Massive Search for missing 2-year-old Boy near Sedona
July 25, 10:52 PM
Update:
As of this evening, the search is still ongoing. They have a diver on scene as well as others continuing the search for this missing boy. There were at least 25 non-family campers on the campgrounds, all of which who have been interviewed as well as provided YCSO with contact information for further contact.
It has been reported that the "mother" whom Syler was with, is the custodial mother, seeking to adopt him. The biological mother and father have been identified and are currently trying to be located.
Speaking with the aunt to this little boy, we have learned that she received the call this morning while at work that Syler was missing.
"The search and rescue crews will continue searching through the night." Stated Dwight D'Evelyn of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office earlier this evening.
Update: 7/26/10 6:59:03 AM
"I was just briefed by the Search and Rescue Incident Commander – No significant update at this time. Detectives spent the night searching the campsite and all its contents. 2 Vehicles were towed from the site for further inspection. This part of the investigation is ongoing and I will attempt further information from detectives later today." Stated Dwight D'Evelyn of the YSCO.
Searchers remained on scene throughout the night. This morning, specially trained bloodhounds continue a grid search of the area hoping to pick of any scent of Syler and this will be the focus throughout the day.
The SAR Incident Commander has requested that press helicopters stay out of the general area this morning as the chopper noise is distracting the bloodhounds on the ground and delaying their tracking efforts.

Search Continues for 2-year-old Syler Newton
Written by Compiled from Various Sources
Monday, 26 July 2010 09:47
Syler and family, including the custodial mother, her mother, and her two children ages 10 and 12, all came to the campsite this past Friday. The family is from Flagstaff. The custodial mother claims she last saw Syler around 12:30 AM on Sunday inside a tent immediately adjacent to the tent she slept in. Slyer was sleeping with one of the custodial mom’s children. At approximately 1:45AM, the custodial mother found Syler missing and conducted a search before calling 911. The first official call recorded by YCSO Communications came around at 2:30 AM from a camp host. Deputies were on scene by 3 AM and conducted an initial search along with interviews of area campers. The full search effort began in earnest during the early morning hours on Sunday. We are still in the process of trying to verify a call from the custodial mother to YCSO Sunday morning. Cell phone reception is poor in the area and could have been a factor.

Search continues for toddler who disappeared from campsite near Rimrock

The search continues in full force, but the new information that there was some sort of custody issue going on between the boy's biological parents and the woman who was with him at the campground should play a part in this investigation.
Bloodhounds have been given a piece of Syler's clothing for tracking. Investigators are looking into foul play and are not ruling anything out at this point.
On Sunday, detectives removed two vehicles and property from Syler's campsite and those items will be examined over the next few days.

Thanks for posting this JAG. I hope Syler is found soon. His disappearance seems kind of fishy with the custody issues going on.

Snaz, Thank you for cutting the articles to the new guidelines for me. I, as usual, was in fly-by mode and wanted to get these up. Feel free to slap my hand if I forget down the road:)
J4A~ Something about the video with the custodial "mom" is off. Hopefully, its just me today and this little guy will turn up tired and hungry....but safe.

Two-Year-Old Syler Newton Vanishes From Arizona Campground
The Boy Had Been With A Woman Who Planned to Adopt Him
By EMILY FRIEDMAN
July 27, 2010
A two-year-old boy vanished from a campground in Arizona Sunday after his soon-to-be adoptive mother tucked him into his sleeping bag in a tent that the family was sharing.
Authorities in Rimrock, Ariz., are in the third day of their search for Syler Newton, and are trying to determine whether the little boy wandered off on his own or whether he was the subject of a custody dispute.
"So far we don't have any reports that Syler was taken from the campsite," said Yavapai Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn. "That's been the thing that keeps us believing that he wandered away from the tent."
snip:
A search of public records shows that Priem has a criminal history, including a 2007 charge of falsely reporting a crime to police and a prescription drug violation in 2004.

Syler Newton disappeared early Sunday morning from his tent, wearing only a diaper, while camping with a family who was planning to adopt him.

I can't put my finger on *it*, but something isn't right. Syler was seen by other campers the night of his disappearance so he was at the campsite. The bio mom has been ruled out.
I think the whole "can't find his body" so soon is bugging me. What family has ever made a statement like that so early in a search?

July 30, 9:38 AM

It has been over 120 hours since Sylar Newton first went missing in the early hours of Sunday morning from Beaver Creek Campgrounds near Rimrock and Sedona, Arizona. Since then search and rescue crews, as well as Yavapai County Sheriff's Officer's have searched tirelessly for this boy. Since then the FBI has offered their resources and taken part in the investigation.
They are working this case in a two prong manner, the first being the search and rescue. Volunteers are working 24 hours a day at this point to find Sylar. These volunteers are out there for this long because they desperately want to find this boy. The second part of this case, is the investigation, which details of are not being shared to prevent tainting of evidence or leads that come up.

