Police tell media outlets the body of 22-year-old Kosta Karageorge was found near the campus after a search since he went missing Wednesday. The senior defensive tackle from Columbus had last been seen at his apartment in Columbus, when his roommates said he left to go on a walk.

Body identified as Kosta Karageorge
Nov 30, 2014, 6:04 PM ET
ESPN.com news services
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The body of missing Ohio State defensive lineman Kosta Karageorge was found by Columbus police on Sunday after a search that started after he went missing on Wednesday.
Karageorge, 22, was found dead in a dumpster of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was identified by tattoos at the scene, and a police spokesman said the investigation would continue with both the dumpster and the body of Karageorge being transported to the county morgue.
"At this time, there's a lot of questions that we're still trying to work out," Sgt. Rich Weiner told reporters at the scene. "But he was found inside of the dumpster, the handgun was found inside of the dumpster with him.
"At this time we are able to confirm through tattoos here at the scene that it is the body of Kosta Karageorge."
A police report says Karageorge's mother told authorities he has had concussions and spells of confusion. She said he texted a message Wednesday citing the concussions and saying he was sorry if he was "an embarrassment."
Karageorge was scheduled to be recognized on senior day during Saturday's home game against rival Michigan, but he had gone missing on Wednesday leading up to the 42-28 win by the No. 6 Buckeyes.

FBI joins search for missing Pa. college student
PHILADELPHIA -- The FBI has now joined the search for a college senior who was last seen leaving a crowded Philadelphia bar after a night out with friends.
On Sunday afternoon, police combed the frigid waters of the Manayunk Canal but came up empty in their search for 21-year-old West Chester University student Shane Montgomery.
Montgomery's parents watched from the canal bank.
Police say Montgomery was home from school and had met up with friends Wednesday night. Authorities say he became separated from them and was escorted out by a bouncer at 2 a.m. Thursday after stumbling. He hasn't been seen since.
Montgomery was kicked out of Kildaire's Irish Pub in Manayunk after bumping into a bar stool, reports CBS Philly.

More details emerge about the night Shane Montgomery went missing (Video)

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The reward increased to $25,000 Monday for information about missing college student Shane Montgomery, and we're learning more about the circumstances of his departure from a popular Manayunk bar.
The 21-year-old college student has been missing since Thanksgiving - last seen leaving Kildare's Irish Pub around 2 a.m. Thursday.
Jim Townsend, the Director of Operations of Kildare's, explained Monday that there was no altercation or friction surrounding Shane's departure from the bar and emphasized that he was not acting drunk.
He says Montgomery did accidentally bump into the DJ's equipment, but was polite and respectful and moved on.
According to Townsend, Montgomery then met up with a relative, who is a Kildare's employee, who informed him it was closing time. He says it was 1:50 a.m. when the relative walked Shane to the front door where they were met with security who saw Shane out.
Townsend says, "Other than the front door staff, Shane did not have any interaction with any other management or security staff or cause a disruption as he left the restaurant. He was respectful and left the premises on his own."

SEARCY -- Police have called off the active search for a missing 2-year-old and are now focusing on a criminal investigation into the child's disappearance.
The search for Malik Drummond began Nov. 23 when his father and stepmother reported he apparently walked away from their home. Volunteers joined with local police, state police and the FBI in an unsuccessful search for the boy.
Police Chief Jeremy Clark said in a news release Monday that investigators will focus "on the only possible remaining scenarios."
Cpl. Steve Hernandez said those scenarios are that the boy was abducted or that he may be dead.
Hernandez said police do not have a specific suspect in the case — but have eliminated no one as a suspect, including members of the boy's family.

I thot of that case, too. There are too many missing college "boys" who disappear from bars. IIRC, this happens too often near water... I had read a sketchy connection between interstates or certain patterns...No cause of death is ever released.
Do you recall the missing coaches son? They found the young man's body in shallow water. Did they ever arrest anyone?

@Freckles:
I know that we have read and followed several cases where college age students have gone missing after being kicked out of a bar by a bouncer, or have separated from their friends after a night out drinking and their bodies have later been found in a body of water; several have been found in the Wisconsin River, including the body of the son of the Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. I haven't followed the case closely, I don't know of details about an arrest being made related to his death.

SYDNEY, Australia (Seven Network/CNN) - Police have charged a mother whose newborn baby was found alive at the bottom of a storm drain on Sunday.
A group of passersby made the discovery at the bottom of a concrete drain, two and a half meters deep and in distress.
"It was heartbreaking. We felt sick. We still feel sick. We just wanted that baby to know and see it's face it was OK," Hayley Otte said.
Hayley Otte and her father David Otte were cycling through Quakers Hill Sunday morning when they heard the little boy's cries.
It's just lucky they found him when they did. Temperatures eclipsed 40 degrees just hours later, meaning the baby may not have survived.

