CHISAGO CITY, Minn. - Chisago County deputies are investigating the reported disappearance of an Oakdale woman who hasn't been seen or heard from since Sunday.

Sheriff Rick Duncan confirms his department is looking at the circumstances surrounding Danielle Jelinek's disappearence as a missing person case.

The department received a call from Jelinek's family on Sunday afternoon and went on a welfare check to a residence in Chisago Lake Township where she was last seen.

CHISAGO LAKE TOWNSHIP, Minn. (KMSP) - A ground search is got underway Wednesday for 27-year-old Danielle Jelinek, a missing Cottage Grove woman who was last seen Saturday in Chisago Lake Township.

The search was suspended at 5 p.m., but it's not done. Nearby Moody Lake may be searched as a last resort.

Jelinek was last seen Saturday afternoon in the area of Lofton Avenue and 261st Street in Chisago. She is not believed to have her car or any of her personal items.

A ground search was organized by the Chisago County Sheriff's Office and emergency management in the area. More than 100 people showed up to search the snowy, hilly landscape Wednesday afternoon.

Distraught family members searched in deep snow Wednesday and issued a public plea for help finding a 27-year-old Oakdale woman missing since Sunday.

Danielle Jelinek, who is from Cottage Grove but had recently been living with her sister, was last seen at the home of a 28-year-old man in Chisago Lake Township, said Rick Duncan, Chisago County sheriff. Deputies had been called to check on her welfare, and were unable to find her.

Jelinek's car and belongings -- including shoes, purse, cellphone and car keys -- were still at the home, leading to searches of the area, Duncan said. Dogs and a State Patrol helicopter also were used.

The man is being held in jail pending possible charges of drug possession and violation of probation in Anoka County.

New search organized for missing Oakdale woman

CHISAGO CITY, Minn. - The Chisago County Sheriff's Office will be conducting a new coordinated search Thursday afternoon for a missing Oakdale woman.  

Danielle Jelinek, 27, was last seen at a bar in Minneapolis Saturday night, and hasn't been heard from since. She was last seen with a man from Chisago County; Deputies searched his home and found some of Danielle's belongings.

That man, described as a on-and-off boyfriend, was arrested and jailed for drug possession. Investigators have tried to question him about Jelinek's whereabouts, but say he is not cooperating.

Friends and family of Danielle Jelinek continued their search Thursday for the Oakdale woman who went missing last weekend, reportedly without her coat, purse or asthma inhaler.

The second day of the search ended without success after more than three hours of scouring the rural Chisago County area -- now swampy and covered with wet snow -- near where Jelinek was reportedly last seen.

Jelinek, 27, was reported missing Sunday by family members who say she would not voluntarily disappear. They suspect foul play. Sheriff officials say they've found no signs of such.

Search for missing Oakdale woman resumes in Chisago County

Authorities and the family of Danielle Jelinek are asking for the public’s help in locating the 27-year-old Oakdale woman.

Jelinek left a private residence in Chisago City on foot in the early morning hours on Sunday, Dec. 9, and has not been seen or heard from since. Because no one has heard from her, authorities are concerned for her welfare, according to a crime alert released by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Meantime, authorities are asking people to keep an eye out for Danielle on their properties or other places someone might seek shelter. They and family members are urging anyone with information about Danielle’s disappearance or whereabouts to call 911 or the Chicago County Sheriff’s Office at 651-257-4100.

WOODBURY, Minn. (WCCO) – Danielle Jelinek was remembered Monday night, more than a week after she disappeared. Without an arrest in the case, Danielle’s friends and family are praying for answers.

Schnagl told investigators they were drinking and doing drugs the night before Jelinek went missing, and that she stayed over and was gone in the morning.

According to court documents, Schnagl texted one of Jelinek’s friends, “Danielle she took off on foot last night she was all messed up it’s snowing I’m worried.”

Three days later, investigators received a call from a concerned citizen claiming Schnagl had told someone Jelinek had overdosed. Schnagl hasn’t been cooperating with authorities, who say parts of his story keep changing.

A vigil for missing Cottage Grove native Danielle Jelinek drew hundreds to an area church Monday evening.

An estimated 450 people turned out for a prayer service at Five Oaks Community Church. Following the private service, many joined on the church’s front steps for a candlelight vigil. They sang “Silent Night” and encircled Jelinek’s relatives and close friends.

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — It wasn’t like Danielle Jelinek to just disappear.

