A Cape man who mysteriously disappeared with a friend from Kennebunkport, Maine, last week dreamed of a future designing and building boats.
Prescott Wright, 23, of Barnstable and Zachary Wells, 21, of Burlington, Vt. — both students at the Landing School for boat builders in nearby Arundel — have not been seen since early Thursday morning, Kennebunkport police said.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Police announced Wednesday morning that Marine Patrol units will be in the area of Cape Porpoise to use sonar equipment and possibly dive units to further search for students Zachary Wells and Prescott Wright, who have been missing since Dec. 19 or 20.
The area of focus will be near the area where clothing was found early on Monday. Any type of water search has transitioned into a recovery operation in hopes of finding the missing men or any explanation for their disappearance on the water, Kennebunkport police said Wednesday.

Search resumes for missing students, including Barnstable man

The search for the two men on the water, which was suspended on Christmas day, resumed today with resources from the marine patrol, Kennebunkport police and the state’s dive team, Nichols said.
The searchers are using side-scan sonar to search waters off Goat Island and Trott Island, Nichols said.
~Snipped~
The Maine Marine Patrol has two 21-foot Boston Whalers on the scene and had a plane in the air earlier, he said.
Nichols said the marine patrol found the two life jackets, a jacket, a sweatshirt, two pairs of jeans and footwear on Goat Island but he couldn’t say whether the clothing was found in a pile or spread across a wider area.
“I don’t have any more information on the exact location or condition of the clothing,” he said.
Kennebunkport police Chief Craig Sanford said the clothing was found together and that one item had indications that it is connected to one of the men.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Maine Marine Patrol units took to the waters off Cape Porpoise on Wednesday to search for two men who have been missing since late last week but did not find them.
~Snipped~
Dive teams completed their efforts at 4 p.m., and the search turned up nothing, Sanford said later Wednesday.
The sonar equipment marked a couple of areas requiring closer inspection, the chief said, but nothing was found in either location.
With a major snowstorm bearing down on the state, water search operations will be suspended indefinitely, according to Sanford.

"Sanford said he had police officers searching on land on Christmas for the men and that, while the search on the water had changed over to a recovery operation, he had to keep an open mind about the possibility that the men may be alive onshore somewhere.
“You just never know,” he said.
There is no indication that the two men had taken a vessel out on the water, Sanford said, adding that there is no report of missing or stolen boats.
All boats Wright and Wells had access to are accounted for, he said."

Kennebunkport, Maine — The Maine Marine Patrol was still searching Wednesday afternoon for evidence of a former Barnstable man and his friend, who have been missing for almost a week from Kennebunkport, but the prospects of finding them no longer looked good, Kennebunkport Police Chief Craig Sanford said Wednesday afternoon.
“We have clothing that gives an indication they’re in the water,” Sanford said. He was referring to a piece of clothing that was found Monday on a small island off Cape Porpoise that was marked in such a way as to connect it to one of the men. “The families were notified Monday of the clothing and they made the assumption from there that things aren’t good,” he said.

Search suspended for Barnstable man and other student

KENNEBUNKPORT, MAINE – The search has officially been suspended for two men, including one from Barnstable, who went missing December 20.
“They've exhausted their efforts in the harbor,” Kennebunkport Deputy Police Chief Kurt Moses said of the searchers who have scoured the area for days.
Prescott Wright, 23, of Barnstable and Zachary Wells, 21, of Burlington, Vt., both students at the boat-building Landing School in Arundel, Maine, haven't been seen since disappearing from a gathering of friends at Wright's Cape Porpoise home in the early morning hours of Dec. 20.
Because of the decreasing likelihood that the two men could have survived in the frigid Maine temperatures, the search for Wright and Wells was changed from a rescue mission to one of recovery earlier this week.

Police have called off the search for two students eight days after they disappeared from the college in Maine where they were learning to build boats.
Rescuers say they have searched every inch of the waters off Cape Porpoise in Kennebunkport and have found only a set of clothes that may have belonged to one of the friends.
Zachary Wells, 21, and Prescott Wright, 23, were last seen drinking beer a home in the seaside community on December 19.

'We were able to determine that the likelihood of them being in the harbor has been exhausted,' Kennebunkport Deputy Police Chief Kurt Moses told the Press Herald.
Police have no other leads as to where the men might be and a winter storm is threatening to make continued search danger, Moses said.

