Man held on $2 million bond in Evelyn Miller case

CHARLES CITY, Iowa —

Bond is set at $2 million for a man charged with killing Evelyn Miller in 2005.

Casey Frederiksen made his initial court appearance in Floyd County on Tuesday.

WEBSTER CITY — A Hamilton County jury took a little more than five hours to reach a verdict in the first degree murder and first degree sexual abuse trial of Casey Frederiksen. That verdict was guilty on both counts in the 10-year-old case.

The case went to the jury shortly after noon on Tuesday following a morning of closing arguments.

Jurors convicted Frederiksen, 35, of both sexually assaulting and then murdering Evelyn Miller, 5, of Floyd in 2005.

CHARLES CITY, Ia. — An Iowa man convicted in the killing of his former girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison.

Along with Monday's sentencing of 36-year-old Casey Frederiksen, a motion for a new trial was denied. Jurors found him guilty in March of first-degree sexual assault and first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Evelyn Miller while babysitting her in 2005.

WAVERLY | Extensive news coverage of Casey Frederiksen's arrest, trial and conviction for murder and sex abuse make finding an impartial jury for a separate, unrelated case impossible, according to his defense attorney.

...Frederiksen is facing one count of assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor.

...While in the Bremer County Jail, Frederiksen allegedly put a fellow inmate, Kyle Hoins, in a choke hold. According to court documents, Hoins lost consciousness. The pair apparently got into an argument over the remote control for a television in the jail.

Assistant County Attorney Jill Dashner filed the assault charge on Frederiksen in January 2014. A conviction is punishable by up to a year in jail.

...Trial is set to begin Aug. 6 in Bremer County.
