Nebraska Third-Grader Kerra Wilson Missing After Being Dropped Off At School By Stepfather



Kerra Wilson, age 8, was last seen in the north parking lot of Mitchell Elementary School in Mitchell, Nebraska around 8 a.m. Wednesday morning after being dropped off by her stepfather. She is 4’2”, weighs 78 pounds, and has shoulder length brown hair with red stripes in it.

A counselor said Kerra's teachers reported her absent at 8:15 a.m. Kerra's mother, Amanda Lopez, was notified of Kerra's absence Wednesday afternoon, and Kerra's grandmother reported her missing around 3 pm.

An Amber Alert wasn't issued because authorities say they have no information so far to lead them to believe Kerra was abducted. The search for Kerra is scheduled to resume this morning.

The teachers reported her absent at 8:15, but they didn't notify the mom until the afternoon? Since the school didn't get a call off from the mom, they should have checked with her way sooner than the "afternoon".

I was wondering about that Julie. That is too long of a lag time between noticing her absent and notifying her mother. There is no excuse for that, but sometimes there are conflicting reports when these cases first break and some of the information put out there in the various articles ends up being inaccurate.

True, but if the original info is accurate, then there's no excuse for them to wait that long. I'd be furious. I would hope to get the phone call at least within the first half hour to hour.

It's hard to say whether she wandered off or was abducted, but I wish they could issue an Amber Alert in this case.

I wonder if there were any other witnesses who saw Kerra in the school parking lot besides her stepfather. I hope HLN starts covering this case. Come next week, it looks like HLN is going to put all the missing children cases on the backburner because of the Dr. Conrad Murray trial.

I was wondering if Kerra was seen at the school too. It would be easy to make sure he was seen in the parking lot, as an alibi for later, if the stepfather had anything to do with it, which I'm not saying he did.

Here is a view of the parking lot. It looks like there is a clear view of the entrance from anywhere in the parking lot.

At our elementary school where Chase goes, you have to pull up to the side entrance, next to the cafeteria and the gym teacher opens your car door, lets your kid out and they have to go straight in the side door before you drive off. When picking up your kid, you have to line up from the highway, around the parking lot, to the front entrance. There are 3 spaces, #1, #2 and #3 with barrels there, and there is a teacher at each barrel. We have our kid's name on a card in the rear passenger window, the kid is called by walkie-talkies to a teacher inside, where all the car riders are sitting on the floor of the hallway. The inside teacher calls out the kids name, they go out to the teacher at your car, that teacher opens the rear car door and puts your child inside the car. Then they close the door.

All elementary schools should be set up with that system. All the kids are picked up and out of there within 20 minutes.

All teachers at his school have computers and cell phones, and mom's have to inform the teacher before school begins that the child will not be there that day. Their school begins @ 8:00am, and if a child is not there, and they have not received a message, the mom (or dad) will be notified immediately.

Mama, that's pretty much how our drop offs and pick ups are too.
I have no idea what time frame they would call if a child was absent without a call off.

Maybe you need to check with your school how they handle this if you don't call ahead of time.

Now the middle school here is different. You have to get in line and drive your child to the front door of the school, and there are two police officers standing there, but they don't get the kids out of the cars. On pick up, you just wait in line till you get in the drive to the school, but your kids can come out to your car as soon as they see it.

As soon as the teacher does her roll call and checks the kids that are not present, she sends the report to the office. If that parent has not called ahead, then the parent gets a message via text to her cell phone, or a message via e-mail by 8:30am.

I probably should check, but whoever drops them off sees them go into the school. So I never really thought about it or worried about it. But as we've seen in some of these cases, they never make it to the classrooms, unfortunately.

Julie, the only door at the elementary school that is unlocked at all times is the front door, that is right at the office. None of the other doors can be opened from the outside, except with a key card, which all the teachers carry on a leash-like band around their necks.

