Pretoria – Pathologist Gert Saayman, testifying in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial on Monday, told the court the ammunition used in the shooting was black talon, designed to cause maximum damage in its victim.

According to reporters inside the Pretoria High Court, Saayman testified that Pistorius used black talon ammunition when he shot and killed his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. This ammunition has been taken off the market in some countries.

Saayman said the bullets shattered into multiple parts in some of the injuries Steenkamp sustained. He also said Steenkamp ate about two hours before she was killed.

Pistorius meanwhile, has not been able to stop vomiting and retching since Saayman began to give his evidence just after 12pm.

Earlier on Monday Judge Thokozile Masipa ordered the live broadcast be cut during Saayman’s evidence. She also banned reporters from tweeting and blogging live the pathologist’s testimony.

Court is adjourned until Tuesday.

The bullets fired from Oscar Pistorius's gun which killed Reeva Steenkamp are known as expanding bullets, the High Court in Pretoria heard.

They were designed to cause maximum tissue damage, pathologist Professor Gert Saayman said.

Such a bullet caused major damage, opening up when striking human tissue.

Doctors knew to be careful when dealing with such wounds because they could cut themselves on the projectile.

Pistorius sat in the dock with his head down and hands covering his face.

He closed his ears and gagged as Saayman gave graphical evidence.

Steenkamp had a blue discoloration on her inner right buttocks that could have been caused from the bullet wound to her right hip.

"But no projectile could be found," said Saayman.

There was also a reddish bruise on the right nipple.

The court heard that Steenkamp had a few bruises on her body that were not as a result of the shooting.

As Saayman spoke, Pistorius threw up into a bucket that had been given him.

He then sat with head bowed, covering his ears with his hands and a white handkerchief — by now a familiar pose — on the sixth day of his trial in a South African courtroom.

Her ruling was made after a request by the pathologist who said his role as a doctor required him to bear in mind the ethics of his actions.

He said that he was concerned that the intense public interest in the case would result in excessively detailed reports.

Oscar changes his story

At first he didn’t say a word about an early morning conversation with Reeva Steenkamp. Now he claims they spoke shortly before he had shot her.

In Oscar Pistorius’ affidavit submitted last year at his bail application, he describes how he and Steenkamp went to sleep that evening, how he woke up in the early hours of the morning and then got up to bring the fan in before he heard a noise in the bathroom.

But in his explanation of plea submitted to the court when his trial began on Monday, there is new information that was not in his initial affidavit. In this statement, he says he spoke to Steenkamp shortly before he got up to bring the two fans in.

“In the early hours, I brought two fans in from the balcony.

“Shortly before that, I spoke to Reeva who was next to me in bed,” the explanation of plea reads.

There’s a big difference, says Barry Hurter, a criminal law expert and attorney in Johannesburg.

The state can now cross-examine Pistorius about this difference when he testifies.

There are also two other differences. In the affidavit, Pistorius speaks of “the fan”, but in the explanation of plea of “two fans”.

The ammunition that killed Reeva Steenkamp was designed to fold out “like the petals of a flower” and inflict maximum damage to a victim.

This was according to today’s testimony by Dr Gert Saayman, a forensic pathologist, who conducted the autopsy on Steenkamp.

Saayman testified that the bullet shards he discovered in Steenkamp’s body was “ranger” ammunition, formerly known as “Black Talon” ammunition.

Saayman said he was not a ballistics expert but that he was familiar with this type of ammunition as he had seen such injuries before.

He testified that the bullet was designed to “mushroom” or open up like the petals of a flower, to transmit the maximum amount of kinetic energy (motion energy) to the victim.

Furthermore, the “petals” also have very sharp edges, designed to inflict even more damage.

"Saayman stood for much of his testimony, referring to photographs that were not shown to the gallery as he described bullet wounds on Steenkamp's body, one to the right side of the head, one to the right arm and one to the right hip area. He also described exit wounds caused by the bullets and other abrasions and discoloration of the skin, consistent with the impact of a bullet fired through a wooden object such as a door.

Saayman said that each of the three main gunshot wounds Steenkamp suffered could have been fatal in isolation. Steenkamp's right arm was also broken and she had multiple skull fractures, both because of the effect of bullets, Saayman said.

