ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. — Late summer at Mill River Park brings fishermen plying the pond, teenagers shooting baskets, and families tossing Frisbees across the grass.
But on Sunday, some had come to the park not to relax but to mourn. The footbridge that arches over a busy road, connecting a soccer field to a strip mall, drew a trickle of those who had known Lauren Daverin, the 18-year-old whose body was found there on Thursday night.
Tied to the green fencing of the footbridge was a poster covered in messages of love and remembrance, some from Ms. Daverin’s large, close-knit family, including one from her husband of 10 months, Kashawn Gresham, a member of the military who was stationed in the South.
“You will always be loved,” he wrote. “You made me the luckiest man in the world.”

A Long Beach teen charged in the strangling death of a Lynbrook teenager was ordered held without bail Sunday as nearly three dozen distraught relatives and friends of the victim looked on in a crowded Hempstead courtroom.
Maxwell T. Sherman, 18, of 21 Louisiana St., was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree murder by strangulation in connection with the death of Lauren Daverin, 18.
Sherman's attorney, Jenna Suppon of the Nassau Legal Aid Society, asked Judge David Sullivan for "reasonable" bail at the arraignment in First District Court. Sullivan denied the request and ordered Sherman held at Nassau County Jail until he is due back in court Aug. 28.

(CBS) HAUPPAGUE, N.Y. - An 18-year-old man has pleaded not guilty in the death of a teenage woman who was found strangled on a Long Island footbridge Thursday.Maxwell Sherman was arraigned Sunday on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Lauren Daverin, also 18.
Carolyn Gusoff of CBS New York interviewed Sherman at the crime scene on Friday, a day before his arrest. At the time of the interview, he was not a suspect.
Police say Daverin was found beaten and naked Thursday by friends on a footbridge over Merrick Road in Rockville Center.
~Snipped~
Sherman told the reporter that he met Daverin for about five minutes when he walked by and got a cigarette form a friend who was hanging out with the group. When Gusoff asked Sherman about his reaction to Daverin's death, he responded, "Amazed, kind of. It's right in the middle of town; surprised."
Gusoff asked the teen if there was anything going on that would suggest that somebody was getting hurt. He said, "Nah, everybody was just chilling; hanging out."
In the mugshot, Sherman is seen wearing the same shirt he was wearing during the interview with CBS New York. Scratches on his face are also visible in the photo.

MINEOLA - The suspect accused of killing a Lynbrook teen faced a judge today as friends and family said a final farewell to the victim.
Lauren Daverin, 18, was laid to rest today in Hicksville. The newlywed was strangled to death on a Rockville Centre footbridge last week, authorities say.
Prosecutors say 18-year-old Maxwell Sherman murdered Daverin. He is being held without bail.
Sherman's attorney William Petrillo says there is a chance that his client could be out of jail by the end of the week if prosecutors don't take swift action.
"We've asked for what's known as a felony exam, which requires the prosecution in this case to either indict him by Friday or we have application that he be released at that point," Petrillo says.

Maxwell Sherman, an 18-year-old former Rockville Centre resident who currently lives in Long Beach, was arraigned in Nassau County Court on Sunday, charged with the murder of Lauren Daverin-Gresham.
Daverin-Gresham, 18, of Lynbrook, was found strangled, nude and lying in a pool of blood, on the Merrick Road footbridge in western Rockville Centre on Aug. 22. David Paiz, a 14-year-old Rockville Centre resident, found her body and called the police at about 10 p.m. Paiz said he was with Daverin-Gresham earlier in the day, hanging out with her and others at the footbridge, before he left and later returned.
“We were walking over on the bridge and we saw a body over there, so we walked toward it,” he said. “And then we called the police right away.” According to Paiz, Daverin-Gresham was wearing only boots and was in a “very awkward position.”

Teenager arrested in Long Island teen’s murder had TV interview at crime scene

The alleged drug-fiend son of an affluent Chicago couple, accused of strangling a beautiful Long Island teen, chillingly had an interview with TV reporters at the scene only hours after the murder.
Maxwell Sherman, 18, who was living with his parents in their waterfront second home in Long Beach for the summer, was approached by a WCBS/Channel 2 TV crew at about 11 a.m. Friday as he hung around the Rockville Centre footbridge where Lauren Daverin’s nude body was discovered the night before.
A reporter asked the teen — who was chain-smoking and pacing back and forth with his cellphone in his hand — if he was surprised by the grisly find.
“I’m amazed, I’m amazed,” Sherman said before shuffling off.