Re: Zachary Wells, 21 and Prescott Wright, 23, Missing Since December 20, 2012 - Kennebunkport, ME
This is a very odd case.
Prescott's parents have already declared him dead.
Neither the family of Zachary Wells nor the family of Prescott Wright have talked to the media or issued a public plea for their safe return, or have offered a reward for information.
None of their friends or schoolmates have speak to the media and/or organize a search.
There hasn't been a vigil to pray for them to be found.
No one, absolutely no one who knows these two men has ever publicly spoken out about the case.
The police called off the search a week after they mysteriously disappeared, and Prescott's family ran an obituary ten days after he went missing.
I am totally baffled.

"I couldn't say for sure," lobster fisherman John Daggett said Thursday during a chilly interview on the Cape Porpoise pier about what he thought happened to the two young sailors. Decked out in red flannel, a worn baseball cap and gloves, Daggett stretched the word sure into "shah" in the way some Mainers do.
The fisherman, who was among many who searched for the missing men in the surrounding waters, said nobody could fault the Maine Marine Patrol for lack of trying.
"They don't give up," he said as the agency's plane buzzed overhead with pilot Steve Ingram scanning the water below for any sign of Wright or Wells.
Wright had a sailboat on somebody else's mooring in the harbor until about two or three weeks before he and Wells disappeared, Kennebunkport Harbormaster Lee McCurdy said.
He told Wright he couldn't keep it there for long, McCurdy said, adding that he helped Wright take down the boat's mast before later pulling the boat from the water.
~Snipped~
If they did take kayaks or some other boat on the water, there is no indication where they would have acquired the vessel or vessels, Sanford said.
Two kayaks at the house where they were staying were accounted for, and no other boats have been reported missing, he said.

ZACHARY JAMES WELLS
Obituary
ZACHARY JAMES WELLS KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine - We lost our beautiful son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend Zach in the early hours of Dec. 20, 2012, to the pristine waters off the coast of Maine. Zach was born on March 14, 1991, in Burlington, to Stephanie and James Wells. From the moment of his birth, Zachary made his presence known. He was a force to be reckoned with, a bright light whose laughter and love were extinguished all too early. The gigantic space that Zach filled is now a void left to be furnished by the multitude of memories held by those who knew and loved him.
~Snipped~
A celebration of Zach's life will be held at the Charlotte Congregational Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013. A reception will immediately follow at the Old Lantern in Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a fund which is being established in Zach's name. Contributions may be made to the Zachary James Wells Fund, c/o Jeffrey Small, CPA, 72 Pine St., Burlington, VT 05401.

More baffled each day!! I don't understand... maybe I am just getting senile in my old age... but why the rush?? to declare them deceased and have funerals??? I don't comprehend??
even more confused now... did a little digging... Prescott Wright had a FB page... accepted 3 new friends on Dec 24... okay so I can see that maybe he sent requests and on the 24th 3 people accepted, but... here is the kicker.. trolled all of the people on his friends list and not one of them mention he is missing... ????

Re: Zachary Wells, 21 and Prescott Wright, 23, Missing Since December 20, 2012 - Kennebunkport, ME

Remains confirmed as Maine boatbuilding students
Zachary Wells and Prescott Wright were last seen at a late-night party in Kennebunkport on Dec. 20.

KENNEBUNKPORT — Remains found last month on Vaughn’s Island have been identified as the two boatbuilding school students who disappeared in December and were presumed drowned after a search turned up evidence pointing to that outcome.
Mark Belserene, office administrator for the Maine medical examiner, said Tuesday that DNA tests conducted at the Maine State Police crime lab confirmed the remains were Zachary Wells, 21, of Burlington, Vt., and 23-year-old Prescott Wright of Barnstable, Mass

Belserene said the office hasn’t yet determined a cause of death. He said toxicology tests would be conducted and officials were hopeful of getting results because the remains were relatively well-preserved due to being in cold water.
Toxicology tests will take six to eight more weeks to complete, he said.