The Cottage Grove native was living with her sister Cory in another Twin Cities suburb, Oakdale, and would talk frequently with family, relatives said.
Then Jelinek went missing early Sunday, Dec. 9, from the home of an acquaintance in rural Chisago County north of the Cities.

Chisago County Sheriff Rick Duncan said authorities continue to investigate, while acknowledging there has been no evidence found pointing to Jelinek’s whereabouts.

“I tell the family to keep their hopes up,” Duncan said Monday. “We haven’t found anything that tells us she’s deceased, but I’m also letting them know to be prepared. You have to be prepared.”

Breaking their silence for the first time, the family of Aaron Schnagl, the only person of interest in the disappearance of an Oakdale woman, says he is "not capable" of hurting his on-again, off-again girlfriend, and that they "pray that she's safe," nine days after she went missing.

"They have made him look like a monster. And he is not a monster," Theresa Langevin said of her cousin, Aaron, in an exclusive interview with 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

"He is probably one of the most caring, compassionate people you will ever meet in your life."

Maplewood: Police inspect storage unit as part of search for Oakdale woman

Police looked for a missing Oakdale woman, Danielle Jelinek, in a storage unit in Maplewood rented to the mother of Jelinek's on-again, off-again boyfriend, according to a search warrant filed in Ramsey County District Court.

The search warrant affidavit said Schnagl told police he spent the evening of Dec. 8 with Jelinek and they went back to his home, had numerous drinks, had sex and went to bed together at 2:30 a.m. Dec. 9.

When he woke up at 9:30 a.m., Jelinek was gone, Schnagl told investigators.

The warrant affidavit also includes allegations by Jelinek's sister that Schnagl had previously physically abused her.

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. (WCCO) – Danielle Jelinek’s mother and sister talked to WCCO about the prime suspect in her December 9 disappearance, as well as how they’re coping with the possibility of not having her home for Christmas.

When your daughter is missing, time does not make things easier. Janice Jelinek can’t stop thinking of her daughter. She is consumed with emotion.

“I miss her smell. I mean, I sleep with her robe. I won’t let anybody touch her room at home,” Janice said.

Oakdale woman is still missing, but ground search called off

It's been nearly three weeks since anyone saw Danielle Jelinek.

Chisago County sheriff's investigators continue to follow up on tips, but ground search efforts have been called off.

"We're still following up on leads that come into the office every day," said investigator Ryan Edmonds. "But there's nothing that seems too promising at this point. Some of them are pretty far-fetched."

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The search for a missing 27-year-old woman continued Sunday, as dive teams comb a lake near where she was last seen.

The family of Danielle Jelinek sent a photo of the Washington County dive team searching Bone Lake. Authorities said Monday they didn’t find any trace of Jelinek.

FOREST LAKE, Minn. (KMSP) - A Washington County dive team found no trace of Danielle Jelinek in their search of Bone Lake on Dec. 31.

Jelinek, 27, has been missing for a month. She was last seen Saturday, Dec. 8 in the area of Lofton Avenue and 261st Street in Chisago. Bone Lake is south of Chisago, between Forest Lake and Scandia.

Aaron Schnagl, who was jailed on unrelated drug charges, was the last person who reported seeing Jelinek. He said he saw her at his house on the morning of Dec. 9 after a night out in Minneapolis.

CENTER CITY, Minn. (KNSI) A reward is being offered in the case of an Oakdale woman missing for more than a month.

The Chisago County sheriff's office says CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the disappearance of 27-year-old Danielle Jelinek.

Jelinek was reported missing on December 9th after she disappeared from a home in Chisago Lakes Township.

The sheriff's office says it continues to interview people and search areas of interest.

Jan Jelinek, of Cottage Grove, last spoke to her youngest daughter, Danielle, on Saturday, Dec. 8. The 27-year-old called about a new town house in Woodbury that she was interested in and work she wanted done on her car that day.

Older daughter Cory, 31, of Oakdale, heard a different story. She was under the impression that her sister was going to hang out at a female friend’s house that night. After all, the daughters and their mother were close, and they never let the sun set on a day without a call, e-mail or text about their plans and life in general.

Then they didn’t hear from Danielle, who never stopped by her friend’s house. Rather, she visited the home of 28-year-old Aaron Jude Schnagl, with whom she had an on-again, off-again relationship, in Chisago Lake Township.

Family of Missing Oakdale Woman Declares 'Do Good for Dani Day'

In honor of Danielle Jelinek's birthday, her family is asking the community to do small acts of kindness on Feb. 1.

