CHARLESTON, S.C. — An intense manhunt was under way Thursday for a white gunman who opened fire on Wednesday night at a historic black church in this city’s downtown, killing nine people before fleeing.
The police chief, Greg Mullen, called the shooting a hate crime.
Chief Mullen said that law enforcement officials, including the F.B.I. and other federal agencies, were assisting in the investigation of a shooting that left six women and three men dead.
The police said the gunman walked into the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church around 9 p.m. and began shooting. Among the dead, according to reports, was the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who was also a state senator.
Eight people died at the scene, Chief Mullen said. One person taken to the Medical University of South Carolina, and died on the way.

Nine people were killed after a white man opened fire Wednesday night at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C., in what police described as a ‘hate crime,’ and police are still searching for the suspect.
At a 6 a.m. news conference Thursday, Charleston police chief Greg Mullen said the suspect is still at large. Police have “no reason” to believe the suspect isn’t in the Charleston area, Mr. Mullen said. He urged people to “be vigilant” and if they see anything suspicious to immediately contact authorities.
“This is an all hands on deck effort,” Mr. Mullen said. “This is a hate crime.”
The shooting took place at the Emanuel AME Church, led by Clementa Pinckney, a long-serving state senator. Mr. Pinckney was among those killed, police said.
A bomb threat complicated the investigation, contributing to chaos for several hours after the shooting and prompting police to ask nearby residents to evacuate.
Mr. Mullen said the suspect in the shooting was a white male in his early 20s. He said police thought they had tracked him with a police dog, but he got away.

Gunman on run after nine slain in US black church attack

Washington (AFP) - A white gunman was on the run Thursday after fatally shooting at least nine worshippers in a historic black church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina in what police called a hate crime.
Churchgoers had gathered for a prayer meeting in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday evening when the shooter walked in and opened fire, Charleston Police Chief Gregory Mullen said.
America's latest mass shooting comes at a time of heightened racial tensions in the country, after several high-profile killings of unarmed black men at the hands of white police in recent months led to riots and a national debate on race.
In Wednesday's attack, eight people were killed inside the church, and another victim later died at a trauma center. Several other people were wounded.
"At this point, we have nine victims in this hideous crime that has been committed," Mullen told journalists.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A white man opened fire during a prayer meeting inside a historic black church in downtown Charleston, killing nine people, including the pastor, in an assault authorities described as a hate crime.
The suspect attended the meeting at the church Wednesday night and stayed for nearly an hour before the deadly gunfire erupted, Police Chief Greg Mullen said.
The shooter remained at large Thursday morning and police released photographs from surveillance video of a suspect and a possible getaway vehicle. Mullen said he could not offer a make and model on the dark colored sedan because investigators were not certain about what is shown in the video.
The victims of the shooting were six females and three males, Mullen said Thursday morning. He did not give other details about the victims.

Mullen said he had no reason to think the suspect has left the Charleston area, but was distributing information about him and the vehicle around the country.
Mullen said the scene at the church was chaotic when police arrived, and the officers thought they had the suspect tracked with a police dog, but he got away.
"We will put all effort, we will put all resources and we will put all of our energy into finding this individual who committed this crime tonight," he said.

State House Minority leader Todd Rutherford told The Associated Press that the church's pastor, state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, was among those killed.
Pinckney 41, was a married father of two who was elected to the state house at age 23, making him the youngest member of the House at the time.
"He never had anything bad to say about anybody, even when I thought he should," Rutherford, D-Columbia, said. "He was always out doing work either for his parishioners or his constituents. He touched everybody."
In a statement, NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks condemned the shooting.

Charleston Shooting: A Closer Look at Alleged Gunman Dylann Roof
Jun 18, 2015, 3:41 PM ET
By EMILY SHAPIRO via GOOD MORNING AMERICA
ABC US News | World News
Dylann Roof, the alleged gunman authorities say is responsible for killing nine people in a predominantly black Charleston, South Carolina, church Wednesday night, had been “planning something like that for six months,” according to his roommate.
Dalton Tyler, who said he has known Roof for seven months to one year, said he saw the white, 21-year-old suspect just last week.
“He was big into segregation and other stuff,” Tyler said. “He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself.”
Tyler said he met Roof, a Lexington, South Carolina native, through a good friend. He also said Roof’s parents, with whom he said the suspect was “on and off,” had previously bought him a gun but never allowed him to take it with him until this past week.
Dylan Roof’s grandfather, Joe Roof, declined to comment to ABC News.

