LOGAN — The state finished presenting its witnesses in the murder trial of William Inman II on Friday, with Dr. Bryan Casto of the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office being the last to testify about the death of Summer Cook Inman.

William II, 27, has been charged in his estranged wife’s kidnapping and murder, specifically: two counts of aggravated murder, murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

Summer, 25, was kidnapped from behind Century National Bank on the night of March 22, 2011. Her body was found one week later in the septic tank of Faith Tabernacle Church near Nelsonville. She had been bound by three zip ties around her wrists, another around her neck, and was placed head first in the tank.

Casto determined the cause of Summer’s death to be strangulation caused by the zip tie around her neck, which was fastened so tightly if left marks on her skin after it was removed.

“It’s so tight, you cannot see it. That’s how deeply it was applied to the neck; the skin [hung] over it,” Casto explained in an autopsy photo shown to the jury.

The defense will have the opportunity to call witnesses before closing arguments are made Monday. The jury may begin deliberations as early as Monday afternoon. The trial will continue at 9 a.m. in Hocking County Common Pleas Court. The jury may be sequestered Monday if deliberations begin (see related story).

Friday, the state finished presenting its witnesses. The defense will have the opportunity to call witnesses Monday before closing arguments are made. William Inman, II was found guilty as charged. The jury deliberated 2 hours Monday afternoon and about 2 hours this morning. The verdict was reached around 10:30 a.m today. The reporter (see video at Linked article below) said Inman showed no emotion when the verdict was read.

The mitigation phase of the trial starts Thursday at 9 a.m.

Per the reporter, it is when we will get to hear about Inman's past and it will also be considered if Inman gets the death penalty. The following Linked article includes a video.

LOGAN, Ohio (AP) — A man whose estranged wife was found strangled in a septic tank last year was convicted Tuesday of aggravated murder and other charges in her death.

A Hocking County jury in Logan deliberated for about four hours before finding William Inman II guilty in the death of his 25-year-old wife, Summer. Authorities said she was abducted in Logan on March 22, 2011, then strangled with a zip tie and dumped in an underground septic tank behind a church in nearby Athens County.

The 27-year-old Inman also was found guilty of single counts of kidnapping, tampering with evidence and gross abuse of a corpse. Inman, who didn't testify in his trial, could face the death penalty when he's sentenced.

Inman Sentenced to Life with No Parole

After approximately 90 minutes of deliberation Thursday, jury members informed the judge they were deadlocked on the question of whether to sentence Inman to death or life in prison.

The judge then instructed the jury to continue deliberations, while considering, and ultimately choosing from, three life sentence options: life without parole, parole eligibility after 25 years, or parole eligibility after 30 years.

The jury ultimately decided that a possibility of parole was not appropriate given the nature of Inman's crime.

LOGAN — Attorneys for William Inman II have made a motion requesting a new trial for their client, who was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole for the 2011 kidnapping and murder of his estranged wife Summer Cook Inman.

The motion was made Tuesday by William II’s defense counsel, Herman Carson and Jerry McHenry. According to the motion, the request for a new trial is based on the failure of the state of Ohio to disclose information that one of its witnesses has a prior felony conviction.

Sandra pleaded guilty Thursday to murder, kidnapping, tampering with evidence, and gross abuse of a corpse.

Judge John Wallace sentenced her to 15 years to life in prison.

LOGAN — Sandra Inman has pleaded guilty to the 2011 kidnapping and murder of her daughter-in-law Summer Cook Inman and was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

The plea deal came after negotiations with Sandra's attorney, Kristin Burkett, and the state Monday. The deal was discussed with and agreed upon by Summer's family.

Sandra sobbed during the entire change of plea hearing, but admitted her guilt to the court. When she had the chance to speak, she turned in her seat and issued an apology to Summer's mother and father, Debbie and Mike Cook, and the rest of her family present.

There's no excuse for what she did, however her husband is a very scary and abusive person.

He'll be on trial later this year, I hope he gets the DP.

He's too arrogant to plead guilty. IMO.

This murder happened 30 miles south from where I live.

It will be interesting to see if Sandra's pleading guilty today will in anyway affect the appeal of her son or the upcoming trial of her husband. It should cause some problems with both cases.

If the mother in law's name is Sandra, why is it listed as Susan in the title of this thread? That is very confusing!

CA Lady, it won't. I assume you mean the Motion that was filed by William Inman, II's attorneys the other day requesting a new trial. They are claiming the State failed to disclose information about a witness. If so, Sandra Inman's plea deal has no bearing on William Inman's (II) case.

Ann - You are right on William II's appeal. It really doesn't have anthing to do with it, but with his mother pleading guilty, the public is aware. I can't imagine his attorney would want a new trial if he won the appeal.

A judge has denied a change of venue request for a man accused of kidnapping and killing his daughter-in-law.

The attorneys for William Inman Sr. filed the motion of a change of venue, claiming that widespread and detailed media coverage would have prevented a fair and impartial jury in Hocking County.

Judge John T. Wallace denied the request, but no further information was released.

After two days of questioning 65 potential jurors, 59 had been excused from serving.

LOGAN (AP) -- Prosecutors won't be allowed to make oral arguments in the appeal of an Ohio man convicted of murdering his estranged wife, who was found strangled in a septic tank.

An Ohio appeals court magistrate made the ruling after the prosecution missed a court deadline for filing a brief in the appeal of William Inman II.

Inman was convicted of aggravated murder and other charges last year in Hocking County and sentenced to life in prison without parole in 25-year-old Summer Inman's slaying.

He's seeking a new trial.

They also ask about their dad, William A. “Will” Inman II; their “Papaw,” William A. “Bill” Inman; and their “Nana,” Sandra K. Inman, all imprisoned for their mother’s murder.

Summer’s parents — Debra and Michael Cook — answer their grandchildren’s questions truthfully but carefully, often consulting the counselor whom 7-year-old Alex and 5-year-old Kaley visit regularly. Alanna, now 3 1/2, does not ask as many questions.
