If this tent is big enough, he could also be using it to conceal Brittany's mother car if he is going somewhere he is familiar with.

It's hard to tell. I'm guessing he is probably keeping her at a campground. They could be anywhere. When Haylee Donathan's mother took her from Ohio and ran away with her sex offender boyfriend, they were found all the way across the country in San Diego.
I did read that Easley doesn't have much money, so there is a good possibility that they are still in the general area of where he bought the tent.

This doesn't surprise me, it's too cold to be living in a tent, I figured they'd head south. I believe they said he has ties to Alabama, maybe they've found a tie to Florida as well.

Search for Brittany Smith: Campgrounds, rest areas searched
By WSLS-TV Staff Reports
Published: December 09, 2010

Relatives of Tina Smith, Brittany Smith's mother, made an emotional plea for Brittany's safe return at an afternoon news conference.
Three of Tina's sisters and two of her brothers asked Jeffrey Easley to bring Brittany home, so she can say goodbye to her mother. The family members added that they are praying for Brittany's safe return, and hope that Easley does the right thing.
Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said that of the 500+ tips that the department has received so far, between 20-30% of them are from out of state.
Chief Lavinder added that tomorrow, Friday, December 10th marks one-week since Easley and Brittany were last spotted, and described that as a big concern for the task force.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children plans to start running pictures of Brittany and Easley on billboards in North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, West Virginia, and Ohio.
WSLS has also learned that "America's Most Wanted" will feature the search for Brittany on its show this coming Saturday night.

At least two phone calls were made to Social Services in the days before Brittany Mae Smith disappeared. Those calls were from relatives who were afraid something wasn't right with Jeff Easley and Brittany living in the same house.
A family member called Halifax County Social Services last week and social services confirms that a person who called there got a referral number.
Brittany's step-grandmother told News 7 that she called and made a complaint but was told if there is no physical evidence then nothing can be done.
The Regional Social Services Director would not comment on this specific case because of privacy laws, but Susan Reese said social services workers take children's welfare seriously.
"If we think a child is in danger at all or is in danger of being sexually abused then that's going to be an immediate response," Reese said. "A lot of times when there are situations like this a lot of rumors get started that just aren't true and because of confidentiality a lot of times social sevices can not respond to set the record straight,"

The Social Serivces Department has been slammed on national cable television programs for ignoring calls while workers enjoyed a Christmas Party. News 7 asked Reese about that.
"That was not true. The agency involved in that situation they're talking about is Halifax County Department of Social Services. There was a Christmas party, however, the agency had staff there," Reese said. "They had staff manning the front desk. They had staff manning the lines for child protective services as well as all the other program services. Social Services never closes down without emergency personnel there."
Thursday afternoon the Halifax County Department of Social Services released the following statement:
“The Halifax County Department of Social Services is committed to protecting children and their families. We will assist law enforcement in any way possible to affect the safe return of Brittany Smith. Halifax has reviewed reporting procedures and has determined that appropriate procedures are in place and were followed.”
This is crazy if it's true about the call coming in during a Christmas party. I read another article where a neighbor commented that she thought he was odd and felt the manner in which he looked at Brittany and the way in which in he touched her was really out of line.

Presser announces that Brittany was found safe & abductor in custody. This just happened a couple of hours ago so there will be more information coming out later. So far LE says a citizen saw the alerts out & spotted the two of them in a retail store (Safeway) then contacted LE. They were in SF, California. It was also announced that Brittany DOES know that her mother is dead.
Will update as more info comes out.

S.F. shopper helps capture fugitive, kidnap victim
Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer
Saturday, December 11, 2010

On Friday, San Francisco police called Virginia police after the shopper spotted the fugitive and the girl at the Safeway at 48th Avenue and Fulton Street. They described distinctive tattoos Easley had on his calves to confirm his identity.
"We're immensely happy," Lavinder said late Friday, thanking both the alert shopper and San Francisco police for capturing the man and recovering the kidnap victim without incident.
The two, who were detained at about 1:30 p.m., had been living in a makeshift encampment near Ocean Beach, police said. The tent Easley had purchased at the Virginia Walmart was found in the encampment nearby, police said.

