Brett Seacat found guilty in murder of wife Vashti
By Kyle McCaskey
CREATED 2:32 PM
A Kingman County jury convicted Brett Seacat of first-degree murder of his wife, Vashti.
Brett Seacat, a former law enforcement trainer, was found guilty of murdering 34-year-old Vashti, then setting their Kingman home on fire in April 2011.
Defense attorneys argued Vashti committed suicide and set the fire herself. Prosecutors said Vashti was shot by Brett, and he set the fire to cover up evidence. The couple's two boys and Brett escaped the burning home.
The case was sent to the jury late Monday.
Seacat, 37, could face life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder.

"Prosecutors presented the 37-year-old Seacat as a "controlling, manipulative" husband who planned the murder of his wife, Vashti Seacat, in April 2011.
The jury seemed to agree, convicting the ex-cop on a charge of first-degree murder. Seacat was also found guilty of aggravated arson and two counts of child endangerment stemming from the fire prosecutors said he set as his two young sons slept down the hall from their mother's dead body.
Sentencing was set for the morning of Aug. 5, and the state indicated it would seek a sentence of 50 years in prison."

Tidbits for those who didn't get to watch.....after verdict was read the defense asked for him to be released on his own recognizance until sentencing....I'll pause here to wait for y'all to stop LAUGHING.
Judge said that he thinks the felon is more of a flight risk now/today than ever before. Then the felon was SHACKLED right there in the courtroom- waist, hands, ankles. Ha.
Prosecution asked for aggravators on the "Hard 50 yrs", and defense whined that they needed more than 30 days to prepare mitigation. Good luck with that.
This trial has been very enlightening to me - just the protocol, the speed of things, rarely sidebars or objections, and the judge ruled immediately if there were any. Jury did its job.
In addition to Vashti's family and friends, their 2 boys who are suffering, they showed Brett's dad - he had tears, and I'm sure both his parents are devastated as well. Bad choice, BS. Now you pay the piper.

Brett Seacat Sentenced To Life In Prison
Monday, August 5 2013
Brett Seacat has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Vashti. He will be eligible for parole in 25 years.
UPDATE:
Monday, August 5 2013
A defiant former Kansas police instructor has been sentenced to life in prison for the April 2011 shooting death of his wife.
Before he was sentenced Monday, Brett Seacat accused the judge of helping to convict him by hiding evidence that proves Seacat's innocence.
The 37-year-old Kingman man told Judge Larry Solomon in a rambling courtroom statement that the judge helped convict him because Solomon wants a Kansas Supreme Court nomination.
Seacat was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for premeditated first-degree murder in the death of 34-year-old Vashti Seacat. He also got more than six years in prison for aggravated arson and child endangerment. He will not be eligible for parole for more than 31 years.

State No Longer Seeking 'Hard 50' Sentence Against Seacat
By: KAKE News
July 11, 2013
The Kansas Attorney General's office is no longer asking a judge to sentence a former law officer to 50 years without parole for killing his wife.
Brett Seacat was found guilty last month of killing his wife, Vashti, and setting their Kingman home on fire in April, 2011. Seacat and the couple's two sons escaped the fire.
Prosecutors initially announced they would seek the "Hard 50" sentence--50 years in prison without parole--against Seacat. Prosecutors withdrew that intent in court documents filed earlier this month. They cited a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that juries, rather than judges, should consider facts in trials that could result in longer minimum sentences.
Seacat is scheduled to be sentenced August 5.

Sandra J. Milburn/The Hutchinson News) Brett Seacat leaves a Kingman County courtroom Monday morning after being sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife, Vashti, and setting their home on fire.

Ex-lawman gets life with no parole for 31 years in wife's murder and arson.

KINGMAN - Former sheriff's deputy and law enforcement instructor Brett Seacat was sentenced Monday to life in prison for the April 2011 murder of his wife, Vashti.
However, Seacat, 37, spent the moments before the sentencing delivering a rambling speech in which he accused his deceased wife's family of abuse and District Court Judge Larry Solomon of seeking fame and a nomination to the Kansas Supreme Court.
"Go ahead and pass the sentence that you hope will get you the biggest headline... You are going to hell for what you've done in this case," Seacat told Solomon. "After all, you purchased it with your soul," Seacat said of his conviction. "So you've earned it."

"I teach about crimes. I know what covers up crimes and what doesn't," Seacat said. "If I wanted her dead, I'd have a whole lifetime to do it."
Seacat accused her family of abusing Vashti and driving her to suicide, his defense during trial. Family members often held each other while he spoke.
In all, Seacat will serve at least 25 years for the murder, plus an additional cumulative 6 years for arson and two counts of aggravated endangerment of a child - for a total of 31 years - before he is eligible for parole.

What a dangerous evil sociopath he is. I watched this trial, and have no doubt in my mind that he thought he would get away with this crime. The fact that he used and endangered his own sons while murdering their mother is depraved. I'm surprised they relented on the hard 50, but I highly doubt he will ever get parole. Buh Bye, Brett.

"The hard fifty" was off the table because of a ruling the Supreme Court made last June. The prosecution would have had to call back the jury or impanel a new jury for the sentencing phase of the trial.
Here is some information:
http://www.kansascity.com/2013/07/13/4343090/supreme-court-ruling-threatens.html
Seacat is a narcissistic sociopath, his arrogance and indifference to the pain that his actions have caused to his own children, Vashti's family, and his own family, is very disturbing.
I'm glad the judge put him him in his place when he told him that he was living in an alternative reality. He is delusional, he had the audacity to tell the judge that his sentence was his "ticket" to his "fifteen minutes of fame" and "a promotion to the Supreme Court". The nerve! This judge have sentenced to prison hundreds of criminals like him.
