Burial Delayed For ‘Baby Doe’ Bella Bond

BOSTON (CBS) – The burial plot has been picked, but Bella Bond won’t be laid to rest just yet.

New information in the murder investigation of the girl previously known only as “Baby Doe” has the medical examiner putting a hold on her body.

...A spokesperson for the district attorney says it’s because the cause of death is still in question.

IIRC, earlier news accounts said both defendants were pointing the finger at each other/blaming each other. It would seem that the examiners are trying to pinpoint "who is telling the truth" through further testing and analysis since it says "for the prosecutors to build their case".

IMO, they are both equally responsible and should pay accordingly.

Judge grants second autopsy of Bella Bond

(CNN)A Massachusetts judge Tuesday granted a defense motion asking that it be allowed to conduct a second autopsy on 2-year-old Bella Bond before the girl's mother and her boyfriend appear at a probable cause hearing next month.

Judge Lisa Grant also approved the prosecution's request that Rachelle Bond continue to be held on $1 million bail in what became known as the "Baby Doe" case, while her boyfriend, Michael McCarthy, remains ineligible for bail. The probable cause hearing is scheduled for November 19.

Report: DCF oversight of Bond family lacking

BOSTON — The Department of Children and Families ended its involvement with Bella Bond, the toddler whose dead body was found in a trash bag on Deer Island in June, too quickly and should have conducted more thorough reviews of her welfare, the Office of the Child Advocate reported yesterday.
 
In 2012 and 2013, DCF opened cases related to neglect, provided services to the child’s mother, Rachelle Bond, and then closed the cases after 45-day assessment periods. But Maria Mossaides, the state child advocate, said yesterday that the fact that DCF had previously removed two children from Rachelle Bond’s custody should have prompted a higher level of response in 2012 and 2013.

Additionally, Rachelle Bond was struggling with the same issues that led to her losing custody of two other children, the child advocate’s report said, and DCF did not fully assess her ability to care for Bella despite being aware that she had twice lost parental rights.

“It is clear that the Department of Children and Families should have not closed the case in 2013,” Mossaides said. “The decision to close was based on insufficient, then-current information.”

Hearing postponed in Bella Bond case

Suffolk County prosecutors say the hearing has been rescheduled of the man and woman charged in connection with the death of Bella Bond.

Michael Patrick McCarthy, 35, of Quincy and Rachelle Dee Bond, 40, of Dorchester were supposed to appear for a hearing Thursday. The hearing has now been rescheduled to Dec. 22, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said in a statement.

"....The mother of a 2-year-old girl known as 'Baby Doe' received $1,400 in public assistance for her daughter months after the toddler was murdered and her body washed up on a Boston Harbor island inside a bag, prosecutors said in court today.

Rachelle Bond, 40, pleaded not guilty to an accessory charge at her arraignment Wednesday. She is accused of helping her boyfriend conceal the body of her daughter, Bella.

Michael McCarthy, 35, was charged with first-degree murder and will be arraigned next Monday...."

A Suffolk Superior Court judge has set a trial date for the Dorchester woman accused of helping her boyfriend dump her toddler’s body after he allegedly killed her.

Rachelle Bond will stand trial Dec. 1 on charges of being an accessory after the fact to the murder of 2-year-old Bella Bond and collecting $1,400 in welfare benefits after the child’s death.

...Bond pleaded not guilty Jan. 6 and is being held on $1 million cash bail. McCarthy, who pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and was ordered held without bail, maintains that he thought Bella was in the custody of the Department of Children and Families during the months after she disappeared.

Prosecutors in the case against the Dorchester woman accused of helping her boyfriend dump her toddler’s body in the water off South Boston after he allegedly killed her have given the woman’s attorney a trove of materials they may use at her Dec. 1 trial, including two underwater photographs and a photograph of a weight.

Rachelle Bond and Michael P. McCarthy are accused of using weights identical to ones found at the Quincy plumbing business McCarthy’s father owns when they allegedly dumped 2-year-old Bella Bond’s body in the water.

After her June 25, the girl's mother says he told her: 'She just died. It was her time. She was a demon,' CNN reported from the trial.

Rachelle Bond helped him dispose of her daughter's body. She pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact in February.

She claims she was so afraid of the man that she went along with what he was saying and that her drug addiction also stopped her from speaking out.

McArthy denies killing the toddler, claiming it was all her mother.

His lawyers told a court on Tuesday: 'He had nothing to do with her tragic death. Michael did not even know that Bella was dead until the police who arrested him told him.

'The prosecution's case rests entirely upon the uncorroborated and unbelievable testimony from Rachelle Bond.'

They flipped the prosecutors' claims, insisting that it was in fact Bond who was obsessed with evil and satanism.

McArthy's lawyers cited a diary she kept to support their argument, telling how she'd used it to document her outlandish beliefs that world leaders rape and kill 'babies' and 'drink their blood'. ..."