It's almost Danielle Jelinek's birthday and her family knows how they want to celebrate it.

Danielle, who was reported missing on Dec. 9, turns 28 years old on Friday.

Danielle is known for always putting a smile on someone's face, whether that person was a stranger or a close friend, said Cory Jelinek, Danielle's sister.

With her birthday around the corner, Danielle's family has decided to declare Friday, Feb. 1 as "Do Good for Dani Day." The family is asking people to do a small act of kindness in honor of Danielle. Some examples include:

'Person of interest' in Jelinek disappearance pleads guilty to drug charges

CHISAGO, Minn. (KMSP) - The family of a missing Chisago woman is still praying for answers in her disappearance as the person of interest in her disappearance pled guilty to an unrelated crime.

On Tuesday, Aaron Schnagl pled guilty to having drugs at the home where Danielle Jelinek was last seen, and her family members were there in court as he did.

Schnagl has been locked up since Dec. 9 -- the day Jelinek was last seen at his house. When police came looking for her, she was nowhere to be found -- but her purse, cell phone and shoes, along with 12 pounds of marijuana, cocaine and pills, were inside.

A previous conviction for drug charges and a fresh probation violation has kept Schnagl inside the Anoka County Jail for the past two months. On Monday, he was ordered to serve out his seven-year sentence. On Tuesday, he took a plea deal in Chisago County allowing him to serve the sentence for the new drug charges at the same time. At a minimum, Schnagl will be in prison for four and a half years.

"I think his goal is to get this all behind him, go do his time and be able to get back out and be free," Schnagl's defense attorney, Rachael Goldberger, told FOX 9 News.

Event to aid reward for missing Oakdale woman

A fundraiser with a raffle, silent auction and bake sale will add to a reward fund for Danielle Jelinek, the 27-year-old Oakdale woman who has been missing since Dec. 9.

The fundraiser is 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Dog House Bar & Grill, 2029 Woodlynn Av. in Maplewood. Admission that includes beer is $20; it’s $10 for admission only. Kids under age 12 are admitted free. Music will be provided and a variety of beverages and food items will be on sale.

The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers of Minnesota have already set up a $1,000 reward for information leading to the person or persons responsible for Jelinek’s disappearance. Anyone with information is asked to call 651-257-4100.

Donations also are accepted at Think Mutual Bank, 400 N. Robert St., St. Paul, MN 55101, in care of the Jelinek Family Benefit Fund.

Jelinek was an avid runner, and her family is planning a road race in her honor in June at Colby Lake Park in Woodbury

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. -- The family of a missing Oakdale woman is holding a fundraiser to increase the $1,000 reward for information about the case.

Danielle Jelinek, 27, was last seen at her former boyfriend's home in Chisago County.

Aaron Schnagl is serving a drug-related prison term and remains a person of interest in the case.

The fundraiser will be held Saturday, March 23rd at the Dog House Bar and Grill in Maplewood from 3-7pm. Admission is $20 for all you can drink, or $10 for admission only. Children 12 and under are free. There will be a silent auction, as well as music and a bake sale.

2 charged with hiding drugs on day Jelinek vanished

Two associates of Aaron Schnagl, whom investigators call a person of interest in the Dec. 9 disappearance of Danielle Jelinek, have been charged in Chisago County District Court for allegedly hiding illegal drugs taken from his house the day she was reported missing.

Joshua W. Jeans, 32, of Stacy, and Curt E. Bennett, 41, of Wyoming, have each been charged with two felony second- and fifth-degree drug counts after investigators say they removed and hid a duffel bag from Schnagl’s Chisago Lake Township home containing 23 grams of cocaine, more than 9 pounds of marijuana and a variety of pills.

Schnagl was sentenced in Anoka County District Court last month for a parole violation after another 12 pounds of marijuana was found in his garage. Schnagl has adamantly asserted he had nothing to do with Jelinek’s disappearance, and has not been charged in connection with it, nor have Jeans or Bennett.

Unlike the Kira Trevino case in St. Paul, in which evidence of foul play was reportedly so substantial that the missing woman's husband was charged with her murder, the investigation into Danielle Jelinek's disappearance in Chisago County has been less clear.

It's been nearly four months since the disappearance of Jelinek, who is 28 and lives in Oakdale, and investigators have turned up little to indicate what may have happened to her.

They are awaiting the spring thaw, in hopes that a renewed search of lakes and rural areas will turn up evidence that snow and ice have been hiding.

