Harringtons say social media has helped murder case

September 21, 2010
By Jarett Henshaw

Gil and Dan Harrington say social media websites have had big impact on their daughter's murder case that's gone unsolved for nearly a year now.

"It has become a way to participate, give input, give another set of eyes. It has been valuable,” said Gil Harrington.

After her daughter Morgan Harrington disappeared last October. They hired a public relations company to help manage the media attention they were getting. Digital Strategist Valerie Elston headed up that effort and explained their methods at Roanoke College to a room full of other PR specialists from around the state.

"Without social media, I think the case probably would have died out in the media a lot faster,” said Elston.

Elston says people flooded to the Facebook page with tips, theories, and volunteered to help with search efforts.

1 year later, search for Morgan Harrington's killer continues

October 18, 2010 - 12:08pm

WASHINGTON - Virginia State Police are still trying to solve the murder of a Virginia Tech student one year after her death.

Morgan Harrington, 21, of Roanoke, Va., disappeared Oct. 17, 2009 after a Metallica concert at the University of Virginia. Her remains were found three months later on an Albemarle County farm near where she was last seen.

In July, police found a forensic link between Harrington and a Fairfax City sexual assault suspect from 2005. But police don't know the man's identity, says FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt.

Familial DNA use starting

State to start testing familial DNA

By Chelyen Davis
Date published: 3/22/2011

Virginia will move forward with familial DNA testing in certain criminal cases, Gov. Bob McDonnell's office said yesterday.

The technique is controversial due to privacy concerns, but it's backed by the family of Morgan Harrington, the Virginia Tech student whose slaying in Charlottesville remains unsolved.

In familial DNA searches, police check their DNA databases for people who are close but not complete matches for DNA evidence, when the perpetrator of the crime isn't in the database.

Those people would be considered potential relatives of the person who did commit the crime, and identifying them could help police focus their investigations.

Morgan Harrington Awarded Posthumous Degree

Posted: May 14, 2011 11:48 PM EDT
Reporter: David Tate

Blacksburg, VA - While thousands across our area get their hard-earned diploma, one student stands out at Virginia Tech for the diploma she was kept from earning. That did not stop Virginia Tech officials from awarding a Bachelor's of Arts degree to murdered Tech sophomore, Morgan Harrington, along with the rest of her class.

As family and friends line up to get a good seat inside the Commonwealth Ballroom, at Virginia Tech, to see one of the last commencement ceremonies of the day, Dan and Gil Harrington prepare for a moment in time they thought they would never get to experience.

"Seeing what could have been, what will never be for us or for Morgan, is not as much as the pain of emptiness of Morgan being erased and negated by the person who murdered her," mother Gil Harrington said.

Security agency sued in Harrington death

Morgan Harrington's mother said guards should have let her daughter re-enter a Charlottesville concert two years ago, on the night she later disappeared.

By Duncan Adams
Tuesday, October 18, 2011

~Snipped~

The lawsuit alleges that RMC, providing event security that night, should have known that Morgan Harrington had suffered an injury inside the arena and also should have allowed the young woman to return to the concert after she had left the building.

The lawsuit reads, "As a result of the defendant's failure and refusal to allow plaintiff's decedent to re-enter the arena, or report her attempt to do so, plaintiff's decedent was left isolated and alone outside the arena where she was subsequently abducted and murdered."

FBI Press Release

Authorities Launch Multimedia Campaign in Morgan Harrington Murder Case

Murder Suspect Linked by DNA to Sexual Assault in Fairfax City, Virginia

FBI Washington June 13, 2012

Public Information Office (202) 278-3519

Today, federal, state, and local law enforcement launched a multimedia campaign that includes two enhanced composite sketches of a suspect in the 2009 murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. The unknown murder suspect is also connected by DNA to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax City, Virginia.

Authorities recently enhanced the composite sketch created in 2005 from a description by the sexual assault victim. One of the composites shows the suspect with facial hair, as the suspect was described at the time of the attack. The second composite sketch features him without facial hair.

The two attacks were connected through DNA after a forensic profile was submitted by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science to the FBI’s national DNA database. The search found that the suspect in the Harrington murder investigation matched the DNA profile of the attacker in Fairfax City.

