Whitney Houston died this afternoon ... a rep for the singer told the Associated Press.

Our sources tell us a member of Whitney's entourage found her in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel ... and called hotel security -- who then dialed 911. When paramedics arrived Houston was found unresponsive.

We're told police arrived to the scene within minutes and fire was already there on an unrelated call. According to our sources, paramedics performed CPR but it did not work and she was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM.

She sold more records and received more awards than almost any other female pop star of the 20th century, but spent most of her last years mired in a drug addiction that sapped her will to sing and left her in a shambolic state.

Her death at the age of 48 will send her albums back into the charts, and introduce her music to a generation who knew her only as a troubled character whose commercial success peaked in the 1990s. Though never edgy as a musician – her skills were often wasted on bland adult-contemporary songs – she was more than just a purveyor of anodyne chart hits. Houston was lauded by other vocalists for her impeccable technique and polish, qualities that elevated her above almost every other star of her era.

I saw a You Tube video making a claim that she died after a courageous battle with lung disease. I can't find it in a news report though. With all of the drugs she did and that she was found in a hotel room where Clive Davis was having a pre-Grammy party tells me it may have been drug related.

I loved this movie.

What a beautiful voice Whitney had!

She had a long history of drug addiction. It will not surprise me if her death is drug related.

Singer Whitney Houston found dead

LOS ANGELES – Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died, Fox News confirms. She was 48.

The Beverly Hills Police Department responded to an emergency call at the Beverly Hills Hotel Saturday, Lt. Mark Rosen, of the Bevery Hills Police Department said.

Members of hotel staff and fire department officials attempted to revive a person on the fourth floor, who has since been confirmed to be Houston, Rosen said.

Officials did not see obvious signs of criminal intent, and are currently investigating to determine the cause of death, he said.

Music exec: Whitney Houston looked 'healthy and beautiful' days earlier

The organizers of Sunday's Grammy Awards said they have retooled the show to pay respect to Houston, with the help of singer Jennifer Hudson.

"It's going to be something respectful," said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the show. "It's not going to be a full-blown tribute. That's too early and it's too fresh at this moment. It's going to be something respectful to Whitney's memory."

But musician Paul Shaffer said he thinks the whole show will double as a tribute to Houston.

"Here is music's happiest night combined with such a sad note," he said. "You got to be some kind of philosopher to make some kind of sense out of this. I certainly can't."

Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston, spoke with her daughter 25-30 minutes before she died and nothing seemed unusual ... sources tell TMZ. We're told they talked about attending the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party.

Nancy Grace apparently wants to turn Whitney Houston's death into a murder case.

The obnoxious CNN host drew plenty of viewers to her show covering the Michael Jackson case, so it's not that surprising that she wants authorities to discover another Dr. Conrad Murray. She's already looking to point a finger at whoever sold Whitney prescription drugs or gave them to her, but her accusations go even further than that.

According to the Daily Mail, here's what Nancy recently said about Whitney's death: 'I'd like to know who was around her, who, if anyone gave her drugs - following alcohol and drugs - and who let her slip, or pushed her, underneath that water?"

The words “I was wrong” are not in Nancy Grace’s vocabulary.

Her speculation that Whitney Houston could have been murdered set off a firestorm. Whoopi Goldberg blasted Grace on “The View” Wednesday for the comment. But the HLN host wasn’t apologizing for the remark this morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” It made for some incredible TV because Grace was so defensive and condescending.

ABC News legal analyst Dan Abrams asked: “Nancy, can’t you just say, you know what, ‘I was wildly speculating and I’m sorry? I shouldn’t have said it. It was inappropriate.’ ”

Grace shot back, “That is not speculation.”

In my opinion, NG needs to quit the speculation and do as the Coroner said, "Take a deep breath, quit the speculation and wait for the toxicology tests." (not verbatim)

NG really becomes defensive in the interview with Robin Roberts and Dan Abrams - Good Morning America.

It seems she gets angry and her nostrils flair! I got the impression that Dan Abrams and Robin Roberts were appalled by the way NG was speculating about Whitney Houston on her (NG) show!

I think Robin and Dan did a great job of calling NG out on this speculation. Dan had a hard time getting a word in edge wise! He did not back off and NG of course did not apologize.

In the Orlando Sentinel article, I think Hal Boedeker hits the nail on the head!

Coroner: Whitney Houston had signs of 'chronic' cocaine usage

Updated at 7 p.m. PT: The official cause of death for Whitney Houston is drowning and "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use," according to a report released Thursday by the L.A. County Department of the Coroner.

The report indicates that the Houston died when she was submerged in a bathtub filled with water, and also indicates that she had ingested cocaine.