There was another wound on one of Steenkamp's hands, Saayman said. Steenkamp, a model and personality on a television reality show, was wearing a pair of sports shorts with a Nike logo, a former sponsor of Pistorius, and a black undershirt when she was shot, he said.

Saayman also gave his expert opinion on how long before she died Steenkamp last ate by the food contents in her stomach. He estimated that it wouldn't have been more than two hours before she died. That appeared to contradict Pistorius' version that suggests the couple had eaten and were in bed by 10 p.m. Steenkamp was shot after 3 a.m."

OP appears to be using drama to appeal to the court.  
Good luck with that!
Any woman out there knows how to turn on the tears and use vomiting to make a point...  

Could OP have gotten physical with the victim prior to her running to the bathroom? Is that a possibility to explain some of the injuries?
Then, after running to the bathroom, the victim may have contemplated going out the bathroom window (reason for open window...oddly, OP does not state it was open due to the HEAT...) ? OP became more enraged when he could not control victim so he started shooting thru the door?

The pathologist also reported an injury on the webbing of her left hand, between the second and third fingers, as if a gunshot had passed through, traveling from the back of her hand in the direction of her palm. I don't know how he was able to carry a fan (or two fans) from the balcony into the bedroom if he was not wearing his prosthetic legs. Samantha Taylor, his ex-girlfriend, said on the stand that he can walk without them, "but he has to lean against something".

With regard to "the dry heaving drama", I think it is obvious that it was a plot to get the attention away from the evidence that was presented to the court by the Pathologist who performed the autopsy of Reeva Steenkamp.

It sure sounds to me as if he knew she was in the toilet stall area;
he did have his legs on;
he shot downward into a the head of a seated Reeva.

I found it odd OP went out to bring back TWO fans from the deck.
That tells me it was either very hot and they were wanting to blow the air out of the home rather than circulate it into the home from the cooler morning air. Have they no air conditioning?

The open bathroom window:
Why would a man leave a ladder up against the outside of his home IF he was afraid of intruders? And why would he leave a window open next to the ladder?

Much of the alibi OP gave to the LEOs just appears to be a pack of lies...It makes no sense at all. And knowing he has just shot Reeva, WHY would he toss her over his shoulder and try to carry her down a flight of stairs??? Could it be.... he just wanted to "muddy" the crime scene?

I am rather cynical of his story.
He disgusts me as he appears to act like a spoiled and petulant child... and that is not becoming on an adult. He has violated the laws of his country regarding gun ownership, ammunition type, discharging of his weapon (as playful as it might be) and asking others to carry responsibility for him. His attitude re his responsibility is no different, IMO, than George Zimmerman....
The two will justify until they are blue in the face....

I have not been watching this trial but thought I'd watch it for several minutes now. Can't find a link to a "Live Stream." I guess I'll have to go to page 1.

10.15 Roux is grilling Fresco on his witness statement. Roux sounds surprised at Fresco's admission that he has not re-read his statement before appearing in court today.

He wants to know why Fresco did not say he was asked to lie on Pistorius' behalf.

"I can't tell you why I did not say that.  

But what I can tell you is that my version is the truth."  

10.11 Roux is asking Fresco about the incident in the restaurant.

Fresco said the wife of the restaurant owner came to the table.

Roux says the court has heard that the husband came first.

Fresco insists:

PRETORIA, South Africa -- A friend of Oscar Pistorius testified in the Olympian's murder trial Tuesday that the athlete twice fired guns in incidents the double-amputee denies.

Both events took place before Pistorius shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Feb. 14, 2013.

When the car Fresco was driving was stopped for speeding in late 2012, Pistorius argued with a police officer who handled his gun, which Pistorius had left on the passenger's seat.

"'You can't just touch another man's gun,'" Fresco recalled Pistorius telling the traffic officer. "Now your fingerprints are all over my gun. So if something happens, you're going to be liable for anything that happens."

Fresco said the altercation with the police ended and they drove away with Samantha Taylor, the runner's girlfriend at the time, who has given a similar account of the episode. Later that day, Pistorius shot out the car's sunroof, Fresco said.

"Without prior warning, he shot out the sunroof," Fresco, who was driving, said of Pistorius, who he said was in the passenger seat.

Fresco said he "instinctively" moved over to the right side of the vehicle and away from where the gun was shot, then asked Pistorius if he was "mad."