Charleston church shooting: Suspected gunman arrested (Video)
From the section US & Canada
A 21-year-old man suspected of killing nine people at a historic African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, has been arrested.
Excerpts:
At the scene: BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan
As the day progressed, the police cordon around the church was moved, allowing mourners and members of the media to get close to the historic church, which will now be remembered for the tragic events of Wednesday evening.
It's hard to imagine what happened inside. "Rev Clementa Pinckney, Pastor" reads the announcements board outside the church. He delivered sermons here, he worshipped here, and he died here.
Mr Roof was wearing stripes when he was transported from the police car to the aeroplane
Mr Roof could be seen boarding the plane while wearing leg shackles
The study group is said to have believed the gunman wanted to join them in studying the Bible. He stayed nearly an hour before becoming aggressive and violent, Charleston's county coroner said.
Eight people died at the scene and one person died later in hospital. There were three survivors.
Along with Rev Pinckney, a 41-year-old father of two, the other victims have been named as Cynthia Hurd, 54; Tywanza Sanders, 26; Sharonda Singleton, 45; Myra Thompson, 59; Ethel Lance, 70; Susie Jackson, 87; the Rev Daniel Simmons Sr, 74; and DePayne Doctor.

Dylann Roof, Charleston Suspect, Wore Symbols of White Supremacy
By JASON HOROWITZ, SHAILA DEWAN and RICHARD A. OPPEL Jr. JUNE 18, 2015
Dylann Storm Roof wearing a jacket with the flags of apartheid-era South Africa, top, and Rhodesia, as modern-day Zimbabwe was called during a period of white rule.
CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Facebook profile picture chosen by Dylann Storm Roof in May is thick with symbolism. It shows Mr. Roof, a scowling young white man, against a distinctly Southern backdrop: a swamp dripping with Spanish moss. His black jacket is adorned with two flags — one from apartheid-era South Africa, the other from white-ruled Rhodesia — that have been adopted as emblems by modern-day white supremacists.
Law enforcement officials identified Mr. Roof, 21, as the suspect in the mass shooting at an African-American church in Charleston on Wednesday night that left nine dead, including the pastor, Clementa C. Pinckney. Mr. Roof was arrested Thursday in North Carolina.
A cousin of Mr. Pinckney who had spoken to a witness, Sylvia Johnson, told NBC that the gunman entered the church, asked for the pastor and sat next to him during Bible study before opening fire. “I have to do it,” he said, according to Ms. Johnson. “You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.” The shooting was being investigated as a hate crime.

June 18 (Reuters) - The victims of Wednesday's mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, were bonded in life by their faith and their close links to the historic African-American church where they worshipped, studied the Bible, and were killed.
The six women and three men fatally shot at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church included a high school track and field coach, a studious Dallas Cowboys fan, a dedicated librarian and a state senator and preacher whose voice commanded respect.
They opened up their Bible study class to a young white man who police later named as the suspect in their murders. Dylann Roof, 21, was arrested in Shelby, North Carolina, about 220 miles (350 km) away, on Thursday.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old white man accused of shooting dead nine people in a rampage at a historic black South Carolina church, has confessed to carrying out the attack, CNN reported on Friday, citing unnamed law enforcement officials.
Roof had intended to set off new racial confrontations with his attack, CNN reported, citing a law enforcement source. The report could not be immediately confirmed.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley told NBC's "Today" show on Friday that she would prefer to see Roof tried on state charges and that she believed state prosecutors should pursue a death sentence.

