Penn State sanctions: $60M, bowl ban
"In the Penn State case, the results were perverse and unconscionable," Emmert said.
"No price the NCAA can levy with repair the damage inflicted by Jerry Sandusky on his victims," he said, referring to the former Penn State defensive coordinator convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse last month.
The NCAA said the $60 million was equivalent to the average annual revenue of the football program. The NCAA ordered Penn State to pay the penalty funds into an endowment for "external programs preventing child sexual abuse or assisting victims and may not be used to fund such programs at the university."
With the wins from 1998-2011 vacated, Paterno moves from 409 wins to 298, dropping him from first to 12th on the winningest NCAA football coach list. Penn State will also have six bowl wins and two conference championships erased.

It's good to see SOMEONE standing up for the Victim's! I was thinking this morning about how Sandusky's attorney's didn't even want the sexual abuse victim's to be called "victim's."
It was good to see Paterno's statue come down over the weekend imo. It's a new day for Penn State starting w/Sandusky's conviction, today another chapter for consequences to the football program, hopefully soon, charges for those that covered up the sexual abuse. jmo.

Thanks for the links, Art. These sanctions from NCAA are stronger than I imagined and appropriate (IMO). ~~C

WOW. Too late, but WOW.
Unfortunately a lot of innocent people that had nothing to do with the appalling and unforgiveable criminial activity that went on at PSU for over a decade will loose their jobs, their scholarships, etc. It's a shame any way you look at it.
I'm glad they took that damned statue down. What a disgrace.

I agree, the sanctions were greater than I anticipated too, but, damn, it had to be done, imo. It's just a freaking football program, one that enabled a pediphile to prey on the weakest & most vunerable victim's. The NCAA held Penn State responsible as they should have, they too have made sure EVERY university gets it, consequences for those that participate in the coverup of unconscienable behavior by a member of the staff of a university. KUDOS to the NCAA for taking this stand.
I am too tired of seeing athlete's getting a slap on the wrist for bad behavior, like in the Micheal Vick case, a few years off to prison, then gets paroled & his livelyhood back playing football for mega bucks.
It seems football is becoming about the money before anything else. Paterno wanted to empasis the importance of the educational program at Penn State & his name is going to remain on the library because he raised most of those funds himself to build it so I don't think it is going to be changed. Paterno didn't seem to feel an obligation to the victims, imo, that is going to be his legacy.
List of Sanctions:
• $60 million fine
• Vacation of wins from 1998-2011 (112 wins)*
• Four-year postseason ban
• Players may transfer and play immediately at other schools
• Athletic department on probation for five years
*Joe Paterno record now 298-136-3; fifth on FBS all-time list

A portion of Art's comment snipped:

I agree Art, it's something that has to be done. The alumni will have to pay the price for allowing JP to become powerful beyond all reason.
My heart hurts for all the good people who didn't know what was going on and worked hard for this school. I hope they don't let this define their lives.

My comments in this color:
So the football players may transfer and play immediately at other schools: What happens to the players that can't find another university, the schools they turned down to get to play at Penn State? This whole debacle affects so many people that don't deserve this mess. Whether you're a football fan or not, the players sure didn't sign up for this.
Of course, I don't think this even begins to heal the victims. Maybe, I really don't know. ~~C
Wonder if this stat (*) will in any way change his pension? Probably not but just the thought of JP's re-negotiation of his retirement pkg just before he was fired just irks me. No, it sickens me. (same w/Sandusky's wife but that's another topic)art tart wrote:I agree, the sanctions were greater than I anticipated too, but, damn, it had to be done, imo. BBM. Yes indeed and the NCAA made their position loud and clear. Several people at Penn State put a friggin football program AND the whole university's future ($$) at stake. Penn State's entire reputation is now tarnished and they expect alumni donations to continue to bail them out? But I agree with ArtTart: it had to be done.

So the Paterno family is probably just furious right now. In the Q&A portion, the NCAA spokesperson (name?) said something to the effect that the Freeh report is what they used since it had more information than they would have collected in an NCAA investigation. First LP's statue was removed and now the NCAA used the same report that they don't agree with. Maybe it's time for them to drop it, for the sake of LP's beloved university (lil bit of sarcasm s/b inserted here).

Re: Penn State sanctions: $60M, bowl ban
That's a good point about JoePa's retirement being affected, but it was negotiated through his families attorney & Penn State Attorney's, his family probably gets to keep all of it as it was I assume like a contract, a payout over so many years. (I am just speculating about that)
Several had made the point that innocent people affillated w/Penn State through donations, attending school & former alum, football player's, player's that attended those championship games, people interested in education & making donations to Penn State had absolutely nothing to do with this scandal. It's unfortuate that they too are suffering from the fallout & will for years to come but imo, this had to be done to set the standard of ZERO tolerance in the future of any University that tries to pull anything dishonest, fraudulent, or sadly sexual in nature.
I bet Penn State is devastated. The 60 million owed in fines, plus, the Civil Suit is going to be financially devastating, it's hard to see how they can overcome the financial loss as I wouldn't make a donation to them if I had in the past. It seems the climate for donations is going to be grossly affected, just think, INSTEAD of your donation going to Penn State for education, it appears monies are going to go to the Victim's, their attorney's, & fines. I heard a legal commentator say that the Civil Attorney's work is nearly done, they can just use Louie's blistering report, assigning blame to Penn State & calling them out, those judgments for each victim may be in the milliions, each. In my State, there is a cap of $ 500,000.00 for a Civil Suit, but many States don't have caps, Fla. is a State that allows huge Judgements in Civil Cases.