MISSING IN AMERICA: Rhonda Daugherty
Rhonda Daugherty, 49, vanished on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014, from her home in LaFollette, Tennessee.
Her husband, Charles Daugherty, told police that he arrived home that evening to find the back door wide open. All of her belongings, including her cell phone, purse, keys and vehicle, were located at the home. However, Rhonda was nowhere to be found.
"Not knowing what's happened is the biggest thing, just not knowing what's happened to her. Is she out here cold and alone? I don't know. I want to find her," Charles told NBC affiliate WBIR.
Family and friends said it's very unlike Rhonda to simply vanish, especially as she is expected to become a first-time grandmother this week.
Police have not commented on whether or not the mother's disappearance is suspicious, but they have launched an investigation. The sheriff's office is also offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to her whereabouts.
"We're just devastated," Rhonda's cousin, Scott Kitts, told Dateline. "Especially with the holidays coming up, we are all out of minds with worry. Rhonda is a big part of the community here."
Rhonda is described as 5'3", 150 lbs., with auburn hair and hazel eyes. If you have any information that could help in the case, please call the Campbell County Sheriff's Office at (423) 562-7446. You can also visit the Facebook page, Search for Rhonda Kitts Daugherty, for more information.

In a letter published in the school's newspaper, Emily Clark says she has no concrete evidence to prove that her friend -- given the pseudonym "Jackie" in a Rolling Stone article -- was sexually assaulted but described a noticeable change in her roommate.
"Jackie never mentioned anything about her assault to us until much later," Clark writes. "But I, as well as others, noticed Jackie becoming more and more withdrawn and depressed."
Clark's letter comes after Rolling Stone changed its apology over the story about the alleged gang rape, telling readers the mistakes were the magazine's fault, not the alleged victim's.
The magazine said that it shouldn't have agreed to Jackie's request not to contact the alleged assailants to get their side of the story, out of sensitivity to her. "These mistakes are on Rolling Stone, not on Jackie," wrote the magazine's managing editor, Will Dana. "We apologize to anyone who was affected by the story and we will continue to investigate the events of that evening."

Ever heard of “gender disappointment”? Jayne and Jon Cornwill certainly have. It’s what drove the Australian couple to mortgage their house, fly to California, and cough up nearly $50,000 to take advantage of technology called pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) for a single purpose: to choose the sex of their baby at the outset of pregnancy, a practice that’s illegal in their home country.

Plea talks to begin in case of 6 newborns dead
Associated Press By LINDSAY WHITEHURST 6 hours ago
PROVO, Utah (AP) — A plea agreement could be in the works for a Utah woman accused of killing six of her seven newborn babies and storing all the bodies in her garage, the prosecutor said Monday.
Megan Huntsman, 39, of Pleasant Grove, waived her right to have a judge review the evidence against her to decide if she should stand trial. Appearing pale and speaking in a soft voice Monday, she told Judge Darold McDade that she understood what it meant to waive her right to a preliminary hearing.
...Police said Huntsman strangled or suffocated six infants over a 10-year period from 1996 to 2006, and a seventh baby found in her garage was stillborn. Investigators say she was addicted to methamphetamine and didn't want to care for the babies.

Possible Break in Disappearance of Missing College Student Shane Montgomery
By Caitlin Keating @caitkeating 12/10/2014 AT 03:45 PM EST
Police may have made their first break Wednesday in the disappearance of the 21-year-old Pennsylvania college student who went missing on Thanksgiving Eve.
Shane Montgomery was last seen out with his cousin around 1:45 a.m. at Kildare's Irish Pub in Philadelphia on Nov. 26.
"Until today, we could not find him on any of the video surveillance," Richard Ross, first deputy police commissioner, tells PEOPLE. "But we finally found a video that seems to depict him in the area. We are not certain but this is the most positive break we have had so far."
He hopes they will be able to confirm if it's actually Montgomery by the end of day.

