Who killed Jessica? Body of girl, 13, found dumped in baseball dugout after she was battered, stabbed and throttled to death
-Jessica Funk-Haslam last seen leaving her house at night following argument with her mother
-Mother: Daughter's death may have involved 'at least one girlfriend'
-Witness saw male and a young girl near dugout on night she was killed
Ex-boyfriend: Jessica had been hanging out with the wrong crowd.
A 13-year-old girl was stabbed, beaten and strangled before her body was dumped in a baseball dugout, it emerged today.
Jessica Funk-Haslam was found by a passer-by at the Rosemont Community Park in Sacramento on Tuesday.

Awe Deb, she's on my mind a lot also. We are from the same area, I always look on the local stations but it seems everything has gone quiet.

Still hoping something turns up.
They have the child, the time frame, some security footage, a few voice witnesses. Surely they have some DNA? Will we have to wait until this person finally has DNA on file with another crime?

I still think of this young girl. All of the DNA samples they sent off would have been back by now so I take it they still have nothing.

I found an article from July. The Sheriff's office claims the case hasn't gone gold, but Jessica's father fears that it has. They are still analyzing evidence, but unfortunately they were never able to get the person in the home surveillance video identified.
Father Of Murdered Sacramento Girl Fears Case Has Gone Cold

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – It’s been four months since someone discovered the body of 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam inside a baseball dugout, but Sacramento County sheriff’s investigators have not made an arrest.
“I know there’s somebody out there who knows something,” said Allen Porter, Funk-Haslam’s father.
Each day Porter waits for the call from investigators saying they’ve arrested his daughter’s killer. And each day since Funk-Haslam’s death, he’s more worried someone may get away with murder.

Considering everything that young girl went through, beaten, stabbed and strangled, you would think there would be some kind of DNA on her.
Unless there is a match to DNA stored in CODIS, I really don't see how they can find a suspect(s).
I have a hard time thinking that only one person did this.

SACRAMENTO—
Six months after her body was discovered in a Rosemont-area park, Sacramento County Sheriff’s detectives have little to go on in their investigation into Jessica Funk-Haslam’s death.
Deputy Jason Ramos told FOX40 Tuesday afternoon that there are no people of interest in the investigation. Detectives have followed up on more than 325 leads in the case, according to Ramos, of which none have panned out.
Ramos added that 200 homes in the area were canvased and no new useful information was gained.

They apparently have the vid of Jessica AND the home surveillance vid of a person running down the street away from the park, IIRC. Surely that home vid could have been enhanced, measurements taken, etc. ???

One-Year Memorial for Jessica Funk-Haslam to be Held Thursday
http://rosemont.patch.com/articles/one-year-memorial-for-jessica-funk-haslam-to-be-held-thursday
No clues, No Suspects... My heart breaks for her and her parents. I wish things were different for them and they could get some justice but it doesn't appear it will ever happen.
Rosemont residents want to show they haven't forgotten about Jessica Funk-Haslam, and this week will hold a vigil to mark the one-year anniversary of her death.
The memorial will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Rosemont Community Park, near the covered picnic tables.
Sacramento County Sheriff's Department officials will be present, and a comment on the event's page on Patch encourages attendees to wear pink or zebra-print.
"We will be letting off pink heart luminaries into the sky and encourage everyone to wear pink zebra to show support to find the killer. We will never forget," Treva Kelly wrote.

Jessica Funk-Haslam
SACRAMENTO-
There is hope from the lead detective that the murder of 13-year-old Jessica Funk Haslam will be solved.
“I don’t feel that it’s gonna be an unsolved case in any way,” Sacramento County Sheriff’s Detective Paul Belli said. “We continue to get tips every day, certainly weekly.”
And evidence collected and analyzed has investigators releasing this detail for the first time.
“Based upon the crime scene and the evidence we have gathered, I don’t believe it was a stranger,” Belli said.

Considering the overkill, I would think it is someone she was familiar with also. It just whether or not anyone from her circle would have an idea that would help.
When my cousin got murdered his case went cold ASAP. If it weren't for a tip line and concerned friends, concerned that the killer was going to hurt them also, it would have gone nowhere.
I really have no idea why that young girl tugs at me.

SACRAMENTO, CA - A 23-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder of a Rosemont girl nearly a year and a half ago is facing a murder charge.
Ryan Douglas Roberts was arraigned on one count of first-degree murder in Sacramento Superior Court Friday. He was arrested late Wednesday in the death of 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam whose body was found in Rosemont Community Park on March 6, 2012. Ryan Douglas Roberts, 23, appeared for his arraignment at 1:30 p.m. in a Sacramento County courtroom, but the hearing was continued because Roberts didn't have a lawyer.

