BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Forensic findings have resulted in new investigative leads into the 1993 killing of 10-year-old Holly Piirainen.

Holly Piirainen was visiting her grandmother in Sturbridge on Aug. 5, 1993 when she vanished. Her remains were found in Brimfield two months later.

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Tuesday we should learn more about a possible break in an unsolved murder case that has baffled police for decades.

The Hampden County district attorney's office says recent forensic findings have resulted in new leads in the disappearance and murder of 10-year-old Holly Piirainen. The office isn’t releasing specific information.

A private eye who has studied the case but has not been briefed on the new development says the announcement suggests authorities have come across a strong and reliable piece of evidence.

“They have a high degree of confidence,” in the new information, said Tom Shamshak, a private investigator and former Spencer police chief who has worked with Holly’s family through the Molly Bish Foundation. “The family has been asked to participate, and they wouldn’t be generating false hope. This is a relatively significant event in this investigation.”

“I know there has been a flurry of activity within the past year,” he said, but he declined to go into detail. “There’s been some more work being done. This case is far from off the radar.”

But now there’s renewed hope. Private Investigator Dan Malley stumbled upon some shocking new details while working on a child custody case involving Gerald Battistoni-- who's serving time at a state prison for rape.

Malley told 22News he didn't seek out the information, there were just details he couldn't ignore that linked Battistoni to the area where both Holly and Molly were found during those years.

(FOX 25 / MYFoxBoston.com) - FOX 25's Bob Ward has confirmed that a potential new suspect is emerging in the 1993 unsolved abduction and murder of 10-year-old Holly Piirainen.

Multiple sources have confirmed for Ward that Hampden County District Attorney Mark Mastroianni will reveal the name of David Pouliot, a 49-year-old Springfield man who died in 2003, as a potential suspect in a news conference scheduled for Tuesday morning.