Charleston Shooting: How a Good Samaritan's 911 Call Led to Dylann Roof's Arrest
Jun 18, 2015, 4:43 PM ET
By EMILY SHAPIRO via GOOD MORNING AMERICA
ABC US News | World News
A North Carolina woman's 911 call this morning brought an end to a desperate manhunt for Dylann Roof, the alleged gunman authorities say is responsible for killing nine people in a Charleston, South Carolina, church Wednesday night.
Early this morning, police released pictures from surveillance footage showing Roof, 21, as well as the car he was driving.
Debbie Dills, a bookkeeper who works at a florist shop in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, was leaving church in her car when she looked over and saw a driver next to her with a bowl haircut, she told ABC News.
Dills said she then thought there was something about the car that she had heard about somewhere, but couldn't place it. She then spotted the white tag that was in the police description of the shooting suspect.
The observant good Samaritan called her husband and then 911.

Dylann Roof was obsessed with Trayvon Martin, wanted to save the ‘white race’: friend

Shooting suspect Dylann Roof in custody Thursday. An old friend says Roof was obsessed with Trayvon Martin and drunkenly rambled about racial segregation.
Alleged Charleston church shooter Dylann Storm Roof was obsessed with the death of Trayvon Martin and rescuing the “white race,” according to an old friend who reconnected with Roof weeks before the massacre that left nine people dead.
“He said blacks were taking over the world. Someone needed to do something about it for the white race,” Joseph Meek Jr., of Lexington, S.C., told the Associated Press.
Meek said he was best friends with Roof when they were in middle school, but they lost touch until just a few weeks ago, when Roof reached out to him on Facebook.
Roof, who was never much interested in racial issues, suddenly seemed obsessed with them, Meek said.

Officials: Suspect in church slayings unrepentant amid outcry over racial hatred

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The gunman charged with killing nine people in an African American church was unrepentant during a confession to police, even after almost backing out of what he called his “mission” because church members were so nice to him, according to law enforcement officials and others briefed on the investigation.
Dylann Roof not only confessed to causing the Wednesday night carnage in Charleston, but said he wanted his actions known, said the law enforcement officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is unfolding. They said Roof espoused strong anti-black views when questioned by officers.
But the 21-year-old also told police he had briefly reconsidered his plan during the time he spent quietly watching a Bible study group before opening fire, two people briefed on the investigation said. Roof “said he “almost didn’t go through with it because they were so nice to him” one of the people said, before concluding: “I had to complete my mission.”

UPDATED 9:11 PM EDT Jun 19, 2015
(CNN) —Dylann Roof heard words of forgiveness from families of some of the nine people he's accused of killing.
His response: A blank expression.
~Snipped~
Roof's family spoke out for the first time Friday, extending its "deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims," according to a statement issued by his public defender.
"Words cannot express our shock, grief and disbelief as to what happened that night. We are devastated and saddened by what occurred. We offer our prayers sympathy for all of those impacted by these events," the statement says. It ends asking for privacy for the Roof family.
Roof barely spoke at the hearing, answering the judge's questions about his unemployment with a "yes, sir" and "no, sir" and stating his age as 21. The video feed meant Roof could hear, but not see, people in the courtroom, according to court employees. People in the courtroom could see and hear Roof.
Magistrate James B. Gosnell Jr. drew fire on social media by opening the hearing by expressing sympathy for Roof's family.

Charleston shooting: Judge Gosnell presiding over Dylann Roof's case previously reprimanded over racist language
Nine people died in a historically black church in South Carolina
By Rose Troup Buchanan
Saturday 20 June 2015
A US judge has claimed that the family of the man charged with shooting nine black churchgoers last week are also “victims” – as it emerged he had previously received a public reprimand over the use of racist language in court.
The suspected shooter, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, appeared in Charleston County Magistrate James Gosnell Jr.’s court yesterday and was charged with nine counts of murder.
Roof is accused of killing nine members of the historically black North Carolina church’s congregation on Wednesday night. The case has sparked intentional interest and thrown a light – yet again – on America’s complex racial tensions.
Judge Gosnell told the court yesterday: “We have victims - nine of them. But we also have victims on the other side. There are victims on this young man's side of the family.”

