Johnson was found dead in a gym at Lowndes County High School in Georgia. The original autopsy report ruled Johnson's death an accident, stating that the teen suffocated after getting stuck in a gym mat while reaching for a sneaker. However, Johnson's parents weren't convinced it was an accident, and they got a court order to have their son's body exhumed. The second autopsy report showed the teen's death was not an accident and introduced the possibility of foul play, stating that Johnson had sustained "non-accidental, blunt force trauma." And that wasn't all: The pathologist discovered even more horrific details.

But federal agent-turned private investigator Harold Copus believes something more sinister happened in the gym that day and his family are convinced the out-going teen was murdered.

Was Kendrick being scouted for scholarships?
Could a fellow student/parents of have felt he was a threat to another student getting a specific scholarship?
Have the "bullies" or gangs in the school been checked out?
Could this have involved more than one student, ie a few others, and what do the school personnel know of the bully/gang hierarchy in the school?
Was he asked to "throw" a competition and refused to do so?

This young man appears to be sober and intelligent in all the pics.
He does not appear to be "rowdy" or a trouble maker.
Someone intentionally did him in.
Did Kendrick know something about someone at the school and they threatened him with silence?

GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said Thursday that the agency's policy is to return all organs to bodies after autopsies. That's what happened in Johnson's case, she said.

"Those organs were in the body when we sent it back to the funeral home," said Lang, who added that the GBI stands by the conclusions of its autopsy that found no foul play involved.

But Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson said many of Johnson's organs were deemed too badly decomposed to be preserved and had to be disposed of before the body was sent to the funeral home. "It would've been during or immediately after the autopsy," he said.

Harrington Funeral Home in Valdosta, which handled Johnson's body, referred calls to attorney Roy Copeland. He said Johnson's organs were missing when the body arrived at Harrington. He also said standard embalming practice is to fill empty space in body cavities with material such as sawdust or cotton.

"Is newspaper necessarily more indicting that sawdust or cotton?" Copeland said.

Medical examiners commonly remove internal organs during forensic autopsies. After autopsies, those organs are typically sealed in a plastic bag and placed back in the body, said Vernie Fountain, who runs an embalming school in Springfield, Mo. When organs are missing, such as in cases involving organ donors, space inside the body cavity often is filled with an absorbent, preservative powder, Fountain said. Sometimes cotton is used with powder.

"I don't think I've ever talked to anyone who told me they've used old newspapers," Fountain said. "There may not be any law that prohibits it. I don't know. But it's just not something that's within what I would consider acceptable standards....."

I am curious as to the date and the publication name of the newspapers. That could lead to WHO placed them in the body.
IF the coroner had the body on say the first and the funeral home had the body on the second, and the newspapers were dated the second or after the first, they would then be the culprits. As for the missing organs: Due to most regional health codes, they organs would be kept with the body for health reasons, specially as they had begun to decay and putrefy.

Valdosta, GA - The Johnson family's lawyers have announced they will be suing the Lowndes County Sheriff and the Coroner.

Kendrick Johnson's grandmother said, "No matter what it is we want the truth to come out." Demanding the truth Kendrick Johnson's family has now filed lawsuits against both the Coroner of Lowndes County, Bill Watson and the Sheriff of the County Chris Prine saying they have a right to know how investigators determined Kendrick Johnson's death was an accident.

It goes against the law of common. The mat could have been easily turned over for Kendrick to reach his shoes. There would have been no need nor sense for him to crawl between a rolled up mat to retrieve anything.

I believe he was rolled up after death to hide the body for as long as possible. This is no accident.

Attorney Kings explains in the year 2011 Kendrick Johnson was involved in some sort of foul play with another young white male that attended the same school as Johnson. They got into an altercation or a fight and Johnson perhaps won the fight. The young white boy family then invites Johnson to their home to fight again but Johnson never came, no one has spoken to the family since. After that incident Kendrick was killed. This information was sent to the Sheriff department in Valdosta ga and is in the Sheriff’s investigative reports.

Attorney King gives us more insight on this investigation the young white boy parents are members of the law enforcement, his father is a police official and perhaps his mother is as well. So far no one has detected this information has any connection to Kendrick’s death but this is an alert for more investigation. Attorney King ask us as listeners’ to be proactive and fight for this case keep up with this story , please contact the Governor ‘s office.

FYI: I discussed this topic with my grandson, granddaughter, her boyfriend and his twin brother. They have all been wrestlers at school (Dakota, the girl, only one year however). They said there is no way Kendrick could have gotten out of that rolled mat by himself, if he fell in head first. Actually, they felt like he may have been hit over the head, knocked out, and then rolled up in the mat afterwards.

The BF actually said he and some other team mates rolled his brother up in a mat one time. Those mats are foam, and covered plastic. Before they even got the mat rolled up completely, brother was trying to tell them that he could not get his breathe, so they unrolled him.

My Dylan, said he didn't think Kendrick would have lasted very long in that mat before passing out from lack of oxygen, then death.

I certainly hope they keep investigating this case, especially after the latest info that has come out. Maybe this black kid was going to get a scholarship that the white boy's family thought he should get. And if they did anything to this black kid, and being law officers, I hope they throw the book at all of them.