I am not surprise that more students did not support the punishment for what happen at the school. It just seems to me that the body of Penn State seems to think that they should have gotten a slap on the wrist.
I really wish that I would have heard more about how this cover up that involved young boys should not have happen by anyone at Penn State so they could see why there was a great need for punishment. I don't expect much change from this school.

Penn State Scandal: My Statement To The Paterno Family
Your dad, Jerry Sandusky, Graham Spanier, Bill Curley, Gary Schultz. They broke the rules. Now, they pay. And they're bringing a whole lot of innocent people with them, too. And yet you're the ones who can't get to a keyboard fast enough to start banging out these ridiculous proclamations every time you feel wronged? Your arrogance is galling.

Interesting comments shared by some in entertainments on Paterno:
Jamie Lee Curtis: Hindsight
"If I knew then what I know now" doesn't count for Paterno or Penn State. There is no excuse. There is no apology. Just tell the truth. The truth is what we all want and they should all spend the rest of their lives working on behalf of the victims and their recovery.
Michael Smerconish: The Remaining Penn State Question
Regardless of what level of detail he was provided, in my opinion there is no exculpatory explanation to be offered on Paterno's behalf. Maybe that's why he released a statement last weekend when the story broke, before this week's events led to his firing.
Marlo Thomas: Joe Paterno: The Clock Has Run Out
Sometimes life comes down to a few key moments. A path taken -- or not taken. Sadly for Joe Paterno, a life richly filled with good choices will forever be stained with one, inconceivable decision.
Peter Wolson: The Joe Paterno Syndrome: Idealization and the Corruption of Morality
Joe Paterno was an idealized father-figure, a loving, strong protective model for his young football players and Penn State students. Unfortunately, he failed to follow his own advice, to maintain civility, by protecting his own students.

Re: Penn State sanctions: $60M, bowl ban
Before the Freeh report, it seems Penn State had tthe second biggest year for donations.
From article:
Typically, donations to athletic donations take a hit when the crisis’ epicenter is in the athletic department, said Rae Goldsmith, vice president at the nonprofit Council for Advancement and Support of Education in Washington, D.C.
"There is traditionally a pretty specific division between giving to academics and giving to athletics," said Goldsmith. "When a crisis hits athletics you can see a hit to giving for athletics but not to academic programs."
On July 9, the university announced that a record number of individual donors had contributed a total dollar amount that was second highest in university history — $208.7 million — during the 2011-2012 fiscal year. That included money for the Nittany Lions.
http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/24/12930009-penn-state-faces-more-fallout-from-sex-abuse-scandal?lite
I guess Penn State does have the money to satisfy the 60 million dollar fine & the Civil Suits of the victim's. imo, Penn State is going to be hard pressed to recieve this type of donations in years to come, the donations were made before the Freeh report was made public.

NCAA to Paterno family: Don't bother appealing
By GENARO C. ARMAS

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Joe Paterno's family said it planned to appeal the sanctions imposed by the NCAA against Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. The governing body's response: Don't bother.
Family lawyer Wick Sollers in a letter sent Friday to the NCAA said the Paternos would like to appeal the "enormous damage" done to Penn State, the community, athletes and the late Hall of Fame coach. He died in January at age 85.
But the NCAA quickly rejected their plan. "The Penn State sanctions are not subject to appeal," spokesman Bob Williams said.

IMO the Paterno's family need to shut up, if their dad would have called the police when he was told about what happen in the shower than more kids would have been protected. How can they say what Joe did or did not do they were not in school with him. IMO they add insult to injury and they need to stop.

snowbird, I agree, not many give a rat's ass what JoePa's family thinks or says & that includes their hired mouthpiece attorney, imo. After all, they are conducting their own investigation challenging the Freeh report, a desperate attempt to vindicate Paterno.
The family is damn lucky to have negotiated the millions in Paterno's retirement BEFORE this information came out about Paterno having full knowledge of the Pediphile that he covered for. imo, they inflame the public more, they should just go away & spend their millions OR they could donate some of those millions to Penn State to help offset what is owed in FINES & to the victim's of Sandusky.
Hopefully, MORE charges are in the works.
Paterno's retirement! Joe Paterno earned $13.4M pension
Joe Paterno earned a state pension of $13.4 million for his 61-year coaching career at Penn State.
Paterno's family said Tuesday through a spokesman that Paterno's widow, Sue, would receive an initial payment of $10.1 million by the end of May, with the rest to be paid out over the next two years.

Yeah, now 4 trustees are going to sue the NCAA and eventually file a federal lawsuit against the NCAA. :/
Yup, Penn State sure is taking responsibility for it's inaction over the years. :/
