Police: Father, stepmother responsible for deaths of Alabama children

(CNN) -- Police in Mobile, Alabama, said Sunday they are "actively searching" for the bodies of two young children believed killed by their father and stepmother.

Authorities began investigating a missing persons report on Jonathan DeBlase, 3, and his older sister Natalie, 4, on November 19. However, the children have not been seen since late June, said Officer Christopher Levy, spokesman for Mobile police.

The children's father, John Joseph DeBlase, 27, was arrested Friday. He faces two counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of abuse of a corpse, Mobile police said in a statement. Stepmother Heather Keaton was arrested earlier in Louisville, Kentucky, and faces two counts of willful abuse and neglect of a child, police said.

Keaton went to police in Kentucky and asked for a restraining order against DeBlase. The couple had been living in Louisville, Kentucky, but had apparently separated, Levy said.

According to police documents from Louisville, Keaton told investigators she felt DeBlase "may have murdered his children because he said that they were nonresponsive," CNN affiliate WKRG reported. She said DeBlase had told her "choices were made ... and he had to do what he had to do."

Keaton told police she feared for her own life because of events that took place six months prior in Mobile, Levy said. "When she was explaining why she needed this emergency order of protection from him ... it was told to them (investigators) that the kids were dead and it had occurred in Mobile."

WKRG said Keaton approached authorities November 18. Levy said police were notified and began investigating a day later.

Keaton, identified as Heather Leavell-Keaton by WKRG, was arrested Tuesday night, and police began looking for DeBlase.

On Friday, Mobile police were notified by the Santa Rosa County, Florida, Sheriff's Department that DeBlase had been found, police said. He was returned to Mobile.

"Detectives have determined that both John DeBlase and Heather Keaton are responsible" for the children's deaths, the Mobile police statement said. "Police will continue to search for the children."

Police: Alabama toddler, now presumed dead, was last seen in March

(CNN) -- The search for a 3-year-old Alabama boy began just weeks ago, but police now say that no one had seen him since March -- around when, they believe, he was killed by one or two of his parents.

John Joseph DeBlase, Heather Keaton and Natalie -- the father, stepmother and 4-year-old sister, respectively, of Jonathan DeBlase -- continued to live in Mobile's Peach Place apartments for months after the boy's presumed death, Mobile police Officer Christopher Levy said Monday.

They didn't leave until the summer, after Natalie was last spotted in June -- when police now think she was killed, according to Levy. Still, the search for the two children, whose bodies haven't been found, didn't begin until November 19.

"It's really terrible, as if nobody really cared," Levy said of the time that transpired between the sightings and launch of the search. "That's what we can't seem to understand at this point."

This weekend, authorities started looking in a rural 12-mile swath in southeastern Mississippi, about one hour's drive from Mobile.

"They think that somehow, maybe, one of the children may have been brought here and dumped," said Jackson County, Mississippi, Sheriff Mike Byrd. "But we're not really sure where to look."

Byrd said that he believes that John DeBlase wanted to bury one of the children with a shovel, but tossed the body instead because the ground was too hard. Searchers, some with cadaver dogs, have looked on the sides of nearby roads and in a wooded area.

VANCLEAVE, Miss. (WALA) - Mobile police say a body, believed to be that of Chase Deblase, has been found in a wooded area around 12 miles north of Vancleave, Mississippi.

Officials say they will have to wait for forensic evidence to be examined before they make a 100 percent identification. However, the remains were found in the area where Chase's body was believed to be placed.

Police say they will now focus their efforts to an area in Citronelle, where they believe Chase's sister Natalie's remains may be.

VANCLEAVE, Miss. - Police say the father of two missing Alabama children will be charged with murder.

Mobile Police Officer Chris Levy said Wednesday that the discovery of remains believed to be the man's 3-year-old son gives authorities enough evidence to file two murder charges against John DeBlase.

A boy's bones were found in rural Mississippi earlier in the day. DeBlase has told police he also disposed of his 5-year-old daughter's body in a different location. Her remains haven't been found.

After the discovery of the remains, prosecutors gave police approval to prepare the charges against DeBlase.

The children's stepmother is being held in Kentucky on child abuse charges in the case. Levy said police aren't ready yet to prepare charges that she killed either of the children.

Reached Wednesday, DeBlase's father, Richard, said he had no comment on the grim discovery.

"We're doing all right," he said.

The children's biological mother, Corrine DeBlase Heathcock, was "devastated" by the news Wednesday, said Rob Willmann, her pastor and a family spokesman.

In a statement released by Willmann, Heathcock called Chase "a little gentleman" and said Natalie "loved everyone she came in contact with."