Charleston gunman left racist manifesto on web site, authorities say
The Washington Post

A photo from a white supremacist website showing Dylann Storm Roof, the suspect in the Charleston, S.C., church shooting.
Authorities said Saturday that the man accused of killing nine African Americans in a venerable Charleston, S.C. church left a racist manifesto targeting blacks, Jews and Hispanics on his web site, a denunciation that appears to offer a rationale for the shootings.
The broadside, loaded with offensive racial characterizations of blacks and others, includes the declaration that “someone has to have the bravery to take it to the real world, and I guess that has to be me.”
“I have no choice,” reads part of that final section, titled An Explanation. “I am not in the position to, alone, go into the ghetto and fight. I chose Charleston because it is [the] most historic city in my state, and at one time had the highest ratio of blacks to Whites in the country.”
Law enforcement authorities said the site belonged to Dylann Roof, the 21-year-old man accused of gunning down nine people at a bible study in Charleston’s historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church Wednesday night, and reflected his views. The site also hosted 60 photos, most of which showed Roof.

Charleston Mayor Rallies City After Fatal Shootings
Joseph Riley, who has been in office since 1975, has mostly drawn praise for his response, but there are a few detractors

The deadly shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church has trained a spotlight on longtime Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley, a soft-spoken liberal Democrat who has been in office since 1975.
The 72-year-old mayor has cut a prominent figure in the crisis, rushing to the side of the families of the nine victims in the hours after the Wednesday night shooting, reiterating his call to remove the Confederate flag from outside the state capitol and saying he doesn’t favor the death penalty.
Others, including Republican Gov. Nikki Haley, have voiced support for considering capitol punishment for alleged shooter Dylann Roof, of Eastover, S.C.

Re: Nine People Killed in Charleston Church Shooting; Massacre Suspect Dylann Storm Roof Arrested
My heart goes out to the victim's families for this incident. I am deeply disheartened that a church is no longer a safe haven.
I just want to post the following...felt it needed to be said.
Obama came out after all of these "mass shootings" condemning the 80+ million gun owners in the U.S.. IIRC, obama did not come out after either Ft. Hood shooting condemning the act or anything else...
Most gun owners have not shot another individual, and most police officers have not drawn their gun either. A police officer, as far as i am told, is allowed to draw his/her gun only, repeat, ONLY if the officer needs to [b]KILL/PUT AN END TO AN IMMINENT[b] threat. They do not fire warning shots, or "shoot the gun out of a suspects hand."
After watching the above, i felt this article exonerates the gun owners of America. Gun Control does not work.

Re: Nine People Killed in Charleston Church Shooting; Massacre Suspect Dylann Storm Roof Arrested
Here is a direct link to Roof's four page manifesto, and a short quote. CNN has not verified that it is him; however, other media outlets are at least verifying it as being from a person with the same name. Many of the pictures that are being posted of the alleged shooter are from the same blog.
Quote: Segregation was not a bad thing. It was a defensive measure. Segregation did not exist to hold back n******. It existed to protect us from them. And I mean that in multiple ways. Not only did it protect us from having to interact with them, and from being physically harmed by them, but it protected us from being brought down to their level. Integration has done nothing but bring Whites down to level of brute animals. The best example of this is obviously our school system. End of Quote

Here is the link for the article in "Mother Jones," where the hate filled manifesto is inset at the bottom:
By Mother Jones | Here’s What Appears to Be Dylann Roof's Racist Manifesto
"The event that truly awakened me was the Trayvon Martin case," the suspected gunman wrote.

May the death penalty follow.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the survivors, relatives, and friends of the victims.

Charleston shootings’ emotional burden looms over Sunday sermons
Pastor Dimas Salaberrios of the Infinity Bible Church in New York led prayers on Saturday outside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Church where nine people were shot to death earlier this week.
By Phillip Lucas | Associated Press | June 21, 2015
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Members of a historic black church will return to their sanctuary Sunday and worship, perhaps united like never before, and similar sermons of recovery and healing will reverberate throughout the country.
Sunday morning will mark the first worship service at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church since Dylann Roof, 21, sat among a Bible study group and opened fire after saying that he targeted them because they were black, authorities said. Among the nine killed was the church pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who was also a state senator.
Events to show solidarity are planned throughout the city and beyond, including the synchronized ringing of church bells at 10 a.m. EDT. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and her family were to attend the service at Emanuel.
Despite grim circumstances the congregation has been faced with, the welcoming spirit Roof exploited before the shooting is still alive, church members said.
