BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A former Summerville jewelry store owner has been charged in the death of his wife, according to an affidavit.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged Michael Colucci with murder, believing he is responsible in the May 2015 death of Sara Moore-Colucci.
An affidavit states police found Moore-Colucci dead of an apparent strangulation outside of a building on the 2200 block of North Main Street on May 20, 2015.
The suspect said she hanged herself with a garden hose, but medical evidence collected from the scene that night proved that wasn't true, according to the affidavit, and indicates there may have been a struggle.
Donnie Barfield is a former neighbor of the couple.
"I knew it was coming, just when, that was the biggest thing," Barfield said.
Initial investigation found that the victim and Colucci went to the building together that day. There were no witnesses on scene.
According to an incident report, deputies found Moore-Colucci laying on her back on a concrete slab.

Wednesday, May 4, 2016
Michael F. Colucci, 46, of 400 Murray Boulevard, was arrested early Wednesday morning, according to SLED spokesman Thom Berry.
He once owned Colucci’s Jewelers on North Main Street in Summerville.
An affidavit in the case said Berkeley County Sheriff’s deputies responded May 20 to a gas station at 2206 N. Main St. in Summerville in reference to an unresponsive woman, later identified as Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci. Her body was found outside the building. The victim appeared to have died from strangulation from a garden hose, according to the affidavit. No witnesses observed the alleged incident, authorities said.
The suspect initially told authorities his wife used the hose to hang herself while he was seated in his vehicle 20 feet away, but further investigation and evidence revealed a struggle ensued prior to her death, according to the affidavit, which was sworn out Tuesday.

Michael Colucci faces a minimum of 30 years in prison or death, if convicted, according to a SLED press release.

Moncks Corner — A former Summerville jeweler suspected of strangling his wife kept changing his account of her death when her family members asked him about it, one of the relatives said Thursday.
The comments came during a bond hearing for Michael J. Colucci, 46. He was arrested Wednesday on a murder charge about a year after he told authorities he found his 38-year-old wife, Sara, hanged with a garden hose.

James Moore, Sara Colucci’s father, said the suspect and two children came to live with him after his daughter’s death.
“My wife asked Michael on more than one occasion ... please tell me what happened,” he said. “The second time she would ask, (his account) would change a little.
“The entire thing is one horrendous mess. Michael has no earthly idea what it is he has done.”
