CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A two-year-old reported missing from a shelter in north Charlotte has been located, according to police.

The CMPD as well as other agencies spent hours combing the area in north Charlotte. The police helicopter was used to search from the air, while Bloodhounds tracked from the ground, all to try and find the missing toddler, to no avail.

Caretakers thought Shakia Billips went missing from the Salvation Army women's shelter located at 534 Spratt St about 7:25 pm Thursday evening.

That turned out to be false.

Police say she was actually at a daycare the entire time. An employee, who was responsible for driving her to the shelter, told officers he dropped her off earlier that night, when in actuality, she was still back at the daycare.

Employees saw the news coverage of the missing girl, realized she was still at the daycare, and called police.

Officers picked up the toddler, and she was reunited with her mother late Thursday night.

Who was supposed to be responsible for this baby? She was actually left @ daycare after it was closed and everyone had left. When daycare ppl heard the news, they went back to the daycare and found her. If someone was to pick her up and deliver her to the shelter, who was she supposed to be handed over to???? Surely not just dropped off at the door??? Does she have a mother???? This is very upsetting as the driver said he DID drop her off at the shelter, when in fact he had not.

I agree Mama, I hope those questions are being answered by the responsible parties! Why would the driver say he dropped her off? And just what time does the daycare close, generally it's around 6pm. Where is her mother?

According to the 11pm news out of Charlotte, the daycare did close a little after 6pm, with the baby still there. When they saw the 10pm news, they went back to the daycare and found her, calling the police at that time.

Reporter said there was an ongoing investigation of the daycare, but said she was reunited with her mom, but they didn't mention the mom further. The driver who claimed he dropped her off at the shelter is also being investigated.
