STEPHENVILLE — Prosecutors have rested their case in the capital murder trial of a Lancaster man accused of killing former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and his friend in 2013.

Before resting, prosecutors played a recorded phone call between 27-year-old Eddie Ray Routh and a reporter from The New Yorker magazine.

During the interview, Routh describes the events surrounding the slayings of Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield, at an Erath County gun range in February 2013.

“I had to take care of business. I took care of business, and then I got in the truck and left,” Routh said in the recorded phone call.

Routh complained about the smell of cologne in the truck with Kyle and Littlefield while the men drove to Rough Creek Lodge on Feb. 2, 2013. Routh also said that he was annoyed at the gun range because Littlefield wasn’t shooting.

“Are you gonna shoot? Are you gonna shoot? It’s a shooting sport. You shoot,” Routh said in the phone call. “That’s what got me all riled up.”

Defendant’s Mother Testifies In “American Sniper” Murder Trial

STEPHENVILLE (February 17, 2015) The prosecution rested and jurors heard defense testimony Tuesday afternoon from the mother of the Iraq war veteran charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of “American Sniper” Chris Kyle and Kyle’s friend Chad Littlefield in February 2013.

Eddie Ray Routh, 27 is accused of gunning down Kyle, 38, a former Navy SEAL, and Littlefield, 35, on Feb. 2, 2013 at a shooting range at the Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, to which the two men had taken Routh, whom Kyle was trying to help.

Jodi Routh, a former elementary school teacher who now works as a special education teacher, took the stand as the defense began to try convince jurors that Eddie Routh was insane at the time of the deadly shootings.

Jodi Routh taught at the same school the Kyles’ children attended and sent a note home one day asking Chris Kyle to call her son to try to help him.

But she testified Tuesday that she didn’t know that Kyle and her son would be going to a shooting range.

Routh Defense Presents 1st Full Day of ' Sniper' Trial Testimony (Video)

People close to Eddie Ray Routh took the witness stand in his defense Wednesday for the Feb. 2, 2013 killings of American Sniper Chris Kyle and friend Chad Littlefield. Routh’s former girlfriend testified that he proposed marriage to her the night before the murders and she said yes.

Jennifer Weed, 26, said their relationship that started in April 2012 was marked by many episodes of Routh’s troubling behavior with threats of suicide and paranoia about demons and the government.

Weed said she was upset with Routh for his drinking, marijuana and tobacco use and wanted him to stop. But she also described situations where she though he had not been using drugs or alcohol and his behavior was still extremely troubling. Routh was hospitalized for mental health care several times in the fall of 2012.

Weed described a situation in mid-January of 2013 when Routh was visibly shaking, sweating through his shirt and acting violently.

Accused killer Eddie Ray Routh seemed confused when he arrived at his sister's home a few hours after allegedly shooting Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield, Routh's sister said today.

"He was talking about pigs sucking his soul," Laura Blevins testified during the trial.

Routh's sister and her husband Gaines Blevins were two of the witnesses the defense called to testify this morning in the double murder case. Kyle was a former Navy SEAL and the focus of the book and the movie "American Sniper."

But the clear star of the defense case so far has been Jennifer Weed, Routh's ex-girlfriend. She has given the jury the most powerful testimony yet of Routh's history of mental illness.

They spent the night before the murders together, she said, during which time Routh told her the government was listening to him. Routh asked her to not say anything out loud and write down anything she had to say so "they" wouldn't hear it, she said.

And then, out of nowhere, Routh asked her to marry him, Weed testified. On the morning of the crime, they fought about his tobacco use and she left, she said.

Day six in the capital murder trial of Eddie Routh focused on the testimony of Jennifer Weed, Routh’s ex-girlfriend.
 
Weed testified Wednesday that Routh’s behavior became increasingly erratic as their relationship progressed in 2012. She knew Routh had been in the Marines and told her that he had killed in combat; although his job didn’t call for any combat.
 
“He made a joke that he had killed before and he’d do it again,” Weed said.

Weed answered several questions about Routh’s behavior throughout their relationship. She talked about an incident when she went to see Routh after receiving a phone call from James Watson, his uncle, who expressed concern about him.

“He was visibly upset, staring at the wall most of the time, then would break into tears and then laughter,” Weed said. “Then he would go back to staring.”

On Jan. 19, 2013, Weed said Routh forced her and her roommate to stay in their apartment because he believed the government was going to get them, and threatened them with a ninja sword. Routh was then sent back to a hospital.

Alleged killer Eddie Ray Routh had "paranoid personality disorder," which is not a mental disorder, and he knew what he was doing was wrong, a psychologist testified today at the "American Sniper" murder trial.

The past three days, the defense called family members, friends and a psychiatrist, who testified that Routh, who is accused of shooting and killing former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and Kyle's friend Chad Littlefield at a Texas gun range, had serious mental-health issues before the murders in February 2013.

Psychologist Randall Price, who was called by the prosecution today as a rebuttal witness, testified that Routh knew that what he was doing was wrong, ABC affiliate WFAA reported.

Price said that Routh had "paranoid personality disorder," which is not a mental disorder, according to WFAA.

The ex-Marine charged with shooting "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and another man was not legally insane, a prosecution expert said, suggesting the man may have gotten some of his ideas from the television show "Seinfeld."

Prosecutors called rebuttal witnesses Friday in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh, who is charged with killing Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield. Routh's attorneys, who are pursuing an insanity defense, rested their case Thursday.