Re: Zachary Wells, 21 and Prescott Wright, 23, Missing Since December 20, 2012 - Kennebunkport, ME
"A resident who was walking a dog Sunday afternoon found the remains on the southern side of Vaughn Island, which is at the mouth of Turbot’s Creek, said Kennebunkport Police Chief Craig Sanford".
---
"Wells and Wright were last seen drinking with friends at a gathering at Wells’s house near the Cape Porpoise pier on Dec. 19.
On Christmas Eve, searchers found items that they believe belonged to the men on a ledge near Goat Island, which is off Trott Island near Cape Porpoise."
---
"Sanford said it is remarkable that the remains might have stayed near the shore, rather than washing out to sea".
---
"They were found above the high-tide mark, suggesting they were deposited there during the storm, which generated 25- to 30-foot seas and caused flooding during high tide, Sanford said."

high tide - Same as high water. (NOS CO-OPS 1 2000)
high water (HW) - The maximum height reached by a rising tide. The high water is due to the periodic tidal forces and the effects of meteorological, hydrologic, and/or oceanographic conditions. For tidal datum computational purposes, the maximum height is not considered a high water unless it contains a tidal high water. (NOS CO-OPS 1 2000)
high water mark - A line or mark left upon tide flats, beach, or along shore objects indicating the elevation of the intrusion of high water. The mark may be a line of oil or scum on along shore objects, or a more or less continuous deposit of fine shell or debris on the fore shore or berm. This mark is physical evidence of the general height reached by wave run up at recent high waters. It should not be confused with the mean high water line or mean higher high water line. AD
Your last entry was from Feb 2013.
"...Wells and Wright were last seen drinking with friends at a gathering at Wells’s house near the Cape Porpoise pier on Dec. 19.
(At his home and not a bar...)
On Christmas Eve, searchers found items that they believe belonged to the men on a ledge near Goat Island, which is off Trott Island near Cape Porpoise.
(Missing since Dec 19 and items located "staged" on a ledge Dec 24. IF they were looking for them, why did it take so many days to find the "perishable" items? Since they were all located in one area and NOT strewn onto other beachy areas, I must presume they were staged at some point. Winds and tides would have washed some of the items about. Some items would have landed elsewhere or been swept to sea. Also, the items each had different weights and compositions for water absorptions.)
The items included two life jackets, two pairs of jeans, a jacket, a sweatshirt and footwear. They were found about three-quarters of a mile from the back side of Vaughn Island...."

COLD CASE: Smiley murder?
Josh Swalls, Nov 2012, Indianapolis
Q18:
"...That’s also strange because the act of drowning is extremely traumatic and well over ten percent of such victims will bruise and even rip muscles in their shoulders, neck, and chest while struggling to save themselves—did the coroner find any evidence of such bruising or ruptures in your son’s autopsy?..."

The last media reports that I've found about this case are dated March, 5, 2013, there haven't been any other reports stating the cause and manner of death of Zachary and Prescott after their remains were identified. I don't know if it has been already determined.
I think the police and the M.E. left us on a cliffhanger ...

Ummm, yeah.
And, I don't believe there will be an in depth investigation regarding their deaths because their own families declared them deceased before their bodies were found. Which, in my opinion, is extremely odd.
What evidence the police had? What did they tell to Zachary and Prescott's families that made them react in the way that they did?
The police found some clothes in Goat Island, even if one of the items that were found could have been traced back to one of the two missing men, it didn't prove that they were dead. Their early theory that they might had gone Kayaking in the wee hours of the morning was dismissed by the fact that there weren't any boats missing in the area, they were all accounted for.
The police called the search off way too soon. Perhaps it was because they didn't see any efforts to find them from their own families, and friends. Maybe they thought that they had staged their "demise" to go away and start a new life somewhere else. The people who knew them at school didn't believe that they will go away without telling anyone.
After both families published obituaries, had some memorials in Zachary and Prescott's honor, and said their final good byes, how can they now demand answers from the police about their deaths, how can they asked for an investigation to find out what really happened to them when they never questioned the facts surrounding their mysterious disappearance? Normally, it is the family who put the pressure on the police to probe the disappearance or the death of a loved one.
I think what their families did was a glaring error.

Re: Zachary Wells, 21 and Prescott Wright, 23, Missing Since December 20, 2012 - Kennebunkport, ME
Robert DeColfmacker, president of the Landing School, told the Portland Press Herald that Wells' roommates said the two men had left their cellphones and wallets at the home.
'These are two students without a history of disappearing or unexplained absences,' he said.
