MANHATTAN — The NYPD has cracked one of the city’s most notorious cold case murders — the killing of a child known only as “Baby Hope” whose body was found stuffed in a cooler 22 years ago, DNAinfo New York has learned.
Sources say detectives have located Baby Hope’s mother in Washington Heights and have confirmed her biological link to the slain 4-year-old girl through a DNA match.
The NYPD has now turned its focus on finding Baby Hope’s father who, sources say, ran off with the little girl and her older sister just months before Baby Hope’s body was found on July 23, 1991, according to the mother’s account.
The man, whose name is being withheld, is being sought as a person of interest in the girl’s death.
The break in the decades-old mystery unfolded last week when DNAInfo New York learned about the dramatic development.
A tipster — herself a mother in Washington Heights — reached out to the police and reported that she might know the identity and whereabouts of Baby Hope’s mother.

New York cops use DNA to ID mother of 'Baby Hope' in 22-year-old case
In a dramatic break in a cold case more than two decades-old, investigators have used DNA to identify a woman they believe is the mother of a dead child known only as Baby Hope, the New York Police Department said Tuesday. (Oct. 8)

October 8, 2013, 2:46 p.m.
She died without a name, so small her body barely filled a picnic cooler abandoned beside a highway. Officials called her Baby Hope, hoping it would be temporary, something to use until her real name came to light.
It took more than 22 years, but officials announced Tuesday that they had used DNA to identify the mother of the toddler.
“A DNA match was made with the mother, and the mother is cooperating,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters Tuesday, Associated Press reported.

The discovery by highway workers of a little girl, believed to be between three and five years old, tied with rope and squeezed into a picnic cooler beneath full cans of Coca-Cola struck a nerve with police and residents alike.
She had been malnourished and tests showed she had endured sexual abuse and she died of asphyxia. She was naked except for a hair-tie with yellow plastic baubles on it. She had black hair and was white, possibly Hispanic.
The child was badly decomposed, making her facial features unrecognizable, and no one came forward to claim her. No one had filed a missing persons report and there were very few clues.
Even for hardened New York City cops, the case was a sad and grisly one. Detectives named the girl 'Baby Hope', in the hope that someone would come forward and help them find out who she was and what happened to her.
Two years after her discovery, Baby Hope was buried in St Hamond's ceremony. The police of the 34th Precinct pooled their money and paid for her gravestone. She was buried in a white communion dress.

Defense Awaits Mental Health Report on ‘Baby Hope’ Accused Killer
Defense attorney for Conrado Juarez, accused of killing Anjelica Castillo 24 years ago, awaits psychiatric assessment
May 15, 2015 7:43 p.m. ET
TThe man accused of killing a 4-year-old girl known to authorities for more than two decades as “Baby Hope” is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation, his defense attorney said Friday.
Conrado Juarez, 54, was arrested in 2013 in the killing of Anjelica Castillo, which had haunted investigators for years. He appeared Friday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, handcuffed and wearing an orange jumpsuit.
Mr. Juarez, a cousin of Anjelica, told investigators during a videotaped confession in October 2013 that he raped, then smothered the girl with a pillow, authorities said.
He later pleaded not guilty to one count of murder in the second degree and is being held awaiting trial.