Minnesota women murdered, missing turns eyes toward spike in domestic homicides

The cases of three women gone missing and two murdered in the Twin Cities the last few months have one common thread: Their boyfriends or husbands are suspects in each case.

That’s the alarming reality, whether by trend or coincidence, with searches ongoing for Kira Steger Trevino of Plymouth, missing since Feb. 24; Danielle Jelinek of Oakdale, not seen since Dec. 8; and Mandy Matula of Eden Prairie, missing since Wednesday.

Verdicts are still out in the murders of Anna Hurd of Maplewood, found dead Feb. 23, and Margorie Ann Holland of Apple Valley, found dead March 7 along with her unborn child.

KARE 11 reports that according to the Domestic Abuse Project, there were 14 domestic homicides for all of 2012. This year, there have already been 13 domestic homicides in Minnesota. Here’s the clip:

Sitting behind a picture of their daughter Kira, Jay and Marcie Steger say they understand what the families of several other missing women are going through.

"When we leave the Cities to go home and we haven't found her yet, it's heart-wrenching," Marcie said. "It's a long drive home."

Kira Steger Trevino disappeared back in February after she did not show up for work at the Mall of America.

She's one of at least four young women – along with Danielle Jelinek Mandy Matula and Anna Hurd – who have either gone missing or are believed to have been murdered by their boyfriends or husbands over the past few months.

Anglers asked to help find Jelinek

The family of Danielle Jelinek is asking anglers, especially in Chisago County — the area from which Jelinek went missing — to be extra alert when fishing.

The family said there is a chance Jelinek was put in a local body of water, and is asking anglers to keep an eye out for anything unusual, especially near the edges of lakes, rivers and streams.

If anglers find anything suspicious, they are asked to call the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office at 651-257-4100. They are also asked to not move any suspicious items; stay in the location until deputies arrive.

New Group Plans Searches for 2 Missing Women in MN

Volunteers have created a group this week on Facebook that plans to organize community searches for two women who have been missing from the Twin Cities.

The women that the group Minnesota United will search for are 24-year-old Mandy Matula, of Eden Prairie and 28-year-old Danielle Jelinek of Oakdale.

The group initially planned to search for 30-year-old Kira Trevino, of St. Paul; however, police on Thursday said they found her body in the Mississippi River in St. Paul.

Body of missing Cottage Grove native reported found

Nearly six months to the day that Cottage Grove native Danielle Jelinek went missing, her family confirmed that her body has been found.

The body of Cottage Grove native Danielle Jelinek has been found not far from where she went missing six months ago, family confirmed to media Friday afternoon.

Law enforcement and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension gathered near a swampy area a few hundred yards from the home of Jelinek's on-again, off-again boyfriend Aaron Schnagl in rural Chisago Lakes Township. It is unclear when the body was discovered.

Jelinek, 27, was last seen Dec. 8 and reported missing the next morning after allegedly staying overnight at Schnagl’s home near 261st Street and Lofton Avenue. He has denied any involvement in her disappearance.

Family Spokesperson Says Body of Danielle Jelinek Has Been Found

Multiple news outlets are reporting that a family spokesperson said the body of Danielle Jelinek has been discovered.

A family spokesperson is reporting that the body of Danielle Jelinek has been found, according to multiple reports.

The body was found in Chisago County a few hundred yards from the home of Aaron Schnagl, a former boyfriend who has been considered a person of interest in the case, according to the Star Tribune.

Schangl’s is currently being held on a drug offense and probation violation, according to CBS News. Some of her belongings were found at his home during a previous search.

Authorities: Body Found in Chisago County Swamp is Danielle Jelinek

The Chisago County Sheriff confirmed a body found in a pond Friday is that of Danielle Jelinek.

The family of the Oakdale woman missing since Dec. arrived to the scene where authorities recovered her body. Authorities used an airboat during their recovery effort Friday evening.

Sheriff Rick Duncan says a State Patrol helicopter out searching for Jelinek Friday afternoon spotted a body in a pond roughly 200 yards from Aaron Schnagl's home. He is a person of interest in the case.

There's one final piece in the puzzle of Danielle Jelinek's disappearance, and toxicology results may provide the answer.

If a fatal dose of drugs is found in her system, someone could be held accountable.

"If there's a cause of death other than natural causes or drowning or weather, then that'll lead us in a direction of making Aaron (Schnagl) a suspect. But we have to rule out those other factors," Chisago County Sheriff Rick Duncan said Monday, May 13. "From day one he's been the person of interest in this case."