I posted this at Hinky this evening... though you guys might be interested in reading it. I believe this is very possibly a stranger abduction.
I should have also added that Suzie's parents slept only yards away. It happens......
Valhall said:
“It is hard to believe that an intruder could enter a tent with several other people sleeping in it and abscond with a small child without awaking at least one other person.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would normally agree with you on this, Valhall, but children do go missing from tents where other people sleep soundly.
It happened in 1973 to seven year old Suzie Jaeger. She was asleep in her tent beside her older sister, when David Meirhofer cut a hole in the tent and took Suzie. Her older sister never heard her, but had a “sense” about something wrong. Suzie just disappeared, and Meirhofer contacted her family the following year on the anniversary of her kidnapping. He eventually confessed to having killed Suzie, along with three other people. David Meirhofer hung himself in jail in 1974 only hours after confessing to the murders.
Suzie’s mother, Marietta Jaeger, wrote a book called ‘The Lost Child,’ and went on to devote her life to helping other parents who had suffered the death of a child.
That is a sad story Snaz. I assume Meirhofer cut a hole in the tent because of the noise that tent zippers make. I don't think I read anything about a hole in Syler's tent, but there is always a possibility that somebody took a huge risk, unzipped the tent very slowly, and took Syler without waking anybody.
Thanks Snaz. Anything is possible. I almost prefer it in cases like this...strangers. Children love those who take care of them and those who lose a life to parents must be so confused in the last moments, wondering why....
But in this case, I don't know what it is exactly. The custodial mom set me off right from the start. I really hope I'm wrong, but I think she is involved.
Re: Sylar Newton -- Found Deceased 8/10/10
I agree, JAG... it must be completely confusing to a child when he is killed by someone he knows and loves.... I can't imagine those last moments of a little life as it is snuffed out. (Sorry for the mental image....)
Sylar Newton case update: Second boy missing in Arizona Emmett Trapp, is it a copycat case?
Aug 3, 2010
Melissa Finlay
Sylar Newton disappeared on July 25, 2010 and yesterday, authorities announced they believe the two-year-old boy is dead. Tonight, a second boy from the same area where Sylar went missing has disappeared: Emmett Trapp. Could it be the same abductor or is this a copy cat case?
Thanks, Julie. Now to wait for the autopsy results to see what he died of. There was no rain or flooding the night he disappeared.
Bless his little heart.
They've felt from early on he was dead before he left the campsite.
Very sad ending for that little boy.
Unless he had blunt force trauma, they may not be able to determine the cause of death due to the decomposition.
From what I understand, the sleeping arrangement was the custodial mother, her mother/custodial grandmother, a young toddler daughter in one tent and a 2 year old Syler with two 14 year olds in another tent.
B/S. But along those lines~
The two 14 year olds could have been rough housing and Syler got injured, or the two 14 year olds snuck out and Syler followed them.
However, if I were to go camping I would keep my little ones with me in my tent. The grandmother could have slept with one of the kids also.
So sad.
Skeletal remains believed to be missing Ariz. boy
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Skeletal remains found Tuesday near a central Arizona campground are believed to be that of a toddler reported missing in the area more than two weeks ago, and authorities say foul play is suspected.
The remains were found at the bottom of a wash less than 2 miles from the Beaver Creek Campground, where 2-year-old Sylar Newton of Flagstaff was last seen the night of July 24, Yavapai County sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said.
Authorities said it appeared someone tried to hide the remains, which ended up in the wash after recent flash flooding.
"Somebody didn't want us to find him," sheriff's Capt. David Rhodes said.
Calypso~ That was actually changed in the beginning to state Sylar was in the same tent as the adoptive Mom and Grandmother.
What I find interesting is Sylar was found by a family member. https://www.facebook.com/sylernewton?v=wall&story_fbid=104933962898527
A poster on another board announced either Sunday or Monday night it appeared the search was over, he had been announcing his own searches on the thread. He did not come out and say a body had been discovered or that he was the one who found it, yet LE did not announce the discovery until yesterday and stated the remains were discovered yesterday.
So was LE wrong or misleading? Or did this poster know something nobody else knew? His last posts have been deleted from that board, but if you read the quotes, you'll get the gist of what he posted.
I am so heartbroken. LE is stating that "someone didn't want this boy to be found" & that they believe that the water was the cause of him being found. What on earth could a two year old ever do, to deserve to be killed? By anyone! It's so sad, it really is.
I'll never understand what makes people do such terrible things. All the poor babies that are being murdered at the hands of those they are supposed to trust, whether it be family or anyone, it just breaks my heart.
How can someone look into those trusting little eyes and then do the things they do?