When Mr. Hefner gets the kids out of the cars, there is a teacher standing at the door to the building to let the kids inside. If I have to check Chase out early, I have to go to the office and using their computer, sign him out, and the computer takes a picture. He is in a different building than the main one, so his teacher's aide has to walk him to the main building, unlock the side door and walk him to the office and turn him over to me. I cannot go to his classroom to get him.

However, if I am going to his class as an aide, I still have to sign in at the office, get a visitor's badge with my picture on it. Then someone from the office has to walk me to the building Chase is in, unlock the door and walk with me to his classroom. When I am done, I have to be escorted back to the office, (so they can unlock the door for me at the main building) and I have to sign out. Every week, they print out all the comings and goings from that computer and keep them locked up.

Yours has more security measures than mine, but I am comfortable with the procedures that they do have. Schools have to take more precautions nowadays than when I was in school. It's pretty sad how things have changed.

I'm confused after watching the Nancy Grace clip. The stepfather said he dropped her off at the school, but no cameras picked her up on school grounds. Then there are witnesses who saw her across the street from the school outside of the Subway without her stepfather, but no Subway workers saw her. According the the witnesses, they saw her headed back towards the school, but as we know, she never made it.

That is weird. Why would she go sit outside at a Subway restaurant?

I wonder if a crossing guard can verify she made it back onto school grounds?

In the early evening hours of Thursday investigators from the Nebraska State Patrol and the FBI were notified by a local rancher alerting them to an area that he felt needed to be examined. The area was located several miles north of Mitchell. Upon their arrival investigators located what is believed to be the body of 8-year-old Kerra Wilson.

Preliminary identification of the body was made through articles of clothing, physical characteristics and evidence found at the scene. Due to the rugged terrain and time of night investigators were unable to move the body and process the scene.

Based on the discovery of Kerra's body and the evidence at the scene, Salvador Carlos Lopez, 32, of Mitchell was arrested in the death of Kerra Wilson. At this time Lopez is being held in the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center on a charge of first-degree murder.

The state patrol said a rancher called police after finding something suspicious, and that investigators found Kerra Wilson's body Thursday evening in a rugged area of Sioux County that is several miles north of her home in Mitchell.

Police had been searching for Kerra since Wednesday afternoon, when her school called her parents because she hadn't shown up. Her stepfather, 32-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez, told investigators he had dropped her off at Mitchell Elementary School that morning.

The stepdad's story sure didn't add up Ann, but I was hoping against hope that he didn't harm Kerra. The Subway sighting threw me a little bit. I had read about it yesterday, but the article noted that it was unconfirmed, so I disregarded it. Then I made the mistake of listening to the people on Nancy Grace who were talking about the Subway sighting as if it were fact.

Kerra Wilson was reported missing Wednesday shortly before 3 p.m. MDT by her grandmother.

Stepfather charged in girl's death

MITCHELL, Neb. -- Court documents reveal very little new information on charges against a Mitchell man accused of killing his 8-year-old stepdaughter.

Salvador Carlos Lopez, 32, of Mitchell, has been charged with first-degree murder. Jail records also indicate that Lopez is being held on a felony charge of sexual assault of a minor, but no formal charge to that effect has been filed.

The Nebraska State Patrol arrested Lopez in connection with Wilson’s death after her body was found in a rugged area on a Sioux County ranch. The girl had been missing since Wednesday, Sept. 21, and searchers for the girl included a search dog and Nebraska State Patrol aircraft.

I agree with you, Justice!

It seems so many of the mothers are so desperate for a man that they put themselves before the safety and welfare of their children. If some of these so called mothers would check out the man's background before moving him into their home, maybe their child would be alive.

It works both ways. Men need to check out their female friends too. There have been cases involving wicked step-moms and girlfriends.

I know nothing about Lopez . . . yet.

I thought Nancy Grace would be covering this case tonight! Turned it on and she is flapping her jaws about Dancing with the Stars! Last night she made a comment about squeezing Kerra's cute chubby cheeks! What a heck of a thing to say about a missing child (at the time Kerra was considered missing).