"He just laughed," Fresco testified. "But it felt as if my ear was already bleeding."

PRETORIA, South Africa – It would have been "abnormal" for Reeva Steenkamp not to scream while she was being shot, says the pathologist who conducted her autopsy, provided she had not yet received the head wound that knocked her out.

Pathologist Gert Saayman said Steenkamp would have been able to "rationally conduct" herself despite other wounds until her boyfriend, Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, shot her in the head on Valentine's morning last year.

A major point of contention in the trial will be the order in which the bullets Pistorius fired hit Steenkamp, as prosecution witnesses have insisted they discerned female screaming during and prior to the "bangs" they heard.

The athlete, in his account of events, is adamant that Steenkamp made no verbal sound while she was behind the locked toilet door, so he mistook her for an intruder.

PRETORIA (AFP) - Oscar Pistorius's defence lawyers on Tuesday probed a pathologist's explosive testimony that Reeva Steenkamp ate hours before she was killed, a claim that again put the Paralympian's version of events in doubt.

Forensic pathologist Gert Saayman told the murder trial - now in its second week - that Pistorius's girlfriend ate at about 1:00 am, roughly two hours before her Valentine's Day death last year.

That contradicts the South African star sprinter's claim that the pair were in bed asleep in his upmarket Johannesburg home for five hours before Ms Steenkamp was killed.

Earlier, Pistorius' defense team questioned pathologist Gert Saayman's finding that Steenkamp had eaten less than two hours before she died, which contradicts the athlete's account that they had been in bed for several hours before the shooting.

The testimony is key because Pistorius said he and Steenkamp ate several hours earlier, which means her stomach likely would have been empty at the time of the shooting.

Saayman, however, held tight to his estimate.

Saayman also told the court on Monday that Steenkamp had been shot three times, in the head, hip and arm. If she had been shot in the hip or arm first, she would have been able to scream, he said.

"I think it would be somewhat abnormal if one did not scream" when receiving a wound like Steenkamp's arm wound, Saayman told the prosecution.

Neighbors said they heard a woman screaming before the shots were fired, but defense lawyers argue that Pistorius was the only one who screamed.

PRETORIA, South Africa (CNN) -- The defense failed to poke many holes in the testimony of a pathologist who cast doubt on the time line of events Oscar Pistorius said led up to the death of his girlfriend.

Gert Saayman held tight Tuesday to his estimate that Reeva Steenkamp ate two hours before her death.

Nice info coming out of court today.

Logically, one WOULD scream in pain IF a bullet had entered their body.The bullet entering her arm with so much destruction as to break the bone would suffice, IMO.

IF she had been shot first in the head there would be no screams.
OP says they were his (which I doubt but let us leave that for a minute.) IF she had FIRST been shot in the head, would she have been capable of raising her arm/hand in an attempt to protect herself? I think not. The nerve centers would have been severed so the intentional action could not have happened. She could not have raised an arm that distance and held it there long enough to have a second bullet penetrate thru the arm.

The head wound had to have been last.
The gun was fired striking her.
She screamed in pain and perhaps anger.
She was then shot thru the head.

Let's see.
She went to get a bite to eat or snack on about 2 hours before she died.That puts it @ 1:30.
He brings in two fans.
He goes to bed. Says she was next to him in bed.
(Other gfs have stated he never slept on the side he supposedly slept on with Reeva. They also said his gun was never kept under the bed but was on the nightstand near him.)
He hears a noise, grabs the gun from under the bed,  and does NOT check to see if his partner is the one making the noise?

I call BS...

As crude as it may seem, since she was murdered on Valentine's Day, I am guessing OP may have had "romantic plans" and was rebuffed. The rebuffing angered him.  He exacted his anger on her.

PISTORIUS FORENSICS UNDER FIRE - Sapa

A large splinter of wood was missed when forensic analysts were re-assembling the door Oscar Pistorius fired shots through, killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, the High Court in Pretoria heard on Wednesday.

Under cross-examination by Barry Roux, SC, for Pistorius at his murder trial, police forensic analyst Colonel Johannes Vermeulen said at first that he did not know what happened to the missing wood splinters.

He was then shown a picture of the door, with a piece of wood, described in court as a splinter, lying on a pile of plastic next to the door in the picture.