Suspects in Slaying of Arkansas Realtor Beverly Carter Plead Not Guilty
By Steve Helling @stevehelling 12/10/2014 AT 07:45 AM EST
When realtor Beverly Carter vanished on Sept. 25 while showing a house to a prospective buyer, the community of Scott, Arkansas, hoped for her safe return.
Police quickly focused on 33-year-old Arron Lewis as their suspect, and they say he led them to her body five days later. He was arrested. A month later, his estranged wife, Crystal Lowery, was also arrested and charged with the murder.
Lewis initially told reporters that he had targeted Carter because "she was just a woman who worked alone – a rich broker." But in court on Thursday, he and Lowery both pleaded not guilty to the killing. According to defense attorney James Hensley, Jr., the defense team wanted Lewis to undergo a mental evaluation, but he rejected the request.

Dad: Teen lit on fire in rural Miss. may have ID'd her killer
9:21 a.m. EST December 10, 2014
COURTLAND, Miss. — A teen who died a gruesome death at the hands of an unidentified assailant may have told investigators who her killer was before she died, family members said.
On Saturday night in rural Panola County, deputies responded to a call about a burning car and found Jessica Chambers of Courtland on fire walking down the road, gravely injured. She was taken to a Memphis hospital, where she died the next day.
...Preliminary autopsy results revealed that the 19-year-old died from severe burns that covered 98% of her body, Panola County Coroner Gracie Gulledge said.
"From what we were told, the only part of her body that wasn't burned was the bottom of her feet," said Amanda Prince, Chambers' sister.
Police told family members that someone was inside Chambers' car before the attack. The assailant poured accelerant down her throat and nose and set her on fire.

Rikers Island guard convicted in NYC inmate's 2012 death
NEW YORK -- A New York City jail guard has been convicted of a civil rights charge after a jury concluded he ignored the pleas of a dying Rikers Island inmate who had swallowed a toxic soap ball.
Terrence Pendergrass shook his head repeatedly as the verdict was announced Wednesday in Manhattan federal court.
Pendergrass was charged in the death of 25-year-old Jason Echevarria, who had bipolar disorder and was being held on a burglary charge, CBS New York reported.
On Aug. 18, 2012, Echevarria, who was in a mental health unit, swallowed a powerful disinfectant commonly referred to as a "soap ball" which he was given by a new correction officer after a sewage backup in his cell, officials said.
The man was left unattended for hours and was discovered dead the next day. An autopsy revealed he "died as a result of injuries caused by the ingestion of a caustic substance, consistent with the ingestion of a soap ball."

Keys belonging to a missing college student in Pennsylvania were discovered in the Schuylkill River, his uncle said.
The family of Shane Montgomery, 21, confirmed to ABC station WPVI-TV Sunday that divers found the keys near the river bank; the first physical clue to emerge in Montgomery’s Nov. 27 disappearance.
“They discovered a set of keys in the water,” Montgomery’s uncle Kevin Verbrugghe told WPVI-TV. “They brought them to the surface and brought them to us. I identified them as Shane’s, positively identified as his.”

Re: Developing Stories
Was doing some research on the ongoing apparent suicides from Bridgend, Wales, and decided to share this blurb with you:
".....In 2007, a unicef study of child well-being in 21 developed countries ranked Britain dead last. A key measure of a society’s health, the study maintains, is how it takes care of its children. Time magazine’s international edition ran a cover story about how the youth of Britain are “unhappy, unloved and out of control,” drinking more, doing more drugs, becoming sexually active in their early teens (many girls at 15 and younger), and exhibiting more antisocial behavior than ever before, due at least partly to parental neglect. In some cases, disaffection leads to violence: gang-related stabbings are alarmingly on the rise. “The British have a long propensity to recoil in horror from their children,” the story reports, and now they’re really scared of their young. Another study, by some Oxford social scientists, finds that the morale of school-age children throughout the U.K. is appallingly low. With parents failing to socialize their kids into adulthood, British youth, and other kids in the modern world, particularly in its marginalized sectors, are forming their own dysfunctional social groups. Children are less integrated, so they spend more time with their peers. “Add to the mix,” the Time story continues, “a class structure that impedes social mobility and an education system that rewards the advantaged, and some children are bound to be left in the cold.”
One social worker here tells me, “It’s surprising more of them aren’t doing it. These suicides are a symptom of a deeper societal malaise.” But why are they happening here, in this particular part of Wales?...."

Death of woman near NASCAR track ruled homicide
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The death of a woman whose body was found near the Talladega SuperSpeedway has been ruled a homicide, reports CBS affiliate WIAT.
Theresa Benn, 42, was reported missing on October 19. Investigators told the station that she was last seen around 2 a.m. on the 19th by her husband, who dropped her off on Speedway Industrial Drive in Lincoln reportedly because she wanted to go to a NASCAR race and he did not.
WIAT reports the intersection where Benn's husband dropped her off is about a two-and-a-half-mile walk from the speedway, which is about 45 miles east of Birmingham.
Investigators reportedly don't know whether she ever made it there or not.
On November 22nd, a search crew found Benn's body in the Jackson Shoals area of Choccolocco Creek, which runs past the speedway. Police have not said how she died.
Police are asking anyone who has any information to help them close this case to call the Lincoln Police department at 256-761-1556.

