TROLL/SPAM ALERT!

Someone is seriously spamming this site. Can someone delete the Troll/Spammer's profile?

I called fysty, and she is on her way home. She said she would get on it as soon as she gets home. Tasha had been to a Halloween Party and fysty went to pick her up. Tasha said she was out scaring ppl tonight, and I told her to tell fysty we have someone trying to scare us on RC. I told her it was a troll but didn't know there were so many different posts.

I'm sure it will be handled soon.

Hi CP,

I saw the nick on "who is online" and I found it "rather unusual", I even clicked on it to see when the "person" became a member, that was before all the spamming started.

This is not a single individual. It's a spamming program that likely originates outside of the U.S. We had this ongoing problem at Hinky, but had implemented some features to keep it off the main board. One temporary solution is to require all new accounts to be approved by admin for a few posts. Then they can be batch deleted and the IP blocked. (If the spammer is using a single static IP-- many use more sophisticated techniques.) I don't have the authority to implement post approval for new registrations. Hopefully J4A and Fysty will get it handled.

Twice in the past 24 hours, my anti-virus software has popped up a notice that it detected something but prevented it from doing any damage.  I didn't pay much attention at the time because I was busy doing other things, and have gone back to look for what it was, but can't find it in my anti-virus history.  I'm wondering if it has to do with all these spam postings; that going to one of the threads that had these spam postings is what caused the problem.  I never clicked on anything in these weird messages, but it's just odd that the timing coincides with when these messages appeared.  I'd highly suggest these posts/new threads get deleted ASAP, as there may be viruses embedded in them.

Thank you, CP.  I've been really worrying about this.  I've been watching my anit-virus software all day--it scanned but came back clean.

I haven't clicked on any of those spam messages, but I did visit two threads where they are.  I don't know why I did that.  

In my opinion, this is someone who is trying to sabotage this website. The IP address might show a location outside of the U.S. because whoever is doing the spamming is using a proxy.

Ok, I'm dusting off some of my old moderator tricks. Look for some spam threads to be locked, among other things. Will try to stop the bleeding and mayhem on the boards.  

Clean up on aisle 3!! Deleting spam advertising posts. Locked a few old threads.

Banned a few troll registrations, too.

It won't cure the problem, but I think the live fire has been neutralized, and the hemorrhaging on the threads has stopped for the time being!

Keep calm, and post on!  

Alert posts if the problem recurs. I'll get the email, and stop by to mop up a bit if necessary.

I'm unable to do anything with the "audimers" spam thread. My controls are disabled in this thread.

Sorry about this and thanks for your help KZ.  The spammers were already banned and I deleted any spam posts I could still find.  New users are set to admin approval.  We will probably have to start only approving people who contact us about their registrations not being approved and then watch them for the first sign of trouble.  

I can't be on much anymore because I now work full time at 4 in the morning and my wife and me had our third child back in June.  There isn't much time left with a new born son, two older daughters, and my full time job.  I recently upgraded to Windows 8 and am working on getting my RC email accounts set up in Outlook again so I can be alerted and respond more quickly when there is a major issue like this.  You can email me directly at justice4all@realitychatter.com and I will also have it set up to alert me of any new private messages.
