The mother of the 10-year-old girl who police say was abducted Tuesday said she is trying to stay strong — and positive.

“My nerves are shot,” Stacey Owens said, about two hours after Hailey Owens was allegedly yanked into a pickup truck while walking near her home in west Springfield.

A fourth-grader, Hailey Owens lives at 3360 W. Page St., a couple of blocks from where she was abducted, said Stacey Owens.

She said her daughter, a student at Westport Elementary, has a friend who lives on Lombard Street and was headed to her house when she was taken.

Shortly after the report of the abduction, about a handful of police were already on scene, some appearing to go door-to-door seeking information. As of late Tuesday evening, the case was referred to Criminal Investigation Division.

The suspect is described as a 45-year-old male, with gray hair and an unshaven face.

The suspect vehicle may have a second Missouri registration of 1YS454, along with 1YF454.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Springfield Police Department is looking for a suspect in connection with a child abduction.

According to Springfield Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Cox, police were dispatched to a child abduction call around 4:50 p.m. on W. Lombard.

Ten-year-old Hailey Owens was approached by an unknown person and pulled into his vehicle.

UPDATE: SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Springfield Police Department has located the suspect vehicle and suspect wanted in connection with the abduction of 10-year-old Hailey Owens.

According to a post on the Springfield Police Facebook page, the vehicle and suspect were located at a residence in south Springfield, however Hailey Owens remains missing.

The suspect has been booked on kidnapping charges.

A command post has been set up at National and Bennett in Springfield with 30-40 officers searching for the girl.  

According to the post, police will continue to search throughout the night, or until Hailey is found.

Following this on the the TV news this morning.
Major points:

Craig Michael Wood, arrested and booked for murder last night.
He was apprehended sitting in the above described truck at @ 8 PM last night.

Crime scene was established near/at at Stranford location in Springfield, MO at @ midnight last night. Hailey had been abducted near the Lombard location .

Of interest:
Every police officer who was off duty was asked to report to assist in the search for this little girl. While she was reportedly kidnapped at 4:48, the witness who called in it had first hand info re the vehicle color and even had the license plate number. Police had responded to the crime scene by 5 PM.... within 12 minutes.

Williams held a briefing for reporters at 6:30 this morning at the police command post at National and Bennett.

Williams says officers, acting on a tip, found the suspect's vehicle at a house in the 1500 block of E. Stanford. The man was taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Officers, searching the property on Stanford, found evidence of foul play, Williams said.

Williams identified the suspect in custody as Craig Michael Wood. Online jail records say Wood was booked into the jail on charges of 1st degree murder.

About 30 officers spent the night collecting evidence at the house on Stanford and the crime scene processing will continue today, Williams said.

Police say Hailey was walking near her home in the 3200 block of West Lombard about 4:50 p.m. when a white male - possibly in a gold Ford Ranger pickup- grabbed her and took her.
They say they believe the abduction was random and do not believe Hailey was familiar with the man. A multi-state Amber Alert was issued about 7pm.

Wood has a criminal record. According to online court records, he pleaded guilty in 1990 for possession of a controlled substance and was given a suspended execution of his sentence after completing court-ordered drug counseling programs

What a tragedy. This reminds me of the Some Thompson case (FL). Somer was murdered within hours after being lured by the guy who murdered her.

They did, however, identify the suspect as Craig Michael Wood, a 45-year-old white male.

A 45-year-old man is charged for the kidnapping and murder of a 10-year-old girl on Tuesday night.   Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson said late Wednesday afternoon that he charged Craig Wood with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and armed criminal action.  Springfield police say a body found during the night at Wood's home likely belonged to the abducted girl, Hailey Owens.  Police know of no connection between Wood and Hailey.

The probable cause statement against Wood says girl appeared to be shot at the base of her skull.  There were also ligature marks on Owens' arms.  Crime scene technicians found her body in a tote box in the basement of  Wood's home, concealed inside two trash bags.   The technicians "confirmed it was the body" of Hailey.   They also found a spent .22-caliber shell casing in the basement.

“(The suspect) was on a mission to find a girl and it just so happened he found my girl,” Erin Petersen said of her niece, Hailey Owens, who was abducted and killed Tuesday night.

Tears filled Petersen’s eyes as she remembered the 10-year-old who loved to play in the dirt, but also loved to dress up and wear sequins.

“She was an absolute ray of sunshine. She loved hugs and kisses,” she said. “She loved babies, she loved animals, she loved to be outside.”

The last image most of Hailey Owens’ classmates will have of her is of a smiling, laughing girl dancing at Friday’s Valentine party.

After the treats and the passing out of holiday cards, Hailey’s fourth-grade teacher put on some music. And the parent helpers — including Hailey’s mother — got to see the kids go at it.

“They got to shake their groove thing, and Hailey was in the midst of it all,” said Gary Tew, principal of Westport Elementary School in Springfield. “That’s what the kids are going to remember about her. And her mom got to see her in that light, too.”

Days after that party, and after news hit Tuesday night that 10-year-old Hailey had been abducted near her home, students learned that their outgoing friend — the girl known to help kindergartners hang up their coats in the morning — had been murdered.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A middle-school football coach charged with killing a 10-year-old Springfield girl is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Friday.

Craig Michael Wood's arraignment was initially scheduled for Thursday but postponed a day. Wood, 45, was charged on Wednesday with first-degree murder, kidnapping and armed criminal action in the shooting death of fourth-grader Hailey Owens.

Interviews with friends and acquaintances of the man accused of abducting and slaying a Springfield girl are beginning to answer the question: Who is Craig Michael Wood?

The acquaintances and friends speak of an elementary school teaching assistant, a coach of boys’ sports and avid deer hunter, who never married or had children.

They also unanimously report no clues that the 45-year-old Springfield man would hurt anyone.

Video arraignment planned

Wood will be arraigned in court Friday, but he won’t appear in person. The family has hired Joe Passanise of the Law Offices of Dee Wampler and Joe Passanise.

The criminal case against Wood has been assigned to Judge Dan Imhof’s courtroom, and Wood is scheduled to appear by video for his arraignment. Wood is charged with first-degree murder, child kidnapping and armed criminal action.

Before that arraignment, and after, Wood will remain in jail. A judge agreed with prosecutors’ recommendation that Wood be held without bond.
