FAIRFIELD — Caring, thoughtful, motivated and talented are just some of the words mentioned by friends and family describing Katelyn Markham.

More than 75 family, friends and concerned residents conducted a candlelight vigil Saturday evening, walking from the Fairfield Patterson Place shopping plaza on Patterson Drive to the city’s police and fire department memorial on Pleasant Avenue to encourage people not to forgot Markham. She was last seen Aug. 13 at her Dorshire Drive townhouse, but authorities say there was no evidence of a crime.

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - Several dozen friends and family of Katelyn Markham braved the chilly temperatures to hold a candle light vigil for the missing woman.

Katelyn was last seen by her boyfriend on Aug. 13, and investigators say there is no evidence of a crime.

The Saturday night vigil is just the latest in a series of events held to bring public attention to Katelyn disappearance and to keep hope alive among her family and friends. Mason Lenus says he expects Katelyn to come home. "The hope is that she will pop up. She's hopefully somewhere in hiatus right now and she'll come up out of nowhere," said Lenus.

Jeff Ruby Adds $25,000 To Reward in Missing Woman Case

A Cincinnati restaurateur is dramatically increasing the reward money for information leading to clues in the disappearance of missing Fairfield woman Katelyn Markham. Today, Jeff Ruby announced he is adding $25,000 to the reward pot... making the total reward amount $50,000.

Markham vanished from her Fairfield apartment last August. We are just days away from the six month anniversary. Markham was last at her apartment by her fiancee. After she vanished her car was still at her home along with her dog, purse and keys. Her cell phone was gone with the GPS locator turned off.

Despite several searches... some led by friends and even some led by a professional group brought in from Texas, there are still no signs of of the 22-year-old art student. Ruby was involved in a few of the searches and even opened his wallet to feed the volunteers.

Katelyn Markham disappeared from her townhome last fall and hasn't been seen since, despite searches by friends, family, police and professional search teams.

Gurpreet Kang, 26, of Hamilton, was arrested in Michigan earlier this month in connection with a reported sexual assault in Oxford last spring.

News 5's Karin Johnson talked with neighbors Wednesday who said Kang lived across the street from Markham at one time. The apartment building owner said Kang's family rented the apartment, but Kang's name was not on the lease. New tenants moved in in June 2011, the owner said.

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - Fairfield Police are investigating a link between a man who was arrested for a rape at Miami University and missing Fairfield woman Katelyn Markham.

Gurpreet Kang, 26, of Hamilton, is being held at the Butler County Jail on a $250,000 bond for sexual battery. According to the Dayton Daily News, Kang was arrested two weeks ago in Wayne County, Mich. for raping a Miami University student in April of 2011.

FAIRFIELD, Oh. - A Butler Co. man mentioned in a missing person case has been indicted in a separate incident.

Gurpreet Kang, who police have said could be connected to the disappearance of Katelyn Markham, has been indicted on one charge of sexual battery involving the assault of a woman in Oxford.

Kang lived and worked at a convenience store directly across from the home of Markham, who disappeared 11 months ago, leading police to investigate whether there was a connection. Police have not speculated recently on any possible connection.

The Fairfield police say newly indicted Gurpreet Kang’s connection to the Katelyn Markham disappearance was “tenuous at best” from the beginning and he is not a person of interest in their case.

Kang, 26, of Fairfield, was identified as a possible person of interest in the nearly year-old case of the missing Fairfield woman, after he was arrested in June and charged with sexual battery. A Butler County grand jury indicted him this week for the sex crime that allegedly occurred over a year ago. Fairfield Police Chief Mike Dickey said Kang is not a suspect in the Markham case.

Indiana police confirm remains are Markham's

UPDATED 8:35 PM EDT Apr 10, 2013






The remains of the 21-year-old were found on Big Cedar Road near Cedar Grove, Ind., on Sunday.

Markham went missing from her Fairfield home in August 2011.

The Hamilton County Coroner's officer was asked to help identify the remains.

The identity of the remains was positively confirmed Wednesday night.

Thank you for the update. I know how closely you followed this case as it unfolded.

