CORNWALL, Ont. - An autopsy has been scheduled this week after a baby born on the floor of an Ottawa jail cell a year ago died in hospital.

Julie Bilotta's lawyer, Lawrence Greenspon, says the Cornwall, Ont., woman is "absolutely devastated" by the death of her one-year-old son Gionni.

Cornwall police, meanwhile, say they were called to a home around 5 a.m. Sunday after a 13-month-old boy was found without vital signs.

They say the baby was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the coroner's office has been called in to investigate the child's "sudden death," which is required under provincial rules.

Woman who gave birth in Ottawa jail arrested again

Julie Bilotta, the woman who gave birth on the concrete floor of her Ottawa jail cell, has been arrested again for shoplifting.

...It is the second time Bilotta has been charged in the past five months. She and her spouse, Dakota Garlow, were charged in January with theft after allegedly stealing chicken wings, popcorn, jerky, Cheetos and butter from another store.

...The cause of the child’s death is still not known.

Julie Bilotta launches $1.3M lawsuit after jailhouse birth

The woman who made national headlines in 2012 after giving birth in an Ottawa jail cell is suing the province, the jail and some of its staff and guards for more than $1 million.

...In the lawsuit, she claims guards and medical staff ignored her calls for help as she went into labour in her jail cell. Her son, Gionni, was born alive and suffered respiratory problems.

The lawsuit claims Gionni's death about a year later was related to the circumstances of his birth.