AirAsia plane missing with 162 aboard (Video)
Donna Leinwand Leger, USA TODAY 8:41 a.m. EST December 28, 2014
A jet flying from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore with 162 people aboard lost contact with air traffic control over the Java Sea about an hour before it was to land and is missing, AirAsia Indonesia officials said Sunday.
Flight QZ8501 took off at about 5:35 a.m. Sunday local time from Juanda International Airport and lost contact with air traffic control at about 7:24 a.m., the airline said on its Facebook page. The time in Surabaya is 12 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time; Singapore is 13 hours ahead of ET.
"We don't dare to presume what has happened except that it has lost contact," Djoko Murjatmodjo, Indonesia's acting director general of transportation, told reporters. He said the last contact between pilot and the air traffic control was at 6:13 a.m. local time when the pilot asked to avoid a cloud bank by turning left and going higher to 34,000 feet.
Flight QZ8501 gave no distress signal, he said.

PLANES and ships involved in the search for missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 will focus on patches of oil spotted in Java Sea for possible clues when the search resumes today.
Air Force spokesman Rear Marshal Hadi Tjahnanto told a media outlet that an Indonesian chopper spotted two oily spots east of Belitung island — not far from the coordinates of the plane’s final contact.
He said samples would be collected in a bid to ascertain whether or not the oil is connected to the missing plane.
“We cannot be sure whether it is part of the missing AirAsia plane,” he told the UK Telegraph.
“We are now moving in that direction, which is in cloudy conditions.”

Search for missing AirAsia jetliner yields no solid evidence of its location or fate
By William Wan December 29 at 5:57 PM
BEIJING — As the search for a missing AirAsia passenger plane stretched into its third day, authorities widened their hunt and asked for outside help, even as hopes dimmed among families of the 162 people aboard the jet.
Indonesian authorities said Monday they believe the plane already lies at the bottom of the sea, complicating the search and prompting them to ask the United States, Britain and France for more advanced equipment.
The Pentagon said details of that assistance are still being worked out, but would likely include “air, surface and sub-surface detection capabilities.”

Four found dead in North Texas home
CROWLEY, Texas - Officers responding to a report of a suicide attempt found four people dead inside a North Texas home Sunday afternoon, police said.
Crowley Police Chief Luis Soler said in a news conference Sunday night that a 9-year-old who was inside the home called a relative and told her that a man there was injured after attempting to kill himself. The woman then called 911, Soler said.
When police arrived at the home about four minutes after her call, around 4:15 p.m., they found two women, a man and a female child dead, according to Soler.
Officers also found the 9-year-old caller at the scene, apparently uninjured, Soler said. That child was in protective custody and was being interviewed

Searchers pulled bodies from the Java Sea on Tuesday and found what officials said was the wreckage of Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 as the three-day mystery over the plane’s whereabouts reached a heartbreaking resolution for the families of the 162 people aboard.
Relatives who had huddled and prayed since Sunday at the international airport in Surayaba, Indonesia, broke down and wept as television images showed a rescuer being lowered into the Java Sea to retrieve a swollen body floating at the water’s surface.
At least three bodies were recovered and would be brought to Surabaya, officials said. So were an oxygen cylinder, a suitcase and a metal piece of fuselage.

Detroit police want anyone with information about the shooting that left a Grosse Pointe Farms teen dead to know: your tip could be worth $100,000.
That's the amount of money being offered by a group of anonymous donors through the Detroit Crime Commission for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
Paige Stalker, 16, was fatally shot and three other teens were wounded in the Dec. 22 shooting, which police said is being investigated as a "robbery gone bad." A fifth teen escaped the attack uninjured.
Andrew Arena, executive director of the nonprofit crime commission, said the donors contacted the commission, which he said has also helped police by doing some analytical work on the case.
"These are individuals who are in the area, they know the family, they know each other and they want this crime solved," Arena said of the donors.
Assistant Detroit Police Chief Steve Dolunt said tipsters can leave the tip and their name and phone number at 313-596-2663.
"We will do everything we can to have the tipster remain anonymous," Dolunt said. "However, because of the amount of money, they'll have to be vetted through our homicide section and we will contact you. Again, you'll have to leave a contact name and number and we will contact you."