Speaking with one of my sons who wrestled in hs.
He said the mats could easily suffocate someone IF they were jammed in head first. He said they used to horse around during class and periodically someone would get stuffed in. Classmates would haul the student out when they complained of not being able to breathe. Being upside down, in tight quarters, and surrounded by the plastic made it very conducive to not being able to breathe.

Despite this, I don't buy this being some sort of harmless prank or the student going head first into a rolled mat to retrieve his shoes.

I want to see what the OTHER THREE cameras recorded...
More details are emerging showing what the young man was encountering in his social life and I think that info is very valuable.

A judge ordered that the recordings be released after his parents had requested the action in an effort to learn more about how their son, Kendrick Johnson, died.

One part of the newly released footage shows Johnson walking into the gym and onto the basketball court where other people are playing. The publicly released video does not show Johnson's death or anything leading up to it. Hours of additional footage may came from cameras inside and outside the gym.

(CBS) MACON, Ga. - The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia announced Thursday that he is reopening the investigation into the death of Kendrick Johnson, a Georgia teen who was found dead inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school gym in January.

Federal prosecutor Michael Moore said he will conduct a "formal review" of Johnson's death with the help of the FBI. The announcement was made at a 1 p.m. news conference held at his office in Macon.

A judge agreed in May to exhume Johnson's body, and the teen's parents hired a private pathologist to provide a second opinion.

The pathologist discovered Johnson's organs were missing and newspaper had been used to fill the body cavity. He also concluded the teenager died from blunt force trauma near his carotid artery and that the fatal blow appeared to be non-accidental.

Benjamin Crump, the lawyer representing Johnson's family, told CBS News' Crimesider on Wednesday that the case is a "real-life murder mystery."

Also Thursday, lawyers for Johnson's family raised questions about apparent discrepancies in newly released surveillance images, including missing time codes, gaps and a mysteriously blurry and out-of-position camera that should have been pointed right at the spot where authorities found Johnson's body some 10 months ago.

CNN, which filed suit to secure access to the video, hired forensic video analyst Grant Fredericks to analyze more than 290 hours of material from all 35 cameras inside and outside of the gym. Fredericks is a U.S. Justice Department consultant and contract instructor for the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

CNN also provided Fredericks and his company, the Spokane, Washington-based Forensic Video Solutions, with hundreds more hours of video from 31 cameras in other parts of Lowndes County High School.

..."Those files are not original files," Fredericks said. "They're not something investigators should rely on for the truth of the video."

..."(The surveillance video has) been altered in a number of ways, primarily in image quality and likely in dropped information, information loss," he said. "There are also a number of files that are corrupted because they've not been processed correctly and they're not playable. I can't say why they were done that way, but they were not done correctly, and they were not done thoroughly. So we're missing information."

Two cameras in the gym are missing an hour and five minutes, their hiatus ending at 1:09, when Johnson enters the gym. Another pair of cameras are missing two hours and 10 minutes each. They don't begin recording again until 1:15 and 1:16, according to their time stamps.

UPDATE:
News is reporting the atty for the Johnson family is stating there is more than 1 1/2 hours of missing tape. Of the tape supplied, towards the middle, it appears other camera footage has been inserted that has NO time stamps on it unlike the bulk of the tapes given to them. When/if I can get documentation of statements, I will share.

IMO, these 4 teens in the hall are critical to determining the events.
When Kendrick walks past them, he seems to pull somewhat away, ie, makes himself smaller, as if he is uncomfortable near one of more of them. I have looked at a few of the released vids trying to see interaction between Kendrick and the "boys in red" but I have found nothing. Zip.

Parents of Kendrick Johnson to take fight to Georgia Capitol

ATLANTA — A local church community plans to take its fight for answers in a Valdosta teenager's mysterious death to the Capitol steps this week.

..."We are not making any accusations, we are not making any recriminations. We are calling for an investigation," Jaqueline Johnson said.

Kendrick's parents said few words and only made one request.

"So I'm asking everybody to stand with us as we fight this fight to the get the truth for my son," Jaqueline said.

The Johnson's and supporters will gather Wednesday on the steps of the state Capitol to make the plea to Gov. Nathan Deal for further investigation of this case.

ATLANTA - The family of Kendrick Johnson is asking for an investigation into the funeral home who handled their son's body.

...Paperwork filed on Tuesday with the Secretary of State asked that office to investigate what happened to Kendrick's missing organs, specifically targeting the funeral home that handled his body. They're also urging Gov. Nathan Deal to appoint an independent coroner as well as a new coroner's investigation to look into the evidence they say is missing from this case, such as Johnson's fingernails and his clothes. The family believes that these new probes will find their son's death was a murder that was covered up.

"Somebody knows what happened, and we're going to solve this murder mystery, one way or another," said Benjamin Crump, the family's attorney.

Kate Haygood, a spokeswoman with the Georgia Secretary of State’s office, confirmed to msnbc that the office received the complaint Tuesday and that an investigation into the funeral home began before the complaint was received.