Cause of death in Jelinek case inconclusive

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s office, in Anoka County, has declared the cause of death in the case of Danielle Jelinek as “unfounded.”

Even lacking a specific cause of death, the Chisago County Sheriff said this case is still being reviewed for charges. The main suspect in the investigation, the man who had last seen Jelinek alive, has been jailed on probation violations and drug possession offenses so he is not at-large.

Jelinek was reported missing in early December 2012 from a home south of Chisago City, and her body was found in a pond/wetland area a short distance from the home when an air search was done May 10.

5K Memorial Run Set for Danielle Jelinek

Another memorial is in the works to honor Danielle Jelinek.

The Oakdale woman disappeared in December 2012 and her body was found in Spring 2013.
     
The 5k for Dani J is happening Aug. 17 at Colby Lake in Woodbury. Registration is at 8:00 a.m., and the run walk starts at 9:00 a.m.
     
Proceeds will benefit the Domestic Abuse Project to save other women from violence and abuse.

In May, her body was found near his home.

Ex-boyfriend indicted in death of Danielle Jelinek

CHISAGO COUNTY, Minn. -- A Chisago Grand Jury has indicted the former boyfriend of Danielle Jelinek on third degree murder charges.

Aaron Schnagl became a person of interest after Jelinek was last seen with him the night she went missing in December 2012.

Authorities found her body in a swamp near Schnagl's home on May 11. Officials say there is reason to believe Schnagl provided a controlled substance to Jelinek which was the proximate cause of her death.

Schnagl has been in custody since Jelinek's disappearance and has been serving a prison sentence on drug charges.

If convicted of third degree murder, Schnagl faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

He was reported missing on the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of his friend, Danielle Jelinek, the Pioneer Press said. Friends told the newspaper that Wylie and Jelinek ran in the same social circles.

It was just more than two years ago, in the fading light of a brilliant spring day, that a five-month search for Danielle Jelinek ended with the discovery of her body in a shallow slough near a rural cul-de-sac in Chisago County.

On Monday, at the county courthouse in Center City, jury selection will open what is expected to be a two-week trial for Aaron Schnagl, 30, the last person known to have seen her alive.

Schnagl, whose home was a quarter-mile east of that slough, was indicted on a third-degree murder charge in December 2013, accused of causing the Oakdale woman’s death by providing her with the illegal drugs — in this case, cocaine — that killed her, even if it was unintentional. An autopsy showed cocaine and alcohol in her system, but made no conclusions about the cause and manner of her death, one of the case’s several focal points.

The case is the last to be legally resolved involving three Twin Cities women — the others were Kira Steger and Mandy Matula — who vanished over a six-month span from late 2012 to early 2013. All were found dead weeks later after intensive searches.

Jelinek murder proceedings delayed

The third degree murder trial for Aaron Jude Schnagl scheduled to begin this week in Center City, was delayed and is expected to begin later next week.  County Attorney Janet Reiter said there was an issue learned in discovery Friday, June 12, that was forwarded to the defense and briefs are being filed under  the district court judge’s direction.  The courts had set aside at least 10 days for the trial.  The jury has yet to be seated.

Schnagl was indicted in December 2013.  The indictment speaks to probable cause that Schnagl provided controlled substances (schedule I or II) to the victim, Danielle Jelinek,  which were the proximite cause for her death.  

Schnagl is being held on a sentence for probation violation for another offense.

Jelinek, 27,  disappeared from a home south of Chisago City in December 2012.  Many weeks later her body was recovered.

Danielle Jelinek died more than two years ago. Now, months after its first delay, the trial in her death will wait longer still.

Attorneys are wrangling over fresh legal issues in the trial of Aaron Schnagl, who is charged with third-degree murder in Jelinek’s 2013 death.

Jury selection in Chisago County District Court was halted just as it began last week.

The key issue stems from the revelation of new statements from a witness questioned early in the investigation of Jelinek’s five-month disappearance and death.

The statements to state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigators were discovered by prosecutors and disclosed to Schnagl’s defense attorney, Melvin Welch, just days before the trial was to start on June 15. Court rules require prosecutors to turn over all evidence that may aid in an accused criminal’s defense.

The trial of a man accused of unintentionally killing his former girlfriend is expected to start this week.

Aaron Schnagl, who lived in Chisago County, is charged with third-degree unintentional murder in the 2012 death of Danielle Jelinek. Prosecutors allege he gave her the cocaine that caused her death.

The trial was supposed to start in June but was delayed.

Jury selection is set to begin Tuesday.
