Gunman opens fire at Navy Yard in Washington; several wounded, officials say

A gunman opened fire Monday at a Navy facility in Washington, authorities said. An initial report said at least four people had been killed and eight wounded.

Naval officials said that the gunman was on the loose.

SWAT officers swarmed the facility, the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command at the Washington Navy Yard.

A naval security guard was among those shot and was hit in both legs, U.S. military officials said. Washington city police told WRC, the NBC affiliate in Washington, that one of their officers was also among those shot. It was not clear how many of the five others were civilian and how many were military.

Report: Ten people shot at Washington Navy Yard

WASHINGTON -- A "shelter-in-place" order was issued at the Navy Yard here after "several" people reportedly were shot Monday at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters, the Navy said.

Local media, including WUSA-TV, said up to 10 people were shot. Washington's Metropolitan Police Department reported that a suspect was on the loose in the building. The shooter was described as a black male with a dark complexion, approximately 5'10" to 6 feet tall, 170 pound with a black shirt and black hat. He is believed to be barricaded somewhere and have multiple guns.

Police were seeking as many as three gunmen on Monday morning in Washington, DC, after they apparently opened fire at the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command in Navy Yard, the shore facility of the U.S. Navy. Shots continued late into the morning as one gunman apparently barricaded himself inside a room in the building where the shooting took place. By 10:20 am EST, police reported that one of the gunmen was “down,” while two were still on the loose inside of the building.

NBC’s Washington affiliate reports that at least 10 were injured in the shooting, including a DC police officer and a base security officer. A defense official told AP that “several” people have been killed, while ABC reports the number at four.

4 Killed, 8 Injured at Washington Navy Yard

WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — At least four people are dead and eight more are injured after at least one gunman opened fire at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday morning in Southeast D.C.

The U.S. Navy says shots were fired at 8:20 a.m. Monday at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters building. D.C. police say at least 10 people have been shot, including one D.C. police officer and one base officer. CBS News reports that at least three and as many as six people have been fatally shot.

Authorities have reportedly described a suspect as a bald black male dressed in all black, possibly carrying an assault rifle and a double-barreled shotgun. Law enforcement officials believe a suspect is still in the building. Officials say the shooter is “contained” but not in custody.

WASHINGTON - A shooting rampage at a U.S. Navy command complex in Washington left at least 13 people dead Monday, including a Navy veteran identified as the gunman, authorities said.

Aaron Alexis, 34, a civilian contractor from Fort Worth, was identified by officials as a shooter killed by officers responding to the the morning attack. A military official said Alexis had been a Navy reservist on active duty before being discharged for misconduct.

The carnage and desperate efforts by responding officers to stop the shooting gripped the nation's capital city in a tense, day-long drama just miles from the U.S. Capitol and White House. Hours after reports that Alexis was dead, city officials said they had not entirely ruled out the possibility another shooter was involved.

Officials said at least three people were wounded in the gunfire inside building 197 at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters at Washington Navy Yard, including a law enforcement officer. Hospital officials said all three were expected to recover.

Hundreds of workers in the Navy complex were forced to hide in place or flee for safety while gunshots echoed from a gunman firing into the cafeteria and other parts of the building.
