AURORA, Ind. -- Emergency workers in Aurora are setting up a staging area to search for a 7-year-old boy with autism who went out with his dog and hasn't returned home.

Police said the dog returned to the home at 451 Park Ave., but the boy has not. The boy was last seen at about 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

Officers said John Burton Jr. -- who is non-verbal -- was wearing gray swim trunks, no shirt and no shoes. He has blond hair that has been cut in a Mohawk style.

Crews are searching for a missing 7-year-old autistic child in Aurora, In.


According to authorities in Aurora, the child, John D. Burton, was last seen in his home on the 400 block of Park Ave. around noon.

Police say John does not communicate verbally and will hide from people he believes are looking for him.

He stands 4' 10" tall, has a thin build with a blonde mohawk haircut, and was last seen wearing only some grey swim trucks.

I hope little John is just hiding out and they will find him soon. The town he lives in is pretty small, very rural outside of town and sits on the Ohio River, which is still swollen.

I hope this little fellow is found safe and sound. That must be so scarey for him to be outside in the dark.

This breaks my heart. He can't even ask for help .. and chances are he is hiding from it too Let's hope this one has a happy ending.

Investigators said Burton will sometimes hide from people he believes are looking for him.

Police said they initially thought Burton was with a dog when he disappeared, but they now said that's not the case.

Bloodhounds were brought in to try and track Burton, but so far they have turned up empty handed.

Ed Napier with Buckeye Search and Rescue Dogs said, "You feel for these people. It's emotional in that sense, but we train very hard and we're trying to find a successful conclusion."

Sunday night investigators say Burton's scent stopped near a creek. But, officials say they are nearly certain he's not in the water.

Chief Bryan Fields with the Aurora Police Department said, "Right now our investigation is mainly treating this as missing persons. But we'd be remiss if we didn't say we're not interested in an abduction scenario. But we don't have evidence that would support that at this point."

Crews searched until dark, then used a helicopter with a thermal imaging camera to look for the boy's body heat.

My heart is breaking for this little guy. Now they are saying the dog wasn't with him. The creeks and rivers are swollen around here. Let's hope and pray they find him and bring him home today and that foul play is not involved.

AURORA, Ind. -- A boy missing since Sunday morning has been found dead.

Aurora police said John Burton Jr., 7, was found dead in Hogan Creek early Monday by Indiana wildlife officers. The boy's body was found near the Aurora City Park.

Burton, who is autistic, had reportedly wandered away from his family's home just before noon Sunday.

This is awful.

The police chief in the video states that this particular creek was at normal level. They'll release more information in a few hours.

So Piper, this little boy drowned?? At least he wasn't molested or harmed by someone else.

They believe so, waiting on autopsy report. According to this article, they had just moved in this new house on Saturday, moved there from a small nearby town. Then this happened on Sunday. So tragic.
