Grandmother Arrested in Connection With Toddler's Death

The custodial grandmother of a 2-year-old boy found dead this summer at a northern Arizona campground has been arrested on a child abuse charge, according to reports. The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says charges against Nancy Collins and the boy's custodial mother, Christina Priem, "relate directly to events leading to Sylar Newton's death while in their custody." The boy was found dead in August.

Officers from the Flagstaff Police Department arrested Collins just after 10 a.m. Saturday morning on a child abuse warrant, and she was later booked, according to a report by MyFoxPhoenix.com.

Detectives had been searching for Collins since Thursday, and they said they found her at a motel in Flagstaff, according to MyFoxPhoenix.com.

I'm so glad they found her & arrested her!

This case thread has not been updated since December, 2010!

I was keeping the Sylar Newton case updated at The Hinky Meter.

Christina Priem and Nancy Collins both pled guilty.

The sentencing, for both Priem and Collins, was suppose to be today, 6-4-12. I've found an article referencing the sentencing but not stating what sentence has been handed down.

Perhaps it will in the AZ local media on Tuesday.

"It's not what we expected, but it is some justice for Sylar," said Laurie Fant of the Sylar Newton Foundation.

Thirty-seven-year-old Christina Priem, Sylar's adoptive mother, and Christina's own mother, Nancy Collins, were sentenced Monday by Judge Michael Bluff. Priem must serve 17 years in state prison, while 59-year-old Collins will serve lifetime probation.

Both were charged with child abuse after Sylar went missing and was found dead two weeks later in 2010.

The difference in sentences was enough that Priem's defense attorney Robert Gundacker stormed out of the courtroom. He had asked the judge to balance the sentences between mother and daughter. After all, he said, it was Collins who had the drugs and was responsible.