The multimedia campaign includes a public service announcement by Metallica lead guitarist James Hetfield appealing to the public to come forward with information concerning the Morgan Harrington investigation. The composite sketches of the suspect are being featured on bus shelters in Washington, D.C., as well as on digital billboards in Richmond, Virginia; Roanoke, Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and in 23 other states along the East Coast. Social media outreach and alerts via Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, along with a website dedicated to the Harrington case were also launched Wednesday. Podcasts are now available on iTunes, and radio spots are airing to further raise awareness of the ongoing investigation. The multi-pronged effort is designed to develop new leads and renew the public’s attention in the attacks. The campaign implements techniques similar to those that have led to the arrests of the East Coast Rapist as well as Ten Most Wanted fugitive James “Whitey” Bulger.

The Jefferson Area Crime Stoppers is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Morgan Harrington’s murder. In addition, the band Metallica is adding $50,000 to the reward, for a total of $150,000.

Morgan Harrington Murder

On the evening of Saturday, October 17, 2009, Harrington attended a Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena on the University of Virginia (UVA) campus in Charlottesville, Va. At approximately 8:30 p.m., she left the arena and was unable to re-enter the facility. She was last seen hitchhiking for a ride from passing traffic.

Harrington was dressed that night in a black T-shirt with the word “Pantera” spelled out in tan letters and was wearing a distinctive Swarovski crystal necklace made of large crystal chain links, which investigators have yet to recover. Harrington’s “Pantera” T-shirt was found on November 11, 2009, in front of a row of apartments along 15th Street, NW near Grady Avenue in Charlottesville. Harrington’s skeletal remains were later discovered on January 26, 2010, in a remote field on an Albemarle County, Virginia farm along Route 29. A camera that Harrington had in her possession that night has never been recovered.

Sexual Assault in Fairfax City, Virginia

On the evening of Saturday, September 24, 2005, a 26-year-old victim was walking home from the Giant Food Store located on the 3700 block of Jermantown Road in Fairfax City, Virginia. The suspect grabbed the victim from behind as she walked down Rock Garden Drive toward her residence. He then carried the victim to a grassy area behind a maintenance shed, where he sexually assaulted her. The suspect was last seen running from the area.

The suspect is described as an African-American male with black hair and facial hair at the time of the attack. He is approximately 6’0” tall and was believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35 years old at the time of the attack.

The public is asked to review this information and consider whether they know someone who generally fits this description, who lived or had ties to the area around the times of the assaults, or who may have been known to spend considerable amounts of time in those areas.

People who know the suspect may not believe that he is capable of committing these crimes. He may not necessarily have a violent criminal history. Because investigators are in possession of DNA evidence that can either positively link the suspect to his crimes or exclude innocent parties, citizens should not hesitate to provide information, even if it is just the name of a potential suspect.

The following agencies are cooperating in the investigation of these crimes: the Virginia State Police, City of Fairfax Police, University of Virginia Police, Charlottesville Police, Albemarle County Police, Albemarle County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Virginia Tech Police Department, George Mason Police Department, and the FBI.

Law enforcement agencies are asking anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Virginia State Police Tip line at 434-352-3467.

Efforts Continue in Charlottesville to find Morgan Harrington’s Killer

Updated: Aug 11, 2012 09:39 PM EDT

The search for Morgan Harrington's killer continues in Charlottesville. On Saturday, members of the organization Help Save the Next Girl were back in the city, pushing the latest image of the murder suspect. Members are confident their efforts are making a difference.

They say several phone calls have come into police since relaunching their canvassing efforts in the city and Albemarle County, and they want to continue to capitalize on the momentum.

Lawsuit makes new claims in case of Virginia Tech student found slain after 2009 concert

By Associated Press
Updated: Tuesday, March 26, 3:35 PM

~Snipped~

The Harringtons’ lawsuit, however, contends that the policy wasn’t always followed and that RMC staff had tended to an off-duty police officer who was intoxicated at the concert, arranging for a taxi for the officer.

Harrington’s injuries had been cited in lawsuit’s initial filing, but the latest account provides more detail. It claims Harrington left her friends at the concert to go to a restroom in the arena and “suffered a serious head injury was rendered unable to take care of herself.”

The cause of the injury — a 2- to 3-inch cut on her chin — was not explained. A bystander who assisted Harrington said she was “acting erratically” but did not detect an odor of alcohol.

The lawsuit does not explain why Harrington left the arena. But when she attempted to return, RMC staff “barred her from a place of safety where medical attention could have been provided and where her friends could have assisted her.”

