WEST JORDAN, Utah -- A 6-year-old girl found dead in a canal near her home was sexually assaulted, police said Wednesday as detectives hunted a suspect.

Authorities in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Jordan said the girl was reported missing by her mother early Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, police ruled Sierra Newbold's death a homicide and said an autopsy determined she had been sexually assaulted.

Salt Lake City residents are being warned to beware of a sexual predator after a six-year-old girl was found dead in a canal near her home.

Little Sierra Newbold was discovered one hour after her mother reported her missing in the suburb of West Jordan and following an autopsy report it was confirmed she had been sexually assaulted.

Investigation Continues In West Jordan Girl's Death (video at link)


6-year-old Sierra Newbold was reported missing by a family member from a residence near 2400 West and 7100 South at 7:27 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The neighbors are tying purple ribbons around the neighborhood to show support for the family. An account at America First has also been set up to help the family. It's under Sierra's name.

The funeral for Sierra is planned for Saturday.

Another child allegedly taken from her bedroom and found about a block from her house deceased and had been sexually abused. No sign of break in at house and child was found about 30 minutes after being reported missing.

Police continue to search for the killer of six-year-old Sierra Newbold - and they think he might have been caught on film abducting the girl from her home.

Officials revealed on Thursday that a surveillance camera at the Newbolds' house in West Jordan, Utah captured images from around the time of her disappearance on Tuesday morning.

this is one is baffling...little info to go on, who saw her last and at what time? noone (including family) has been ruled out yet they say there may be predator out there-and she was found so quickly and so close to home

Honeysage, I agree a 6 year old should not have an obituary. I kept thinking of her all day. She just got out of Kindergarten, and she was raped and murdered. That just should not happen. I hope the above article is right, and they have the kidnapper on video.

This is so awful. I can't imagine what this family is going through. I know if I lived in the vicinity I would have my babies "right under" me every moment until this case is solved.

Slain 6-year-old Sierra Newbold remembered as sweet, spunky

WEST JORDAN — Six-year-old Sierra Newbold was remembered Saturday by friends and family as a sweet and spunky little girl who loved to draw with pink crayons and flash her big brown eyes at the people she loved.

Funeral services for Newbold were held at an LDS Church in West Jordan near the canal where her body was found Tuesday. Police said she was sexually assaulted and murdered but there was no new information on the case or potential suspects released Saturday.

No persons of interest or suspects have been publicly identified, Sanders said, and the child's family members have not been eliminated as possible suspects in the investigation.
"We haven't ruled anyone out," Sanders said Friday.
Sierra, who lived in the Salt Lake City suburb of West Jordan, was reported missing by her mother at 7:27 a.m. Tuesday, police said. Her body was reportedly discovered about 30 minutes later in a canal near her family's home. An autopsy revealed she had been sexually assaulted.
Local news outlets had said that the girl was kidnapped and killed within a 30-minute time frame, but Sanders said Tuesday that the report was incorrect.
Sierra was found "a short time" after her mother reported her missing, he said, "but time of death has not been released."

Eleven days after 6-year-old Sierra Newbold was found dead in a West Jordan canal, police say they’re investigating all 95 tips called into a public hot line but won’t say how close they are to making an arrest.

The girl, who was sexually assaulted, was found after her mother reported her missing the morning of June 26, police said. Surveillance video at the Newbold home captured images from the time Sierra went missing, but police have haven’t said what those images showed.

From what I've seen on the pictures of Sierra, she didn't even lose her first tooth yet.

was hoping the same! they have been so quiet on this case, they have body-she was found so quickly(evidence/DNA), they said they had video. i can only pray that a press conference means an arrest...please, please, please!!!!

I saw one article that said an arrest is expected to be announced. The press conference is at 3 PM MDT which means it will be at 5PM EDT.

Prosecutors announced murder charges and child rape against Terry Lee Black in connection with the sexual abuse and murder of 6-year-old Sierra Newbold on Tuesday

Gill said Terry Black, a man living in an apartment building near the Miller home, was arrested June 29 in connection with other crimes.

DNA samples taken from Black match those found at the crime scene where Sierra's body was found.

Sierra's clothing was found in the field. She was taken from her home at 3:13am. He was booked on 6/30/12 for a different crime. He attended the same church. COD was drowning.

Sierra's DNA was found on him.

He was caught robbing a bank on 6/29/12. The detective noticed his address was close to Sierra's.

SALT LAKE CITY – A man has been arrested in the death a 6-year-old Utah girl after authorities say he sneaked into her home through a sliding glass door in the middle of the night, then raped and killed the child.

Terry Lee Black, 41, a neighbor of the girl, has been charged with aggravated murder, kidnapping and rape of a child, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said Tuesday.

Sliding glass door. I don't recall locked or unlocked.

Snip - The child's mother called police just before 7:30 a.m. on June 26 to report she was woke up and discovered the child missing from their home, 2383 W. 7095 South. The sliding glass door at the home's dining room was open.

Alessandra- I was going off memory from the p/c in that post. Reports are now indicating Black was arrested on 6/29 and booked 6/30 on suspicion. No charges showing yet for the rape, kidnapping and murder of Sierra.

Snip- Black was arrested on June 29 on suspicion of car theft and bank robbery.

Authorities said alert police officers then noticed Black lived in an apartment near the canal where the young girl's body was found, and that debris on his clothing appeared similar to debris found in the field where the child's clothing was discovered.