"I love my children, and I will remember to the day that I die their laughter, love, and smiles," said Heathcock, who was divorced from DeBlase.

Leavell-Keaton's mother, Helena Keaton, said Wednesday after the body was discovered that the whole situation is "horrid."

"It pains me for these little kids," Keaton told The Associated Press. "There is nothing they could have done to deserve this, and to be cast away like this."

DeBlase was arraigned earlier Wednesday on the lesser charges. A judge set a preliminary hearing for Jan. 4. DeBlase's newly appointed lawyer, Jim Sears, said Wednesday he had only spoken briefly with his client and declined to comment on the discussion.

"He's considered innocent and we'll take it from there," Sears said.

Levy said witnesses have told authorities both suspects beat the kids on numerous occasions.

"We have some incidents where people observed them striking the children with objects," Levy said, adding investigators are disturbed no one came forward sooner. "The children had some injuries that warranted medical attention which they never properly received."

DeBlase and Leavell-Keaton had been together since 2008, but they were not legally married. The couple met on the website MySpace while DeBlase and his children were living with his parents and Leavell-Keaton was attending nearby Spring Hill College in Mobile.

Her mother said her daughter was legally blind and dependent on DeBlase.

"She does not know really what happened to the kids. We suspect he poisoned them," Keaton told the AP before the discovery of the boy's bones.

"They had the same symptoms. They were not eating, they were not drinking. They were beginning to use the bathroom on themselves although they were potty trained," she said. "John would not take those children to get medical care."

In the spring, Keaton said, DeBlase forced Leavell-Keaton to go on a long ride. DeBlase finally stopped and got something out of the vehicle, Keaton said, but Leavell-Keaton — who was pregnant at the time with DeBlase's third child — was unsure what it was.

Keaton described DeBlase as a controlling, "habitual liar."

"She has tried to get away from John before, and he has tracked her down," Keaton said.

The couple moved to Kentucky without the children this summer, and Leavell-Keaton had DeBlase's child in August.

DeBlase's parents gave a very different account in an interview before the bones were found. They say Leavell-Keaton controlled the relationship, wouldn't allow DeBlase to take his children to church and forced him to move out of their home with the kids.

The grandparents last saw the children in February when they tracked down their son and Leavell-Keaton at a trailer park in the rural Alabama town of Citronelle.

They told the AP they suspect Leavell-Keaton killed the kids during a fit of rage while DeBlase attended night classes to become a personal trainer, then manipulated him into getting rid of the bodies.

Still, they're not excusing their son.

"I can't believe John is responsible for this, but I know he could have prevented it," Deblase's mother, Dorothy, said. "But if Heather told him to go jump off a bridge, he would go jump in a river."

The warrants show Natalie was murdered first, then little Chase. They've been reporting that Chase hadn't been seen since March 1st.

And how?
Since their deaths, Mobile Police have interviewed people who knew the children and arrived at a shocking conclusion.
Officer Christopher Levy with the Mobile Police Department said, "We see this whole incident as preventable."
Why?
No one spoke up about what they had seen.
Levy said, "Now, we have a number of people that are coming forward, and they're giving accounts of abuse, and times when they saw the children with injuries, and burns, and all these things."

Pat Guyton with the Child Advocacy Center said, "If someone had intervened and made a report, these children's lives may have been saved."
And Guyton said that's disheartening and disturbing.



Not a soul on this earth cared about these two children, not one...... I know the grandparents took care of them for quite awhile and lost contact with their son. Everyone that was around them knew that Natalie and Chase were being severely abused.....and did nothing. No one was even looking for them........

Thanks Piper. I have a real problem with this. A year is a long time to not have contact with your "babies". Has she been unemployed this whole time with no where to live? There wasn't one relative or friend willing to help her? It seems she felt that Monsterman hit the children inappropiately when they were together, why wouldn't she do everything/anything to protect them? Couldn't she have gone to some kind of agency like legal aid or something? Perhaps I'm judging her too harshly but I'm damn sick of hearing about all these children being murdered by a parent or parents.

These two innocents could have been saved, and should have been saved. It isn't right, that their abuse was seen, continued to happen and went unreported. Two little darlings who would have made someone's life complete, with them to love.
I hope the father and his G/F both get charged. The father looks like a POS, as does his G/F. And to think these two produced a third child is additionally appalling.

Alabama Authorities Find Remains of Murdered Girl

Police: New charges for girlfriend of father arrested in kids' deaths

(CNN) -- Police have ratcheted up charges against the girlfriend of an Alabama father, days after searchers found fragmented remains they say are of the second of the man's young children, tossed along the side of a remote highway.

Mobile, Alabama, police spokesman Christopher Levy said Monday that Heather Keaton would be charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse and two counts of abuse of a corpse -- one count each for the deaths of Jonathan DeBlase, 3, and his sister Natalie, 4.