"We're so thankful to her - for a person to be that observant, 3,000 miles away, is almost incredible," Roanoke County Police Chief Ray Lavinder said about the unidentified shopper who recognized Jeffrey Scott Easley, 32, from a TV report and called police, leading to his arrest and the recovery of 12-year-old Brittany Mae Smith.
This woman is a hero and just proves why these missing children have to be kept in the news and on the blogs.
I'm surprised he drove to California! Where was his money coming from? Brittany will have many issues to deal with when she gets home for a long time to come. I'm so thankful she was found alive.

Girl, Abductor Panhandling When Arrested In SF
Updated: 12:11 am PST December 11, 2010

A Safeway spokeswoman said Jeffrey Scott Easely, 32, and the 12-year-old girl never actually made it into the store -- they were pan-handling outside when a customer recognized them and called police.
“A witness felt they had seen suspect on Nancy Grace TV show and we believe it’s an accurate statement,” said Sgt. Lynn Tomioka, a SFPD spokesperson.
~Snipped~
Police say Easley fled Virginia with his girlfriend's 12-year-old daughter a week ago and a few days later the girl's mother was found murdered in her home. A source with San Francisco Police said that Easely attempted to drive the 12-year-old girl across the country but ran out of gas, forcing them to take a bus to San Francisco. Police were still looking for Easely's vehicle Friday.

If only NG cud spend ALL HER TIME, on airing SO MANY FACES of missing and endangered ppl, instead pof wasting so much time on senstaionalism, what a great show it cud be... Too bad she spends most of her time, stuck on stories that continue to inflate her wallet, and help create doubt on innocent before proven guilty.....
Im glad this story got so much attention, and caught the eye of the caller...

JC Edralin works at the Wells Fargo bank inside the Safeway and saw the 12-year-old girl being questioned by police.
“She just looked really innocent,” said Edralin. “She looked kind of in the zone, like zoned out”
He says the girl was surrounded by what looked like several bags of personal belongings.
“She had a lot. I mean it looked like enough for a family of four,” said Edralin.
Sounds like he had her pack her belongings to take with her.

New surveillance video of Easley & Brittany Smith before leaving area
By Scott Leamon
Published: December 13, 2010

10 On Your Side has obtained new surveillance video of Jeff Easley and Brittany Smith from the night of December 3rd.
The video, taken at the Salem Apple Market on West Main Street, shows Easley buying gas and a few other items at around 9:20 p.m., roughly 45 minutes after leaving the Salem Walmart, where police say he bought camping gear with Tina Smith's credit card.
Brittany Smith appears in most of the Apple Market video, although there is a few minutes while inside the store when she separates from Easley, outside of the store camera's view.

Garden City man 'could have assisted' in Roanoke County slaying, warrant says
2:30 p.m. EST, December 14, 2010
~Snipped~
Easley, 32, -- who declined to fight his extradition back to Virginia during a brief appearance in a San Francisco court Tuesday -- sold his 2000 Chevrolet SUV to Adam McElvy and Jordan McClure the night of Dec. 3, the day police say Tina Smith was killed in her Roanoke County home, according to a search warrant filed today in Roanoke City Circuit Court.
~Snipped~
McElvy and McClure gave police inconsistent statements about their interactions with Easley and Brittany that day, according to the warrant.
"McElvy could have assisted in the murder" because of "the inconsistencies in McElvy and McClure's statements and the possibility that McElvy was with Easley at the Apple Market, which is in close proximity of the crime scene and within the time parameters of the victim's death," the warrant said.
McElvy and McClure have a television, DVD player, DVDs and a Nintendo Wii game console that were taken from Tina Smith's house, the the warrant said.

It seems so unlikely that anyone else was involved in such a senseless murder ... the monster likely diud it all by himslef with his own sick motives.... he may have sold the car packed with all the electronics to try and get more money.. hopefully new rumours wont start to confuse and distract from tis case...

What a pig. Brittany is wringing her hands in the video, Easley joking with the cashier and buying chew after murdering and robbing Tina of her daughter, then selling her belongings. Evil. It's a miracle Brittany is still alive.
