Family, friends were worried about Texas church murder victim
MIDLOTHIAN, Texas --Those who were close to Terri "Missy" Bevers, a fitness instructor murdered Monday at a Texas church, say they had grown worried about her in the weeks leading up to her death.
Bevers' body was found early Monday morning inside Creekside Church, in Midlothian, Texas, where she was getting ready to lead a 5 a.m. fitness class. A person seen on surveillance camera wearing what appears to be police body armor broke into the church before she arrived, according to police.
Bevers' mother-in-law, Marsha Tucker, said the victim's husband had worried about her pre-dawn classes.
"Her husband had told her to be prepared. You know he had worried about something like that, that early in the morning," said Tucker.
Mark Garcia, who worked out with Bevers regularly at a nearby gym, said that in recent weeks, the 45-year-old didn't seem like herself.

New Clues Emerge in Case of Mother Found Murdered in Texas Church (Video)
By AVIANNE TAN · May 5, 2016, 7:12 PM ET
New clues are emerging in the case of a mother found murdered in a church in Texas last month, according to search warrants released by the Midlothian Police Department today citing "persons of interest" in the case.
Terri "Missy" Bevers, a fitness instructor and mother of three, was found murdered at Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian, Texas, on April 18. She had been scheduled to teach a fitness boot camp class at the church, according to police.
Surveillance video from the church showed an unidentified suspect wearing full tactical gear -- including a heavy helmet, gloves and jacket with the word "POLICE" on the front and back -- disguising the person's gender and identity. The suspect had a distinctive walk, which police were hoping someone might be able to identify.
~Snipped~
Bevers Received a 'Strange and Creepy' Message Days Before Her Death
A friend of Bevers told investigators that "less than three days before the murder," Bevers received a "creepy and strange" message on LinkedIn from a male unknown to them both, according to the search warrant for Bevers' LinkedIn records.
The friend could not recall the name of the person on the account that sent the message, police said.
Bevers Had an 'Ongoing Financial and Marital Struggle' And Extramarital Affairs
Evidence police extracted from Bevers' and her husband's iPhones and an iPad, along with several tips provided to officers, revealed that Bevers had "an ongoing financial and marital struggle as well as intimate/personal relationship(s) external to the marriage" with persons of interest, according to the search warrant for AT&T cellphone records.
A 'Person of Interest' Had 'Fliratious' Communications With Bevers on LinkedIn
Police said that a "person of interest confirmed that they had engaged in a series of communications" with Bevers while on LinkedIn some time around January this year, until her death. The "person of interest" added that their communications ultimately turned "flirtatious and familiar," police added in the search warrant for LinkedIn records.
How the Unknown Murder Suspect May Have Used a Cell Phone
According to the search warrant for AT&T records, police said they believe the unknown suspect could have used the cell phone to:
- confirm the Bevers' workout times and locations, which she had publicly posted to social media
- communicate with Bevers through calls, messages, texts, emails, data, push-to-talk and/or walky-talky
- photograph, record and/or video the victim and the murderous act
- access applications and tools such as map locator applications, clock or timing capabilities, GPS locating applications and flashlight
No official suspects have yet been named.

A woman who was found murdered last month in a Texas church received a "creepy and strange" message days before her death, according to a search warrant.
Terri "Missy" Bevers, 45, was found dead early on the morning of April 18 at the Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian. She had gone there to prepare to lead an exercise class and her body was found by several of her students. Authorities said Bevers had suffered multiple puncture wounds to her head and chest.

According to an affidavit, Bevers had shown a friend a message that had been sent to her on LinkedIn, a business networking social media site. The document said that neither Bevers nor her friend knew the man who sent the message and both agreed that it was "creepy and strange."
Police said Bevers' friend did not remember the name on the account that sent the message.
The affidavit also reveals that Bevers and her husband Brandon had been struggling with marital and financial problems. Police said Bevers had been receiving "flirtatious and familiar" LinkedIn messages from another man since January.