Must make them feel pretty powerful.
Sylar Newton case: Abusive treatment witnessed night of Sylar’s disappearance
Posted on August 22nd, 2010 by Valhall
Information is beginning to come out from the interviews of the campers who were near the Priem family campsite on the night Sylar Newton vanished into the Arizona darkness and wilderness. It is being reported that campers near the Priem family saw Christina Priem and/or her mother, Nancy Collins, being verbally abusive to Sylar the last day Sylar was seen alive. They even saw one of the women push the 2-year-old toddler to the ground that evening. The verbal abuse and the shove to the ground was reported to be “because he [Sylar] could not find his shoes”.
In addition to witnessing the verbally and physically abusive treatment of Sylar that evening, campers have stated they heard Sylar crying between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm that night, but did not hear the little boy again after that. Christina Priem claims Sylar went to bed in one of the family’s tents around this time and was later (around 12:45 a.m.) discovered missing.
Christina Priem’s 11-year-old daughter has told authorities that earlier in the evening Sylar was “staggering around” and then eventually could not be woken up. A friend of the family told detectives that he had been told Sylar got into Nancy’s “lockbox” and ingested a muscle relaxant. It appears the “lockbox” location at the campsite kind of wanders around according to who in the family was asked. Collins states it was kept in her car, while others in the family believe it may have been in the tent. Other news outlets are reporting Collins told investigators it was her purse she had the muscle relaxer in and that Sylar had gotten into it and swallowed “a prescription muscle relaxant”. Collins has admitted to investigators that this would not be the first time Sylar has gotten into her medication.
Both Christina and Nancy have told investigators they take methadone on a regular basis and Collins has admitted to smoking pot on July 24th, the last day Sylar was seen alive before his disappearanc., The records of the Flagstaff police department show both Christina and Nancy have “an extensive history with the police involving drugs, assult, child abuse and child neglect.”
Meanwhile Ms-let-me-pop-another-unwanted-baby-out-and-give/sell-it-to-someone-else Charity Newton, Sylar’s biological egg donor and apparent “have uterus, will deliver” baby factory on two legs (when she’s standing up) now says she didn’t know some of these new details coming out about Priem. Charity says, “she feels betrayed”. “I blame her 100 percent,” Charity stated, referring to Christina Priem, “She was trusted to take care of my son and obviously didn’t.” Yeah, Charity, why don’t you get over yourself. Guess what…the rest of the thinking world doesn’t view anybody in this tragedy known as Sylar’s short life as being “100% to blame”. You are to blame as well. But, don’t worry, Charity. In as little as 9 months you can produce yet another baby you won’t want. You will be able to give it (will it be baby number 5 or 6…it’s getting to hard to keep up) away (or are you selling them?), and get on down the road.
The search for justice for Sylar Newton
by Hannah Mullins - Sept. 9, 2010 06:19 AM
12 News
The devastation drags on for family members waiting for closure in the case of two-year-old Sylar Newton, who vanished near Rimrock on July 25th. He had been camping with his custodial mother, Christina Priem; along with Christina's mother, her two biological children and one of their friends. Priem says she went to sleep with Sylar by her side, but when she woke up the tent was unzipped, and the boy was gone.
Crews worked around the clock for weeks on a search that spanned nearly 20 square miles. Then, on August 2nd, the case turned criminal. Searchers scaled back rescue efforts and shifted to a recovery mission.
Another week went by, and as time passed, hope diminished. Sylar's distant cousin, Donnie Newton, remained steadfast in his own search. As a skilled tracker and hunter, Donnie said he followed birds to something he feared he would find, but hoped he wouldn't see. With a weak voice, Newton described his gruesome discovery in a river bed, "I started up the bottom. Pretty quick I smelled it, and I seen him."
What he saw, were a child's remains scattered about, and believed to be the boy's. "I'm going to see that boy for a long time in my dreams, I have a feeling." He added, "God help little Sylar. I hope justice comes quick."
The journey to find justice has been anything but quick. While the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office seems confident the boy was killed, no arrests have been made.
So, what's the holdup? A cause of death has not yet been determined, and the remains have not been positively identified. The Yavapai County medical examiner's office is running toxicology and DNA tests, which can take weeks, even months.
Christina Priem, who was acting as Sylar Newton's custodial parent when he disappeared from a campground in July, was arrested Monday on charges of involving a Minor in a Drug offense. In August, Sylar's remains were found outside the Beaver Creek Campground area.
According to Dwight D'Evelyn, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Media Coordinator, these charges stem from the investigation into Sylar's death. "It is an integral part [of the investigation] in light of the circumstances regarding Sylar's living conditions and events leading to his death," D'Evelyn writes in an email to Prescott eNews.