Dr. Randall Price, a forensic psychologist, testified Friday that Routh had a paranoid disorder made worse by his use of alcohol and marijuana.

"In my opinion, he did know what he was doing was wrong, and he did it anyway," Price said.

A defense witness, Dr. Mitchell H. Dunn, testified Thursday that Routh had schizophrenia and showed signs of the illness for as long as two years before the February 2013 shootings. Dunn said Routh described seeing neighbors and friends as turning into pig-human hybrids.

Price argued Routh may have gotten the idea from "Seinfeld" or the TV show "Boss Hog."

Expert testifies ‘American Sniper’ killer faked paranoia, schizophrenia to avoid jail time

STEPHENVILLE — Eddie Ray Routh would say whatever it took to avoid going to jail, a medical expert testified Friday.

Routh, 27, is charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield. The men took him to Rough Creek Lodge and Resort hoping to help him with post-traumatic stress disorder. Experts have said they don’t believe Routh suffered from PTSD.

When Routh was arrested on Feb. 2, 2013, he told officers that he had been feeling “paranoid” and “schizophrenic” all day. In that moment, Routh revealed that he was trying to avoid going to jail by claiming he was crazy, said Dr. Michael Arambula, a forensic psychiatrist.

“He was showing his hand already. In other words, he was trying to get out of what he had done,” Arambula testified Friday.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — For those who served with Eddie Ray Routh in the Iraqi desert, the man on trial for gunning down the famed "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and a friend is not the Marine they had come to know.

Former Cpl. Ryker Pawloski says the man he knew looked up to people who did the kind of job Kyle did.

Routh is charged in the 2013 deaths of Kyle and Kyle's friend at a gun range. Routh's attorneys say he was in a psychotic state.

Family members say Routh, who was also deployed to Haiti, came back from his military service a changed man and was hospitalized multiple times for mental health issues.

STEPHENVILLE — Days before the capital murder trial of an ex-Marine accused of killing former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and another man, Robert Blevins got a feeling he needed to head to Texas.

The Oklahoma retiree had never watched a trial before, but something about this one was nagging at him.

“Something told me, ‘You need to go to this trial,’” Blevins said. “I came here to honor a hero. I just wanted to see what took this man’s life.”

Yes, the trial was cancelled yesterday due to the bad weather. It resumed today.

Closing arguments began Tuesday in the capital murder trial of Eddie Ray Routh, who killed the Navy SEAL, whose life was depicted in the movie “American Sniper,” and another man two years ago.

But tweets posted by journalists watching the trial on a closed-circuit television system at the Erath County District Court in Stephenville, provide a glimpse at the proceedings. STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Reuters) - The man charged with killing former U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle, the subject of the blockbuster movie "American Sniper," acted coldly and deliberately in carrying out his deadly ambush at a Texas gun range, a prosecutor said on Tuesday.

In closing arguments, prosecutor Jane Starnes told a jury in the rural Texas city of Stephenville that Eddie Ray Routh, 27, bided his time before fatally shooting Kyle and Kyle's friend Chad Littlefield at the range about 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Fort Worth in February 2013.

"The defendant did the murder. How much clearer can it be? This is not a whodunit case," she said. Prosecutors presented video and audio evidence where Routh admitted to the crime.

Defense lawyers have argued that Routh was a paranoid schizophrenic and should be declared innocent by reason of insanity. They have not refuted charges that Routh shot the two and fled the scene in Kyle's pickup truck.

STEPHENVILLE — The jury is deliberating in the capital murder trial of a Lancaster man accused of killing former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle and his best friend in February 2013.

Eddie Ray Routh, a former Marine corporal, confessed to killing Kyle and his friend, Chad Littlefield, but has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The men took Routh to an Erath County gun range to help him with post-traumatic stress disorder.

An expert hired by defense attorneys said that Routh, 27, suffers from schizophrenia and was in a psychotic state when he killed the men on Feb. 2, 2013, at the Rough Creek Lodge and Resort.

But experts hired by prosecutors said that Routh was faking mental illness when he was arrested for the crime. They said he suffered from cannabis-induced psychosis, which means Routh cannot be found legally insane.

'American Sniper' Trial: Verdict Reached in Double Murder Case

A Texas jury has reached a verdict at the trial of a former Marine accused of murdering famed Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and Kyle's friend Chad Littlefield.

The verdict, which has not yet been revealed, will be read this evening.

Eddie Ray Routh has been on trial for the February 2013 murders of Kyle and Littlefield at a Texas gun range.

The judge instructed the jury of 10 women and two men that they were to consider three possible decisions: guilty, not guilty, or not guilty by reason of insanity.

STEPHENVILLE, Texas -- A Texas jury has rejected the insanity defense of a former Marine in the deaths of famed "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and Kyle's friend Chad Littlefield.

Routh showed no reaction as a judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole, an automatic sentence since prosecutors didn't seek the death penalty in the capital murder case. As one of his victim's siblings called him an "American disgrace" shortly after, Routh looked back at the man intensely but didn't react otherwise.

"We're so thrilled that we have the verdict that we have tonight," Littlefield's mother, Judy Littlefield, said at a news conference outside the courthouse.

The Littlefield family had waited "two years for God to get justice for us," she said. "He was faithful."

Kyle's widow, Taya Kyle, had left the courtroom during the defense's closing statements earlier in the day and had not returned when the verdict was read.

During the trial, prosecutors asked her to testify about her life with Kyle. She was emotional when describing the last time she saw Chris alive, CBS News correspondent Manuel Bojorquez reports from Stephenville.