Justice, I noticed how Nancy kept focusing on the Subway and the table where Kerra was supposed to have been sitting. I am usually way ahead of Nancy Grace (her news is old to me and usually a day late) and I thought where is she getting that from. Law enforcement had not confirmed that to be true.

I would not want anyone to stay in an abusive situation (I know you wouldn't either, J4A) but it seems that the least little things send people to divorce court. I think marriage counceling pre-marriage is a great idea, too.

If this guy is a sociopath, then his evil side may have been well concealed under his charm.

I think kids thrive best in a healthy two parent family, where the parents are married to each other. But I think a lot of the cases on this site, the bio parents were never married to each other in the first place, which opens the door to (mostly) the mom introducing a new boyfriend into the family unit. I'm sure there's a lot of the time where this works out fine for everyone involved, and we of course only end hearing about the ones that end tragically. For the cases we've seen here, if you are going to become a step-parent, your role is now that of a parent. You are supposed to love, protect and nurture your new step-child, as if he or she were your own bio child. And for crying out loud to the boyfriends/stepdads in these cases keep your filthy hands off of the little girls, that is soooooooo sick!

Kerra was an amazing little girl who touched people’s hearts the instant she met them. Once you met Kerra you never forgot her. She was always the bright light illuminating even against the darkness, when she flashed a smile you were instantly hooked. She loved being a “lil mommy” to her siblings and any other little ones she was ever around.

She was wise beyond her years, a generous, loving little girl who always tried to put other above herself. If she was eating a meal or a snack and she thought a sibling wanted more she would offer hers saying “I am full.” She truly was a generous, loving, concerned little girl who relished in making others happy and brought a smile to their face.

Her mere presence could light up a room; bring a smile to your face, and warmth to your heart. She accomplished more in her eight short years than most people only hope and dream to achieve. She aspired to grow up to be just like her mommy, looking forward to becoming a mommy someday as well as a school teacher. When her brother, Kooper, was born the separation of just a few hours was heart wrenching for both Kerra and her Mom.

She was a typical little girl who loved High School Musical, Hannah Montana, Selena Gomez and all the things girly, including being a drama queen at times. She enjoyed swimming, playing on the trampoline, watching movies, playing with and reading books to her siblings. She liked spending time with family and friends, singing along and dancing to favorite songs. She found pleasure in playing jokes on people she was close to. If she thought you were down she would do whatever it took to cheer you up.

Her absence will forever leave a huge void for all who loved and adored her. Black holes and black clouds do exist. We will forever have black holes in our hearts, overshadowed by black clouds. Kerra loved unconditionally and died without reason. Kerra Marie you will never be forgotten.

Kerra leaves behind her mother Amanda, brother Kooper, sisters Keanny and Nathiiah, her Nana and Papa Wilson (Bill and Shelly), her uncle Aaron and aunt Abby, as well as great-grandfather Joe McAninch all of Mitchell; aunt Billie and uncle James Megli of Torrington, Wyoming; great-grandparents Beryl and Orin Florence, great-aunt Melissa Elder, great-aunt and uncle Marsha and Richard Garza all of Syracuse, Kansas; great-aunt and uncle Tammy and Jeff Munsch of Colorado Springs, Colorado; great-uncle Grant Florence of Ulysses, Kansas; multiple cousins, as well as stepsisters Jasmin and Miah; stepbrothers Michael, Brandon and Blake; and very special friends Gayle, Gene, and Chapman Hascall whom Kerra knew as Aunt, Grandpa, and Cousin from Torrington, Wyoming.

At the request of the family the media was not allowed at the service Thursday at the Scotts Bluff County Event Center. But Stephens discussed his message earlier in the day in an interview with KNEB News.

That was a sad flowery very long obituary for such a young innocent child. The article published in KNEB newspapers stated that Kerra "passed away". The obit writer may have tried to be politically correct, but was not correct, in the sense that she didn't die of natural causes, she was murdered by her step-father. Poor little child. Another life stolen from another helpless little girl. This happens over and over.