The children's father, John Joseph DeBlase, 27, was arrested December 3 and is now charged with two counts of murder and two counts of abuse of a corpse.

John DeBlase's lawyer, Jim Sears, said Monday that his client maintains "his innocence in regards to the death of the children." Sears added that DeBlase might consider pleading not guilty by reason of disease or mental defect (equivalent to an insanity plea in other jurisdictions).

MOBILE, Alabama - A 22-year-old woman is being held in Alabama on $206,000 bond after pleading not guilty to charges of abusing her common-law husband's two young children, whose bodies were dumped in woods.

An attorney entered the plea for Heather Leavell-Keaton at a bond hearing Tuesday in Mobile. She had been brought back to Alabama from Kentucky.

At least I dont believe them yet. I doubt that she inflicted the discipline directly... but she sure must have known what was going on.... Her own sick mind allowed her stay with this monster and not reach out for help, when the kids cud have been saved. Coming forward so many months later only for her own selfish reasons, only show that she still chose to put her self first over these 2 angels lives. She allowed her own insecurities to drive her, and the lives of innocent children.

The detective said Russell learned the couple first poisoned their dog with antifreeze "to find out how long it would take to kill a living thing." Then they started giving antifreeze to the children, who got progressively sicker.

Natalie died March 4, 2010, and they dumped her body, the detective said. They stopped poisoning Chase for a few months but started back because he began crying and asking for his sister in front of others, she testified.

Chase died June 20. On the way to dump his body in Mississippi, they stopped at a video game store to buy two games because they no longer had the responsibilities of the children, the detective said.

Antifreeze Poisoning Symptoms

The initial antifreeze poisoning symptoms are like those that one has when one is intoxicated. These are commonly nausea, vomiting, dizziness and uncoordinated movements. In fact, antifreeze poisoning proceeds through three stages with each stages having certain specific symptoms. The three stages and their symptoms are:

Stage One: Neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms start showing within half an hour to 12 hours of ingestion of antifreeze. These include dizziness, nausea, confusion, headache, slurred speech, convulsions, fatigue, stupor and vomiting. These antifreeze poisoning symptoms in humans start showing while ethylene glycol is being broken down into its toxic components. Some may even pass into coma.

Stage Two: Antifreeze poisoning enters its second stage within 12 to 24 hours of antifreeze consumption. Increased heart rate, high blood pressure and muscle spasms occur during this time. In case of serious poisoning, severe metabolic acidosis takes place which is accompanied with hyperventilation and multiple organ failure. If adequate antifreeze poisoning treatment is not made available to the victim, he may also die at this stage.

Stage Three: Within 24 hours to 72 hours of ethylene glycol ingestion, the toxic metabolites attack the kidneys. This stage is characterized by decreased or no production of urine, presence of red blood cells (blood) in urine, lower back pain and acute kidney failure.

Antifreeze Poisoning In Dogs and Cats

Antifreeze poisoning in cats and dogs gets a separate mention because cases of antifreeze poisoning is more common in animals than in human beings. Progression of toxicity of ethylene glycol is almost the same in animals and human beings and so are the symptoms. However, there are some typical signs that most dog owners have reported as antifreeze poisoning symptoms in dogs and cats. Initial symptoms are those of alcohol intoxication. They may stagger, appear depressed and have seizures in the first couple of hours. Poisoned animals also drink lots of water and urinate excessively. Although they may appear to be better after they have passed this stage, conditions of cats after one day and that of dogs after two days start deteriorating. They may develop diarrhea, mouth ulcer and weakness. Some signs of kidney failure like depression and vomiting become evident. They either don't pass any urine or the amount decreases drastically.

Blood and urine tests are done by veterinarians to determine the level of poisoning. In case, the animal has been taken to the vet within a few hours of having consumed the liquid, then the vet may induce vomiting and place charcoal in the stomach to bind antifreeze in the intestine. The pet may also be prescribed drugs that prevent liver from breaking ethylene glycol to its toxic components. Dialysis has to be performed in case the kidney has been affected by the poisonous metabolites of ethylene glycol.

Be it human beings or animals, it is best to get medical help at the earliest after antifreeze ingestion is suspected. An individual has the best chance of recovering from antifreeze poisoning if he gets medical help before ethylene glycol is broken into its toxic metabolites. If too much delay is made in getting treatment, it can result in death of an individual.

The couple bought gallons of antifreeze at Walmart, the detective said, and they cooked their own meals separately from the children's meals.

John DeBlase would pour the antifreeze into a cup, and Leavell-Keaton then added it to the children's food, the detective said.

