Re: Elizabeth Ennen -- Found Deceased 1/24/11
I just have one question...
When will all LE agencies learn to search for anyone who is missing regardless of whether they think they are runaways?!?!?!?!
Too much precious time is wasted at the very beginning when clues are the freshest.

I agree, esp. if the missing person is a minor.

Missing Texas Girl Elizabeth Ennen Strangled
Police Say Father of Kids Elizabeth Was Babysitting Is Responsible for Death
By JESSICA HOPPER
Jan. 26, 2011
Texas teen Elizabeth Ennen, who vanished after babysitting a family friend's children, was found dead Monday and police today said that she was strangled. Surveillance video showed the girl being grabbed by her alleged kidnapper, the husband of a family friend.
Elizabeth, 15, had been missing for 19 days when police discovered her body along a roadside Monday in Lubbock, Texas. Her mother, Virginia Ennen, reported her missing in the early morning hours of Jan. 5 when she didn't return from babysitting the children of a family friend, Humberto Maldonado Salinas.
Salinas, 45, was apparently present when Virginia Ennen called police. Police said that Salinas began misdirecting investigators.

~Snipped~
Surveillance video from that night shows Elizabeth walking quickly out of Room 113, holding her shoes and attempting to put her coat on, when a man police have identified as Salinas forcefully grabs her and forces her back into the room, according to Lubbock police. Minutes later, shortly after midnight on Jan. 5, the video shows the man grabbing Elizabeth, taking her to the parking lot of the motel, police said. That was the last time she was seen alive.
Salinas later went to the Elizabeth's home to deliver the girl's purse and told her mother, Virginia Ennen, that he had dropped her off earlier that morning. Panicked that she had not seen her daughter, Ennen called police. Salinas was still at the Ennen home when police arrived, and authorities say he offered misleading information, including implicating his own son.
"Humberto Salinas Jr. was present when that initial call was made," Capt. Greg Stevens said at a press conference today. "At that point, the person we believe is responsible for her death began the process of covering up a crime which we believe he had already committed."
Salinas is being held in Lubbock County, currently charged with aggravated kidnapping. Police believe he is responsible for Elizabeth's death. He has a previous criminal record that includes charges of domestic assault, felony theft and violence on a child, according to court records. Police say they are awaiting the complete results of Elizabeth's autopsy and want to continue working their investigation before charging Salinas with anything more.

And he tried to implicate his own son.....sickening. And she'd been missing since January 5th and was immediately considered a runaway. Tragic..........

This is just too sad. I think it needs to be that LE thoroughly investigates missing children before calling them runaways. Even if a child has run away before. In this day and age, no child missing from his guardian is safe and should be treated with much more seriousness.

LUBBOCK — A 15-year-old girl whose body was found along a roadside in West Texas was strangled soon after her abduction from a motel where she had been babysitting the children of a man accused in her disappearance, authorities said Wednesday.
Lubbock County Medical Examiner Sridhar Natarajan declined to elaborate on what was used to strangle Elizabeth Ennen Jan. 4, and would not comment on whether she had been sexually assaulted.
Elizabeth had been listed as a runaway until her body was discovered Monday evening near Shallowater, about 10 miles northwest of Lubbock.

I wrote this poem as a dedication to all of the Elizabeth Ennen's in the world. May she and all of the others Rest In Peace.
(I do realize that there is a lot more going on in an investigation than what we see, but sometimes, it turns out that it's just not enough...)
Innocent Until Proven Guilty
Whatever happened to innocent
'til proven guilty without a doubt?
It works for the thieves and murderers
but our children are being left out.
A phone call comes in from a mother
of a daughter who hasn't come home.
Or maybe the call's from a father
who's son is not likely to roam.
These parents are frantically begging
the authorities to help them find
their beloved one who's gone missing,
but they are told it's all in their mind.
The child is instantly labeled
as troubled and running from home.
Precious time is lost while waiting
for them to return on their own.
Whether ten years old or past their teens
they're treated as if they're the one
who is guilty for disobeying,
and there's nothing that can be done.
If they did in fact leave on their own,
does that make them any less gone?
They're out there somewhere and all alone;
easy targets to be preyed upon.
And what if they're not a runaway,
but were taken against their will?
They've not been taken seriously;
and so many are missing still.
I'd rather go looking for hundreds
and find that they chose to be gone,
than to just sit back and do nothing
and find I was terribly wrong.
So how about if we try to do
something new that's never been done?
Let's treat them as if they're abducted
and not assume they're all on the run.

**On January 5, 2011, a 15 year old girl went missing while babysitting for a "friend" of the family. Although her mother immediately reported her missing and there was a surveillance video from a local motel of a man chasing and grabbing the girl and forcing her into a room, the police determined that she was a runaway. It would be 16 days before the police would finally believe that she had been abducted. The girl's body was found strangled along the roadside.**
As a victim of an attempted abduction, my passion is to heighten the awareness of
missing & exploited children & adults. It is my desire that each and every one of them return home to their families.
Each year approximately 800,000 to 900,000 people in the US are reported missing. About 1/4 of these can be attributed to parental abductions while runaways make up almost half of the number of missing children. Although they have left on their own, many will fall into dangerous situations and they need to be found before it's too late.
Next are the victims of stranger abduction; predators, pedophiles, human trafficking or possibly someone who wants the child for their own. I cannot understand why people think they have the right to "steal" another human for their own sick purpose or for profit.
