(CBS/WUSA/AP) ROCKVILLE, Md. - The estranged husband of slain mother, Jane McQuain, was arrested in North Carolina on Thursday and charged with first-degree murder, but police are still searching for her missing 11-year-old son William.

Remains of missing Md. boy William McQuain believed found

(CBS/WUSA/AP) CLARKSBURG, Md. - Montgomery County police say they believe they've found the remains of William McQuain, the 11-year-old boy whose mother, Jane McQuain, was found dead last week.

Police discovered the remains of a young, African-American boy at 9:11 a.m. Tuesday in wooded area of the county. Authorities began searching for William after his mother was found dead Wednesday night in the bedroom of her home in Germantown, about 30 miles northwest of Washington.

Remains found in Maryland confirmed to be missing 11-year-old William McQuain

(CBS/AP) CLARKSBURG, Md. -- Maryland police confirmed Wednesday that the body of a young boy found on Tuesday is that of 11-year-old William McQuain, who had been missing for over two weeks.

The remains were found in a rural area of Montgomery County, Md., by a dog handler. Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said the boy's body is believed to have been at the rural location where it was found Tuesday since Oct. 1.

Man indicted on charges of killing Germantown woman, son in October

Woman found beaten, stabbed to death; 11-year-old son found six days later in woods

A North Carolina man police believe murdered his estranged wife and her 11-year-old son in October was indicted Thursday by a Montgomery County grand jury.

Curtis Maurice Lopez, 45, will now be tried for two charges each of first-degree murder and kidnapping, as well as a single charge of robbery, said Montgomery County Deputy State's Attorney John Maloney, who is prosecuting the case.

Lopez was arrested in Charlotte, N.C., on Oct. 13, one day after his estranged wife, 51-year-old Jane McQuain, was found beaten and stabbed to death in her Germantown apartment. The body of her son, William McQuain, was found Oct. 18 in the woods about 100 yards from a Clarksburg gas station after a six-day search by police.

Curtis Lopez convicted in death of William McQuain and his mother

Hours after he slammed a 30-pound dumbbell into his estranged wife’s head, prosecutors say Curtis Lopez had a decision to make: Flee the Washington area immediately or stick around and pick up the slain woman’s son, who had spent the night at a buddy’s house.

The second option would keep the 11-year-old boy from coming home and discovering the crime, buying Lopez more time.

The chilling account of what happened next was laid out by prosecutors in Montgomery County Circuit Court on Friday as Lopez acknowledged that there was sufficient evidence to convict him of two counts of first-degree murder in a case dating to the autumn of 2011.

...Lopez is expected to offer his version of events when he returns to court in April to be sentenced. Prosecutors will ask Judge Mary Beth McCormick to sentence him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A Maryland judge did not mince words while sentencing the man who murdered his wife and 11-year-old son in 2011, calling Curtis Lopez "monstrous" while sending him to prison for the rest of his life.

Judge Mary Beth McCormack said that it was a shame Maryland no longer had capital punishment, though., when it came to this case.

Lopez, who entered an Alford plea in the slaying of his estranged wife, Jane McQuain, and their 11-year-old son, William, was handed two life sentences Monday with no possibility of parole.
