American Nanny Lauren Mann Died of 'Suffocation': Vienna Autopsy

MAINZ, Germany - An American nanny whose half-naked body was found in her Vienna apartment died of "suffocation," police in Austria said Thursday.

Lauren Mann, 25, was found at her home in the city Tuesday night.



Police are still treating the case as homicide "because third party involvement cannot be excluded," a spokesman told NBC News.

A large amount of blood was found at the scene though an initial autopsy failed to determine cause of death.

A final autopsy showed that she died of "suffocation," police said Thursday, adding that the case has been handed to the Vienna prosecutor's office.

A spokesperson for the prosecutor's office would only say that the "investigation is ongoing and we will need to wait for results."

American authorities are assisting in the investigation, according to the U.S. State Department.

Police have concluded that a Colorado woman who was found dead in Vienna this week had died from suffocation.

Lauren Mann, 25, had been living in the Austrian capital and was working as an au pair, or nanny, for a local family. She was found dead in a pool of blood on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in her apartment, according to Vienna police. Her body was half-undressed, according to Thomas Keiblinger, a Vienna police spokesperson.

Today, the city's prosecutor Nina Bussek told ABC News that Mann had suffocated. Investigators have not yet determined if someone else was involved in her death.

An American nanny has been found 'murdered' in her apartment in Vienna, local police have confirmed.

Lauren Mann was discovered lying half-naked, face-down on a mattress at her fourth district address on Tuesday.

Authorities say the 25-year-old's body was found surrounded by a 'considerable amount of blood' as police confirmed they are treating her death as a homicide.

She had a pullover across her face and her arms were stretched along her body, local reports said.

A Gambian man who had lost his right to stay in Austria had been living with her in the apartment but has not been traced.

He is one of the focuses of the police inquiry, a source told one local newspaper. The nature of their relationship was not explained.

Mann, a nanny from Paonia, Colorado, had been studying and working in Vienna for around three years.

According to The Local, the young woman's employer became alarmed when she failed to arrive for work on Monday.

He called police who, with the help of firemen, broke open the door to her studio apartment on the Wiedner Hauptstrasse on Tuesday evening.

They found her body inside in complete darkness. All of the light bulbs in her apartment had burned out.

VIENNA - Austrian police say the body of a 25-year-old woman from Colorado has been found in her Vienna apartment and her death is being investigated as a homicide.

A State Department official identified her as Lauren Mann from the town of Paonia in Western Colorado.

Mann's family issued a statement on Facebook Wednesday:

"We are heartbroken to tell you our daughter and sister Lauren Mann has been found dead in her apartment in Vienna, Austria. An investigation is in progress. It has been released in Austria to the media and is being sensationalized. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers."

A friend posted condolences on Facebook, "I'm so saddened by this. Lauren was a pianist friend of mine at CU. She was such a talent and kind woman. Thoughts and love to her family and friends."

Mann attended the University of Colorado at Boulder College of Music, where she studied piano and played in several recitals, according to the university website. She was also a member of Club français @ CU Boulder, where people learn French.

Her Facebook page says she studied German at Campus der Universität in Vienna. On her Facebook page, she posted her artistic photography, including images of European street scenes, a street market, sculptures, churches and curving interior stairwells.

An illegal immigrant has been arrested over the murder of an American nanny who had given him shelter at her Vienna apartment.

The 24-year-old Gambian had been wanted by police since the death of Lauren Mann, 25, from Grand Junction, Colorado last month.

He was arrested on Thursday in Bern, Switzerland, at an asylum center there after his mobile phone use was traced.

The location of the arrest suggests he was trying to use the immigration system to avoid being returned to his home country.

He was named by prosecutors in Austria only as Abdou I., under a legal convention that the surnames of alleged criminals are not released until they are convicted.

No mugshot was released by authorities in either country.

Austrian newspaper Krone also reported that he was already known to police, having raped an underage girl in Germany.