REPORT: Forensic evidence links Hannah Graham suspect to murdered Virginia Tech student
Posted 10:15 AM, September 29, 2014, by Q13 FOX News Staff, Updated at 10:25am, September 29, 2014

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virgina —The suspect in the abduction of an 18-year-old in Charlottesville Virgina earlier this month has been linked to a previous disappearance of a 20-year-old Virgina Tech student reported WTVR-TV.

Reporter Laura French cited sources close to the investigation saying authorities had forensically linked the man accused in the abduction of Hanna Graham to the disappearance of VT student Morgan Harrington in 2009.

Justice4all wrote:Parents of slain Virginia Tech student believe murder is related to Colonial Parkway killings

The parents of the Virginia Tech student who was kidnapped and murdered after a Charlottesville concert are now worried her killing is part of a larger crime spree.

Her father said the murder could even be related to the Colonial Parkway killings.

Today Gil Harrington went to the Copley Bridge in Charlottesville, the last place her daughter Morgan was seen alive.

She placed a chrome angel atop a spreading memorial. She chose this sculpture because it is featureless. It's not just for Morgan, but for a number of young women mostly who have vanished or who've been slain in a series of unsolved crimes.

"This is not his first crime. He has upped his game in a significant and disturbing way," Gil Harrington said.

Morgan's father distributed a map showing the disappearances or murders of several people like Morgan in the past year. He's also aware of Alicia Showalter Reynolds, the victim of an unknown highway stalker in the Charlottesville area. In the mid 1990s, a man targeted women on Rt. 29. Morgan's body was found not far from where Reynold's remains were dumped more than a decade earlier. Dan Harrington thinks the cases may be related.

"We have discussed that with police. They have not commented nor committed that Morgan's death is connected to that, but clearly it is being considered. It is also being considered with the Colonial Parkway Murders," he said.

Many people, including family members of Colonial Parkway victims, have suspected the killer who took eight lives in our area migrated in the 1990s to the Charlottesville area, where the highway stalkings frightened a dozen women and ended in Reynold's murder.

"There are a lot of unsolved crimes in Virginia in the last 15 years. To me, it is quite frightening that those things remain unsolved," Dan Harrington added.

Today Morgan's parents also revealed the killer severely battered the student before her death. They said the damage to her skeleton was horrifying.

"This Charlottesville man hurt Morgan Harrington enough to break her bones before he murdered her. I cannot get the image of Morgan's shattered bones out of my mind."

Gil Harrington believes the killer is from the Charlottesville area, but police have not named any suspects.

Morgan's parents worry the killer is stalking other women in the area around the UVA campus.

Harrington's parents say if someone does not turn him in, he will surely strike again.

I'm glad they finally got him.
I'd like to think they will go for the DP on this, and at the very
least LWOP.

This Animal probably has dozens of Victims we don' know about,
and/or they will not be able to prove.
Waste of oxygen, IMO.

Jesse Matthew to appear in Fairfax court by video

8:02 p.m. EDT October 27, 2014

I'm posting this on both this thread and Hannah Graham's thread.

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA9) -- The suspect accused of abducting University of Virginia student Hannah Graham will make a court appearance in Fairfax via video for charges he faces related to a 2005 sexual assault.

... The death penalty is not available on the Fairfax charges because the victim is still alive.

Legal experts say there is one good reason to try Jesse Matthew in Fairfax first. If it's a strong case which secures a conviction, it will "enhance the punishment in Charlottesville," says longtime criminal defense attorney Robert Whitestone.

An attempted murder conviction in Fairfax would increase the likelihood that Matthew might get the death penalty in Charlottesville, if he's charged with a capital offense.

Warrant details DNA linking Hannah Graham suspect to Morgan Harrington

Posted: Monday, November 24, 2014 10:12 pm

DNA obtained from a cigar butt and a T-shirt links Jesse Matthew Jr. to the disappearance and death of Morgan Harrington, according to a search warrant.

The “wooden tip” from the butt found in Matthew’s wallet provided the DNA match to DNA on Harrington’s shirt, according to the search warrant filed Oct. 16 and obtained by NBC29, The Daily Progress’ news partner.

State police have said Matthew’s arrest Sept. 24 in the disappearance of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, 18, provided a forensic link to the Harrington case.

File - Morgan Harrington disappeared during a 2009 Metallica concert at John Paul Jones Arena.

Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., 33, has been formally charged with the abduction and first-degree murder of Morgan Dana Harrington, the Virginia Tech student who went missing from a Charlottesville concert in 2009 and whose remains were found in Albemarle County months later.

Virginia State Police, who were in charge of the Harrington case, issued a release Tuesday saying that last week, an Albemarle County grand jury indicted Matthew on charges of first-degree murder and abduction with the intent to defile. The maximum penalty for each offense is life in prison.

On Tuesday, those indictments were served to Matthew, who is scheduled to appear at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday in Albemarle County Circuit Court. Authorities said a press conference will not follow the hearing.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A grand jury has indicted a man already charged with killing a University of Virginia student with the murder of a Virginia Tech student who disappeared in 2009.

The Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney Office said Tuesday Jesse Leroy Matthew, Jr. has been charged with the first-degree murder of 20-year-old Morgan Harrington. Harrington vanished after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. Matthew was also charged with abduction with intent to defile.

Matthew is charged with capital murder in the September 2014 disappearance and death of 18-year-old University of Virginia student Hannah Graham.

Authorities have previously said forensic evidence linked Matthew to Harrington.

A grand jury has indicted a man already charged with killing a University of Virginia student with the death of a Virginia Tech student who disappeared in 2009.

Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Morgan Harrington, the Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office said Tuesday in a news release. Harrington vanished after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. Her T-shirt was later found on a nearby tree limb and her body was found more than three months later in a field in Albemarle County about 6 miles away from where the concert was held.

Matthew was also charged with abduction with intent to defile in Harrington's case.

Authorities have previously said forensic evidence linked Matthew to Harrington, but they have not said what that evidence is. In the news release, authorities said they will not comment on the evidence or what punishment they may seek for Matthew.

Matthew is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Harrington's case on Wednesday.

Mothers of Morgan Harrington and Jesse Matthew Jr. shake hands after court hearings

Posted 6:00 pm, September 30, 2015, by Alix Bryan and Laura French, Updated at 08:15pm, September 30, 2015

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two mothers shook hands in an Albemarle County courtroom on Wednesday; the mother who initiated the handshake last saw her daughter alive on Oct. 17, 2009, and the other mother’s son – suspected to be the last person who saw the girl alive – faces a murder trial.

They shook hands after a trial date was set for Jesse Matthew Jr., the suspect charged with the murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, who disappeared outside John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville while attending a Metallica concert.

The trial was set originally for Oct. 17, 2016, but was changed to Oct. 24, 2016, in recognition of what would be the seven-year anniversary of Harrington’s disappearance.

Matthew is also charged with capital murder in the abduction and death of second-year UVa. student Hannah Graham, and on Wednesday there were back-to-back hearings regarding both cases.

‘I want him to see us,’ Morgan Harrington’s mom says; Jesse Matthew appears in court (Video)

Posted 7:01 pm, December 17, 2015, by CNN Wire, Updated at 07:03pm, December 17, 2015

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. -- Attorneys representing convicted rapist, and accused killer, Jesse Matthew say they need more time to look over evidence before setting future hearings in the Morgan Harrington case.

At a status hearing for the 2009 murder of the Virginia Tech student, Matthew's defense said they were just getting into the discovery phase of the case. As a result, no motions were filed Thursday or future hearings set.

Morgan’s parents Dan and Gil took a front seat at the hearing and looked into Matthew’s eyes.

"I want him to see us I want him to know that we’re real and we are still experiencing the results of his actions,” said Gil Harrington, Morgan Harrington’s mother. "It’s part of my covenant with Morgan that I witness every moment of this trial that I can. Even though it interrupts the flow of our day, we come two hours and this is a busy time of year, but you know for people who have a dead child the holiday season is really more a matter of navigation we try and navigate through it and not get lost in the places that have too much sorrow and maybe this is a distraction to do some of that navigating."

Harrington's parents say if someone does not turn him in, he will surely strike again.

This is good.
The mother WAS correct.
Comment in yellow respectfully snipped by me.

Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Harrington understood what they were dealing with.  When I read the below linked "statement of facts" I was startled at how much evidence law enforcement had on the person who took Morgan's life with such brutality.

I guess what I'm not clear on is when all this evidence was put together.  For surely there was enough to make an arrest before this animal murdered another young woman.  Morgan Harrington -- Found Deceased 1/26/10 - Page 4 Twocents