The father-in-law of Terri “Missy” Bevers, the fitness instructor who was killed at a Midlothian church last week, brought to a dry cleaner a shirt that was “stained with blood,” a search-warrant affidavit says.
KTVT-TV (Channel 11) reports that Randy Bevers told employees at Dry Clean Super Center in Midlothian that the stains were animal blood, the affidavit says.
According to the affidavit, the employee told police that it looked like someone had already tried to clean the size-XXL women’s long-sleeve shirt.
Kristi Stout, Missy Bevers’ sister-in-law, told KXAS-TV (NBC5) that Randy Bevers had to break up a fight between two dogs at her home, which led to blood getting on his clothing.

Mystery: Terri 'Missy' Bevers (pictured) was found dead in a Texas church last month
The mother-in-law of the fitness instructor found in a church last month has written an open letter to her killer.
Terry 'Missy' Bevers was found dead with puncture wounds to her head and chest at the Creekside Church of Christ in Midlothian, Texas, in April as she set up an exercise class.
Surveillance footage capture a suspect carrying tools consistent with Bevers' injuries walking through the church, but no arrests have been made in the case.
On Saturday, Marsha Essary Tucker, mother of Bevers' widower Brandon, took to Facebook imploring the attacker to turn themselves in.
'Are you getting a bit nervous, shaking in your "boots that look too big?" You should be! It's just a matter of time now,' Tucker writes.
'Things would be a lot easier on you to just go ahead and turn yourself in. I'm sure the officials will take that into account.
'Go ahead and clear your conscience, you will feel better.
'No sense in having your family witness you being picked up by the police and leaving that lasting vision on their minds forever! We are all waiting! It's one way or the other!!'

Mother-in-Law of Slain Texas Fitness Instructor Writes Letter to Unidentified Suspect: 'Clear Your Conscience, You Will Feel Better'
Terri Bevers
By Greg Hanlon @GregHanlon 05/09/2016 AT 12:20 PM EDT
The mother-in-law of Terri "Missy" Bevers, the 45-year-old Texas fitness instructor found dead in a church last month the morning she was to teach a fitness class, posted a public letter on Facebook Saturday to her killer, who is still unidentified and at large.
Tucker's letter is the second such letter she has written to the suspect. It begins: "It has been 2 weeks since I wrote the 1st letter to you. Almost 3 weeks since you murdered Missy."
It continues: "I would guarantee your life has been more miserable than ours! Our life has been filled with peace that you wouldn't understand. Something only a God-fearing, saved by Jesus, person truly understands! We have been blessed by so many wonderful people, willing to share our grief, by praying with us, preparing meals for her family and just blessing us with all of their actions in so many ways!"
A search warrant released last week led investigators to believe that Bevers and her husband, Brandon Bevers, had been having marital and financial problems. The search warrant also revealed that Bevers had received LinkedIn messages from a man she didn't know that made her uncomfortable. Brandon Bevers had previously described his wife to reporters as "a great woman, a great wife, a great mother, and a great friend."

NYPD assisting in Texas church murder investigation
MIDLOTHIAN, Texas - The New York Police Department is working closely with police in Midlothian, Texas, as they investigate the brutal murder last month of a mother in a church, sources tell CBS DFW.
The NYPD experts were called in to help analyze "pings" from cell towers in the hopes of tracking down an "electronic footprint" of the person who killed Terri "Missy" Bevers the morning of April 18. The sources said investigators are hoping the killer, who was dressed in what appeared to be police gear, had an active phone that sent signals to nearby cell towers as he or she confronted Bevers inside the Creekside Church.
Police have indicated the mother of three was attacked with a hammer.
Warrants released Thursday revealed that police obtained cell phone information for several members of Bevers' family and others who were close to her. Those documents also indicate that Bevers received a "creepy" LinkedIn message in the days before her death, and that several phone messages uncovered by investigators confirm tips of financial trouble, struggles within Bevers' marriage and extramarital affairs.

Brandon Bevers, the husband of the Texas fitness trainer found dead before her class on April 18, tells PEOPLE he knows things about the investigation that the public doesn't and that he's pleased with the direction of the investigation.
"I'm privy to some things that nobody is aware of, and I'm impressed with them," he tells PEOPLE. "I really can't talk about anything in terms of the investigation because it's ongoing. But I have quite a bit of faith in what they're doing."
Midlothian Assistant Police Chief Kevin Johnson tells PEOPLE that he can't comment on specifics of the investigation, including whether an arrest is imminent or not, but they "continue to work through leads."