The 18-year-old charged with second-degree murder in the death of a woman found strangled on a Rockville Centre footbridge is due back in court Friday, after his attorney invoked his client's right to a speedy trial.
Maxwell Sherman appeared briefly Wednesday before a judge during a felony conference held in Mineola. Sherman, who has retained Garden City attorney William Petrillo, is being held without bail at Nassau County Jail.

Daverin-Gresham, who attended high school in Lynbrook and Malverne, had gotten married 10 months ago. She wed Kashawn Gresham in a civil ceremony. He is an airman first class stationed at the Air Force base in Bossier City, La., family friends said.
In court, Petrillo said his client is asking for a speedy trial. That means he has demanded the prosecution either present their evidence and witnesses, obtain a quick grand jury indictment or release him.

Kahawn Gresham, Lauren Daverin's husband.
"Daverin married Freeport resident Kashawn Gresham, an Air Force airman first class, in a civil ceremony last summer. “He used to live around here,” said Barabash. “He’s stationed in Louisiana now. A Long Beach man was sentenced Thursday to 18 years to life in prison for the murder of a Lynbrook woman on a Rockville Centre footbridge two years ago.
Authorities have never offered a motive for the murder, but Maxwell Sherman's attorney suggested later that his client, 18 at the time of the killing, might have been under the influence of alcohol that night.

Guilty plea in murder of Lauren Daverin, teen newlywed
NEW YORK -- A Long Island man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of an 18-year-old newlywed, reports CBS New York.
Maxwell Sherman, 19, was accused of strangling Lauren Daverin, whose body was found naked and beaten near a footbridge in Rockville Centre on Aug. 22, 2013. Sherman told the judge he intentionally murdered Daverin.
On the day before his arrest, Sherman told CBS New York that he said he was part of the group hanging out with Daverin the night she was murdered.
"With this top-count conviction, the defendant has admitted his guilt in the murder of 18-year-old Lauren Daverin and her grieving family is spared from having to relive this brutal crime through a trial," Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said in a statement.
Daverin, a Long Island native, had been living in Louisiana with her husband who is in the U.S. Air Force and was visiting her mother when she was murdered.
Sherman's attorney, William Petrillo, reportedly said his client will be sentenced to 18 years to life in prison on June 11.

Man Sentenced to 18 Years in Strangling of Woman Near Long Island Park (Video)

A Long Island man will serve 18 years in prison after admitting he strangled and repeatedly beat an 18-year-old woman he met near a Nassau County park until she died.
Maxwell Sherman, of Long Beach, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty in April to a top charge of second-degree murder in the August 2013 death of Lauren Daverin-Gresham.
The young woman's partially clothed body was found on a footbridge, a popular gathering place for teenagers near a Rockville Centre Park. Prosecutors said Daverin-Gresham, of Lynbrook, had gone there to meet friends and encountered Sherman, who had recently returned to Long Island to stay at his parents house in Long Beach, there. They had never met before that night.
Sherman, 19, apologized to the victim's family at Thursday's sentencing hearing, reading a statement that said, in part, "I offer no excuses. I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart."
Daverin-Gresham's family said they doubted Sherman's confession was sincere. Her uncle, Luke McLaughlin, called Sherman "an animal who deserves to spend the rest of his life in a cage," and said the less-than-two-decade sentence was "a slap on the wrist."
Sherman's plea came as part of an agreement with prosecutors, who said the victim's family signed off on the resolution of the case. He could have been sentenced to 32 years to life if convicted at trial.

Man Gets 18 Years To Life In Murder Of Newlywed At Rockville Centre Park

Maxwell Sherman, Lauren Daverin (Nassau PD/Facebook)
MINEOLA, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — A Long Beach man who admitted strangling a teenager he met near a Long Island park was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison Thursday.
Maxwell Sherman, 20, pleaded guilty in April to murder and sexual abuse charges after the August 2013 death of 18-year-old newlywed Lauren Daverin-Gresham.
Sherman was sentenced Thursday in Nassau County court. And vowing to return to every parole hearing, Daverin-Gresham’s relatives called the sentence a slap on the wrist, CBS2’s Carolyn Gusoff reported.
Police and prosecutors said Sherman killed Daverin-Gresham after meeting her near a Rockville Centre park at Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway on Aug. 22.
Daverin-Gresham went to meet friends on a footbridge near the park that is a popular gathering place for teenagers. Her partially clothed body was later found on the footbridge.
“Because of the cold-blooded brutality of this crime, it is just that Maxwell Sherman pay a heavy price for tragically and inexplicably cutting Lauren Daverin’s life short,” Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas said. “It is my fervent hope that today’s sentence gives Lauren’s loved ones a small amount of closure and peace.”