I am glad that Katelyn's remains have finally been found. Now her family can bring her home and lay her to rest. Perhaps they will have some type of closure. It must be terrible to have a child missing.

Piper, does it surprise you that her remains were found in Indiana? Is the area close to the state line? I guess I could google it. However, I am too tired to do it now.

Ann, it does not suprise me at all that Katelyn was found in Indiana. It's about a 40 minute drive from her condo in Fairfield, OH. Cedar Grove, IN is out in the boonies across the state line. It's right before you get to Brookville Lake, a popular boating and camping site for those of us in this area.

I've about forgotten how to post pictures

My heart breaks for her family, but at least they can now bring her home. Now if we can just find Lauren Spierer and Paige Johnson. When they announced that remains were found in that area, I immediately thought of Lauren and Katelyn. I am anxious to see what the coroner's results will be. RIP Katelyn

Police: Items recovered from area where woman’s body found

Several items were taken from an Indiana creek bed where Katelyn Markham’s body was found, but how pertinent they will be to the case remains to be determined.

“It is a dumping ground … there was a lot of junk around,” said Sgt. Noel Houze of the Indiana State Police.

The skeletal remains of Markham, who had been missing since Aug. 14, 2011, from her Fairfield townhouse, were found Sunday morning in Cedar Grove, Ind., by men searching for metal to scrap, Houze said.

He would not comment whether jewelry, clothing or personal items were found with Markham.

“Most of the skeletal remains were there,” Houze said. Cedar Grove is about 30 miles west of Fairfield.

Houze said investigators are working to determine if Markham died where she was found.

Over the course of nearly two years, thousands of people contributed in the search for the missing 22-year-old woman, through volunteering their efforts on foot, printing fliers, making financial contributions and more.

The founder and director of Texas EquuSearch, Tim Miller, arrived in the Tri-State in September 2011 to organize a massive search for Markham.

Dave Rader, executive director of the Ohio chapter of Texas Equusearch, spoke with Katelyn's father on Wednesday.

"He wasn't doing so well, as you can imagine. His mindset was, he was all over the place, as expected. I think he was relieved, that he now has Katelyn, he knows where she is," said Rader. Fairfield - The “Missing Woman” posters that hung in Fairfield business windows Thursday no longer represented the hope that a young Fairfield woman with a bright future who vanished two summers ago would return home safely.

Carter appears on CNN’s “Nancy Grace” twice that month.

Mr. Markham is blessed in that he has the support of the Texas EquuSearch - Ohio group.

It is so wonderful that there is now a Texas EquuSearch group in that area that can conduct searches for missing persons in that area.

In a way, it is an honor to Katelyn Markham. The group was formed as a result of Texas EquuSearch - TX looking for her.

I can understand that it may be a while before the remains are released to Katelyn's family.

When Zachary Pittman's (LA) remains were found scattered in dense woods, it was over 2 months before the remains were released to his mother, Christy. Sadly, they were not able to determine cause of death. The case remains an unsolved homicide.

But . . . at least Christy was able to bury her son in a cemetery among family and she has a place to go visit.

Ann, I certainly agree about the Ohio group coming about because of the search for Katelyn. It is an honor to her and her family will be forever grateful for their help, and what they can do for all the others that are missing loved ones.

Christy waited a very long, agonizing time for her son to be found. Even without answers, she is able to visit his grave now. I think of her often.

The discovery of Katelyn Markham’s skeletal remains doesn’t mean her death will be solved quickly, as would be the case in a TV crime drama. | But her skeleton and the place it was found can provide significant clues about how she died and possibly who did it, experts say. | A Brookville, Ind., couple scouring the Big Cedar Creek area for scrap metal stumbled upon Markham’s remains April 7. Pieces of her skeleton were strewn around an area that police called a dump site for junk. Her skull was found in a plastic bag.

And that bag could end up being a key piece of evidence in the newly invigorated investigation, experts say.

CEDAR GROVE, IN (FOX19) - As investigators look for evidence among the remains of Katelyn Markham, one experienced criminal defense attorney has a theory about what happened to the Fairfield woman.