Fitness instructor’s family shocked she sent ‘flirtatious’ messages before she was killed
Marc Ramirez
Published: May 10, 2016 9:58 pm
The mother-in-law of the fitness instructor who was killed at a Milothian church last month says that revelations about her daughter-in-law exchanging “flirtatious and familiar” messages with someone other than her husband “knocked us down a little bit.”
Marsha Tucker made the comments in an interview published Tuesday by People, which also interviewed Terri “Missy” Bevers’ husband Brandon, Tucker’s son.
“I mean, as bad as it is on the girls, especially the older ones, for Brandon to lose his wife to murder and then find out about the flirtatious remarks to other people has got to be devastating to him,” she told the magazine, saying she didn’t know of any issues, marital or otherwise, on the couple’s part. “I mean, enough’s enough here.”
In a search warrant released May 5, police said they have reason to believe Bevers and her husband were having “an ongoing financial and marital struggle as well as intimate/personal relationship(s) external to the marriage.” They say they’ve recovered messages on Missy’s devices that are “flirtatious” and “intimate.”
~Snipped~
Police have not named a suspect or motive in Bevers’ death. They are working to identify a person in SWAT-type tactical gear seen in surveillance video walking through the church and swinging what looks like a hammer.

Midlothian PD discredit arrest rumors in Missy Bevers case

Midlothian police discredited rumors of reports that authorities had made an arrest in the Missy Bevers murder investigation.
Rumors began Wednesday night when the Nancy Grace Show reported an arrest could be imminent. The HLN show set social media abuzz.
Missy’s husband, Brandon, also heard the rumors and wanted answers.
Midlothian police confirmed on Thursday no arrested had been made. However, they said they will soon have more resources to help find the killer.
Police say a team from Tarrant County will soon assist them with a video reconstruction -- similar to a crash reconstruction. It should allow them to get a more accurate suspect description when it comes to body size and height.

Almost a month after somebody murdered a fitness instructor inside a church in Texas, police on Friday signaled progress in the case, saying investigators were able to reconstruct video evidence from the crime scene.
That evidence could help the Tarrant County District Attorney’s office give a more detailed physical description of the killer, KLRD reported. Police did not give any other details.

Police search for "vehicle of interest" in Texas church murder
MIDLOTHIAN, Texas -- Police investigating the murder of a Texas woman inside a church on April 18 are looking for a vehicle seen at a nearby business before the murder, they announced Friday.
The 2010-2012 silver or light color Nissan Altima with an oval sticker on its bumper was captured on surveillance video with its lights on in the early morning before Terri "Missy" Bevers was found dead in the Creekside Church in Midlothian, Texas.
A vehicle police say was seen on a surveillance camera near the Midlothian, Texas, church where Terri "Missy" Bevers was found murdered on April 18, 2016.
/ Midlothian Police Department
Assistant Chief Kevin Johnson said at a press conference Friday that the owner of the vehicle is not necessarily a suspect, but police want to know if the person saw anything that could help the investigation, reports CBS DFW.
"The last remaining lead involves a car that pulls into the SWFA Sporting Goods parking lot at approximately 2 a.m. They're seen pulling into the parking lot and leaving just a few minutes later," Johnson said.
~Snipped~
Police previously obtained warrants for cell phone information related to several members of the Bevers' family, but Johnson said Friday that none of the victim's family, friends or co-workers are considered suspects.
Johnson said that through forensic video reconstruction police have determined the suspect stands somewhere between 5'2" and 5'7" and appears to have a light skin tone.
Rewards of $20,000 are currently being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in the case.

PD Still Searching For Suspect In Murder Of Fitness Instructor Missy Bevers
UPDATED | May 20, 2016 11:02 AM
May 20, 2016 10:48 AM
MIDLOTHIAN (CBSDFW.COM) – Officials with the Midlothian Police Department say they are still diligently investigating the murder of fitness instructor Missy Bevers, but so far they still have no suspect/suspects in the case.
During a media event on Friday, Midlothian Assistant Chief Kevin Johnson said, “Despite the tips we’ve already received we continue to rely on the public’s help.”
Terri “Missy” Bevers, 45, was found dead inside the Creekside Church in Midlothian on the morning of April 18. Bevers was scheduled to hold a bootcamp at the church that morning. Her body was discovered by one of the fitness class participants. It was later determined that she died from a head wound.
Assistant Chief Johnson did say that none of Bevers family; friends or co-workers are considered suspects in the murder.
As it stands, investigators say all of the leads, generated from residential and commercial cameras, have been exhausted — except one. Police say they’d like to speak to the owner/driver of a vehicle caught on camera.

