Child porn found in home of Hailey's alleged killer

" ... According to the search warrant affidavit, police also found guns, ammunition, a bullet casing, bleach, and duct tape at the home where the girl’s body was discovered Wednesday.

Springfield police officers said when they first entered the home a strong smell of bleach led them to the basement where the child’s body was hidden. The remains were found inside a large plastic storage container concealed inside two trash bags.

A search of the home also turned up “additional bottles of bleach, a roll of large black trash bags, boxes of trash bags, and paper towels,” the affidavit states.

A laptop computer and a video camera were found in the living room near a large revolver that was in its holster, police said.

In one bedroom, officers said they found a shotgun and a mattress with the bedding removed...."

Past problems

Old court documents of Wood reveal relatively minor past criminal charges, admitted substance abuse issues and a struggle in college due to partying.

His most recent conviction was in 2001 for illegal taking of wildlife. Court documents say Wood used an unplugged shotgun while turkey hunting near Ritter Elementary.

A 1990 conviction, for possession of marijuana, reveals that Wood described some relatives as “a bunch of boozers” and himself struggled with alcohol. He said his parents never touched illegal drugs and did not drink to excess, but he described a more distant relative as an alcoholic.

He also described a past conviction — not detailed in the drug program assessment included in court documents — for careless and imprudent driving. He told officials he had originally been charged with driving while intoxicated in that 1987 case, but pleaded the charge down.

“Craig reports worrying about his drinking,” the assessment report notes.

He got a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice from then-Southwest Missouri State in December 1992.

Only 10 percent of child abduction killers are older than 40, according to the Justice Department study.

So it’s no wonder that police agencies in southwest Missouri wonder if there’s anything else in Wood’s past.

In the hours after Wood’s arrest, Springfield-area police agencies began checking files to see if his name popped up in other investigations or if there were any similar unsolved cases.

“That’s one of the first things I checked, to see if we had anything,” said Ash Grove Cpl. Jacob Marler. “Any prior contacts? But nothing. Cold cases of ours with him as a suspect? No we do not.”

In the 2006 study, almost half of the child killers analyzed had a substantial history of crimes against children before they killed their victim.

Experts say investigators will try to learn if there is something in Wood’s background that hasn’t been revealed yet. They likely will construct a timeline of his activities starting in his teen years, in part to see where he has traveled.

It would be highly unusual for a man his age to commit this impulsive act without having a history of risky behavior, the experts said.

“You don’t have this kind of behavior that you can turn off and on like a light switch,” said O’Toole. “No one just snaps for no reason whatsoever and goes out and kidnaps a 10-year-old girl, takes her somewhere and then kills her. And then they morph back into being a normal, everyday person.

“That doesn’t happen.”

Accused killer Craig Wood appeared in Greene County Associate
Circuit Court for the first time on Friday morning.


Wood is charged with first-degree murder, child kidnapping and armed criminal action for the abduction and killing of Hailey Owens on Tuesday afternoon.  Prosecutors charge Wood grabbed the 10-year-old girl from a street in the west Springfield neighborhood where she lived and threw her into the cab of his pickup.  A probable cause statement says Owens was shot to death, and her body was wrapped in plastic in Wood's home.

Wood appeared before Associate Circuit Judge Dan Imhof on Friday morning by video hookup from the Greene County jail.  Imhoff ordered him held without bond, and set a preliminary hearing for April 7.

Search warrant documents show more on case against accused killer Craig Wood
Police found several guns and pornographic images of young children.

Police report they entered the house at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday after a judge approved a search warrant at 1:28 a.m.  Officers did an initial search and walk-through and then waited for crime scene investigators and the FBI.

Deputy Greene County Medical Examiner Tom Van De Berg reported seeing ligature marks on Hailey’s arms near her wrists.  Investigators also report finding a .22 caliber shell casing on the basement floor of Wood’s home.

The search warrant also says police found a 3-ring binder with pornographic photos of young children.  Officers also seized computers, cameras, 15 guns, 30 video recordings and a hat believed to have been worn by Hailey.

Court records indicate the floor of the basement where the girl's body was found was still damp with bleach - presumably used to clean the crime scene.

Patterson has said he would consider seeking the death penalty.

Hailey Owens' mother is struggling for answers, trying to understand why anyone would snatch and murder her precious ten-year-old daughter.  KY3's Steve Grant had stopped to see the flowers people left on the street where Hailey was taken.  A car pulled up, Stacey Barfield, her sister, aunt and cousin got out. She was calm and composed and this conversation started.

Much of Hailey Owens’ family on her dad’s side has strong connection to Strafford. When the news came that the 10-year-old had been killed, the community members made a plan to help support the family.

Hailey Owens

Hailey Owens was born on August 18, 2003, in Springfield, Missouri. She went to heaven on February 18, 2014 at the age of 10.

Hailey was a high-spirited, happy child. She was kind-hearted, full of life, full of laughter, and full of love. She enjoyed helping her mom with laundry, cooking, and baby-sitting. She was thrilled that she was getting ready to become an aunt.

At times, Hailey was a girly-girl who loved painting her fingernails, watching Princess movies, playing dress-up, getting her hair fixed, and having her picture taken by her sister at Nathaniel Greene Park. At other times, she was a tomboy who loved playing in the mud and riding her bike in the creek.

Hailey loved to talk, enjoyed all kinds of music, and the colors pink and purple were her favorites. She attended Bowerman Elementary from kindergarten through second grade and was currently a fourth grader at Westport Elementary. She was a believer in Jesus Christ and had a positive impact on everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed.

Hailey is survived by her parents, Jeff and Stacey Barfield, dad and mom; Markus Ryan Owens, dad; Markus Owens, brother; J.D. Barfield, brother; Alexa Barfield, sister; many loving relatives from the Barfield, Owens, Nord, and Herman families; and many, many friends.

The family is grateful for the support, encouragement, and love they have received from people locally, nationally, and globally. Donations to benefit the family may be made to the Hailey Owens Memorial Fund through Empire Bank.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ridgecrest Baptist Church. A funeral service celebrating Hailey's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, also at Ridgecrest. Pastor Pat Findley from Hamlin Memorial Baptist Church will be officiating.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The man accused in the death of 10-year-old Hailey Owens is being kept away from other inmates.

"We have to implement certain procedures that we wouldn't otherwise do," Major Kevin Spaulding said. "We have him on what's called a three-officer watch."

Jailing Craig Wood, who is accused first degree murder, armed criminal action, and child kidnapping, is an around-the-clock job for Greene County corrections officers.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A preliminary hearing date is now set for Craig Michael Wood, the middle-school football coach accused of kidnapping and killing a 10-year-old girl in Springfield, Mo.

A judge last week scheduled Wood’s preliminary hearing for 9 a.m. April 2 at the Greene County Courthouse. Wood remains jailed without bond. The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence for a case to go to trial in the death of fourth-grader Hailey Owens.