Markham's remains were discovered one week ago along a creek near Cedar Grove, Indiana. Markham had been missing since August of 2011, where she was last seen by her fiance at their Fairfield home.

She became the subject of an intensive search effort by police, firefighters and volunteers.

Attorney Mark Krumbein has years of experience defending murderers, kidnappers and even one man suspected of being a serial killer.

Krumbein says the circumstances surrounding the murder of Katelyn Markham and other young women bear some striking similarities.

FAIRFIELD, OH (FOX19) - In April, the remains of Katelyn Markham were discovered in Cedar Grove, Indiana.

The Fairfield woman had been missing for nearly two years at the time of the discovery.  But now, a monument dedicated to her will make sure people remember her.

Katelyn's father, Dave Markham, says this monument gives people a chance to go and remember her because there's nowhere else to do that right now.

The remains of 21-year-old Katelyn Markham, a long-missing Fairfield woman found dead in Indiana three months ago, are now in Hamilton County, undergoing more tests that could provide clues about how she died, authorities said Tuesday.

Sgt. Noel Houze, spokesman for the Indiana State Police, said he didn’t know specifically what types of tests were being done at the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.

The remains had already been examined and tested in Indianapolis, after they were discovered in April. The site where Markham was found, along Big Cedar Creek, in Franklin County, Ind., is about 25 miles away from her Fairfield condominium, where she was last seen alive on Aug. 23, 2011.

CEDAR GROVE, Ind. - Two years to the day that Katelyn Markham was last seen alive, the Franklin County, Indiana Coroner's Office ruled her death a homicide.

Markham was reported missing from her Fairfield, Ohio home on Aug. 14, 2011. Her remains were found near Cedar Grove, Indiana on April 7, 2013.

Though Franklin County Coroner Wanda Lee declared Katelyn Markham's manner of death a homicide, she could not determine the exact cause of death.

Funeral set for Katelyn Markham

A funeral service for Katelyn Markham, who vanished from her Fairfield home two years ago, has been set for Aug. 25

The public is invited to attend the 4 p.m. service at Fairfield High School auditorium, 8800 Holden Blvd. Doors ope at 2 p.m.

Markham’s skeletal remains were found April 7 at a dump site along Big Cedar Creek in Franklin County, Ind. The Franklin County coroner ruled her death a homicide but could not determine exactly how Markham was killed.

BUTLER COUNTY —

Nearly four years after Katelyn Markham vanished from her Fairfield home and two years after her remains were found in Indiana, no one has been charged in connection with her death.

But plenty have joined the hunt.

Fairfield Police, Indiana State Police and Frank Smith, a local private investigator and retired Butler County Sheriff’s detective, are all looking for answers. Four months ago, Florida private investigator J. Ryan Green joined the hunt after being hired by an anonymous person who has been following via social media.

Green says he has interviewed two people, one of which failed a polygraph test, and they have information about what happened to the 22-year-old art student. But Fairfield detectives failed to act in a timely manner to interrogate the individuals themselves, Green said, and may have missed an opportunity to advance the case.

New twist in Katelyn Markham case

FAIRFIELD — A press conference will be held tomorrow in connection with the death of Fairfield’s Katelyn Markham whose skeletal remains were found in Indiana in 2013, but whose cause of death remains unknown.

Dave Markham, Katelyn’s father, said an attorney as well as Florida private investigator J. Ryan Green who has been investigating the case will speak during the press conference scheduled for 2 p.m. in Forest Park.

“We want the case moved,” Markham said. “Out of Fairfield.”

Then on April 7, 2013, skeletal remains were found in a remote wooded area in Cedar Grove, Ind. Within days, confirmation came that the remains were Katelyn’s, and the Franklin County Coroner Wanda Lee ruled her death a homicide. However, the exact cause of death could not be determined.

That is where the investigation seems to have stalled, but an anonymous donor has increase the reward amount by $25,000 for information leading to the arrested and conviction of her killer. The reward has increased to $100,000.