It’s been a month since Terri “Missy” Bevers was found dead at a Midlothian church, and police are running out of solid leads.
Investigators had promised to recap their work so far and release new information today in the case of the fitness instructor and mother of three who was slain April 18 at Creekside Church of Christ.
But they had little to report at Friday’s briefing.
Assistant Chief Kevin Johnson reassured the public that investigators are still hopeful they’ll get a break in the case.

More than a month has passed since Missy Bevers was found bludgeoned to death inside a Midlothian church with some kind of tool the killer used to break-in. The killer, seen on surveillance video, was dressed in what looks like police tactical gear.
It’s a crime that has drawn national attention.
"In a strange way, I'm thankful for the attention that this has received,” admitted Brandon Bevers, Missy’s husband. “But it goes back to that it happened in a house of God, and that's pretty disturbing."

"I still think whoever this person was knew my wife and had a motive," Bevers tells PEOPLE. "There's no doubt about it."

A surveillance video of the church released by officials shows an unidentified suspect dressed in tactical gear, carrying a hammer. Missy died from multiple puncture wounds to the head and chest, according to an arrest warrant. Authorities still haven't confirmed if the suspect is male or female.
But Brandon thinks he knows.
"I think it was a woman," he said. "That's just an opinion."
Brandon, who is raising their three daughters, says he has good days and bad days when he thinks about the crime that remains unsolved. There are so many unanswered questions.
"There's no reason why an individual would break into a church, dressed in that type of clothing and stage a robbery, or what would appear to be a robbery – going through the building, breaking glass and opening doors," he says. "If that person was really there to commit a robbery, why did they kill my wife and leave her wedding ring on her finger?"

Mother-in-Law of Murdered Texas Fitness Instructor Shares Love Story Between Her Son and Daughter-in-Law: 'She Was Definitely the One'
By Jeff Truesdell @jhtruesdell 05/25/2016 AT 03:00 PM EDT
Marsha Tucker knew she'd found a girl that her son would like.
"She was just a very down-to-earth country girl," she recalls of Terri "Missy" Bevers, the victim in a still-unsolved mystery: Police in Midlothian, Texas, continue to search for the person who entered a church early on the morning of April 18 and killed Bevers, 35, a married mom of three girls, as she readied to teach a predawn fitness class.
When they met in 1997, Tucker and Missy were co-workers at a Bealls department store. "I liked her," says Tucker. "I thought about my oldest son: 'I think he'd like her.'"
So Tucker decided to play Cupid. Phone numbers were exchanged, and Missy began chatting with Tucker's son, Brandon, 42, who works with his family-run fuel distribution business. They arranged a first date for lunch during one of Missy's work breaks.

Latest tips in midlothian fitness instructor's slaying all lead to dead ends
By Marc Ramirez
Published June 3, 2016 6:35 pm
Detectives say they are stymied in their investigation into the murder of a fitness instructor in Midlothian, with new incoming information now slowing to a crawl.
“This week did not yield any significant updates,” said Assistant Police Chief Kevin Johnson. “Tips have slowed to a few each day.”
~Snipped~
Among the tips related to police have been a Dallas man who vandalized a church, a serial church burglar from Arlington and a man who accosted an elderly woman at a Louisiana Walmart while clothed in old-fashioned body armor.
~Snipped~
Police believe Bevers had been in contact with her killer, who according to a search-warrant affidavit may have used a cellphone to record the slaying. Members of the New York Police Department are aiding the investigation in hopes that sophisticated tracking devices can identify any electronic “footprints” been left behind by the killer.
~Snipped~
Johnson said every actionable tip is taken seriously and hopes that with continued vigilance that “we will eventually get the lead that leads us to this killer.”