Roberts faces an open murder charge in a case that had gone cold. DNA evidence led investigators to the Sacramento man earlier this week, officials said in a news conference Thursday.

Was he the unidentified male seen running on the residential back yard surveillance tape?
Despite the reports this perp has no "past history" IMO, he does have a past history: He abused his girl friend/wife...That was the reason he had the DNA in the system.
Does it really matter IF a perp has a past history?
They each start with the first one...
IF we are lucky, they are caught, arrested, convicted, and removed from the community.
But it starts with ONE.

Freckles, I believe what they meant was that he didn't kill anyone (as far as they know) before he was arrested and charged with Jessica's murder. He certainly has a history of violence that very possibly escalated into murder.
There is always "a first time', no one knows what he has done before he was arrested. Many serial killers get caught after they have committed several murders, no one ever suspected them or believed they were capable of committing murder because they appeared seemingly "normal".

Case against Rosemont girl's alleged killer is 'very weak,' lawyer says
September 20, 2013
By Andy Furillo
afurillo@sacbee.com
The lawyer for the man accused of murder in the death of a 13-year-old girl in Rosemont Community Park last year said in court Friday that the evidence against her client is "very weak."
Defense attorney Jennifer Mouzis made the characterization in a brief appearance by Ryan Douglas Roberts in Sacramento Superior Court.
The 23-year-old defendant is charged in the March 6, 2012, stabbing, beating and asphyxiation death of Jessica Funk-Haslam, whose body was found in a dugout on a baseball diamond in the park.
Authorities said they charged Roberts, who was arrested last month, based on DNA that was obtained from the homicide scene. His DNA had been put into a statewide database after his arrest in May on suspicion of domestic violence. No charges were filed in the domestic violence case,.

Authorities said they charged Roberts, who was arrested last month, based on DNA that was obtained from the homicide scene. His DNA had been put into a statewide database after his arrest in May on suspicion of domestic violence. No charges were filed in the domestic violence case,.

Man pleads not guilty to killing Jessica Funk-Haslam
Ryan Roberts appeared in court Friday
Published 4:30 PM PST Jan 24, 2014
Ryan Roberts appeared in a Sacramento County court Friday. He was arrested in August 2013 after police found significant DNA evidence that they said links Roberts to the crime. Roberts' DNA was in a database already because of a domestic violence charge from May 2013, and a DUI arrest from 2009. wrote:

Note:
Jessica was found murdered in 2012.
The DNA from suspect was entered into database in 2009 and in 2013.
I am guessing it was from the 2013 DNA entry the 2012 murder was linked to this individual.

Trial ordered for man accused in killing of girl in baseball dugout
July 17, 2014
Nine cigarette butts and a couple of apparent lies to the cops led a judge Thursday to order a murder trial for Ryan Roberts in the killing of Jessica Funk-Haslam in Rosemont two years ago.
DNA on one of the smoked-down Camel 99s in and around the dugout of a youth baseball diamond at Rosemont Community Park came back most definitively as a match to the 13-year-old girl who was asphyxiated, beaten and stabbed in the neck. Two others came back with strong likelihood as a match to the 24-year-old defendant who worked in restaurants from midtown to Rancho Cordova. Six of the cigarettes contained genetic contributions from both of them.
... Two of Roberts’ best friends upended key portions of his alibi.
One of them, identified as a Rosemont area man named Jimelle Moore, said that he and Roberts were in the park and that they saw Jessica sitting on a swing and spoke to her as it was getting dark the last night she was alive. Her body was found in the dugout around 6:30 a.m. the next day.

August trial date set in teen’s 2012 slaying
June 9, 2015
The attorney for the man held in the 2012 killing of a 13-year-old girl in Rosemont Community Park won more time to prepare her client’s defense, pushing the start of Ryan Douglas Roberts’ murder trial to August.
...“It isn’t as though the case has remained static,” Mouzis said. “It’s more important to swallow my pride and say I’m not ready. This is a massive case – the amount of evidence, DNA evidence. This is not a frivolous claim.”
...Still, Wood was eager for the trial to proceed. He granted the delay, ordering the trial to begin Aug. 3 in Sacramento Superior Court, but said Monday’s continuance would be the last.