Both children slowly got more sick, including vomiting and other signs of organ failure.



Natalie died on March 4 after she was placed in a bathtub, Prine said, and they dumped her body near Citronelle.

For a few months, they stopped poisoning Chase for a few months, but decided that he would be a "liability" after he started crying and asking for his missing sister in front of other people, according to testimony.


On June 20, Chase got very sick and died, Prine said.


On the way to dump his body in Mississippi, Keaton said she and John DeBlase stopped at a video game store to buy two games because they didn't have any more responsibilities, according to the detective.

Prine said that the stepmother also recounted several incidents of torture and abuse the children suffered.


Keaton was jealous of Natalie, according to the detective, and she burned her with cigarettes and hot candle wax, pulled out her hair in clumps, and beat her with a fly swatter.

On the day she died, Natalie was locked inside a suitcase, which was sitting in their kitchen as her father cooked, according to the detective.


John DeBlase faces two counts of felony murder and two counts of abuse of a corpse in connection with his children's deaths.


Keaton's defense attorney, Richard Horne, attempted to call DeBlase to the witness stand to testify in the hearing. DeBlase briefly appeared in court, but he invoked his constitutional right to remain silent.

Psychologists Find Keaton, Deblase Competent to Stand Trial

(MOBILE, Ala.) - A couple accused of heinous crimes is competent to stand trial. That's what psychologists found after evaluating both Heather Keaton and John DeBlase.

Both are accused of murdering his children Natalie and Chase and dumping their bodies in wooded areas. Keaton and DeBlase have pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Investigators say the couple poisoned the children with antifreeze.

How is it that a group of strangers, US, are more emotionally vested in the torture these two children endured, the horrid life they endured, and the the disusting disposal of their bodies, than these two scumbags, you know, the two who purchased video games in celebration of being relieved of responsibility of caring and loving these two precious children.

They need tomake an example of these two. Sounds like the family has been making excuses for the father blaming it on the woman. How did he even wind up with these children?

Deblase trial delayed for third time

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Thursday a Mobile County judge granted the defense another delay in the Deblase murder case.

John Deblase and his common law wife Heather Keaton are accused of torturing and killing Deblase’s two young children, Chase and Jonathan Deblase.

This is such a terrible case. I am totally reviled by the so called "adults" in charge of these two precious little ones. God help our society for monsters walk among us.

Per the article below, the John DeBlase trial is scheduled to start on Tuesday, 6/4/13. However, I will post another article that indicates the trial has been delayed again and will be the second half of October or first half of November, 2013.

There have been many delays in this case. Hopefully, it will go to trial this year . . . 2013!

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A high-profile local capital murder case has been delayed again until June 4, 2013.

This latest delay, pushing the trial date back from its April 1 start date, marks the fifth in the capital murder trial.

MOBILE, Alabama – A judge today reluctantly agreed to delay – for the seventh time – the trial of a man accused of poisoning his two young children to death.

Attorneys for John DeBlase asked for the latest postponement to give them time to hire a new “mitigation specialist” to help persuade a jury to spare the defendant’s life should a jury find him guilty of capital murder. Attorneys said they were dissatisfied with the previous consultant they had retained.

Mobile County Circuit Judge Rick Stout said he had no choice but to push back the trial, which had been scheduled for June. The new trial date will be in the second half of October or first half of November to accommodate the schedule of the new consultant, the judge said.

John DeBlase sentenced to death by lethal injection

MOBILE, AL (WALA) - A Mobile father convicted of killing his two children will face his sentencing hearing Thursday, January 8.

Exactly two months ago a jury recommended John DeBlase be put to death upon his conviction.

DeBlase was found guilty for killing his two young children, three-year-old Jonathan Chase and four-year-old Natalie.

DeBlase's defense attorney argued against the death penalty, citing the convicted killer had no criminal history prior to this crime.

Regardless, the judge said because the evidence proved that the children had clearly been abused and tortured leading up to their death, he agreed with the jury's recommendation for the death penalty.

Heather Keaton found guilty in deaths of Jonathan, Natalie Deblase

MOBILE, AL (WALA) -

After seven hours of deliberations, a jury returned a guilty verdict against Heather Keaton Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Keaton is charged with three counts of capital murder in the deaths of her step children, Natalie and Jonathan Chase DeBlase. The third count is for murder of two or more individuals in the same course of conduct.

Keaton has been found guilty on one count of capital murder of the three she faced in the deaths of the two children. That verdict came down about 2:30 p.m. Keaton was found guilty of capital murder in the death of Jonathan Chase DeBlase, but not guilty for Natalie's. Instead, the jury found her guilty of manslaughter in that case. The jury also found her not guilty on the third capital murder count.