An attorney for the funeral home told CBS that the organs had been removed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation before the funeral home accepted Johnson’s body because of decomposition. A spokesperson for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that in “every single autopsy [conducted at the GBI], the internal organs are returned to the body cavity.”

VALDOSTA, Ga., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- Surveillance videos from a Georgia high school where Kendrick Johnson was found dead have been subpoenaed in an ongoing investigation.

...U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia Michael Moore issued a subpoena for the school's original hard drives containing hundred of hours of surveillance footage.

Chevene King, the family's attorney, has questioned whether footage previously supplied by the school had been altered, alleging time codes weren't shown.

It was the morning of Jan. 11, 2013, at Lowndes High School, a sprawling campus attended by 3,000 students near the Georgia-Florida state line. Philip Pieplow's gym class was filling out a survey. Some students sat on the bleachers in the school gymnasium, while others climbed atop a cluster of 21 wrestling and cheerleading mats standing three-deep against a wall. The rolled-up mats stood just over 6 feet high, each measuring nearly 3 feet across. Soon students who had clambered on top of them began yelling for help. A pair of feet clad in socks could be seen inside the center hole of one mat.

"I reached (and) grabbed one of his ankles hoping for a response," Pieplow said in a written statement included in the investigative file on Kendrick's death. "There was none, and I knew he was lifeless at that point."

Students began calling 911 and, within minutes, police and paramedics arrived.

At the same time, Jacquelyn Johnson was at the school asking if her son had shown up for class, guidance counselor Dana Hutchinson later told investigators. Kendrick hadn't come home the night before.

The youngest of four children, Kendrick grew up in Valdosta, one of the largest cities in rural south Georgia. His grandmother affectionately called him her "peculiar grandchild," because he tended to be quieter than his brothers and sisters. Lowndes High School has dozens of security cameras watching over its hallways, entrances and parking lots. Four motion-activated cameras are posted in the gym where Kendrick was last spotted on Jan. 10, 2013. Surveillance footage shows him entering the gym shortly after 1 p.m. and walking toward the far corner where the mats were stored. (CNN) -- Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson still spend their days outside the Lowndes County Courthouse in Georgia, standing vigil for their son, Kendrick, whose mysterious death a year ago poses many questions in their minds.

..."They know something happened in that gym and they don't want it to come out," Kenneth Johnson said.

Federal authorities, too, have their doubts about the original investigation's findings. Crump and the family is also fighting for an independent coroner to examine the findings, thus allowing for a transparency that has yet to occur in the case. Crump believes that using the independent coroner’s investigation will allow the family to highlight the various inconsistencies they claim plague the case. There is also hope that with the independent survey of the case that the public will demand a full and impartial investigation in to the happenings without any political barriers.

The Johnson family has been blocked by the judge in the case regarding the coroner’s requests since the U.S. Attorney’s Office investigation began late last year. Crump, speaking on behalf of the family, said that the family just wants to see some manner of traction in the case and feels as if all parties on the other side have little cause to rush.

...Over the weekend, the family and supporters gathered in Valdosta for a memorial event for Kendrick Johnson. The “K.J. Memorial Rally” was attended by Sybrina Fulton, the Mother of Trayvon Martin, in a show of support of the Johnson family.

The family of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson of Valdosta filed a complaint with the Georgia Board of Funeral Service last year after newspaper was found in the place of his missing organs when the body was exhumed for a second autopsy. Johnson’s parents, who are fighting to have their son’s death declared a homicide after authorities concluded it was a freak accident, said they were outraged and found the funeral home’s use of newspapers to be disrespectful.

Attorneys for the Johnson family released a letter from the board saying it found Harrington Funeral Home broke no state law. However, the board also noted that using newspaper to fill a body cavity is not considered a “best practice” and that other materials are “more acceptable than newspaper,” The Valdosta Daily Times reported Saturday.

An attorney for the parents of a Valdosta teenager found dead inside a rolled up gym mat last January said state regulators missed the point when they concluded the funeral home that handled Kendrick Johnson’s body broke no laws when workers stuffed it with newspapers.

“It’s not that his organs were replaced with paper,” Johnson family co-counsel Chevene King told reporters Monday. “It’s that his organs were missing.”

Wouldn't the coroner or the ME have their reports of the description of the organs at the time the body was autopsied? Perhaps, photographs?

I must wonder if there was damage to any of the organs, ie, liver damage showing toxicity, kidney damage showing bruising caused by blows, ruptured throat, etc.

Of interest: IF the body had remained rolled up in this mat for a period of time, would there not have been body fluids leaking out on to the gym floor?

According to the article I posted above:

"It’s still unclear what happened to Johnson’s internal organs after the GBI autopsy. The GBI has said it returned the organs to the body before sending it to the funeral home. But the funeral home has said the organs were missing when the body arrived. Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson has said many of Johnson’s organs were deemed too badly decomposed to be preserved and had to be disposed of before the body was embalmed."

That picture of his face that was posted a few pages back (which still haunts me) showed horrifying decomposition, so I suppose what they said could be true, but I'm not sure I buy it. You said what I've been thinking; that they showed something that someone is trying to hide.
